Since we now have the t999l, how is the battery compared to the hspa version? And say I don't get LTE in certain places, can I still get hspa? Want to try and see if I can swap out. When I switched to T-Mobile the Rep said this would get LTE even though I thought he was full of ****. So want to see if I can swap them for free

I was using the at&t s3 with LTE for a couple of days.. During those days I did not connect to WiFi because I wanted to find out the very same thing you are asking.. I used it for about 3 days and my results were that the battery usage was extremely similar to what I have been used to while using hspa.. And yes you will get hspa when you are not in lte coverage.. If I could swap for the lte version I would do it in a heartbeat.. Lte was fast and the speeds were a lot more consistent that hspa for me.. If you are able to swap for free do let us know!

i have the t999l . I find battery life to be exactly the same as hspa plus. yes... if lte isnt available you will get hspa. Phone works great and data is strong and consistent.
Now for the negative part. Tmobile is slow to roll out updates for the t999l version of the s3. (t999l still didnt get multi window update as of yet).
And rom support on xda for the t999l is extremely slow at the moment. So your pretty much stuck on stock firmware.
and yes...the tmobile rep is full of it. there is no way to get lte on t999.

no way to swap. all tmobile offered me was a 167$ for my old s3. and i have to pay the 450 difference for the t999l. terrible.
that being said though..if you can get a t999l for 350-400 on ebay...its worth it. because in NYC....the lte is strong dependable. and hspa as back up is very serviceable.

Only some have got the L from a warranty or ins claim.
I'm afraid you'll be outta luck though on getting it swapped.
Roms don't matter. Every rom in the dev section can work. Some you have to edit the script, most will flash with no problems.
Don't expct to see many T999L roms until a dev gets one, which I doubt will happen since they're more likely to upgrade to the S4. But it shouldn't matter because like I said, the T999 roms should work fine.

Yeah I found the battery to be the same if not better, and I was on lte for about 90% of those days
And I tried to swap too but they told me they could only offer $150 for mine if it was in really good condition, which it was, so I didn't do it

I'm sure if I make a big enough stink... Cuz I asked specifically about this device getting LTE once tmo launched it. He swore up and down yes, lol yeah right. I originally got the s2 and swapped it up for the s3, same guy who sold said he'd do it

Just called. The rep said he would right now if he could... But the problem lies in the 30 day exchange system. They cannot override, even if I paid a restocking fee, the system that enables you to do a swap. But, he did say call tmo corporate and try to get through to loyalty... They can override and he said he'd be upset too and thinks its silly to release a second device. Will update once I get through to loyalty

I cannot guarantee this will work for all of you, but here is what happened:
Called customer support and spoke to a lady who came from sprint, so she understands my curiosity and praise for tmo coverage/speeds. She gave me the spiel of LTE not being everywhere, wait for a newer device, etc. But she did say she could transfer me anyway to loyalty. After talking about tmo vs sprint in terms of LTE rollout, and laughing and how terrible sprint is, we parted ways and off we went.
Spoke to a gentleman named AJ, but the system has him down as Andrew. I expressed my concerns for my rep telling me I'd receive LTE on this variant once LTE rolled out, firmware updates, etc. He said he could send me a device, NOT GUARANTEEING it would be LTE, but most likely. Chances are it'd be refurb'd, but he'd send it AND waive the 5$ fee. Said I have 7 days to send either device back and could try again if it isn't LTE. Did however say there's a 6 day back order but I'd get overnight shipping once it came in. If it isn't LTE, said I could try again AND he could try to waive again but not a guarantee.
Bottom line, try it of you're somewhat new to tmo. I tried once and maybe got lucky with both reps at customer service. You might too

Regarding battery, unless you are heavily using LTE, you won't notice much difference. Both should throttle down to 2g untill a transfer is initiated. Then they will go up to their best possible. So an lte device on standby should be the same as the hspa one.
As for battery use while actually being used, lte should drain a good bit more juice from what I understand.

This is true, however the way I see it, faster speeds = less uptime = less screen on time = less battery consumption. Idk if it actually works this way, but I'd certainly imagine it to be somewhat relative. Less time loading a page would use the radio and screen less to get the information you want, but then you face the problem of having all that speed and wanting to read every wikipedia article simply because you have the speed to do so.

Well, I just bit the bullet and pre-ordered a blue 32GB GS3 but I'm catching myself already having buyer's remorse. I know that the GS3 won't disappoint in terms of hardware; but I also know that Sprint's abysmal data performance will continue to disappoint. Some friends from work are currently on T-Mobile's Monthly4G plan and are quite satisfied with it ($70 for unlimited everything up to 5GB of 4G). The data speeds they get are just out-of-this-world (10mbps+!!!) However, by switching to it, I'd have to give up on getting an out-of-contract GS3 with them as it will be waaay above my budget. Google is currently selling the GN for $400 and I was thinking that that phone coupled with the HSPA+ network would be a pretty killer setup. Sure, the phone is inferior to the GS3 in many respects, but what good is a phone if the network that backs it is lacking.
Well, what do you guys recommend for a lost, confused soul such as myself? I remembered having T-Mobile about 3 years ago and not being too satisfied with their coverage; have they improved? I'm in Orlando, FL by the way.
Thanks again for your time...
tmobile doesnt SUCK so to speak. If you live in an area where tmobile is strong. It works great. The problem is usually once you leave the inner city they have horrible service.
Im not going to lie ive thought about going back to tmobile. The speeds are terrible on sprint. Im reluctant to let go of my gs2 because i can at least get wimax in my area. Bit the bullet and even went and tried the new evo lte, but returned it becase there is no LTE in my area, and sprints speeds were just absolutely terrible.
I cant blame you, the galaxy nexus is a great phone with awesome dev community. Just remember at 7-12mbps 5gb will be gone in no time!

T mobile does this as well right?
Even if you get to this point, I remember my 3g speeds being a TON better than my Sprint speeds.. And since I can't use 4g on sprint because it has it's own issues I don't mind.
OP I am on the same boat, I left Tmob from sprint and regret every minute of it because of data speed/network issues.
I've been calling Sprint to complain and they have been very nice so far and I have already started talking possibly cancelling and they have agreed to work with me(possibly waive) cancellation fee's.
I'm waiting for the GS3 as well but I think it will be too bgi for my liking, since the GS2 is pretty much huge.
Another option is to get the GS3 on contract, sell it for higher and buy the GN you want.
whoa guys I am not speaking of T-Mobile but simple mobile which can be found here www.mysimplemobile.com. There is no throttling with them and actually its primarily 4g but even there whack 3g is still better than Sprint. They use T-Mobiles towers and you are safe if you get a TMobile phone and use it on their network. Do yourself a favor and try it out. You can buy a smiple mobile card on amazon for like a $1 or $2 then get an old tmobile phone and try it out. I am using my Sprint blackberry world phone and it works fine with it

True but if you activate your new phone, they charge a 15% restocking fee to return it. Not willing to give them more of my money if I'm leaving.
I just feel like Sprint is raising fees here and there (premium data, TEP increase, etc) to compensate for their plan prices. T-Mobile for 2 lines at $169.99 would come out to the same as what I'm paying for Sprint after taxes.
I'm just so fed up with Sprint's data performance in Orlando. It's useless 90% of the time. One of the neat features of the SG3 (even though I'll rarely use it I'm sure), is the Picture-in-Picture ability and with Sprint, I know that'll be pretty much useless to us.

True and true. Only thing is that I have been using Verizon file since December and I use it pretty heavy with text and data. Really if they kick me off I'd be happy to try out that simple mobile
akarol, guess it comes down to what is more important speed or getting the sgs3 on sprint. i have been dissatisfied with sprint for ages, went to verizon to check them out and all they could do was sing the praises of the GN. so here in phoenix I ran speed test on the unit the dude had at the store and on 3g it was getting 3.5mpbs! only sprint's wet dream could even get that close. If it were me (and hopefully soon) I'd try and swing the sgs3 on tmob (or an unlocked one for simplemobile, they are looking good). Surely you have some stuff laying around that could pawn off on craigslist for that extra cash for the phone
Will Sprint's 4G LTE covering your area? I think you should give that a chance.
I get wimax pretty much everywhere I go where I live (Tri-Cities, WA) which isn't a big city or anything.. in fact, it's so small that they had to combine 3 towns just to call it a city, lol.
At any rate, I get anywhere from 5 to 10 mbps pretty much everywhere. The 3G speed IS pretty craptastic, but it's fast enough for buffer-free pandora/shoutcast stations and sync/app downloads. It all depends on your coverage area which you should research before signing a contract =)
I'm debating between the T-Mobile and AT&T versions of the SG3. I'm currently planning on using a prepaid T-Mobile service but I can see myself in the future possibly switching to a postpaid AT&T plan.
If I buy the AT&T version I will be stuck on EDGE when on the T-Mobile network. No one has gotten T-Mobile's HSPA+ or DC-HSPA+ to work on the AT&T version of the GS3.
If I buy the T-Mobile version I won't have the option of using AT&T 4G LTE if I choose to go AT&T in the future.
So: does the T-Mobile GS3 physically have the AT&T 4G LTE hardware, and could it be activated?

I looked into the exact same thing before taking the plunge. Apparently, even though they have the same hardware, there is a trade off no matter which one you choose, so short answer is no. (But who knows, there are smarter people out there who may prove me wrong...)
I can tell you why I went with the T Mobile version if it will help with your decision...
1. TMo ver will work with HSPA on both TMO and ATT (As you pointed out, the ATT will only get EDGE on TMo)
2. I previously owned 2 LTE phones and battery life was horrible. Giving LTE up was not that difficult for me since the trade off was batt life
3. HSPA speeds are enough for my uses (You will rarely ever get advertised speeds with either HSPA or LTE)
Hey Cheez - FYI if you are the second post on a thread there is absolutely no reason to quote the whole first post. How could there possibly be any confusion about what you are replying to?

Got it. Thanks. Even if I go with AT&T I might not even want to use their 4G network since it hogs battery so much? I've currently got T-Mobile and the fastest I've ever been able to clock is a measly 5mbps. A far cry from even the "slow" 21mbps speed that HSPA+ advertises.

Also, ATT may or may not have LTE lit up in your area yet. You may be waiting for a while. I had an HTC Thunderbold and a Galaxy Nexus on VZW for a few years and it was only towards the last 3 months of my VZW service that I began to get LTE lol HSPA is much more widespread as of right now on ATT

Anyway not a matter to me. First I can't wait til next year to get the lte compatible s3 plus no one knows if they are gonna release a new version of s3. Second lte is fast but it eats up your data and battery. The hspa+ is fine to me.
Don't worry too much about T-Mobile LTE as it will probably wont be complete till either end of 2013 or sometime in 2014 if were lucky. Im banking more on their farming thats going to take place essentially will turn some of their 1.9 spectrum to support hspa+. As it stands they have great HSPA coverage and to me that what counts the most right now. Even verizons LTE isnt deployed everywhere and theyre still working on it. My friend has verizon s3 and yes he does get higher dl speed 20mb avg and I get about 10mb on hspa but i laugh when he cant get LTE in some areas where we hang out and i rub in his face that i still get hspa.

Personally I can't really complain about the network the way it is, I like the coverage I have because of the location I'm at I'm always on 4G so that's not the problem. I just think they should have added the support in the beginning because they knew about it before hand.
Seriously, with HSPA+ being what it is, I am in no hurry to get LTE. I switched over from the Sprint, and I love the way T-mobile's 4G currently works. I have a friend on Verizon and one on AT&T. Verizon LTE has more deadspots than T-mo's current offering and switching between their 3G and 4G is a pain, not to mention it kills battery. Verizon does beat us on download sometimes, and kills us on upload. But for the convenience of having 4G everywhere, T-mo is way better than advertised.
AT&T = Spotty 4G and much weaker HSPA+
Verizon = Much higher prices and still sometimes doesn't have LTE in all the places T-mo has 4G
Sprint = Crappy WiMax, very little LTE, and ABYSMAL 3G

Verizon LTE has more deadspots than T-mo's current offering and switching between their 3G and 4G is a pain, not to mention it kills battery. Verizon does beat us on download sometimes, and kills us on upload. But for the convenience of having 4G everywhere, T-mo is way better than advertised.
AT&T = Spotty 4G and much weaker HSPA+
Verizon = Much higher prices and still sometimes doesn't have LTE in all the places T-mo has 4G
Sprint = Crappy WiMax, very little LTE, and ABYSMAL 3G

I hope this is something they are willing to work on, whats a flagship device without all the bells and whistles.
But then theres this, hopes are rising now.

If T-Mobile put out LTE tomorrow, it wouldn't matter with the T999. The T999 does not have the LTE chip or whatever needed to even pick up a LTE signal.

Lol this is long known... (well if you did some research before the phone)
Anyway not a matter to me. First I can't wait til next year to get the lte compatible s3 plus no one knows if they are gonna release a new version of s3. Second lte is fast but it eats up your data and battery. The hspa+ is fine to me.

How does LTE use more data? You mean to tell me that, because it's LTE, that a 5MB file will take up 10MB of data because it's LTE and that HPSA+ will download a 5MB file at exactly 5MB?
T-mobile is pretty evil in my opinion. The galaxy s3 should get the liability to be able to connect to LTE on their network. It isn't fair that they removed LTE capability via a software update. Proof; appleandroidguide on YouTube, watch the first video and you will see
I buy my phones based on what they can do the day I buy them, not what may happen in the future. It would be nice to have the LTE option but I never really expected it despite the promises made by sales staff and customer service. I will go buy a full blown LTE phone if I feel the need.
Sorry but your wrong, the only phone T-Mobile has for sale that has the LTE capabilities is the Note II because its exactly the same as the AT&T version. If you open it up you will find out that the phone may have an LTE radio but no antenna, like the Nexus 4. And really you should but your phone on what you can do now, not down the road.

My Netflix and games and downloads and everything run just fine on HSDPA+ and along with the lte upgrade, HSDPA+ will also receive an upgrade. I'd rather keep my H+ phone which will hey better battery life than LTE....
You gotta ask yourself... Do you really need it?
And if you do ( for reasons such as deeper penetration into buildings so you actually get 4g where you live or work or whatever..not just for faster 4g) then sell your s3 and buy an lte s3 or s4.
Your s3 was launched a year ago..that's a long time in technology. Get over it.
Its like buying a new car then complaining a year later that the newer model has more horsepower and better mpg.

Okay how is it a scam? If you bought the phone when it came out(1yr ago) Tmobile wasn't even hinting at lte. You bought the phone with an understanding of what it was capable of. Most people aren't xda people. They don't go on forums and check out detailed specs sheets and breakdowns inquiring about possibilities of a phones hardware. Sometimes I think its a curse to have such knowledge as we know more than the Tmobile reps or any carrier reps do. The xda community is a minority. They aren't going to change anything for us. They know if people want stuff bad enough they will either leave, pay , or stay where they are at. Tmobile will not bend for you or anyone. You know how hard it was for me to get credit from them for something they did (680++$$) ??? Over a week on the phone.

Just Ranting but here !!
Come on guys Really ? Technogoloy changes so fast these days no and keep up unless you have deep pockets filled with money and still while your standing there while to pay for it a something newer faster nicer sweeter will come a few days after you buy it. This is the name of technology sales my friends. I get HSDPA+ . Sprint pushes out Samsung S3 to people telling them “ Oh it 4G and LTE soon” in the NYC area but out side of the 2-5 miles you may get 3G that’s is it sometimes and another times crap. These carriers for there not for you but for your $$$$. So that’s why I buy my T-mobile phone based on what they can do and for how long. The very fact that you can pull out the sim card and just drop it in a other T-mobile just is a plus. Is this not why we are here because after we Root our phone and we come here for what they don’t give us?
You may enjoy the speed now but think about internetwork operability and the plans to launch voice over LTE via VoIP-based technology and its a no brainer that its something you want.
Keep in mind, it may take entirely new radio technology to take advantage of VoLTE so buying an LTE phone may already be outdated by this year which, besides economic factors, is why I'm waiting to see what happens in 3Q and 4Q
http://www.extremetech.com/tag/volte
If I remember correctly, the T999 gs3 doesn't even have an LTE chip in the phone. That's what tmobile is releasing the T999L that INCLUDES the LTE radio. The OP is an idiot, and if idiots dont wanna take the time to research and learn about stuff, then they deserve every bad thing that happens.
It does have the lte chip but it isn't activated and won't be because they went a different way with lte bands.

I guess I don't understand what the fuss is. When this phone came out for Tmo LTE was not even confirmed. Knowing this, and the fact that absolutely nothing has changed in terms of what has been said about this phone from either Tmo or Samsung about this phone having lte capabilities, there is no scam. We can wish that it was built with the compatible hardware, but the bottom line is that things could be worse, we could be stuck on sprint...

where I would disagree is in your statement about nothing has changed. I too was told multiple times before buying the phone towards the end of the year that it was lte ready and would get it once it came out.
The phone has an LTE amplifier for 700mhz and 1700mhz bands but no modem is mentioned. I would be curious to see a teardown of the V model... Its supposed to be identical to T-Mobile from what I understand...
So it has the lte radio but not the correct one? I been reading different threads on this figuring out if i was gonna get one but don't know if i want to. What lte bands does TMobile use

Yes, at least they say me that but i can confirm that i've already had and 27 mbts bench on Speed test on my S3
Is anyone having a data problem with their network? I'm in the Everett Washington area and I've been having a terrible time with data! I go from 4 bars to no bars a split second. When I do get bars none of the apps seem to work from lack of connectivity. I use to get up to 20mbps when I did a speed test now I barely get between 6-8mbps. I'm really thinking about changing carriers. Its getting pretty ridiculous! I pay for unlimited data without being able to use the service half the time.
Any of you experiencing this problem?

actually so have i in northen california. i was attributing it to flashing new roms. but im not really sure. in places I normally get 3G, i get "G" service now, really bizarre.
For future reference, this shoulda been posted in the q&a section.
Lots of people having problems lately.
Don't forget the refarming and upgrading effort.
And did you call T-Mobile to see if they had an outage or something in your area?

It seemed to me that T-Mobile, even though they call it "unlimited" cut you back after so much usage. Sure you still get data but not full speeds whether yours is 4g or 3g. They cut the speeds down. It was like clockwork every month.
There was many things I didn't like about T-Mobile that being number two. Number one was lack of coverage, anytime I was out of town, I wouldn't have hardly ANY service.

Its funny actually, I just remembered there's a spot I've discovered in my home that I can get 7-10mbps pretty consistent, if I move out of it I can barely make 1mbps. I hadn't tried it for a while because I've been using WiFi when I'm home because of the horrible speeds, and I just went back to the exact spot and got 6-10mbps from 4 straight speedtests, then I moved the phone a few feet away and I got 1.02mbps lol

Try updating the modem first. Or downgrading it. Also your phone could have started to go bad. Does it happen everywhere
tmobile s3 running wicked. I still use a t9 text app so excuse the errors
I was actually running on UVDLJA then upgraded to the UVDMD5 package which had the bootloader, firmware and modem. The only thing I noticed was better battery life but only about an hour difference other than that it pretty much seems equal to UVDLJA. I noticed that there is a newer version of the package so in going to try flashing the new one and see if it will perhaps make any changes.

@all
Try not to be too quick to bash on T-Mobile for poor speeds. They are refarming the AWS and PCS bands and rolling out LTE all over the place.
This is a nationwide project so it is reasonable to expect some issues.
Suggestions:
Call support to ask about any outages or upgrading in your area.
Try out the different modems and tweaks in my thread.
Give it a week. (Shouldnt take that long if they're upgrading, but just to be fair)
If you still see no improvement start writing/emailing/calling and posting on the T-Mobile support forums. If this many people are having problems and they get bombarded about it, it may force some action. Be persistent if it comes to this point.
I really do think that given time, everything will go back to normal, and maybe even better.
Also, for those of you who ALWAYS use their mobile data, even when wifi is available, just switch to wifi please! It saves your battery and if there is any network congestion everyone will benefit.
One last thing. Once the network in your area has been upgraded, you may find that the modem that was the best for you before is no longer. Retest, and update the map in my radio thread so everyone can benefit.

The only change is the updater-script. There is no benefit to reflashing if you already have. You won't see any update to md5 till samsung releases it.

In light of LTE being unofficially turned on yesterday here in Denver, my 1700 band speeds cut in half. The fastest consistent speed I could get was about 6Mbps with the average being 3-4.
I locked my phone to 1900 WCDMA and guess what? Back to 11-12Mbps. Faster upload too, 2.3-2.5Mbps. My initial fears about moving HSPA to 1900 may have been completely wrong. That is probably why my phone prefers the 1900 band now and has for a few months.
Long story short, give it time, everything will stabilize when the network upgrades are complete.
Anyone that wants to experiment with speeds on the different bands, from the TouchWiz dialer (sorry this doesn't work on any ROM lacking TouchWiz), dial *#2263#, go to WCDMA band preference and change it to either 1700 or 1900. This will lock the phone to WCDMA only though so if you don't have a strong WCDMA signal in your area your calls can and will drop. If this is the case, just go back into the menu and set it to automatic. Generally the phone will continue to prefer whatever band it was locked on until you reboot your phone anyway but at least this way it can switch bands for call purposes.
Meant to post this here, but somehow put it in the wrong thread....
I think I may need to sleep at some point!!
Sorry for all the reading guys, but just a little more.
There have been several threads opened recently on this exact subject. Seek them out as you will find some other things to try. Some have worked for some people while not others, so ymmv.
This is a post from EtherealRemnant. You have to do this from the stock dialer, but give it a shot.
Start a big download and go to the dialer, input *#0011#. Take note of the band you are on (2 or 4) and which items have a 1 on them out of HSPA and HSDPA. If you are on band 2 and see a one next to either of those options, you can try forcing 1700 by using *#2263# and choosing it under WCDMA. This will cause you to lose service if you have poor 1700 coverage, particularly for voice calls but you can always set it back by going back to the main 2263 menu and hitting automatic.
If those don't work or you see zeroes have you gone into phone status to see if you have an IMEI? Because that will lock you to UMTS. Shortcut to find out - *#06#

I too, live in Everett WA, but a tad closer to Mill Creek. My map shows I am 75 meters from the closest tower, and Tmo keeps telling me that a tech has checked the tower's operation and found it to be working fine... I don't think their tech is as thorough as I would be. I envision some lazy turd driving near by and says... "yep it's working, and leaves, parking somewhere and chalking up a few hours of naptime and writing up a worksheet making it look like it was a completed job. I have wrestled with TMo for quite a while with the same problem you have. I have a repeater installed in the house on the third floor, and it hardly helps, but any small gain coupled with others have actually made my phone, at least, able to make calls! I have tweaked using a lot of different things, and have found this most beneficial.
Using stock rooted 4.1.1 OS (root66)
Baseband UVDLJC
and the 1900 freq.
My sig still jumps all over the place (like yours) but at least now, I hardly ever have NO SIGNAL.....
Believe me, I have got on Tmo's case like something fierce..... They finally offered to even cancel any charges for my contract termination, but that was not my point for complaining! I just wanted to be able to use the phone, and it wasn't possible at that time. Now, at least, the phone works, I can walk 100 ft to the street, and get full bars, 4G, so I know there is coverage, but indoors, it's not that good. The funny part is that all the main roads have GREAT 4G Coverage, and in our community, indoor reception is not the greatest, to say the least.
Bottom line, you are not the only TMo client that is having problems and hopefully, the Doc's right!
Let's hope that the reception gets back to being as good as it was, or maybe even better!
Good Luck, and Aloha!
