Is there a Jelly Bean 4.2 update available (via custom ROM) yet that is stable? I will not like going from 4.1.1 on my HTC to 4.0 on S3. But I could wait a couple weaks for official update. Would be nice to go to 4.2 ROM directly from 4.0.

Everyone is in development working hard with the source code at the moment. But its very tedious work as task650 joked about when someone asked for an ETA.

They don't even have 4.1 out yet!!

You have me really intrigued. You went S3 - one x+ - S3. I'm dying to know specifically why. Have 8 days left that I can go back to at&t and exchange for S3.
Had the S3 and loved it. Kinda big for me but came from the iPhone so it was a blast. Never had an issue with it and liked the big development that followed.
The only reason I switched is I thought (assumed) that the Tegra 3 quad core would of been better than it was. Also Jelly bean had me intrigued. What I quickly figured out is that the snap dragon was just as fast in real world use. Also once I had Google Now it didn't seem as cool as before I had it. And the multitasking for Sense is AWFUL!
For me the S3 is just much better. A nicely built 4.6" S3 would be sooooo money for me

I'd like to here more on the comparison. On Samsung I will definitely flash to 4.2 when available. I imagine 4.2 ROM will be available for S3 way before One X +? That's the advantage of being most popular phone AND having been around a few months. Downside is, it will be replaced with S4 in a few months but that's technology. I heard screen on HTC is better, but maybe not THAT much better. I don't play games so Tegra and Better Screen maybe isn't a big deal for someone that doesn't play games. I want stability, decent battery life, decent wifi strength, and fastest updates / latest ROM. I know Nexus 4 is probably best choice but I want more than 16GB so this leaves only S3 32GB as best choice. I really like the hardware and Sense on the One X+, 64GB storage, and JB 4.1.1 stock.
I will definitely see if I can run WiFi Analyze in store on S3 if I do try to exchange.

So it seems that Sammy has released ICS stock for SGS3 and SGS2. I'm hoping that this makes it to all versions or at least we can use the base to slap together something for us here. Long shot, but you can always hope....

Well technically the Epic touch is still on Gingerbread so I don't think they would be able to port to our phone yet.
Once the source is released a good developer could build a stock AOSP ICS ROM for our phone...
It would be nice to start from a un-modified Android ROM so that we could have something similar to CM9 with tweaks specific for only the E4GT.

I totally agree with you on ICS based ROMs are buggy and laggy. I've tried a few now and I haven't really been blown away with ICS so far. And I agree with the need for an official build for our ET4G's.
But I don't think it's Samsung's fault totally, I'd almost place most of the blame on Sprint. The international GS2's have their ICS update, and we all know to well that the ET4G's update to ICS is being worked on and tweeted by Sprint. A good portion of our ICS custom ROMs come from Sprints development and leeks, so it's there.
Sprints got a few new ICS devices out like the new Nexus and EVO. Plus more in the works for this summer, mainly the GS3. I always feel that most of the "feet dragging" on updates are done by the carriers. Why would they be concerned with updating last year's hardware, it only costs them money. When they could focus on selling us the next big thing with all the new bells and whistles and make some money. But hey that's just my opinion on the it.
For my money I'm sticking with 2.3.6... I've been running a stock, rooted, debloated rom as well as the stock kernel and modem for the last few weeks now and loving it. Using GoLauncherEX as my launcher I get no lag, and haven't had to deal with any lockups, random restarts or apps not working right or not at all.
Updates are always going to be an issue... I remember the wait for Froyo, it finally came out and most of us were disappointed with it. Then the wait for Gingerbread started... It fixed a lot of issues, but over the last year or so with the release of 2.3 and it's minor updates Gingerbread has become very stable and fast. Especially on devices like our ET4G'S, Gingerbread was originally written for lower spec devices so... On a device that's capable of running ICS it runs like a dream. But again that's just my opinion.

Are you talking about the Galaxy Nexus on the left? In the case of Galaxy phones, Samsung will never release a plain ICS version w/o touchwiz. Just gotta wait for kernel source and aosp rom developers to mess with it.

I just came back to the Epic 4G Touch after having a Galaxy Nexus for a bit (bought one at launch and I'm selling it now) and damn it feels good to have this phone again.
I really wanted to love the GNex... especially the software buttons... but the battery life was complete sh** (I was lucky to get 8-10 hours) and certain things just weren't as smooth. Not to mention not being able to use my favorite live wallpapers because while everything runs like butter on the E4GT, it'd cause a very noticeable stutter/lag in the UI on the GNex. Oh, and the camera on the GNex is also crap in comparison.
Anyhoo... those of you that are running the leaked 4.0.x ROMs, how's the battery life?
I'm just fine using ADW EX until the 4.0 update hits... at which point I'll immediately install Apex Pro again... but I hope they don't wait until after the Galaxy S3 hits to push out the OTA to our phones.

The GNex is really not a "better" phone...and since I probably won't even root this thing, I'm not that concerned about development.
I Nexus is a great device, it's not quite as fast as the Epic Touch, but it gets the job done. The thing I disliked about the Nexus is the screen time didn't come anywhere near the Epic Touch and I'm a heavy user. So for medium-light users, the gNex would be perfect. I swear it's got to be the penTile screen on the Nexus that's hinders the screen time as far as battery life goes. I hear the SGSIII has penTile too, but it's a new ugpraded version of it?
I heard that Franco kernels for the Nexus had amazing battery life...I don't get eight to ten hours battery life on my Epic Touch on CM9 alpha 5 due to no kernel source...my phone lasts forever on Caulkins el29 based rom ...all in the kernel, brah.

So I had the Verizon Galaxy Nexus running Jelly Bean and today I sold my nexus and bought the SIII. I never realized how much software matters over hardware! Sure the SIII has more ram and a slightly better camera but I will tell you while I miss my nexus!!!!!
1. Stock OS - I hate the fact why on my SIII I cant organize my apps into other app folders. I feel like I am running android 2.4 and not 4.04!
2. Jelly Bean- I love project butter (even though the Siii is still smooth) and I way prefer googles voice assistant alot more
3. Build- I think I am one of the few that prefer the the size and material of the nexus. Even though the nexus is close in size, I still feel the
S3 is just too big. Not to mention I prefer the rubberized feel on the nexus.
4. On screen menu keys. Just have not got used to the S3 and dont know if I ever will.
5. Ability to swap roms. Being that verizon has a locked bootloader on the S3 and there are no working Jelly bean roms, I feel by the time
Verizon upgrades to Jelly Bean I will be counting down the days till the Galaxy Nexus 4 comes out!!!!
*****Thinking about selling my S3, but dont want to waste an upgrade on a new phone so just may give it to family and buy my nexus back***
Bottom line.... I miss my nexus
That's why I did not buy it

even though you can slap a cyanogen onto a non-nexus device, it will took longer than on nexus. On Nexus, Google update new version, the longest you have to wait is one week before a build is surfacing. But nowadays our dev are super so it only took few hours lolz, and with pretty much everything working most importantly.
With non-nexus, NO~~ it took ages to wait for this driver, that source code wtf wtf bla bla bla~~ I've been there with SGS2 and One X, regretted my choice. and you cant enjoy the true feeling of AOSP too. you'll notice you need TW or Sense for a better hardware experience like the camera, etc etc.
oh as asdfasd2 said, yes i agree. Samsung does sucks with their source codes. CM was long enough on SGS2 and still, after they release the codes, devs are having headaches fixing what were supposed to be fixed. Luckily Nexus S and Gnexus are handled by Google, not them.
i must confess i was feeling a little tempted myself but ever since the nexus 7 release i cant take the damn table off my mind just waiting a couple of weeks to see if a nexus 10 is gonna be release but i cant wait a lo more

my friend his galaxy s2 was in a bootloop, couldnt access cwm, needed to flash the stock firmware via odin.. and how the fck did i needed to know which firmware to choose. so many regions and ****... so I flashed the stock rom, needed to root again, flash cwm again... just a clear headache.
if this situation happened on a gnex, i could have fixed it in 5 minutes instead of 5 hours.

Its an amazing phone. Recommended. It feels so good in your hand , the curve makes it a sexy phone. If coming from a phone with menu buttons you'll be HOW DO I USE THIS BABY!?. but you'll get used to it, in 1 day you'll be used to the Soft keys. Best part is ... CUSTOMIZABLE SOFT KEYS!!! WOOOOOO!!!
I recommend Team Bamf. Its stable and fast and nice. but if you are a person that doesn't care about bugs and just cares about the amount of features I recommend a Nightly. They aren't buggy but may have a few quirks here and there. Jellybro is the best CM10 rom out there in my opinion.
Don't be a dumbsh*t like me and hold the phone upside down the first time you get it.
You should have seen how exited I was coming from a stratosphere, I felt like Ralphie, from the movie A Christmas Story.... lol

Yeah right now I have a droid 3 and its a great phone. The developers over there are rally having problems though and I like having the big choice of roms, kernels, over clocking!!! Lol

I just traded in my stratosphere for a gnex yesterday. I've been lusting after a pure Google phone since the g1 but never got my hands on one. This device is amazing. In fact I'm about to flash stock jb right now.

thought the whole point of project butter was a smooth, non choppy nexus here... that's not the case at all on every jb rom I've run. currently on cm10 now and it's just ridiculous how the launcher is choppy even using an aftermarket launcher like nova. it gets caught up switching screens, switching between apps etc. I never had ics on my nexus, but I'm wondering if I should flash an ics rom for a better experience? or just go to the stock ota that came out for verizon lately?
**EDIT**
pretty much just came to the conclusion that running the AOSP roms were laggy for me. flashed stock OTA JB rom, and it's MUCH quicker with less stutter, even with every home screen filled. woo!

ok so my question here is, how is the ota? is stock jb that came out nice and smooth, or what? I'm looking into how to grab it and flash it now but the dev section here is just full of a million roms

I get occasional lag, but I'm not seeing this full blown lag that you speak of. People complain about lag on jellybean, they should have tried the nexus one on eclair. Then they would appreciate the improvement.

Well this thread sucks. I'd rather have lag than be stuck with an iPhail 5.

Either way, my s3 on touchwiz is like ten times faster than this thing on aosp and that worries me!

Try a bugless ROM, there are plenty of other stock JB ROMs you can flash, CM10, AKOP and Paranoid ROMs are still not 100% yet.
Cm10 is not stable!
Nexus is extremely smooth on jellybean...
Maybe you should try the stock rom? or maybe an aosp based? With just a bit of ectra features but really running a stock jellybean undernesth it?

i'm actually going to check out the stock OTA right now. like i said, i've never run the nexus stock, but i'd like to give it a shot
Try Xenon by fire and ice that's is a extremely consistently smooth ROM that's one of the few ROMs that are smooth but I'm with you on this one lag is extremely annoying where on supposed high end phones an dealing with this crap

Use trickster mod and adjust the interactive governor settings, faux kernel is most responsive imho

Not quite sure what the issue is here... I've run three different ROMs on my Nexus and all have performed very well without any lag:
Bixie's modified Stock
AndroidME w/ Trinity
AOKP w/Franco
Peoples idea of a no lag experience varies. The iPhone has always given a smooth UI that no one besides windows has able to mimic. Androids project butter filled in most of the gaps and made the experience a LOT better but its not 100% lag free - it is tolerable by those of us who came from the pre-JB days.
The stock ROM won't give you a smoother UI but only a more stable bug free experience.
I would suggest you learn about the device in hand and understand that its a year old and compared to an S3 it gets its socks blown off in terms of performance graphically.

Currently running Jelly Belly 8.4 with Faux kernel. Running super smooth with virtually no lag.
On a side note, I see you seem to be quite negative when it comes to the Galaxy Nexus. First, you complained about the camera, now that it lags a lot with JB. Maybe you need a different phone?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
Stock has only lagged on me with live wallpapers, when switching screens. Your issue with optional launchers is a common topic, because they're not yet fully optimized for jb. And your s3 is smoother because by comparison, it has a monster gpu. Finally, if you check out other forums, you'll also find common topic that project butters full effect is very difficult to implement in custom roms.
I777 gets it done, gnex just for fun
/facepalm
