So I had the Verizon Galaxy Nexus running Jelly Bean and today I sold my nexus and bought the SIII. I never realized how much software matters over hardware! Sure the SIII has more ram and a slightly better camera but I will tell you while I miss my nexus!!!!!
1. Stock OS - I hate the fact why on my SIII I cant organize my apps into other app folders. I feel like I am running android 2.4 and not 4.04!
2. Jelly Bean- I love project butter (even though the Siii is still smooth) and I way prefer googles voice assistant alot more
3. Build- I think I am one of the few that prefer the the size and material of the nexus. Even though the nexus is close in size, I still feel the
S3 is just too big. Not to mention I prefer the rubberized feel on the nexus.
4. On screen menu keys. Just have not got used to the S3 and dont know if I ever will.
5. Ability to swap roms. Being that verizon has a locked bootloader on the S3 and there are no working Jelly bean roms, I feel by the time
Verizon upgrades to Jelly Bean I will be counting down the days till the Galaxy Nexus 4 comes out!!!!
*****Thinking about selling my S3, but dont want to waste an upgrade on a new phone so just may give it to family and buy my nexus back***
Bottom line.... I miss my nexus
That's why I did not buy it

Cyanogenmod will solve your issues. Its quite a good rom which brings all the goodness of pure andoid builds to non-nexus devices.

If its not in the Verizon GS3 section then no. And it will be a while until CM9 fully works in that phone... which is why I love my gnex.

Same boat had the s3 for about 3 days and decided to go to the nexus the battery sucks on this phone but with the gs3 I felt lime it was a broken phone waiting to happen.. gnex feel a lot more solid and feels smooth software wise...

Unfortunately cyanogen mod in other phones will always have quirky bugs due to Samsung proprietary blobs..
I had the s2 since 2 weeks ago with cm9 and it still had lingering issues (wacky compass which affected gps, no tvout, volume not returning to normal after notifications with headset)

Glad I was able to choose my Nexus over the siii. I'm glad I didn't have to make the mistake before hand. Google FTW!
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
even though you can slap a cyanogen onto a non-nexus device, it will took longer than on nexus. On Nexus, Google update new version, the longest you have to wait is one week before a build is surfacing. But nowadays our dev are super so it only took few hours lolz, and with pretty much everything working most importantly.
With non-nexus, NO~~ it took ages to wait for this driver, that source code wtf wtf bla bla bla~~ I've been there with SGS2 and One X, regretted my choice. and you cant enjoy the true feeling of AOSP too. you'll notice you need TW or Sense for a better hardware experience like the camera, etc etc.
oh as asdfasd2 said, yes i agree. Samsung does sucks with their source codes. CM was long enough on SGS2 and still, after they release the codes, devs are having headaches fixing what were supposed to be fixed. Luckily Nexus S and Gnexus are handled by Google, not them.
i must confess i was feeling a little tempted myself but ever since the nexus 7 release i cant take the damn table off my mind just waiting a couple of weeks to see if a nexus 10 is gonna be release but i cant wait a lo more

Hey I know this should be in Development Forum but I'm not allowed to post there yet, was wondering if it would be possible for a Dev to make a ROM to run Cupcake/Doughnut/Eclair on the GNexus?
Obviously not for a daily driver but for simple curiosity to its possibility and its speed. I imagine that on such a powerful device such a simple OS would run blazingly fast.
Feel free to repost this in the right forum, actually please do.
AJ
Q: Why the hell would you want to do that ? :| You want fast ? Try a 4.0.3 ROM and that's it. End of story.
I wouldn't use it daily, I just never got to use the old android versions and I think it would be a cool gimmick. If the G1 can run ICS why can't the Nexus run Cupcake?
I'm currently running the AOKP (Kang Project), I'd say its the best ICS ROM I've come across
Why would you ever want to do this? it would be equivalent to taking your PC and putting windows 95 on it.....Why would you. 4.0.3 ICS works fine, it doesn't slow the phone down any, downgrading to an older OS isn't going to show you some amazing massive speed increase.
While it may be possible, I think you can assume from the tenor of the responses so far that it isn't too likely that you'll find a lot of people interested in investing the time to make it happen.

This may be the only constructive reply here, thank you. I just wondered if it would be possible or if anyone else was curious enough to try it. Never mine, I'm holding out for a sense ROM, again not a daily driver just a time to time use thing
as ittekaimus said, you'd be unable to run those.
all those versions of android required physical buttons, so you won't have home, back, or menu unless you added softkeys, would would basically require a rewrite of the original code. and no one is going to do it.

Would be a hard sell to a dev.
Essentially you would be asking "Can you waste your time porting an older OS to my phone that not many people will use, will provide no real benefits, and will require back porting drivers?"
Now if it did come out it would be cool (choices are nice) but I four it will come out.

Yes just fun.
I sometimes wonder if maybe ics is what slows down this amazing phone.
I also wonder (cause many people compare the gnex with the s2 and say s2 is faster) I know the processors are a difference but not that huge of a difference so I wonder if gingerbread is what's keeping the s2 faster for or noticeably faster then the gnex with pics I wonder if ics will slow down the s2 as well. Idk just thoughts just fun.

ICS slowing down the GN? what?
Gingerbread isn't even optimized for multi-core phones.
gnexus has to run faster with ics.
I believe ics is made for the galaxy nexus. to this specific device. therefore ics should definitely be faster.
putting gingerbread on this would be hard cause we only have on-screen buttons.
and you don't see people putting 2.2(froyo) or 2.1 or even below 1.6 on
devices like gsII. razr. rezound.
why put gingerbread on gnex? it would just be cool but not useful in anyway

S3 is ugly, ugly UI, similar screen but way more expensive.

From a person that hated touchwiz.. Surprisingly and honestly its not too bad.. It's not like the S2, it's much more fluid and optimized.
Besides I got it for free, so I can't complain. 6 months was probably the longest I've had a single device.. Before the GNex I had the Iphone 4s for a month, before that the Sensation XE for a month, before that the N9 for a month and before that the Nexus S for 6 months..
But I'll probably keep the S3 until the Next Nexus

A)The gnex wasn't top of the line when it was released and it isn't top of the line now either (I have one and love it, I have nexus s too). Its still a great device.
B) The S3 looks ugly in ads, but once you get one and see it in person it looks A LOT better. Beautifully styled. (I have one)
C) Touchwiz Nature UX is actually pretty good looking, I HATED touchwiz on the S2 but this is a huge improvement.
I lasted two weeks before I finally decided to use Nova launcher due to TW being a ram hog.
D) The screens might both share the same name (super amoled HD) but they are nothing alike, Samsung obviously kept the good panels for the S3 or else refined the process some more because the gnex screen doesn't come close to the screen on the S3.
No on screen buttons (good and bad) means more screen real estate and the screen is 4.8" and its quite a big difference with the phones aide by side.

if this situation happened on a gnex, i could have fixed it in 5 minutes instead of 5 hours.

Its an amazing phone. Recommended. It feels so good in your hand , the curve makes it a sexy phone. If coming from a phone with menu buttons you'll be HOW DO I USE THIS BABY!?. but you'll get used to it, in 1 day you'll be used to the Soft keys. Best part is ... CUSTOMIZABLE SOFT KEYS!!! WOOOOOO!!!
I recommend Team Bamf. Its stable and fast and nice. but if you are a person that doesn't care about bugs and just cares about the amount of features I recommend a Nightly. They aren't buggy but may have a few quirks here and there. Jellybro is the best CM10 rom out there in my opinion.

I just traded in my stratosphere for a gnex yesterday. I've been lusting after a pure Google phone since the g1 but never got my hands on one. This device is amazing. In fact I'm about to flash stock jb right now.

Traded my S3 today after a week with it and went back to my gnex. I find its actually a lot smoother and quicker than the S3, have you guys who have used both noticed the same thing?

Yeah when it's on touchwiz it's slower. On AOSP Jellybean the S3 is faster.

On touchwiz yes but the s3 screams on an aosp ROM.

Wasn't interested in going back to custom Roms.

My S3 is super fast on PA 2.16. I went from my nexus to the S3 and I noticed the speed difference. Plus better data speeds

Using the SGS 3 in store I was surprised at how slow it is.

To be fair, devices in stores for demonstration are laggy for the most part. The Galaxy Nexus as well, it's not a proper way of "demoing" the phone.
It depends on what model you actually have. If its the quad s3(international i9300) you made a worst decision of your life and to sum it all up Almost all the famous devs are there.

Happy with my GNexus. Played with an S3 and didn't like the feel, or the physical buttons. Plus you can't beat stock ROM even if there are ways to get AOSP on the S3 it's not the same.

Both of my roommates have SGS3s - one is stock TouchWiz and the other is on CM10 and I'm very unimpressed. I won't be trading in my gnex any time soon.

This. Had the choice to get a nexus or s3 coming from an s2 wanted something different. Very happy!

Same experience here. Thoroughly tested the S3 already and the GNex definitely feels smoother and gives an overall beter user experience.
And as said before not everyone who buys an android smartphone can be assed rooting their phone, flashing roms, backupping everytime. It's very nice that it's possible to do with android but it should not be an obligation whilst buying a smartphone.. It should work perfect out of the box, and that's exactly what the GNex does and any other android phone manufacturer fails to do.
