I just came back to the Epic 4G Touch after having a Galaxy Nexus for a bit (bought one at launch and I'm selling it now) and damn it feels good to have this phone again.
I really wanted to love the GNex... especially the software buttons... but the battery life was complete sh** (I was lucky to get 8-10 hours) and certain things just weren't as smooth. Not to mention not being able to use my favorite live wallpapers because while everything runs like butter on the E4GT, it'd cause a very noticeable stutter/lag in the UI on the GNex. Oh, and the camera on the GNex is also crap in comparison.
Anyhoo... those of you that are running the leaked 4.0.x ROMs, how's the battery life?
I'm just fine using ADW EX until the 4.0 update hits... at which point I'll immediately install Apex Pro again... but I hope they don't wait until after the Galaxy S3 hits to push out the OTA to our phones.

The GNex is really not a "better" phone...and since I probably won't even root this thing, I'm not that concerned about development.
I Nexus is a great device, it's not quite as fast as the Epic Touch, but it gets the job done. The thing I disliked about the Nexus is the screen time didn't come anywhere near the Epic Touch and I'm a heavy user. So for medium-light users, the gNex would be perfect. I swear it's got to be the penTile screen on the Nexus that's hinders the screen time as far as battery life goes. I hear the SGSIII has penTile too, but it's a new ugpraded version of it?
I heard that Franco kernels for the Nexus had amazing battery life...I don't get eight to ten hours battery life on my Epic Touch on CM9 alpha 5 due to no kernel source...my phone lasts forever on Caulkins el29 based rom ...all in the kernel, brah.

Just curious so if anyone wants to chime in please do ok ive noticed since the last month or so there seems to be 2 roms that stay updated and the most popular which are Calk and StrongSteves and he uses Calk's as base so my question is has anyone tried both and came to any honest conclusions on which is better and if Strong Steves just a themed version of Calk's
I have been extremely happy with Calk. Great battery life and speed.
If you like battery life, check this out;

I was waiting to hear which rom was the best, 4g is a must. Im looking for a rom where everything works, no fc or reboots. a rom that has been used or at least ten days without problems. I just got the epic touch, still have my old epic and I have flashed my old one many of times. Many of great roms but ater a couple of days the fc or reboot, trying my best to avoid that. So If I have to I will wait as long as I need to for a nicely tweak new rom. I have read and strong steve looks and sound really nice along with tnz blend, any help on the matter. Any truely daily drivers or do I need to wait, I cant wait to flash so someone help me out.

Daily driver plus tweaks ... Id say cauklins is most stable. Its a harder choice with these epic devs cus to be honest almost all these Roms are pretty damm solid for being a young phone. A lil better battery here, a lil better reception there...they're all pretty stablestable. Reboots stopped with the EK02 modem for me. And the only fc I've had is between zeam and my pandora folder. But zeam fixed it.
Coming from the HTC hero and the OGepic ...where there was a lot of test and error...were lucky to have some good smart seasoned devs on this phone...not to say they're decent ppl but they do decent work ;D memory leaks, LOS, reboots etc...get stomped out pretty fast.

To the OP; I would check out the Starburst ROM. The latest build makes it extremely easy to flash with CWM. It offers the best stock experience in my opinion. It's an absolutely flawless ROM which is basically a stock Epic ROM stripped down for speed. The most stable build has been out for over a month and it's made by one of the most respectable devs for the Epic.
There are some options for customization as well and you can flash the latest official kernel/modem for the phone. The ROM is 100% stable, I have been running it since I got my Epic and wouldn't run anything else.
It's not a flashy ROM however, I like the build, it's super fast and stable, all of what you are asking for.

I love nexus phones.. But due to the drastic hardware improvements to new phones, it kind of seems outdated to have a 7 months old phone.. I have to admit Samsung did a good job with the S 3.. More optimized than the One X.

I thought I was crazy getting a phone a year, every 6 months? The Gnex is not outdated at all. Good proc, enough RAM, LTE (vrz only), 720p screen, latestest android. Apart from the battery being a bit small compared to that new moto phone its still top of the line.
S3 is ugly, ugly UI, similar screen but way more expensive.

From a person that hated touchwiz.. Surprisingly and honestly its not too bad.. It's not like the S2, it's much more fluid and optimized.
Besides I got it for free, so I can't complain. 6 months was probably the longest I've had a single device.. Before the GNex I had the Iphone 4s for a month, before that the Sensation XE for a month, before that the N9 for a month and before that the Nexus S for 6 months..
But I'll probably keep the S3 until the Next Nexus
I love Nexus Devices the most, but I wouldn't mind an upgrade every now and then..

A)The gnex wasn't top of the line when it was released and it isn't top of the line now either (I have one and love it, I have nexus s too). Its still a great device.
B) The S3 looks ugly in ads, but once you get one and see it in person it looks A LOT better. Beautifully styled. (I have one)
C) Touchwiz Nature UX is actually pretty good looking, I HATED touchwiz on the S2 but this is a huge improvement.
I lasted two weeks before I finally decided to use Nova launcher due to TW being a ram hog.
D) The screens might both share the same name (super amoled HD) but they are nothing alike, Samsung obviously kept the good panels for the S3 or else refined the process some more because the gnex screen doesn't come close to the screen on the S3.
No on screen buttons (good and bad) means more screen real estate and the screen is 4.8" and its quite a big difference with the phones aide by side.

thought the whole point of project butter was a smooth, non choppy nexus here... that's not the case at all on every jb rom I've run. currently on cm10 now and it's just ridiculous how the launcher is choppy even using an aftermarket launcher like nova. it gets caught up switching screens, switching between apps etc. I never had ics on my nexus, but I'm wondering if I should flash an ics rom for a better experience? or just go to the stock ota that came out for verizon lately?
**EDIT**
pretty much just came to the conclusion that running the AOSP roms were laggy for me. flashed stock OTA JB rom, and it's MUCH quicker with less stutter, even with every home screen filled. woo!

Try a bugless ROM, there are plenty of other stock JB ROMs you can flash, CM10, AKOP and Paranoid ROMs are still not 100% yet.
Cm10 is not stable!
Nexus is extremely smooth on jellybean...
Maybe you should try the stock rom? or maybe an aosp based? With just a bit of ectra features but really running a stock jellybean undernesth it?

Use trickster mod and adjust the interactive governor settings, faux kernel is most responsive imho

Not quite sure what the issue is here... I've run three different ROMs on my Nexus and all have performed very well without any lag:
Bixie's modified Stock
AndroidME w/ Trinity
AOKP w/Franco
Peoples idea of a no lag experience varies. The iPhone has always given a smooth UI that no one besides windows has able to mimic. Androids project butter filled in most of the gaps and made the experience a LOT better but its not 100% lag free - it is tolerable by those of us who came from the pre-JB days.
The stock ROM won't give you a smoother UI but only a more stable bug free experience.
I would suggest you learn about the device in hand and understand that its a year old and compared to an S3 it gets its socks blown off in terms of performance graphically.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
Currently running Jelly Belly 8.4 with Faux kernel. Running super smooth with virtually no lag.
On a side note, I see you seem to be quite negative when it comes to the Galaxy Nexus. First, you complained about the camera, now that it lags a lot with JB. Maybe you need a different phone?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
Stock has only lagged on me with live wallpapers, when switching screens. Your issue with optional launchers is a common topic, because they're not yet fully optimized for jb. And your s3 is smoother because by comparison, it has a monster gpu. Finally, if you check out other forums, you'll also find common topic that project butters full effect is very difficult to implement in custom roms.
I777 gets it done, gnex just for fun

I just ditched the AT&T one x plus and went back to the Almighty S3 (hated that phone)
NexusReloaded is my favorite rom out.

You have me really intrigued. You went S3 - one x+ - S3. I'm dying to know specifically why. Have 8 days left that I can go back to at&t and exchange for S3.
Had the S3 and loved it. Kinda big for me but came from the iPhone so it was a blast. Never had an issue with it and liked the big development that followed.
The only reason I switched is I thought (assumed) that the Tegra 3 quad core would of been better than it was. Also Jelly bean had me intrigued. What I quickly figured out is that the snap dragon was just as fast in real world use. Also once I had Google Now it didn't seem as cool as before I had it. And the multitasking for Sense is AWFUL!
For me the S3 is just much better. A nicely built 4.6" S3 would be sooooo money for me

How was batter life compared to the two and did you notice any difference in WiFi signal strength?

I was just running the tmo official jellybean 4.1.1 and the wifi is a whole lot better than it is on ics, at least it was for me anyway

It felt the Samsung had a better battery life but wins that battle because of the removable battery. I didn't really notice any difference on wifi. LTE is faster than our wifi anyways and I'm on the unlimited plan

I prefer the Samsung mainly because of the developer support. Both phones are nice and what the problems I had with HTC, Samsung has the same amount just different types.

I'd like to here more on the comparison. On Samsung I will definitely flash to 4.2 when available. I imagine 4.2 ROM will be available for S3 way before One X +? That's the advantage of being most popular phone AND having been around a few months. Downside is, it will be replaced with S4 in a few months but that's technology. I heard screen on HTC is better, but maybe not THAT much better. I don't play games so Tegra and Better Screen maybe isn't a big deal for someone that doesn't play games. I want stability, decent battery life, decent wifi strength, and fastest updates / latest ROM. I know Nexus 4 is probably best choice but I want more than 16GB so this leaves only S3 32GB as best choice. I really like the hardware and Sense on the One X+, 64GB storage, and JB 4.1.1 stock.
I will definitely see if I can run WiFi Analyze in store on S3 if I do try to exchange.

You need to flash em and find out. All the roms are the best rom.
Better go get your fire retardant undies on cuz the flames are coming.

You should try a ROM for this phone... lol ib4tl

I've tried most of them. Some are great and highly customizable. With that being said I'm currently running jellybean gb08 (stock/rooted). Battery is great phone is smooth and sleeps well not to mention full 4g speeds where the network doesn't suck. ( kernel source not out and I personally experienced slow 4g on custom kernels)

Try Cyanogenmod10.1 wild for the night, Its latest features and easy to use. It has bad battery life depending on usage i don't play games on this rom because i know it has bad battery life. If i just call, text, internet, twitter, facebook then i get about 14-15+ hours.

Try Calkulin's E4GT v3.0 EL29 Its a bit outdated but it has very awesome battery life, i get around 25+ hours.

Try GB08 Jelly Bean latest leak for best featured touchwiz experience and it has nice battery life 19+ hours.

I personally dont Use ICS because it has horrible battery life. I perfer Gingerbread or Jelly Bean

You know that if you get this wrong you might as well put your balls in a frying pan and start cooking!!
So be wise and choose carefully. You need something simple that gets good signal all the time, doesn't freeze, doesn't crash, and the battery lasts most of the day. Sounds like stock/rooted jellybean to me.
If you want to get fancy with all kinds of bells and whistles you can try a custom build rom but you're going to be putting your self in danger.
The safest custom roms may be some GB builds, Calkulins el 29 v. 3.0 is a good set up, super stable with great battery life. ( I have this build on my wife's phone at present ). I was on this same build until Jb GB08 dropped.
Running stock/rooted GB08 /Fl16 kernel /GB08 modem, everything works the way it's supposed to.

Lol @ this thread... first of all, questions go in the Q&A section.
Second, these threads don't do very well since everyone has their own personal opinion. Your best bet would be to read.

Yeah what's the big idea of asking questions here!?!? ...... wait a minute I just asked a question! :what:
Never mind :banghead:

I agree with PanchoPlanet. Use one of the GB08 roms if you want everything to work properly. Calkulin's EL29 v3.0 is an outstanding GB rom, but it just isn't the same as JB.
I use Touched By SG SIII by g_dling84 with GB All In One Mod by tdunham and I have zero problems.

My only suggestion, any of the GB08 JB ROMs. Why? Because of Google Now and the latest version of TouchWiz really makes this phone look and feel like a GS3.
I will not suggest any specific ROM, they are all great.

First off, asking for the BEST rom is like asing for an ETA on here, we just don't do it. That being said I might as well go for an IB4TL...
I will go as far as telling you there are only 3 setups I found that my wife likes AND are quality products that she never has to worry about little nag things. I will not say one is better than the other but all are different enough that you would need to try all of them in order to make an informed decision... I highly suggest you read and ask specific questions in each of these threads. One thing I can tell you is all three of these devs are rock solid players that really take care of the user.

I've almost flashed all the roms, 9 of them.... I couldn't decide which one to use
- Baked Blackbean
- Paranoid Android
- Wild For The Night
- PAC in Black
- AOKP
- SlimBean
- Vanilla RootBox
- MotoBlur'd
They were all excellent
But I finally settled down with the XPERIAnceZen Rom

Edit: added one more Rom to the list
(And one more level to make it hard to decide. -_-')

Those two posts are exactly why we don't condone these posts. There are many great developers here in E4GT land and these threads support favoritism/fan boy type of posts.
Read the OP for the ROMs, check the bugs list, read user comments. Then decide for yourself.
