[Request] My dear Devs - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've been a fan of xda from the introduction of the Google Nexus One. Back then a full Rom would be approximately 200mb. It was already a big deal for my 200kbits/s connection. And I've spent endless hours for the latest cooked Rom to be fully downloaded. Today Rom are getting bigger and bigger, a sgn2 rom is almost a Gb. Some of us compulsive flasher may flash an updated Rom every other day if not more. Don't you beloved Rom chefs/developer think it's time to implement an incremental Rom system? I may be wrong but the Aroma installer seems to be a great tool and may allow you to publish rom updates rather than full Rom every time.
My 2cents, curious to hear your opinion.
P_

Installer like Aroma has its pros and cons however my first intial opinion to your question is that this thread is in the wrong place?

You've reminded me of something I started working on years ago...
I really need to try find some "Android time", as I had a nice little solution to this problem... I don't really plan to do any "ROMs" for the Note2, as I'm not a fan of the whole "custom ROM" ecosystem of late...
But I have some ideas that MIGHT be of use for people particularly on low bandwidth connections... I shall need to do some investigations

Ever satisfied?

I know that you hardcore coders and creators of these awesome works are constantly at it tweaking and improving ROM's. But are any of you guys ever just "satisfied" with a rom? Saying "yep, this is the one for me" a quick paypal tip and off you go.
I am still quite a newbie and just did my first flash a couple days ago. I believe it was vp3g. Overall pretty pleased, and by the time I add some of the apps that I like, and add some personal touches I am pretty content. Of course until I see the interface on Schap's, especially the upcoming things he's got going. That will likely be what I switch to if I do. My key desires are speed, UI, and mostly finger friendly. Thought I wanted iPhone-like but after trying things like ifonz I am not so sure. VERY nice program and look dont get me wrong. Just a bit cumbersome at times. Not to mention a program always running.
Just curious. Because if my phone had came with this rom, and its vastly improved speed I would probably have never looked into this stuff. But I am very glad I did as this stuff is awesome and I tip my hats to you all.
I understand your sentiment as some of us guys flash a ROM a week. I myself try to stick with one until another fixes some misgivings I have or has a feature that I want. I am going to try and stay with my present ROM as long as I can but you do get a bug for these things.
It's a pain in the arse really as just when I've configured things the way I want out comes a tempting new ROM, with new build and promises of improved stability and greater speed...

Cool. This is kind of my thoughts as well. It does take some time to get it to your liking. And then.....
Flashing freakes right here
Cmon, i flash rom's at least 4 times a day!
In the last month I have maybe flashed my rom thirty times at the least .
Right now sticking with v20 dhva lite as I got everything a five mb pp and thirty mb memmory.
Correction : Omnia build out, here we go again with flashing
hmm
I am about to say yes, there is, and that would be this latest ROM from the chef abusalza.
The thing is you always want to have the latest MS OS build, what ever device these clever chefs have ported. One build is guaranteed to be better than the next, and it is I feel a MS testing ground. And there are chefs that are out there now are amazing. A number has left us, and new ones are coming on board.
What a bunch of geeks, but yeah ... I am going to rest my flashing for a while now.
I get urges to flash, but mostly after testing most I go back to CRC's latest.
They just work best for me!
(hoping for a new dev build soon)
muahahahahaha NEVER!!!...jk...i usually try to look for the best performance and battery...most ROMs are the same just with the chefs preferences.my 0.02.take care

That's insane! So you do it stricktly for testing purposes? There is no way to tell if it's "the one" for you in such a time frame. Unless it's just horrible, like I said it takes time to get accustomed to it and make some changes.
I almost feel bad saying that I am going to change my starter rom (vp3G) just due to a few quirks I have found and things I have read and seen on the others that I am interested in.

i know the feeling of never being satisfied, as of now i went through atleast 15-25 roms in 8 hours because i didnt like the last one. No lie, from 12:35am to 7:00AM.. i didnt have much of a problem with it because its a learning curve to see what each rom has to offer and that i backed up all my data

[Q] Do you use a azrael rom???

UPDATE!! Ric is back on board and actively working on Azrael 4.0!!! THIS IS INDEED GREAT NEWS! I am going to leave this thread open just to continue showing my support for his work and would appreciate it greatly if every Azrael user continues to show support here in case he ever needs to be reminded again. Thanks to all that contributed in persuading him to continue developing this awesome Rom!
So Ricsim78 has recently posted in his thread for the Azrael Rom that due to too many complaints to his Rom that he may or may not end up hanging up the towel for good and ending the development of his Roms. Personally this saddens me. So i ask here.....Do you use any of the Azrael ROMS?? Did you use one and switched due to issues?? Should he continue to build his ROMS??? Read his original post .......

I am going to make a few different versions of Azrael X Final, keep this thread updated as progress is made, but I think I have been shown the way by the community here.
I appreciate all the people who do support me. I am forever grateful but I am pretty disgusted by the acts of some people on here. There are lots of ROM options here, so I am sure there is a good new one to pick up.
Nothing lasts forever; maybe my decision will reverse, maybe not. But as it stands, I begin work on one final release of Azrael X. It will be called just that and may well be my last public release of my ROMS."""""
Some may have issues with his Rom but i have not experienced any of these issue nor have any of the other 15+ HTC EVO's that I have flashed his Rom to. Plenty have requested that he use a different base for his Rom. I disagree with this as well. His Rom is plenty fast and plenty stable and if you have problems with how he makes his stuff.....try something else or learn how to develop your self. Its that simple. There are PLENTY of other options to chose from. If your like me and your incapable of developing your own stuff....take what you cant get and thank these fantastic developers that do everything they can to make our good phones the best phones they can be.
IF YOU VOTE ANYTHING OTHER THAN YES, PLEASE DO US ALL A FAVOR AND POST YOUR REASONS HERE. PLEASE LIST ANY BUGS YOU EXPERIENCED. THANKS TO ALL OF YOU THAT PARTICIPATE.

yea you said it. 10 fold.
Yess!!! Thats what im talkin about!!! Everyone show your support for this amazing rom here and maybe, just maybe we can convince him all his hard work has not been in vain!!!! (cross your fingers azrael lovers!!) thanks guys!!
Ok so I flashed my Evo about a month ago and I tried a few different ROMs and I have been on Az's for the whole time. I love it and won't flash anyone else's ROMs now. Please don't go Az.
Ric should do what makes him happy. I did however vote for how much I like his work though and the selfish part of me wants him to keep making them. If he were to ask me, which he hasn't of course, I would say to always listen with an open mind, but not to ever worry or sweat about what the negative folks have to say and concentrate instead on enjoying the process of his work and the majority of us who enjoy it. Here's to you Ric, thanks for everything that you've done so far, I will appreciate it and you no matter what.
I personally don't use his ROMS but I do think losing a Dev from the community because of a few bad apples is poor form. It's too bad he feels this way and I think this thread is an awesome show of support!
I love his roms. I personally love the way sense looks and he keeps that look. Its snappy reliable and awesome on battery life. I hate animations and this rom has the best ones I've ever seen. I use the phone heavily and at 11pm it still has 40% on the stock battery. Everyone says there rom has great battery life and they don't but AZs Rom does. I would like him to continue his dev work but if he must go then that's that. And we should remember his awesome work.

I have been a supporter since the day I rooted my phone. I have had no issues at all and definitely hope he changes his mind. Excellent work and thanks for your passion.
It is my ROM of choice and now use it exclusively.
I love the X rom...
I think the trouble most people have is from the different kernels. I run his rom with the stock #15 kernel. It's the only one that flies on my Evo. Any other kernel sucks!
I use it, and its the only rom ive had NO problems with. Id be very disappointed to see the development of this rom stop.
Az I used 3 other roms before flashing yours, and yours is the one that I liked best. I tried a few of the other roms from the devs that I liked on my hero but I didn't like theirs as much as I love yours. So if you do decide to go please add me to your mailing list. I would be honored.
P.S. I check every day to see if you have posted an updated rom.
Take care my friend

for me is the best so far, even convinced my co-workers to give it a try, and they love it too
I have never used Azrael's ROM, but that's just because I've been stuck on a different ROM for a while now, and haven't strayed from it yet. It saddens me to hear of this, possibly losing a dev from the community. I love having so many options for different ROMs, and I find them all to be great, and have different tweaks and features that fit different scenarios. I have never heard anything bad about Azrael's ROM, just the oppositte actually, people praising it. I am not up to par on the type of comments people were saying about it, that prompted his (for free!!!) decision, but I find that terrible. People should show nothing but respect and support for the devs here, and the hard work that they put in. And as far as I know, it seems that most of the devs here work together, and trade info and what not. I hope that people step up and show him support so that his decision can be reversed.
Everyone is entitled to their own opinions and that is what the thread voting and rating system is intended for. BUT there is a very small handful of members here that need to learn to show some respect! Life isn't perfect and neither is each and every custom ROM. Those who down rate a ROM thread because they have some technical difficulties are morons!
I have yet to see a ROM thread where the dev does not ask the community to please report any issues you find. So how can anybody be so dumb and down rate just for spite?
Rick, I can totally understand how you must feel to put a ton of pride and effort into this nice custom ROM to have it all crushed by a few idiots who can't see past their own selfish moronic ego's. It's a shame these members can't somehow disappear and take their ungrateful selves far from this community and never come back! They will surely continue this childish behavior on other ROM threads. This community would be much much better off without this small handful of ungrateful [email protected][email protected]$!!! Please forgive my French...
Do what you think is best Rick, I totally understand. My advice is to sleep on it a few days and start over... there's always new things coming down the pipes and mabe one day you'll feel better about your much appreciated work. Don't let a couple of dumb punks distract you. We all know your work is at the very top of the list without a doubt. Those couple of spiteful members casting bad votes means nothing to this community. Believe me we ALL know you are the real deal when it comes to your work and awesome support!
Yes and i have never had a problem with his Roms. Hope he never leaves. Rick you rule!
a few words
I've been a longtime Lurker who does not post anything but I had to give this man some much needed appreciation. Hands down this Rom is the best that I have tried here. Its silky smooth while maintaining speed and awesome battery life. I really hope he decides to keep developing but I cant fault him for choosing not to. By the way I just donated to you ric. Hope this helps out the coffee fund.
The ONLY issue I had with his 3.0 rom was the tethering. Not the hotspot but the Android tethering. To this day Im not to sure what happened with it as it just quit on me one day. I didnt blame the rom itself if people read my posts, but I also know I sure as hell wouldnt vote someone down (whatever that is actually lol).
My little brother was talked into (by me), into using his 3.1 and he loves it,cept the android tethering is not working for him either. So other then the tethering issues (which im now leaning more towards rom issue, as im now running Mik and its working again flawlessly), his works been pretty awesome.

Simple Development Question

I love the custom Roms on all three Android phones I have owned and wanted to say thanks to those that take time to offer their service for the love of programming and technology.
As a complete noob to this, how much time and work do the developers put into getting a custom rom up and running? I ask, because I truly have no clue about all the blood and sweat that goes into making me like my phones more...
I can't speak about a rom but I got 80+ hours in my theme.
There a rom coming out shortly that I spent 4 hours working on it. I can't tell you how much time the main dev has worked on it.

I feel like expressing myself about the roms and kernels available right now for S3;

I've been around since cyanogenmod was just another rom along with bugless beast and whatever the hell was running things on eclair/mytouch and ive compiled kernels hundreds of times back when slackware linux 3.5 was out so i feel like im somewhat of a vet and i appreciate the fact that i have a nice little linux device permanently connected to a broadband connection with so much support in a neat little package.
=)!
and yet i never say anything on XDA i just appreciate... unfortunately i cant post in the development forum because i dont say much ;/
big thumbs up to cyanogenmod for taking their work so seriously and being so persistent, you guys must really love what you do, trust me i know the feeling =]
i just got this phone last week and before i did anything i rooted and installed the latest CM with whatever kernel appealed to me in the dev forum and i thought seriously my screen was defective i had no idea it was just a rom/kernel issue so im glad that over with.
i updated to cm22, and the flicker started again when using the 4/20 KT kernel so ill just stick with cm20 +kt420 for now what an unbelievable combo!
and i'm kinda disappointed in AOKP every time i check the AOKP/task thread somebody is always complaining about something that doesn't work... AOKP used to be my favorite. (when the ICS days began atleast.. i loved it on my gnex)
and by the way... to people having problems flashing between kernels, when you flash a kernel, wipe cache/dalvik, then flash the rom again, then gapps, then the new kernel. kernels include more things than just addition lines of code nowadays and thats the simplest way to work around most issues i see people posting about.
that is all!
Somebody is always complaining about things not working? I see every post in my thread and I don't see what you are talking about. 99.9% of the people that post state how well everything works. The people that complain are the ones that don't follow the simple installation instructions. You might need to read through the thread again. Or just try it out for yourself.

+1, agreed.
Just like the guy who wants to request a theme for a rom, that morphology has for that same rom.
READ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Coming from the skyrocket which had a pretty good community I am really pleased with what developers do in their spare time and decide to share when it comes to this device.
There are so many options it can keep a flash junkie busy for a while.
Keep up the great work devs!

I love these threads....I have an idea: If you are disappointed why don't you step up and create a solution or make your own ROM? Its easy to complain about FREE work when you don't contribute whatsoever.
True, don't complain about something people spend all their time on and give away for free ...

We have a large dev community compared to many devices out there. I actually came from a galaxy nexus because I got bored of only aosp roms that were all pretty much the same.
(sorry, had to do it )
Tasks AOKP is by far the best ROM out there for the AT&T S3. I have run it longer than any other ROM i've tried and have had absolutely zero problems with it. I will never use anything else for this phone. Just my personal experience of course.
Whoaa guys ease up on the bashing... OP had only one sentence in his post that was negative everything else was positive.
I think everyone appreciates the hard work and time that devs put into all the different roms/kernels available out there.
Up until the late, I can agree that the 3.4 kernel builds (for any ROM including Tasks) weren't all that great which is why I was using CarbonROM with the BMS kernel (3.0).
But I updated to Tasks 4/23 and everything has been great...super super smooth.
Tasks updated kernel has been smooth. I'm running his newest now, flashes it a few hours ago and love it. The devs for the S3 are wonderful. So many more options than other android phones I've had in the past.

If I'm reading right, OP is disappointed in AOKP and Task's AOKP.... and hasn't tried them yet?
It takes me longer to download a ROM than it does to flash it, restore data and check out all the main features for functionallity..... and you're calling them out by name without trying them?
Gutsy move.
Nothing wrong with AOKP and we have a fantastic aosp community. They seem to be more active then the original development. If anything I'm disappointed with the lack of touchwiz ROMs. All and all. We have a good community and a good group of developers here. /end thread.

This thread sucks, I want the last 5 minutes back
3rd party ROMs are always works in progress. its not like anyone here is hiding the fact that these are all "in development". not all ROMs are "for" everyone, but that's the beauty of it, there's a flavor for everyone.
I personally prefer ROMs that are subtle improvements to the stock experience which give me a more enhanced version of what Samsung intended. BUT, there are times I'll think about getting a nexus 4, so I'll run a aosp/cm/aokp based ROM while scratching that itch. or those days I wished I had a note 2, we've got options with multi window and page buddy fully working.
if you don't like it, don't use it... simple as that. I've never critisized a ROM or developer if I don't "get" their work, that just means its not a good fit for me and I move on.

Huh?
1.) Looks as though you forgot something as simple as reading. Read my post again. If you consider any of that one post as bashing then I think you might need to check the emotional state you are in at the time that you read it.
2.) You're definitely not reading the OP. He pretty much stated that he hasn't even tried the ROM before judging it. That right there speaks for itself.
3.) Please do yourself a favor and grow up a little. Stirring up the pot with the highschool antics doesnt accomplish anything.
4.) Gold stars for you dude. Keep on contributing this wasteful drama here in a development site. That makes a ton of sense.

Am I the only one disappointed with ATT KK update?

Im just venting at this point. But am I the only person disappointed with the ATT KK upgrade? Like most I waited a long time for the upgrade. I saw several intriguing ROMs but the bugs were enough to make me wait. I love this phone and I thought the upgrade would keep me married to it a little longer but that may not be the case. I havent noticed any thing better in KK. Most of the features I want are in the ROMs with the issues. It doesnt seem to play nice with some of my apps, the battery life is horrible, it lags and has even frozen up on me more in the last few days than the entire time before.
Hats off to all the people here. I have the utmost respect for the developers and the community as a whole. Im just venting and really feeling underwhelmed by the update.
There seems to be a lot of bugs with this update. Luckily i have none , in fact battery life is better in my case. It last me around 10 hrs but i watch like 4 hrs of video plus the games my son plays on it. It also hasnt froze on me once. Sorry to hear you having problems bro hopefully with this update development for this phone will pick up.

How did you install the update? Was it OTA or through a TOT file or restore method by esimon. I had horrible battery life but someone here told me to install it through the TOT method and I took my medicine and installed through the TOT method and the phone has played incredibly nice. I am losing less than 1% battery life on standby mode.

It wasnt about the bugs. My first sentence said I was venting. It was more about my disappointment or feeling let down with the upgrade.
Since it was my opinion I opted not to place it in a section that focused on more technical issues. It was more or less a rhetorical question, because I know the probability of me being the only disappointed person are slim.
Sorry for thinking the forum was to discuss things. I also appreciate you telling me that this thread was not needed.

Someone actually did a wonderful job in creating a flashable zip so I went that route. I was thinking I may have to do it the harder way but I will live with the bugs for now. Hopefully someone can make a fully functional ROM with other features based on the official upgrade from AT&T. If I had the know how I would do it.
I love it. Like the new look of apps and my home screen, battery life got better, tap to pay, and lock screen music controls. Only thing I can think of is they could've added more camera features and made it better.

If your having issues you might want to do a clean install with tot sounds like something didnt flash right for you. I have had unbelievable battery life every app i have works, and has not frozen once.
Back up everything with Titanium. Then go flash the TOT. Then root it. It works. The cwm flash might be easy, but the TOT method puts everything where it needs to be. And clears everything that shouldn't be there. No QQ til u TOT! Lol

This is just a thought, find a kitkat rom you are mostly happy with, CyanogenMod or one of the others. Personally, I find CM to work as well as stock and in many ways like it much more.
Also, 4.4.3, or whatever comes after 4.4.2, is just around the corner. There is more of a chance that 4.4.3 reaches us through Aosp ROMs than a update to LG/AT&Ts stock ROM. Who knows, maybe they will push 4.4.3 and what comes after too...
