Hey Devs & Helpers out there,
Just wanted to write a thank you to all the hard work you put in, gratis, for our device.
I cannot overstate how fantastic it is to have a wide selection of roms for our phone, as it gives the user so many options and things to look forward to in terms of updates, functionality, battery life, etc - the list goes on and on.
It's really made this website a haven, as well as an addiction for myself, and has also made my phone usage (and distractions at the office!) go through the roof. Whenever I use my phone in public, on the subway or whatever, I'm hoping there is another user out there who realizes the graphics / interface on my phone is unique, and can inspire them to "achieve" the same. Perhaps I'll even try to do a little programming myself at some point (although my CS101 class in college was probably one of my biggest challenges - and that's for an ME!)
Once again, best regards and much thanks to those hard working devs out there, who deserve nothing but our gratitude and support. Don't thank this post, thank all the devs who put in time day in and day out. Keep on truckin'!
Best regards,
-Dirk
Agreed. I was late to the game with smartphones...buying my DInc2 last July was my first. I was going to wait to root after my warranty was over, but after rooting my wife's nook color, I ventured over to this forum to see what was going on for my phone. Needless to say, it was probably two weeks after browsing this forum that I started enjoying what the hardworking devs have been up to.
I also wouldn't mind venturing into the development aspect of Android but my wife would kill me if I spent even more time on my phone.
I couldn't have said it any better, thanks all you devs and themers for all your hard work

+1 thank you all developers.
I have to agree. I've definitely been enjoying the results of all of the devs' hard work. Keep it up!

Here here!! Another huge thanks to all the devs out there using their personal time to make our phones (and everyone else's for that matter) well worth keeping! There's been plenty of times I wanted to tell a dev how awesome their Rom was but it's taken me some time to get past this 10 post rule. Lol.

haha, I know exactly what you mean. I'm more a lurker than a poster here, but i'm finding myself wanting to mention bugs or issues i'm having with some of the newer builds. That dang 10 comment rule!
...helps when I don't type the image verification code in the title spot
Thanks!

so today i was reading through the FF09 thread, and it seems like this build as well as FF02 have seemed to have taken a large step backwards. but then i look around the development forum and see all of the crazy things our amazing devs do, and i thought to myself:
A.) i wonder what these devs do as their day jobs, because the roms put out by them seem to be leaps and bounds better than the roms put out by the actual Samsung devs.
B.) i was wondering what you devs went to college for, if it had anything to do with computer science, or if you just taught yourselves,
and C.) if our devs are so much better than samsung's, and releasing kernel source would allow our devs to do so much more, why dont they just release it and let guys like Calk, and Venum and all of our other amazing devs go crazy on some roms. its not like any of us are going to be running stock ice cream sandwhich...
so if anyone wants to reply, or not, go ahead. just a few things i was curious about. the XDA and android community has started a hobby for me that i never knew about before, and has even got me considering switching my major next year to something computer related. i would love to hear from all or some of the devs, and get their perspectives on this

Dedication.
I agree Samsung/Sprint should be snatching these guys up but then I'd hate to lose them.
This is why people should always be appreciative of the work that is given so freely, other than donations here and there (or for some none at all) these guys are working for nothing more than the pleasure of helping out and learning.
I love xda without the developers we wouldn't have awesome ics roms or ics for that matter. I appreciate all the hard work they do for all us to enjoy

In all honesty, Samsung is building from scratch, while we're taking their build and tweaking it. It's a lot easier when you're tweaking a base, rather than creating it. But it is disappointing that certain flaws are fixed by people who treat this as a hobby as opposed to those that base their career on this.
I agree with the OP though. I am curious as to what our devs do as a day job/ how they got started in developing roms.

I wish xda can start some shorts of online classes Where u can Learn all this tricks and tweaks. Thanks to all devs once again without them phones would be boring.
I am A Police Officer and in the Army National Guard. I have a wife and kids and they all play sports (and yes my wife stays mad at me because I'm always flashing/developing something for our phones lol)... So my life is busy busy AND I'm a moderator here at XDA to top it off. I have not been to college for ANY of the things I do here... I've learn them all from XDA... Reading, learning, doing BRICKING lol. I know there are some that won't believe that, but its true and I have no reason to lie. I started theming on another site, continued here, and began to build a rom thought, could I build a rom that I like? I finally tried and after about 52 flashes it finally booted... I've been hooked ever since... I started our Team to have other like minded people come together and help eachother... I am now trying to pass on what I know to some of them... But you know what? I don't know everything and half the time I learn more from THEM. So it keeps me going when I get burned out developing, the team just by asking or having me test their stuff... its all so much fun... XDA has been good to me, users and the people who run the show. I'm still here because I love tweaking the hell out of these phones and making it better... and when you guys like it, that makes it even more worthwhile...

Not everyone here is necessarily on the level of modifying/porting things from compiled releases. Its a short cut for us because we have an ICS base to work off of but even without it I think CM9 would be only slightly behind Samsung instead they are at or exceeded in some areas. But the Epic 4G developers for example did some fantastic work and I assume combined with help from CM developers ended up with with both an official 7 and 9, with 9 being from non Samsung derived source.
I found it funny to see the early builds and first 2 CM9 port Alphas to have the exact same issues that Samsung had just fixed in the latest leaks of the period. Just interesting to watch our guys doing very similar work. Some of the issues on sbrissens cm9 source kernel are also reminiscent of the earlier leaks.
What is a job? Im a homeless bum that has access to starbucks wifi and has ubuntu based laptop. I stole this laptop from some guy at starbucks and I think his name was Calk??? Lol.
My job is very boring so I have alot of free time while working.

VeNuM-thanks for all the hard work. The Phone, yeah but especially being out there keeping the citizens safe.
Doc
hero
Venum - for all the things you do for this community, and all the thanks you get on here for your ridiculous roms, you should get a thousand more thanks for what you do for your community and your country.
so thank you, not only for making my phone sick, but for protecting my right to live in a country where i can get an excellent education, and do something with my life other then mashing my volume buttons in cwm all day
Little by little I been noticing the dev's leave from our forums, So what will happen then? Tried myself to start creating a ROM but with no luck.... (laptop acts up most of the time). Anyways, as I was trying to imply what happens when development stops for the Hercules? Guess we will find out soon enough. I don't know if its due to the attitude given to these guys that are doing all this work for free or what? Kinda sad see that 2 developers go. Although their reasoning is personal and private, I can only imagine how they must feel when they do their best to make something for the public and all we do is nag on how bad it is or what can be done to change it.
This ain't to flame anyone or complain. Everyone has their personal likes. That being said why not invest some of that time of criticism and start doing your own. I have not been on this community for long as everyone can tell but I read and read and read. from our forum, the SR forum being that its similar device and its completely different atmosphere between the two. There's so much amicable peoplel there. They're willing to help on another. I just don't see it happening on our forums.Maybe, just maybe we just lost touch of what the community was created for.... to help one another create a better device for our daily use. Not to just constantly put in requests like the Dev is a radio dj . I for one. If its not that then its "this don't work buhuu!!!" It's been noticed here lately that there are sum differences between devices, hardware wise. That alone would drive anyone insane.. Bottom line, implement your personal touch to anything you use in here. That's what will make it your own pride and joy. I totally agree with stating something if it interfered with the functionality of the device. Then again its written very clearly in every single thread of ROM's, do this at your own risk. The developer is by no means responsible for any modifications you do to your device. When you decided to flash whatever it was you did, you took sole responsibility for your actions.
Last but not least, all I can say if it continues to be like this we might to go find new devices to toy with. This weeks its been 2 Devs that left. Next week might be 2 more and before you know it there wont be none. What then? Seriously, what then? With that said I want to say thanks for letting me vent and for creating this site for us (the daily users). Please nobody take any offense in particular for this is just my personal opinion. Doesn't reflect any ones else's but mines. Its a free community so I'm exercising my right to freedom of speech.
this is normal, as new devices emerge, like the SGS3 and Notes 2
Devs are naturally attracted to them
if you want to stay on the same device for a long time, then it's up to ourselves to learn now to compile, tweak, theme, and code the ROMs
a good example are the people over at the old Moto Milestone XT720 phone, that thing sucked when it came out at retail, and it's not very popular, but they took it upon themselves to build ROM from scratch and/or kanged it to make it a great device even after all these years, and the hardware limitation.
very much like the super geeks at the HTC HD2, can you imagine, that ancient relic able to run ICS, and most likely JB in near future
Get a new phone man. I don't plan on staying here much longer. I was tired of this phone 2 weeks after I got it. Its a miracle I'm still on it at all. Besides it has what it already needs. Amazing gingerbread and ICS roms both with great speed and battery life. What else do you want?

By no means it was intended for it to be a complaint as I stated. I personally love my S2, my point about the post was due to the current situations of Devs leaving. It seem like there's other reasons being other than personal. And I see it more and more as I read the posts about them getting aggravated about the constant requests. My point being, if all the above including myself feel they can do better why not begin by learning. Rome wasn't built in a day and i totally agree but I don't get how the community here is so much different than in the SR forum. Again it's not a complaint but just a personal opinion.
@ AllGamer, I totally agree wit you sir... alike a lot of us noobs would love to learn the hows and whats of creating custom ROMs but as like I said on my opener I can't due to misbehaving equipment. I've read pages and pages of the software needed and downloaded as best to my knowledge. Even went as far as to allow another community person to go into my laptop and find out where my issue was. The person himself was a Dev and by no means I was told to do so or anything like that. I gave him my permission to try to help me out so I could create from scratch without any luck. What my point is that maybe we're (myself included) have lost the purpose here and have made it to where we feel its owed to us to make things our way. Then again that's my opinion.

Not only that. I just find that cm9 especially took a huge downfall once cm10 began to exist. I don't believe any time soon our devices will lack development. It's just there is so much out there to be done yet one questions "where do you even start!?" Personally once they get a stable build running of cm10 a lot of tweaks will begin getting added along with much kernel support being created. It's just a speed bump in the developer world, not a brick wall

Looking at it from that point of view I can concur. But just hate seeing good devs run out like that. And to the most part being part of same teams. Weird to me again. Maybe I'm just one of those type of individuals that gets negative vibes about certain things. Just like the fact of it being personal reasons? I don't fully think that was it alone but who knows.
I still stand by my statement about the difference in attitudes between communities. Just seem like there's more "want" to help one another. Here everything is more frowned upon. Favorite reply here is " use the search button" but I'm sure posting a link to answer the question takes about the same amount of time. Or rather yet not reply at all if its just to get in a tantrum about doing it. Maybe its just my personal beliefs. I see it posted all the time, the community is to help regardless if lazy dumb or whatever (sorry about the dumb) but its just derogatory to sum. I'm a total noon but once in a while I have questions. Rather get an I don't know that be told search button is active. Thought it was the principle of this site.
Regardless of anything, its just I see no support on the development here. Either way I'll stop my rant and continue my educational reading.

Honestly, I noticed the same thing in the SR forum almost instantly when I began reading sk8er's CM10 thread. It felt like "old xda" for me... In the future, I'm going to stick to more popular phones/Nexus devices since they generally have much better communities. That's part of the fun to our devices as gadget geeks IMO.
By the way, which devs left?
Remembering Old school Android for a minute...
I know you personally are not complaining OP, so plese nobody take no offense to any of this. I understand what you're saying and I always mod my own Rom to my liking. I had to learn to do it that way because I wouldn't bug any devs either for little personal things I liked. Just my 2 cents, but when I see threads like this, I have to think back to when I first had my Moto Cliq (big mistake there), my first Android phone, and have a bit of nostalgia. We had 2 developers, Travisjames and HandlerExploit. (props to you both if still around) That was it. The Cliq had no software support and updates were always 6+ months after other phones were receiving them, we couldn't overclock it, it was locked up tight, but somehow they provided a good user experience out of that old 1.5 Android Moto Blur. Lol! Made lemonade out of the sour lemons Moto gave us. I helped them by making some themes and learned alot about Android during this time just to give something back to the community. Everyone still begged Handler and Travis for ETA's, *****ed at them when things were going wrong, but considering they were the only 2 devs for the cliq, I always just encouraged their great work and tried to help them work through it, because those were are only two solid options for a good Rom. Whether you liked some things about it or not, they were still better than stock.
My Point in the end? That phone had basically only 2 Roms (in it's early days) for each software release that dropped. No kernels since that wasn't possible yet, and only 3-4 themes to choose from (one made by me after frustration of not finding a style I loved). Anything else had to be tweaked to your liking through trial and error, googling, or asking devs for help. That's when I learned how much hard work goes into some seemingly "Small" fixes or tweaks. Android is much bigger of a thing now, and we have so many different Roms out here to choose from. I feel lucky to be able to choose from: Sammy Roms, MIUI, AOKP, CM7/9 then 10, Paranoid, etc. and then onto mods: kernel choices, Overclocked, undervolted, different boot screens and themes (esp on MIUI/CM's), tweaks, etc. For a phone that dropped with GB I think were doing a pretty damn good job!
I know some devs will eventually leave with new devices arriving, as they have with the last 3 Android phones/2 tablets I've owned, but this community has alot to choose from... I'd personally like to say Thank You, to each and every Dev that has stuck with us, even if only for a little while. You have brough tons of choices, tons of speed, battery life, and beauty to this device. I don't know about anything but themeing myself, so I rely on all you guys to put out something hot. You never disappoint! If someone can't find a Rom/Kernel combo to fit their needs on here, they might never be happy!

It's time to upgrade then
Due to my infancy in time here I cant comment about the past on this site, "but" it still mind boggles me that at some point and time I cant contribute. I don't mind testing by no means. Being that at this point in time and due to equipment faultiness I can't do more than that. But my point is that there is a sort of aura that just don't mingle well with me. One point I seen that has mortified the crap out of me has been just the way people address others around. Like there is some sort of machismo just because he/she knows better or been around longer. Like i said maybe its just me, maybe its just my persona. Most of my posts are either checking in to report any issues with X Rom or so forth, questions or trying to help someone else with any questions that they might have as long as I'm capable of actually helping with.. With that being said, I fully understand that t the dev threads are intended for just that but why not keep them locked up other than to the people that want to test. Per say- as a form of request to be a tester or something before opening .
Just seems that the Devs get aggravated at anyone that comes in asking about small things just cuz there was no reading done what so ever. For good reason tho, its supposed to be for bug related posts, troubleshot and all of that. Maybe implement a form prior to opening the thread of any given ROM that states everything and what not works on it prior to allowing the user just go in and ask frivolous questions ( even understanding that no question is small in importance). But i see that being the main argument in the threads. Thought that was the purpose of the video? These are just my opinions. I'm just a grain of salt in all this sea.
Also would like to THANK everyone that puts forth an effort to make something out of nothing to make the t989 that much better for us.Guess it makes me a bit sensitive to see guys come up wit awesome work and then all the sudden it all falls apart. Either way that's my 2 cents. Thanks also to you guys that took the time to come in here for a read and for the input.
There will be many more devs for the t989. I've read the same s.it more than a year ago on the t959 forum. Their dev section is more "vibrant" than ever.

Funny I was damn sure thinking the same thing myself. I came from a PPC6700 forum years ago where we had a kitchen and could make our own roms which was great. Then I had an Evo, Evo3D, Epic Touch and now Galaxy 2 and I must admit this forum is lacking with rom choices. I look at the development page and see threads last reply was a week or so ago still on page 1. That would not last an hour in the old Evo forums.
I get it that developers leave because of family and personal things but think about it. If we the end user did not complain and ask for this and that which I honestly feel some of it we could do ourselves, would that not leave them to more pure developing time. Which honestly if things are running right or small things need to be fixed and can be done by others it allows the developer more time to themselves.... Jus Sayin
The helping each other out is wonderful as well but hey the I can't find a kernel or where is this rom located in a forum with maybe half a dozen developers and main threads really never leaving Page 1 and you can't find it... Helping fine spoon feeding is another and the laziness is what causes a lot of bickering. I know just give them the answer but what about you helping yourself... I hope more developers come or at least they perfect AOKP JB since thats my favorite..
Good luck developers and good luck community... rant ova!
I hope the devs don't drop out, I just got the TMobile version. $99 @ target for the s2, or $229. Makes the math kind of obvious.

Its not going to die no time soon its just the lack of interest that I fear most. Maybe at a later time or so they might get the ball rolling again but at the present it time seem a little weak. Well that's in comparison to our twin site( SR forum). Like I said before and I'll repeat again, its all about benefiting both end parties. Pops used to tell me and seem to fits well here, "one hand can't be cleaned up by itself, takes 2 to get it the way is supposed to be. " That's all my point is meant to be directed to. Not start world war 3 or nothing. Just feel like we are falling behind and its our own fault. If we have enough time to complain or address issues we also have time to help better the problem itself by addressing it and trying to solve it. Better yet, get this general threads or q&a threads just for that... I've personally seen ROMs with 400 or more pages and nothing is clarified. There's all sorts of people completely lost on steps on how to even install (flash) a certain ROM. There's guides yes but we all been to school here, we know that learning is not easy for everyone. Sh00t!!! Everyday is a learning experience. But some of us take longer than others.
Maybe its just my petpeeve to feel this way. But I know Im not alone when I say this, if there's someone that needs help and I can do it, no matter how small it is... I'll be there to do so.and if I can't help at least I'll learn something by helping that person search for the answers.

Yes. Though TDJ is on a break from what I recall.. He certainly deserves it.
I wanted to create a thread that would reflect what drove me to XDA and made me a member.
One sentence comments will be removed. please stay on topic and be thorough.
I am aware that there are many that have been on XDA far longer then myself. I have fond memories of first entering this HTC forum, looking for help on my HTC Touch.
While this was some time back, I never really utilized the forum. It wasn't until a few years later, that I once again stumbled upon this site called XDA (wasn't I here once before) I seem to remember this forum... low and behold I was here, but forgot my password lol
I have found many friends here and have learned many how to's and how not to's of conversation/communicating with perfect strangers.
I have grown a vast admiration for those who develop and those that contribute
My second go round with XDA came a few years later when I purchased my first Android smartphone.
John R kick'n since back in the day
And then there was Josh... I couldn't wait for another YT vid from him. He was one of those hat you would come to admire
After learning how to "flash a rom" his weekly tutorials became an entity of there own. Here is the first rom he talked me into:laugh:
And your story is?
Time for you all to share:good:
I discovered xda back in 2010 when I owned my first android phone. It was the HTC Desire, beautiful and in the spur of the moment choice I had made (I was due for an upgrade and was at the mall and I was going to go for the HTC Hero but they didn't have it in stock so I opted for the Desire, didn't know what I was in for).
I remember looking for everything about Android, learning about it, learning about HTC sense and what not. I was then trying to find means of a way to get Android 2.2 at the time, hahaha. It was 2.1 and I didn't want to wait for the OTA update, god it took forever to come. Ended up searching up "How to install 2.2 onto your HTC Desire" there were so many links about installing ROMs and rooting + etc. Ended up using the one-click root program (the name escapes me) and by chance I ended up in the subforums for the Desire, learning customizations, what to do when my phone got stuck in a bootloop and becoming a part of "flashaholics anonymous." I was flashing one ROM everyday until I got bored and stopped. Here I am, 3 years later with my Desire still alive, running on Jellybean and I'm now a proud owner of the Nexus 4 too. I was on and off this forum for quite some time, decided to return since I wanted to root my Nexus 4 and which I did so successfully, just trying to find the perfect ROM for that N4 now.
Re: Thank you XDA for....
XDA has become a big part of my life over the past (almost) 2 years! I have made some great friends and learned a great deal about android over my time here! If it wasn't for XDA I would still be stuck with a keyboard that skips every other letter I type and a gps that wouldn't work no matter what! Most importantly, to me, is the friendships and bonds I have developed with the community all around XDA though. That means so much more to me than any rom/kernel/theme/mod ever could! So thanks for brining more friends into my life XDA, I truly appreciate it! And a big thanks to qbking77, without your videos, I would probably still know nothing!:thumbup::thumbup:
Thank you XDA for....
Thank you XDA & it's developers for giving best possible software support, help & giving dual touch which Sony said impossible
My story:
I bought a new W8 in about June 2013
First I was happy as it was my first android phone but then I searched & found that eclair(stock rom) doesn't support voice functions & application moving I was a noob then
But I searched & heard about unofficial updates & asked queries on Facebook & that redirected me to XDA & fun part started I saw many roms for stock kernel(I can't unlock bootloader thanks to sony ) first ROM- bootloop (forgot to wipe dalvik-cache) restored to stock
2nd rom brick! (Wrong kernel)
Finally gingerdx worked!!!!!
& my phone was better than ever (gingerbread)
& I registered on xda & started learning new things now I have got more knowledge about android than any of my friends I added extra tweaks & mods & customized everything & I also made good friends here too like Sgt. Meow, dagger, Taj_rocks list is gonna be long so let's stop
ALL THANKS TO XDA
:beer::beer::beer:
My first experience on XDA was right before I got my Captivate (SGH-i896). I was looking for the best phone to get at the time and that one was the clear winnner. From there, I found out about rooting and custom development, more specificly from Team Phoenix. After reading, reading and reading some more, I found myself helping others with the little bit of knowledge I had and after some time it became a daily thing (more like an addiction). That's when a member of TP at the time (NunHugger) noticed me and asked to join their team (you can imagine how happy I was).
I still remember the first day I got to help users carrying the TP crest in my sig, it was one beautiful day!
Kept going with them and helping around as much as I could for over a year. We had went through team merges and split ups but all in good measures. After the early ICS days, real life hit'd me in the face and couldn't be on XDA as much, which ended being less than once a week. But after a few months, when things settled down, I got back in touch with my good old friends and teammates and slowly got back into XDA.
XDA didn't only teach me about developping/modding and such, it also bought me some really good friends, which are like my 2nd family now (''Team Family'' *Pun Intended*). Those people made me a better person, opened my eyes to so many important things and we got through a lot of things together. I definately didn't imagine my XDA experience to turn out like that but I am really grateful it did!

Haha! Don't forget Xtremekilla07 :good: Whatever how much we upgrade OS and add features to our older phones, I don't remember a ROM running better than FireFly 3.0 did back in the days. That was just pure awesomeness!
Re: Describe your journey to XDA. Make sure to thank XDA
Wow. Well my time at XDA started with something simple...trying to get Flash working on the Samsung Epic 4G that came with Eclair. Google search led me to XDA and leaked Froyo builds that allowed Flash to finally work. I was intrigued at the possibilities of rooting and all the helpful people I met here. I absorbed all the knowledge I could of that phone and before I knew it I was the one answering questions as quick as I could read them. The feeling from helping others was awesome. Soon after losing the Bonsai team I had joined as a tester, I yearned for that same look and feel of the Bonsai ROMs. Rather than pester themers and ROM devs to make my phone look and do what I want, I learned how to start doing it myself starting with Dreamsforgotten's awesome themeing guide. It was not long before I figured out the next step of building a ROM....one for The People. But still I wanted to help my new XDA family even more. I began helping the moderators of the Epic 4G forum, 2 great guys in PG101 and Jayharper08! I wanted to do for The People what they did and help keep this a great welcome place for all comers. They let me know about open moderator applications. I was fortunate enough to make the cut. I am still making ROMs for my family here and now help out even more as your Friendly Neighborhood Moderator. Thanks to all my family here!

My Journey isn't as big as others. I started with my first cellphone which was the Samsung Star. A year later I bought the Samsung Galaxy 3 (aka Apollo not the Galaxy S 3). It was the first phone in Samsung Galaxy series and I had no knowledge about android. Sooner I started to find out stuff about android and found a function called "App2Sd" which was only on Froyo. I wanted it and searched the whole internet untill I stumbled on XDA. I hardly understood what a ROM meant and I thought it was something like the Gameboy ROM games. A choose one ROM which had a good theme and was based on froyo and that was it.
It triggered the flashoaholic in me. I tried every rom available.
I used the Apollo for 3 years and now I learned a lot about Android, apps and much more. Now I use the Nexus 4 which is a massive upgrade in all directions. I had neither used ICS nor a big touch screen. The screen really makes me vomit rainbows and waffles.
Thanks XDA.

Re: Describe your journey to XDA. Make sure to thank XDA
Well, my XDA residence started from HTC Desire with which I have a love and hate relationship. Why love? Well, it introduced me to the world of android where computing power is finally truly mobile and fits in your pocket. Why hate? It introduced me to XDA.
I stumbled across XDA when I was trying to find out when froyo was coming to it. At the same time I was hating on it for lacking internal memory. I found out about a2sd+. That was it. I was hooked. Since then I've spent countless hours in xda looking for answers and answering questions. For some reason I finally turned into a noob friendly guy which likes to educate new users where and how to look for answers. Because of that I've "met" a lot of people. We formed teams, we just had good time and we learned together. It is fun.
I'm glad found it. And not at the same time. XDA is so good, it's bloody addictive and often takes over more important things in real life. I guess because I feel comfortable here, and that's thanks to you guys, which are nice and friendly and no matter how different we are, we are a lot more often more similar than people from irl around us, as we have one massive addiction/hobby in common.
Mods are great, they look after us, they are peacekeepers. Big thanks to them for that.
But i truly believe it's you guys, users, that are making xda what it is. And don't let an ignorant noob to change that. Don't flame them, "convert" them into another useful member of the community.

Re: Describe your journey to XDA. Make sure to thank XDA
Honestly I dont remember exactly how I ran into xda, but i remember it was in april-may 2011 when I got my first android device, the almighty Xperia X8, for sure I would've go insane without xda(small ram, only eclair), I really can't imagine how I ran into xda, I didn't knew about root at all, it just happened, so after readin stuff in xda, in june I rooted for the first time the x8(now I can't imagine a phone without root) and so does my journey begins with flashing froyo, gingerbread, froyo again, some eclair and so on.
After couple of months I thought now it's time to start giving help aswell so I joined xda in oct 2011. Since then lot happened, my x8 went through fire and ice, had all sorts of ROMs(even honeycomb lol), mids, kernels and I could talk all day about it. Unfortunately now I don't own an x8 anymore, I own an s2 and a tab2 7.0 but if it wasn't xda(and indirectpy the x8) i think they would've ended smashed to a wall because touchwiz is my ultimate nemesis, so thx xda for all the good stuff i learnt.period

Re: Describe your journey to XDA. Make sure to thank XDA
I got an Android phone back in late 2009 or so and I ran across a site known as XDA because I was finding some tips on modding the OS. I never made an account though, I don't know why, but I made that decision for some reason, though.
Re: Describe your journey to XDA. Make sure to thank XDA
Well first of all, BIG THANKS to xdadevelopers for having an open site for us non developers to be a part of !! It has been an absolute pleasure to be a member here. To learn so much. And to be able to participate in all aspects of development. And to be able to, in return, contribute and help others. And for these things...Thank u XDA !!!!
I got here via the way of the SGH-i897 Samsung Captivate , my first smart phone. Got it after i discovered I had washed my Samsung Impression. So glad now that I got that faithful Captivate. After having it for about a month I started lookin online about this phone and for ways to get rid of the at&t apps, a.k.a. :banghead: bloatware. That quest led me to XDA  It didn't take me long to decide to become a member. But it did take me a while before I started posting it seemed. Read a lot. Then read a lot more. Got Root. Got rid of the bloat. Started flashin Roms, using Odin, etc. and really enjoyed my new found hobby. Then came my first brick , thankfully a soft brick. But that led to me makin my own jig. And from then on, hooked for sure. -- Hence my avatar F5N . All the learning and participating in the xda community has been and continues to be a part of my everyday life, just as other hobbies that I enjoy are. -- Gotta keep things in perspective.
So here's to u XDA and all it's members...and especially to several members, from the forums that I have been a part of, that have become like really good buds that I enjoy hangin out with.:thumbup::beer:

ah the memories.
my trek to xda was due to my newly acquired p500 many yrs ago. I tweaked the heck out of that one. good times.:good:
muchos gracious XDA!!!
So,
I came to XDA in Aug 2008, looking for a way to remove Manila (now sense) from my HTC Diamond.. that day gone.. and today.. no looking back.. learnt.. gave back to the community ... learnt more.. gave back more you know how it is
Re: Describe your journey to XDA. Make sure to thank XDA
Thanks TonyStark for starting this thread! I think this is a really cool idea and an awesome way to come together and give thanks for the awesomeness that is the XDA community!
I too, have made many friends on this site and really appreciate this site's purpose and the comaraderie it spawns.
I came to XDA in 2010 after I purchased my first Android device (which like many others was) a Samsung Captivate. I finally joined XDA in mid 2011.
It was via my Captivate and good old mobiletechvideos.com that I learned how to root and flash ROM's. I think my first custom ROM was Serendipity. I've been hooked ever since. I never imagined that I would meet such an incredible bunch of people and learn an immense amount along the way. I've always been a typical geek and XDA provided a medium thru which to express that geekiness and pimp my handsets out in the process.
I truly love this site and not a day goes by that I don't visit it and learn something new!
Many thanks XDA for an immense repository of knowledge and a truly genuine experience! Without you I would be stuck with Touchjiz or some other inadequate stock ROM!!
Re: Describe your journey to XDA. Make sure to thank XDA
I came here as a total noob to Android and mostly to forums as well. I do go to some technical forums for work related troubleshooting, but I never stayed anywhere for more than a few minutes. Something about XDA hooked me pretty quickly and I read and read and read trying to figure out the rules and unwritten customs here for many many hours at a time, learning, getting answers, then giving answers, and now participating at a higher level still as a mod. My wife started calling it my "jobby". :-/ I still haven't told her I was accepted as a mod.
I still have my first and only Android phone, the HTC Sensation. I ran CM JB on it for a bit but I am back on ICS now but with Sense 4.1. I also have a Windows phone that was a tester at work, no SIM so I just use it over WiFi but it is interesting to see the differences between the OSes. My contract runs out in August so I will be getting the best advice in the world from this site as to what to go to next. Thank you XDA!!

A couple of years ago I was thinking about rooting my HTC Desire, Started searching on Google and of course XDA came up alot in the results so I started reading the forum posts. I didn't get very far in my rooting and sort of forgot about it. Then about a year later my wife started having trouble with her Galaxy S2 so back to Google, which of course lead me back to XDA.
Maybe the timing was better, the stars aligned, whatever, but thanks to very helpful people at XDA I sorted the S2 problems then in a burst of enthusiasm went back, rooted the Desire and went on to root my current HTC One X,
Point is I'm having lots more fun with my phones very much thanks to some very generous people here at XDA.
Don't get me wrong I love my S3. Left the iPhone 5 for it. However lately I've started to get bored with the S3. I tried CM10.1 and had some issues so I came back to TW. I've been thinking about Liquid smooth since I've heard good things. Anyone have any cool apps or games they can recommend to keep me busy?

Start playing with performance tweaks. Improve until it's broken, then rebuild better faster than before! Addictive.
GS3 Sprint LTE - The People's ROM with plenty of Rompnit - KT747 kernel and TK Mod with special sauce - CrossBreeder super butter - Greenify sleeping pills - Nova Prime evangelist - sent from xda premium
I don't know how you can ever get bored with any Android phone with a good community. First of all, there are SO many different ROMs to flash here (TW based / AOSP based / Hybrid all offering so many different things). Once you've flashed a ROM you like, you'll spend countless hours customizing every option in it. Then you can spend time finding the perfect kernel to match it (and undervolting / overclocking takes a while to get perfect). If that is not enough, you can get involved in kernel development, ROM development, or even theme development. The possibilities are really endless with Android. On the iCrap, you're literally locked in to one setup (hell, you need to jailbreak to even customize your homescreen). I can see how THAT would get boring quickly.
My personal favorite ROM is Slim Bean, everything just works and the features offered in it are amazing.

Why would I spend countless hours flashing roms and kernels. My thread has nothing to do with roms and kernels. I simply stated what I ran and what I'm planning on running. My question really is any good apps or games someone can recommend to keep me busy.

Maybe because your post was mostly about going with 10.1 and coming back? That's certainly what most would think. Apps and games, ask more specifically because nobody has any idea what you'd like. You won't like what I run so can't help. ROMs, maybe but apps, no.
When I get bored I look in Dev for ROM's or Kernels that might need testers LOL.

When I got bored I started to look through the Q&A thread and started helping the "noobs" out. It's been forcing me to really know what's going on with the phone and to think like a troubleshooter. I usually will flash whatever ROM/Mod they're having trouble with and see if I can replicate it. I also try to write out instructions in a clear, legible way. It's actually been a bit of a challenge to disseminate the information into a clear, concise form. I know it's not technically an app or game I play that keeps the phone fresh, but this is what's keeping me from getting the itch for a new phone.

Yeah I go through QnA and Gen all the time to help out. But that isn't because of boredom it because I want to and like to. It keeps me sharp for my real job which is tech support for a hospital.

My real job is structural engineering, so I don't get to do much IT troubleshooting (although sometimes my boss asks me how to do something in excel, huzzah!). So yeah, it's not 100% out of boredom, but it does keep the boredom at bay.

I hear you. Me being bored is never a good thing LOL I usually get into trouble.
No back on topic LOL
Sorry OP for a little hi-jack action. The only games I really play is cribbage, galaxy, jewels stars and pac-man LOL not sure that list will help you.
@OP
Here: Whats your favorite game?
And here: What are your favorite apps and games?
Sometimes getting bored is a good thing.
I came from the old windows mobile world, where you had to constantly flash custom roms just to make the thing usable. Never got bored trying to keep it functional.
When I switched to Android suddenly the phone was reliable, fast and did what I wanted, but a little laggy at times. That kept me tweaking the phone with roms until they released ICS for my GS3. At that point the phone was solid, fast reliable, and did everything pretty well. So now I am really happy with stock MB1. Look at all the time I have for other things now!
You must have been going insane on the iPhone Lol. Sometimes I go to other phone threads to see what's going on, but if you post there and they know you have a S3 it turns into an argument, at least that was my experience with the Optimus G. Check out the themes and apps section too, there is stuff you can check out without changing your ROM there.
