All the effort i see invested in CM9-CM10_AOKP with as mayor problem that all the memory gets consumed so that only few applications can run ????
I ask myself why !!!
Tried out CM9/CM10/OAKP(franklin)) and installed a2sdx and int2ext4+ .... just to be able to get some applications running
Not only is the thing getting horribly slow and very buggy it is in fact completely unusable at this time.
Ex standard applications as Google play are completely failing ....
it is possible to download aps and install them manually but then you can not support it any more.....
These are NOT rom's for daily use. not in a long shot .
its back to good old Piethtz who took pride in finishing stuff untill it was WORKING AND STABLE.
Bugs in AOKP (franklin) just use it it fails and crashes
bugs in CM9 lagging like hell practicably impossible to use the keyboard
and do not tell me not to use a2sd functionality it's simply not worth it for 2 applications/not even for 30 ... then Stock roms are way better.
A long as that memory limitation problem is there android notebooks and phones are dead, not worth investing in not in 2012
If their architecture is such that this is killing the use we should abandon android architecture its mis concieved
this is not the quality of windows
this is not the quality of linux
this is not yet .....
if installing multiple applications use a simple symbolic or direct link is getting in so much trouble the real quality of the whole is not Good
with all respect for the work of ericas and ....
signing off
you should know there isnt an old windows phone or whatever that can run windows 8 via an unofficial way.
ics/jb is not made for our gio's, and so, it wont work as good as you want it to be. if you want that, buy a galaxy s3. they even give you a better screen and processor.
so stfu and live with it or get rich and buy high end smartphones.

Did you try link2sd?
By the way I've just installed this rom, and I think it's the first usable Android 4 for Gio.
Camera and camcorder working finally, everything's running stable and smooth (yet).
The only thing I haven't experienced yet is battery life. If it can take 1.5-2 days with average usage, it will pass my high standards that no other non-stock based rom have passed yet.
Oh, and after installing some basic apps(Skype, Maps, GMail, TC, etc...), I still have 108MB free on internal mem.
So no, it's not a joke, it's the best ROM out currently for Gio (a smooth camcorder like the TW Camera in stock would be good, but this is just a minor negative point if you take the features that ICS gives into consideration).
I say this after trying about 30 different ROM's in the past half year...
I'm sorry to ask you this: did you pay for his work? which makes you right for komplain about it?
installed a2sdx and int2ext4+ .... just to be able to get some applications running
this is your problem
two scripts that do the same thing
chose only one of them (i recomment cronmod int2ext+ if you want that kind of script, i use link2sd and link only the games)
and in developer settings choose force gpu rendering(for better battery aver all) and smartassv2 or interactive
Some bugs
Can someone please post this in the dev thread? I don't have 10 posts yet...
So far I've found these four bugs:
-(MINOR) Ringtones play only once if there's no ANDROID_LOOP=true OGG metatag in the sound file. By the metatag it seems rather a feature than a bug, but in 2.3.x roms it was not needed, and it can really troll new rom users. Please fix if possible, or write instructions (convert file to ogg and set the metatag, that's all but it needed me a lot of googling to find it)
-(MAJOR) Init.d settings (at rom settings) cause heavy load, and settings won't stay (su permission request accepted of course). It can't be enabled at all because of this.
-(MAJOR) Google Talk from gapps-ics-20120429 FC with "Need GTalk_SERVICE permission".
Tried first by just installing talk.apk (extracted from gapps) as system app, then by flashing the whole gapps zip, then with full wipe, rom reflash and flashing gapps immediately after rom flash, but no luck. Tried CWM fix permission too (no effect), but couldn't try rom init.d feature fix permissions due to the previous bug.
-(CRITICAL) If I go outside the signal area of a WIFI AP (without turning off wifi) and there's no other available connection (I don't have mobile net atm), the whole system crashes when an application tries to initiate a connection.
No response to:
-Touch
-Back softkey long set to kill
-Pwr hardkey, home hardkey
Only removing battery helps, however my live wp (phase beam, the one that's integrated in the rom) moves until that.
It happened two times:
-Wifi dropped due to signal loss, unlock phone, push browser icon, browser icon glows, crash
-Wifi dropped due to signal loss, unlock phone, open wifi settings (with wifi powerswitch longpress), select another ap to connect to, start to enter wpa passphrase, crash after typing 4 chars (some process in the background may have tried to initiate a connection meanwhile)
If you can't reproduce tell me and I'll try in USB Debug to get a logcat dump.
I still say this is the best ICS/JB rom out for Gio, but if you can fix these it'll be completely perfect

installing multiple a2ad.. methods one after the other gives similar errors that disappear when not installed. Up to no one published this serious memory handling BUG in the center of ics cm9/scm10/aokp biggest problem area.
problems in the center area need to be solved if people want to believe in any future for the Rom.
why invest time in any os if people are not assured the main problem lack of memory handling poses a risk of complete failure
that is the reason for the"is this a joke?"
the hard work of the developers is NOT assured questioned nor diminished
I refered to linux and windows as basic fundamental robustness as a base.
individual apps anoi one person.failure into the core make everything fail

you have crash on my rom? R u kidding me ? R u using any tweak? I use that for gaming/internet and music at same time and no crash, try reflashing rom, also cm is bigger than aokp, that's why cm9/cm10 are laggier, but with aokp jb or ics rom isnt crashing

In my opinion I find your AOKP to be the most efficient and stable ROM I have installed on my phone so far. The battery so far has lasted up to 2 days while I have been receiving calls and playing games and its only at 66%! I am loving your ROM. No crashes so far. Thanks for all your (and erikcas, jellaxy's) hard work.

No tweak. Some apps uninstalled from system (trebuchet, live wp's), and link2sd that's all. With link2sd Google Maps is on SD, maybe it's background service doesn't like it, apart from it there's nothing wrong I could've done.
CPU settings: clocks at stock, governor is SAv2.
About 1 crash / day. Newer crashes seemed unrelated to wifi signal drop.

You can use linke2sd on AOKP(http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1968537) it works for me.
And stop complaning in every thread. The developers are making their work for fun and most important for FREE.

I am trying to flash my Inc with a new ROM for the first time, but it seems like more than half the ROMs on this page are either removed by the developer or cant be downloaded because the download links are dead.
Any tips on what to try first, based on what available still? The only thing I am concerned with is that the ROM is stable and compatible with as many of the stock functions as possible, stuff like broken radios is not what I am looking for right now. Would be kinda cool to try one as different from stock as possible. Does CM7 work well on the Inc? I keep seeing people talking about stuff that is broken with it.

Ice Cream Sandwich. Abduction by Hanger84 is smoother than the Sense ROMs.
Sent from my Incredible using XDA
Abduction is good to try if you want to experice ice cream.... but prepare for some bugs and missing features ( ie Camcorder, camera, & flash on websites and netflix) I suggest one of the gingerbread Roms or Froyo Roms. CM 7 or 8 should be fine, but you loose some of the things you may be accustomed to in Sense (Widgets). But there are pretty good apps that can do what sense does, you just have to look for them.
I'm using CM 7.2 RC1 (RC2 crashes right away for me) with latest ICS Incredikernal and SmartassV2 governor, fully over-clocked. Never crashes, everything works but, of course, 720p recording. I even found decent settings for auto-brightness (Make about 16 levels, start out at ~70, go up in ~5 point increments, then increase. Set Window Length to 5 secs). I have tried three ICS roms but always went back.
I'm using the new Go Launcher but it has a couple of bugs. Clear its data to get the large icons if you are stuck on small. To change settings on the large weather clock you have to do it via the small weather clock.
I use CyanogenMod 7.2. Along with Chad/Tiny's Incredikernel, Jermaine/Tiny's EXT4All mod, and Launcher Pro. Speedy and battery efficient. The latest RC should be fine, I'm on one of the nightlies and have been using Pons' KANGs when his computer was still working.
In addition to Sonny Sekhon's Ice Cream Sandwich CM7 Theme.
If you like the stock ROM, and want something stable and based off of it, Liberation 3.0 is a good choice. It is basically a rooted, debloated, stock ROM. I keep a copy on my SD card incase I need access to EPST or just feel like using Sense.
ICS is getting there, but the laggy animations and general speed have kept me away. It seems to me that the current hardware acceleration isn't 100% implemented. But I have never used ICS outside of the Incredible. So I don't have room to compare.
I'm with the majority here. CM 7.2 RC2 is great. I actually have stock kernel though, I am not sure if performance is better with incredikernel but I can tell you that CM7 is TONS better than stock in terms of battery life, customization, and overall android experience. I like sense but on the Inc, it's like they stopped trying...
P.S. - I also use GO Launcher EX with kovdev's ICS theme.
Well I just switched from Abduction to CM9 and so far CM9 is much better!!

See if Youtube works. Didn't for me. I ended up using the Go Launcher anyway so the experience was the same for me. There weren't as many stock apps like Car Home and the music widget is not the big one. Things like Phone and Calculator open slowly. Never did crash tho or even lag.
Hi, I am new to XDA and was looking for some links to the cm9 rom for DINC. I am currently running aokp_inc_build-25 and its nice but I have had some issues with it specifically with the camera not working properly.
Thank you in advance for the assistance.

I use a app called play on for YouTube Netflix and a lot of other video sites.. yea the camera fix seems to break playback on YouTube.. but I'm optimistic that those issues will be worked out since cm9 is still in development. What I love is that every feature u find in other Asop roms u can get apps that do that... so u can customize it better for your own personal taste and still have better stability!!!!!

Ok before I started getting replies here I dl'd Touch of Blue and Stock+, tried ToB for the week and it was ok but started to crash and lag a lot. The latter may have been due to my SetCPU settings, I dunno, but it was getting hung up on simple apps, and I did not like a couple things about it, like getting calls when the screen is off required you to unlock it, then unlock it again at the receiving call screen. Also didnt like the battery meter.
Just installed Stock+ and immediately realized it wouldn't work at all when I saw that the App Data partition was still at 150MB. Thats the whole reason I rooted, so there is no way I am using a ROM that is eventually gonna give me the Low space messages again.
GOnna try the ones you guys suggested now
I like Wildstangs stock ROM, and gtiny's kernel. I used root app delete to debloat it. And run the on demand deadline settings and can go 11 hours on a full charge with heavy use.
I also like the last stable release of CM7.1.0 it is smoking fast and way less issues then the nightlies or kangs to me.

CM7.2 couldn't figure out how to add my Google account. Also couldnt disable the camera shutter sound.
Tried Liberation but the App Data partition is still only 150MB; as soon as I restore my apps its gonna be out of space again.
ALL ROMs for the Incredible are going to have a 150 MB data/data partition. It's the way HTC made it. The only way around it is with the EXT4All mod. More information here. The file you're looking for to remove the limit is "Convert2Ext4_no_data_limit_normal_dalvik.zip".
And there is an options in the CM7 sound settings to disable the shutter sound. Called "Mute camera shutter".
Ok I found the camera sound setting, thanks. Any advice on getting the Google account to work? The Account settings were trying to setup an email thing, not my Google account
EDIT:
Figured out that I need to flash the Google apps pack on CM7 to get that all to work, but ClockworkMod kept failing to mount the pack when I tried to install it. Now I am back on Liberation, because at least here I have my Google account with contacts, but I cannot get the EXT4 fix to work. I download it, open it with Clockwork, tell it to reboot and apply, but it fails to mount it, just like the Google apps pack problem. Using Clockwork 5.0.2.0
First – I know this forum is not the right place for this post but as a new member I am not allowed to post in T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II Android Development
Appreciate it if anyone could help or offer links….
Background – Recently rooted my T989 for six reasons:
1. Remove (or freeze) T-Mobile and Samsung bloatware with Titanium
2. Ability to create complete a backup of the phone with ROM Manager and quality backups of each individual app with Titanium
3. Save power effectively/efficiently with Juice Defender
4. OC the CPU (I now know rooting the native phone ROM is not sufficient to OC CPU)
5. Finally I was pissed the Samsung (Kies)/T-Mobile upgrade from gingerbread to ICS (4.0.3) basically did NOTHING to improve my user experience/enjoyment of the phone.
6. Change USB packet size with SD Speed (After many benchmarks and actual UBS transfers to/from a desktop it is clear changing USB packet size for groups of files larger than 1MB is basically useless on my phone/SD card)
Use Profile - At least weekly… I use the phone to:
1. watch various codec files and streaming online video (via HDMI) – App MX Player and Dolphin
2. email (various email providers) – App Mail Droid
3. play mp3s (through phone speaker or Bluetooth) – App Poweramp
4. play games (on and off line) – App various
5. social networking – App Facebook and others
6. use mapping programs in conjunction with GPS – App Google Maps and Sygic
7. monitor/check car performance/sensors with OBD II software connected via Bluetooth – App Torque and others
8. take and modify pictures/video – App native Camera and others
9. Web surf – App Dolphin
10. reference phone sensors (tilt, acceleration, magnetic) – App various
11. reference offline technical material like ElectroDroid, handyCalc, and Universal Converter
12. move large files (like a thumb drive) with USB between Windows computers (The only physical mod I have done to the phone is addition of a 64GB SD Card)
13. provide an alarm clock – App native Clock
14. Finally and most important Creation/Modification of MS Office files (via HDMI with Bluetooth mouse and keyboard connected) – App Kingsoft Office and OfficeSuite Pro
Questions –
1. Is there any way to OC the CPU without installing a new ROM? (not interested in underclocking or CPU sleeping apps)
2. Can I just install a new kernel to OC the CPU? (It looks like “yes” when I read the Kernels section links of “[REF] Your One-Stop-Shop for rooting, roms, kernels and themes![UPDATED!][7/31]”. BUT I’m no UNIX / Linux expert and don’t want to screw the phone up)
3. Will installing ROM DARKSIDE.EVOLUTION.3 provide me with any significant user benefits over my base rooted Samsung ROM? If yes, can you provide a link to benefits? Will I loose capabilities?
4. Other performance modification suggestions would be appreciated.
Tks in advance
To start this definitely would be where you post this, either here or q&a section. This would not be OK to post in the development section as it is purely for development.
Now to address your question, there are a few ROMs out there (including my own)that def do enhance performance and allow overclocking. The most important thing to remember is to Read Read Read before doing anything to make sure everything is done right. And Google has many answers and YouTube has many flashing tutorials, just a tip happy flashing
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda app-developers app
Yes you could just flash a new kernel and oc. I'd recommend tdj's dark side. Then again, why don't you just flash a rom? I mean you already rooted your phone (which to me is the most unnerving part). Just make you sure you have the correct version of cwm and wipe cache (or using tdj's super wipe/cache wipe) as needed per kernel/rom/radio(yes, you might to flash a new radio) and you'd be good to go.
I was on dark side rom with the kernel for a while and it seems like it has better battery life over cm9 rc2 which is what's on my phone right now. And since the dark side was based on the official release it is pretty much bug free.

I agree with ptmr3, research and ask questions. Thats exactly what i did before i did anything to my phone. Yes it maybe a scary process thinking about flashing and the possibility of flashing the wrong zip and bricking. But as long as you research, you'll be ok.
They pretty much answered your questions, but feel free to PM me if you have any questions. I got a pretty good knowledge on most things here and i like to help other members out when possible.
Thanks
God I was meaning to make this type of thread but I got lazy I wanted to heavily discuss Darkside Rom. I have flashed it about 3 times. Once with the latest version and 2 with the previous. I really liked it. ICS is amazing and the Kernel gave me a bit more battery than usual (20 hours moderate use)
When I first flashed darkside it was a bit laggy even after wiping cache, data, davlik cache 3 times before running darkside then running the rom that has darkside included... It would crash very often when I had poweramp open. When it played the music would cut off terribly into static with actions such as pulling down the drawer or opening folders/menu. Twitter would crash as well and gmail would be laggy and sometimes give me a bit of a green screen I know I am being a bit picky, but still that bugs me.. Everything else was awesome though.
Things improved with the latest version, but after a while the power amp bugs persisted as well as the slight crashes with twitter and gmail (even though I performed fresh installs of all these apps) Jeez it was so good I ignored the few and rare times it got buggy. But then I noticed that after a while when my battery hit low the time would change the phone would state a totally different time. Like 2 pm. It wouldn't improve until I charged it to 100% and reboot....
It makes me sad I really wanted to stay with ICS...
I am going to try CM 9 but I really liked darkside. Might also try AOKP as well... I never bothered fixing permissions with TDJ's darkside cache wipe Do you believe that would help? I never had rebooting issues and I never really flashed anything on my phone but Darkside.... I did flash a CM nightly inbetween the previous and newer version of Darkside.
Anyone can recommend me any help? I am back to gingerbread it runs smoothly but ICS is just amazing... :\
Also please recommend me some kernels for either gingerbread stock or an ICS rom so I can have better performance and battery life.
I know I wrote a lot but thank you so much guys.

Hey did you use any tools to restore like Titanium Backup whenever you put the new or updated versions of the roms on your phone?
Hi guys,
I have question regarding my HTC Desire Z .. Ever since I rooted the phone about 1.5 years ago, and have been trying out the newer ROMs, I've slowly realized that my phone is getting slower, slower, and slower .. I'm currently using a Jellybean ROM, and its *extremely* slow ! I mean, at times I receive a call, and the ringer rings about 5-6 times, and during all this time, the phone doesn't have the juice to switch to the phone app, so that I can 'accept' the call ! Ultimately the call disconnects itself!
A friend recently suggested to me that maybe the newer ROMs are two powerful for my phone, and that I need to move to an older Android version ROM, which my Desire Z CAN handle, without this much lag !
Also, I hardly have any apps installed on my phone at all, in an attempt to keep the load low .. I also use 'Advance Task Killer' regularly to kill background apps, but it doesn't really improve anything ..
What can I do to improve the speed of my phone !? I really pisses me off to see a 10-15 second lag when I call someone !
Get rid of the task killer first of all...

I dont think it will make any difference .. I've tried many different ROMs, and its always the same condition with all ... Sometimes my phone become *so* unresponsive that I just feel like smashing it on the ground ! (When I really get upset!)
Also, on another note, when I open Advanced Task Killer, it shows me the amount of free RAM on the top .. Most of the times this value is between 60 MB ~ 100 MB, and sometimes between 100 MB ~ 140 MB .. If never seen this value go above 135 MB or so ... And Desire Z is supposed to have 512 MB of RAM
just full wipe and reflash the rom

If I do that, it will initially be fast .. Even if I install all my apps on the first day, it will still be okay in terms of speed ... But give it a week, it eventually becomes slow .. very slow! .. And the odd thing is, during this week, I don't necessary install/uninstall anything .. the phone just ****s itself in somehow ... And then from then on, it remains slow, no matter what ...
I open Google Maps, takes like 15 seconds to open .. takes another 60 seconds to go to Google Navigation, and then further lags after that ..
Basically there's a lag in *everything* !
Is there a way I can see what is slowing down the phone ?!
Also, is it true or not whether an older phone, such as Desire Z, can or cannot handle a relatively newer Android version ROM ? Maybe this is why the latest Android versions are NOT officially available for phones many times, because the manufacturer knows the device cannot handle that newer Android version ?
If your rom supports ext partitions, make sure all of yours are formatted that way. Chances are you have sopme bad apps, a logcat may hedlp determin abused wake locks or memory leaks. Also you can try downloading battery batt stats or watchdog for more infor

i had a play with elitemod ics the other day & it was defiantly slower than the GB version... it was using more or less double the ram which i suspect is the real problem.....
Yes its true the newer versions are more hungry. We touched on it in one of the andromadus threads recently. I believe the issue to be the cpu. The nexus s has the same amount of ram as us and although its not as good on there as the gnex, its still good. Having bumped my lower cpu limit a notch, its much better. I also tried a few upper limits and found that 1200 to be best as it suffers with animation under that.
But then all dz's are different. Stay on your rom and bump up the lower limits a few clicks and let us know what you think.

I've noticed the slowdowns happening with negligible CPU load and no memory constraints. I suspect a problem with the kernel. At the times it happens, the phone seems to be just doing *nothing*.

Also, I'm probably going to be re-flashing another ROM soon, so please suggest me a ROM ... I'm looking for maximum longterm stability and responsiveness here, so even if a ROM isn't the newest or the most feature-filled, I can still try it out ..
And what is Superwipe (read it in another thread) ?
Normally, when I restore stuff after installing a ROM, I download a fresh copy of the app from the Store, and only restore the app's data using titanium .. is this okay ?
For the sake of starting fresh, flash the ext 4 recovery and flash mimicry as your rom. Read all suggestions in the first few post on mimicry, to flash 4ext I made a thread, you'll find it the first page or so in the general section (dzhboot or something)
Mimicry is one of the best made best performing full featured ics roms for our phones, partitioning everything to 4ext (easily done through recovery) will make it far better. Other bonus tweaks will be added in.
There (in my opinion) are beter performing gingerbread roms, but I do sugest mimicry as it is amazing and the dev has laid out a wealth of knowledge in the first few posts

I'm assuming you're referring to this thread: http://www.forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1714187
Well this is the ROM I'm currently using, which I flashed about 2 months ago, which is giving me all these performance issues ..
I went through the first few pages, but I didn't find any instructions on 4EXT ... The only thing I found was in the OP's FAQ in the start, which said that you should apply ext by downloading 4ext from Play Store, if you get lags ..
Anywhere else I can look ?
Look in general section, somewhere in the first page I posted a thread called dzhboot on g2 or something to that extent, one of the first few posts I eplain how to flash 4ext recovery.
One of the fastest roms I have used is elitemod cm7, maybe try that

I have been wondering the same as the OP. I have been using andromadus and andromadus mimicry roms for the past few month. I tired cm9 unofficial but it was no different to mimicry in terms of lag. Currently on flinny's jb beta http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2005136. Lag is not terrible but too often I am looking at a white screen waiting for something to happen.
I often experience lags opening apps like phone and browser (any browser). Phone hanging when trying to make a call is particularly annoying because my wife asks "why is your phone so ****?"
I would love to have a really smooth experience like others report but even with a fresh wipe I seem to have trouble. When I try to reduce the process limit i still seem to have too many processes running. What should i look for in logcat in terms of tracking down the problem?
Maybe 4ext will sort it out? I am very loathe to go back to a cm7 rom.
Ext4 worked really well for me to speed up my phone.. I highly recommend it.

It's gotta be a certain app your installing thats hogging all your memory, I been running mimicry ever since blk released it n have had very few slowdowns.
Never had a problem receiving/making calls 'wiping' is not the same as 'superwiping' its different then just the name, I suggest you do some reading up before flashing any more roms.

i superwipe, and i've been flashing roms since the g1. I am not seeing any particular process hogging resources. this current jb beta is pretty good but still get some lagging at random.
if that were the case I would love to try and find out what it is.
it seems to me that a minority of users report lags in rom threads and are dismissed without ever really getting to the root of the problem.
I would really like to try and get to the bottom of it. I am going to move to ext4 but if there are other troubleshooting steps to take I am all ears.
Ext4 alone will make a huge difference, and most of the rest of the slow downs will be do to apps/running services which can be seen with a logcat what is continually trying to use cpu resources
If only a minority report slowdowns then either that minority has a different idea of how the phone should run/ they use the phone in a completley different way/ or have different settings and apps then most have.

Introduction.
In P350, we have little RAM, and everybody knows that. I'm constructing this thread to try maximize the performance on ICS.
The First Tip -> Gapps.
As we all know, in each version of Android, Gapps size is increased. In Froyo, Gapps like Google Maps and others really slowed the phone to the point of hacking it to improve performance. In Gingerbread, in most of ROM's, it wasn't a BIG problem. But in Ice Cream Sandwich and Jelly Bean, Gapps are landing direct hits on performance overall, because of 3 reasons:
It's size is now very BIG;
It has some unknown background apps that eats RAM;
Now the Gapps are consuming memory, CPU and GPU.
As a effect, some Devs and p350 users are searching a way to improve performance. But some problems occur in the way, like low memory RAM, discussions on thread and some others. So I'm giving the first TIP.
DO NOT USE FLASH GAPPS.
You are now asking yourself : "What the Hell are you saying Dark?"
I answer, it's very simple. Most of the Android Users (Yes, not only P350) do not use half of the installed apks. Saying by other words, Android users flash and don't use 50% or more of Gapps, so unknown apps are installed and are kept in phone. And most of the users only flash Gapps because they want them installed for nothing, without knowing what these apps are doing in background. To finish, a big part of New Android users only use Google Play. So, how we clear this?
DOWNLOAD THE DESIRED GAPPS FROM GOOGLE PLAY.
If you use some Gapps to work or any other reason, like Google Mail and Youtube, you might consider downloading then instead of flashing. But now you are asking yourself: "What is the difference?". I answer why downloading is better thant flashing them:
A great part of ROM's (if not all), do not need Gapps to work, so you can only download Google Play, setting your account on phone and start hunting the apps you use;
Because of this, you has an Greater control of deciding what app you need and want to install;
Unknown apps will not be installed on your phone;
No background apps active -> More RAM -> Better performance!
Now you have a better performance than before.
The Second Tip -> Uninstall what you don't use.
Yes, in every version of ICS the most worry of users is : "RAM is good on this ROM?", because little RAM, poor performance. In some versions, like ConnectMod betas, the RAM is very poor, according to dodo1255 . How to solve this problem?
UNINSTALL SYSTEM APPS.
Some ROM's come with unnecessary apps, and they consume your memory, both internal and RAM. To Advanced users:
Extract ROM, go to system/apps and delete manually the undesired apps.
To basic users, do this:
Download Root Uninstaller or Root Uninstaller Pro;
Open it and Search some apps that you don't use and uninstall them.
Attention: Before making anything make a Backup first! And, do not try this if you are New on Android world. If you want to do this, first search on net about this and what apps you can uninstall.
I'm not responsible for bricked devices, suicide, getting fired at your work because alarm app failed, or your mama kamikazing herself instead of jumping parachute because you didn't call her and tell what airplane to catch on airport. You decided of making these modifications. If you point your finger at me, I'll laugh of you.

Some people just do this and get an improved performance, but if you want to go further.
The Third Tip -> Overclock and Swap.
Yep, it's a basic tip this one. But be aware of the limit of the overclocking in the respective kernel, and what's the most stable frequency on that ROM. And if you're planning Swap your ROM, do not use apps like Swapper, they do not help because they runs in background. Search and you'll find good tips on how to do it.
The Fourth Tip -> Download some optimizer apps.
Yes, i'm recomending because of other things that they can do. But do not install:
Apps that kills other apps, like task managers. They do not improve performance and really increase the number of Force Closes on your phone;
Apps that creates a big amount of cache;
You can install apps like:
Auto Memory Manager and RAM Manager Pro - Can help on improving performance;
AnTuTu CPU Master Pro - With some settings it helps on performance and battery;
Zdbox or other that cleans cache - Cleans your phone to a better level of performance.
The Fifth Tip -> Smoothing your phone in a easy manner.
This tip was suggested by gogyly.
This app, Seeder, was created by lambgx02 to reduce lags and to improve even better Any Rom. In the thread you can find more specifications.
I tested and works flawlessy, it's very good, a must-have app for us now.
Seeder
The Sixty Tip ->A GREAT Replacement for Google Play.
This tip is for those that only use Google Play when flash gapps. It's a custom market called 1Mobile Market. It's UI is like Google Play, feature the hottest apps for free (I found GTA Vice City to download here), you can log in with your google account and has a really amount of apps. I'm current using and is very good.
Link for download -> 1Mobile Market
Doubt of every ICS user ->Why my phone is having low battery fast?.
It's because of tweaks. Yeah, TWEAKS MAKE THE BATTERY LAST A FEW HOURS. I concluded this when i moved myself of ICS from my Genesis. They are almost equal on performance (with over my one reaches close , going to 2203 and ICS with stock freq. 2230). And, ironically, the two wastes battery even when i'm not using it. Result -> 1 day battery. Froyo, the more slow ROM, do not wastes battery when i'm not using it, even with overclock. Result -> 3+ day battery.
And 1 thing: Devs, do not put 2 or tweak packages on your ROM's, because some scripts was already used on other packages, making the system run 2 or more times the same script, wasting battery.
You can help on this list by suggesting some improvements that I do not listed here. If I help, press thanks.
So for Accounts syncing, Flash Gapps is not really needed? Only a account-related app, such as Gmail? Interesting... But how do I get Play Store without flashing Gapps?
dbarrera, account sync app come in some ICS roms. If not, you can download gapps and put this application on system/apps of the ROM. You can get Play Store apk file in XDA, or in others websites. If you cannot found, i have the .apk file so i can upload for you =D.
For instance, I'm testing JellyME ROM... It has Account & Sync app, but even with Gmail and Play Store (3.7.11 from a June dump, I dunno if its the latest) app installed, I can't add my Google account for it to sync Contact and Calendar data... Ideas?
Yes. Go to Settings -> Account & Sync -> Add Account, and do the step guide. First check your internet connection because it will be loggin to verify and associate your account to that phone and you're done. After all tap your account to find the options to Sync Contacts and Calendar. Hope i helped you. =D
Or use blackmart.

Hi. I think u should try this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=33999592
I've used this app on kamesh ICS, and it helps reduce lag. I didn'nt test it much on ICS (rolled back to MIUI), but on MIUI GB, realy reduces lag on minimum. I'm curently on powersaving governor and all is still buttery smooth. Check out and give your opinion. Cheers!!!

Okay I'll try using it on my new ROM and soon i'll post results =D
Had to flash Gapps (tiny-gapps) for Google related data (Contacts and Calendar) sync...
I just hope that these tiny-gapps does not come with unnecessary apps. But you can do this step: Extract gapps and extract rom. Put the desired apps on system/apps of the ROM and make a .zip file with contents. That should do the trick next time =D
Just the APKs? In the tiny-gapps also comes some libs and stuff... Probably dependencies?
Maybe ... But here in my phone it wasn't a problem. Maybe these libs modifies system and allow unknown apps or other things to run in background.
Being that the case, GoogleBackupTransport (I guess this one keeps data backed up with Google), Google[Calendar | Contacts]SyncAdapter (I guess the name says it all), GoogleLoginService (Need to login into Mothership somehow), MarketUpdater, Phonesky (Play Store), Talk (Yes, I'm guilty of using it) should be the only ones to load directly into the ROM's /system/app folder?
Yes, theorically talking. But soon some ROM's will implant the useful Gapps, so we will not have to do this work =D
If the JellyMe developer includes Google Login without Gapps (and fixes the bugs already posted on his thread), I'm sold!
And how about any tips for battery life? I've tried some ICS ROMs, they were quite smooth, all good but I didn't like the battery life, that's why I'm still using CM7. Anybody running ICS can post some battery stats? On CM7, it takes 3%/8 hours with airplane mode, but with ICS 40%!! Did I do something wrong(I mean bad kernel or flashing gapps) or is it normal with ICS? Thanks
ICS is a really battery eater because more apps are running in background. And it goes fast. You can download different battery savers and check what's the best for you.
Well that's shame, because I'd really like to use ICS(CM9),it has some good functions(killing with back button, smoother and faster than CM7). The weirdest thing is it drains the battery even in deep sleep?!

Don't use ICS if you cannot adapt to its functionality. Yes it has bugs, and yes, you'll be in trouble if you dont know how to make remedies.

I don't want to be rude, because I know that there's a lot of hard, long and sometimes annoying work. I'm happy I can even flash ICS. I've just asked if there's any way to improve battery life (especially when phone is not used). I don't think that low battery life is a "functionality" which I should adapt to.
hi, just wondering if there are any roms available that are completely stable and finished for this phone?
if not, (as i have not found any), is the original stock rom (rojers) available to download anymore?
thanks guys..

After reading a lot, I believe I can confirm that only GB, and stock ICS are stable, as with no issues, some little glitches but no deal breakers. As for Rogers, there's only Osimod GB ROM based of Rogers. The rest are based of UCLJ3

I may be off base here but I guess the [4.4] cyanogenmod 11 and omni ROM are pretty much stable ...
Though the pretty much is still a while away from complete the following are the general bugs with bubor's amazing Roms:
There is an audio bug when making VoIP calls which gives audio latency ..
There is fixed camera rotation which means all the pictures are in landscape
There is no Wi-Fi direct
Google experience launcher is not that Good looking (I know I am complaining)
Google maps 7 has issues but can be dual loaded with maps 6 so they work
Backlight,PPI, lag all have fixes though
Battery drain is a bit more
But as far as performance goes... They are pretty smooth..
So I guess make your choice

i wish i could agree with you.. im running kitkat crdroid, and like every rom i have flashed over the years, has plenty of bugs that make it very annoying as a daily rom. phone switching off twice a day, icons/widgets dissapearing after rebooting, becomes laggy after a week or so of usig the rom, laggy browsing on all browsers, trebucket crashing regurly etc etc, thats on top of the bugs you list.. the only roms that are stable are completely finished official cm or miui roms (which there are none for this fone..). the stock rom is the only one that has not given me trouble. with the greatest respect to those that put their time i to make these roms, im sure people who flash them make them out to be more stable than they really are unfortunatelly.
Maybe we have developer aura or something like that? I'm sure I just used 4.4 PAC ROM for a week without reboot or any crashes. Bluetooth, fixed camera rotation and VoIP - yes, these are issues we can't fix, the same is with google maps v.7 (we just have no hardware NEON support that uses v.7 of maps). There is also issue with wi-fi: if you turn it off, it sometimes don't turns on until reboot. As for myself, I just never turn it off.
Besides of these issues, everything is smooth and stable. Really is. But I got sometimes trebuchet crashes - this was a time when I flashed dirty and didn't make a factory reset - the new trebuchet version sometimes conflicts with the data from old version. I just went to Settings - Apps, found Trebuchet (or Launcher3 if old version) and tapped Erase Data. And the issue was gone! But I recommend to always make a factory reset with new ROM. That's really important.
And even if you have those constant trebuchet bugs whatever you do (icons disappearing is also a trebuchet bug, I never encountered it though), just install a different launcher. Google now launcher is the basic, and is like trebuchet in many ways, miui one is also good, and others, they are many!
I had problems with some icons disappearing when the system reboots. I found that the icons that disappeared were for applications which were installed on the SD card. When I moved them to the system, they stopped disappearing.

like i said in my first post, i do really appriciate the fact that people spend Alot of time cooking theese roms, and it easy for me to come along and moan about them, but i have found over the years that after using a custom rom for a couple of weeks or so, its like the ram seems to gradually get eaten away, the device gradually slows down, becomes laggy and ultimately unuseable (not just this fone, and not just me that says this). im not saying all are like this, just many i have used, mainly because they never get finished.
i am very open though to people suggesting that i am doing something wrong, and maybe you have picked up on that something.. you say you do a factory reset, can i ask, do you mean a factory reset in the fone settings, or are you referring to a full wipe using cwm/twrp? as when i flash, i wipe everything accept what i dont want wiped on the external sd.. i dont factory reset, is this after you have flashed the new rom? or before you flash a new rom?
also thank you for the erase data tip for trebucket, i will try that.. i have not used the google now launcher yet, but i tried using miui launcher but when i went back to trebucket the lockscreen stayed as the miui lockscreen, which has happened on past cm roms, so i just deleted it.
just gets a bit frustrating when you spend hours getting everything working/setting up personalisation, then the phone just seems to start getting worse day by day, but maybe like you say, its cos i "dirty flashed"?

i did think that, and im sure you are right, but i have had every app/folder/widget dissappear twice now, then, randomly over several restarts, some widgets/apps will replace themselves over the top of the new ones i have just newly placed there.. strange, but i have came across this before on cm roms, so im sure there is a bug there somewhere, even if it is not too common..

Yes, what you do should suffice. I meant cwm/twrp wipe (boot, system, data, cache, android.secure). SD card is not touched. So you are doing fine with that, but anyway, there has to be something make those issues... Can you look at /system/addon.d folder? There is stored info about files that will be preserved even if you install a new ROM with a wipe. If there are many leftovers from ROMs or programs you tried earlier, then you should try to manually clear this folder before new ROM install.

That was the point with pre-4.2 ROMs, and even with 4.2 there was a bug with gallery thumbnails which made it to eat gigabyte and more of storage after some time. That was fixed in CM 10.1.3. Also a Lite-Kernel used by earlier ROMs is very great, but has its issues, for example, systemui crashes when camera launch after some phone use and sleep of death.
I used CM 10.1.3 for a a three months and still keeping a backup of it for a some case. There was no slowing or lagging, it was almost perfect (if you don't use VoIP or BT handset) even after those months of use. Strangely, but I didn't have even "settings -> about crash" issue bubor listed!
Welll here are some tip which have helped me

i .. umm.. well i agree that as of now they have issues but they will get better .. ours is an old device... so i guess we should tread slowly . which is exactly what the developers are doing .. .
and i agree on the ram hungry part but there are ways for that too . .
funny i have been messaging people to help me post this stuff through them . . but well thats the prob with being a junior member .
My personal tested suggestions for omni rom which have really incremented to the performace some of which are :
- using one of the lightest launchers as i find trebuchet and even google launcher RAM hungry is 'Lightning Launcher' the bloody app itself is in BYTES!!
-also i use link2sd with ext4 that helps in storage and also use sd maid for regular clean up.
-also i have been testing memory swapping using linux swap partition on sd card (class 10 ) and yeah i know it degrades sd card but oh well like Glados testing testing testing
-i have also switch off startup at boot for certain apps
and i apologize for posting what maybe well known tricks or improvs but i really dont know where else to post these (still have the ten post ban from posting )
and if these dont help then sorry to waste your time . .
PS anyone think an F2FS file system like for the nexus7 would\might help ?
tl;dr use the given tips maybe they might help . . and with custom roms i guess you have to spend time to keep them running well .

ok thanks, i cleared the data in trebucket, and started again with placing apps/widgets on home screen, and i also have deleted the hacked version of adobe flash that you install with dolphin browser, and, supprisingly after a couple of days of testing, my apps/widgets are not deleting themselves, the phone is significantly less laggy, and i have had no switch offs, so, im very pleased with that! so id suggest against downloading that version of flash player with this rom..

For what it's worth, I recently had to reflash and decided to use dman325's stock UCLJ3. (He has two versions, stock and one with the aosp lockscreen. If you decide to use either, use the stock one. dman325 had to resign the aosp one with a test signing key that, recently, got invalidated or declined and it prevents Google Play from updating past 3.7.15 and Google Play Services wont install at all because of a shared_uid fault due to certificate conflict, etc.)
I got frustrated with the amount of bloat in an otherwise vendor fun-packed rom, so I went in and hacked out lots of crap. Largely relying on either "what is safe to get rid of" lists for similar samsung phones and my own poking around/guestimation using dex2jar and jd-gui. I really, honestly don't understand what InputEventApp.apk was meant to do. Seriously. But, getting rid of it reduced the logcat spam tremendously. Also, the wsslcm* apks are somewhat frightening in appearance.
I've gone a few steps further, I modified android.policy.jar smali to prevent the emergency dial option from showing up on the lock screen - I accidentally pocket dialed 911 a year ago and am not about to do that again. I also modified the kernel ramdisk image to set ro.debuggable=1 and ro.secure=0. I tried, while I was at it, to replace /dev/random with /dev/urandom, but I'll have to do some experimenting.
I've added a few static binaries for proper gnu utilities. bash, ls, grep, sort, du, etc. It surprises me that a functional shell environment doesn't get more attention on phones with keyboards.
So, that's my $0.02. Try the stock UCLJ3 and fiddle with it a bit. Good luck.

Well, you learn by doing, I believe. Also, I have a classy - for a flip phone - Motorola Razr2 v8 kicking around I can always put my SIM into if I've managed to hose my captivate glide. Also, I'm replying because I can't post in the rom development forum until I have 10 posts. Hurray for well founded, but nonetheless arbitrary restrictions. So, a number of things have piqued my curiosity.
So, first of all, this surprised me in the logs:
Code:
I/Launcher( 2263): onCreate(): product model family:U1 product model : GT-I9221
I'd always wondered why I had an SGH-I927 when other phones, like the remarkably similar Galaxy R, are GT-I9103. Is/was GT-I9221 an internal reference?
Also, there are other inconsistencies, for example:
Code:
D/RILJ ( 426): [1718]> REQUEST_GET_NEIGHBORING_CELL_IDS
D/RILJ ( 426): [1718]< REQUEST_GET_NEIGHBORING_CELL_IDS error: com.android.internal.telephony.CommandException: REQUEST_NOT_SUPPORTED
If you jump into the debug/field test menu system, (dial *#*#197328640#*#* ) you can bring up the list of neighboring cells in both GSM and WCDMA modes... So, why is the request marked not supported? Furthermore, why didn't samsung disable the request in the first place if they went to the trouble of disabling it from working. I imagine this has a reason, but I doubt it's a terribly great one.
And the FM receiver? I do believe our broadcom BCM4329 is a bluetooth+wifi_in_an_sdcard (well, SDIO really, but still, not pci-e and not usb.) and has an FM receiver built in, but it's omitted and hidden?
Code:
W/AudioPolicyManager( 112): FM radio recording off
Oh, the conspiracy theories. And then there's the weird lines you discover if you dump the string identifiers from /system/bin/drexe!
For example, these lines are all sequential:
Code:
broadcast -a android.provider.Telephony.SECRET_CODE android_secret_code://767*3855
InvokeOemRequestHookRaw broadcast factorst OK
InvokeOemRequestHookRaw factorst fail %d
/system/.configure.txt
(what's with /system/.configure.txt???)
Do not type 767*3855 into your phone. It's the factory wipe code or possibly part of it. I do believe drexe is the DataRouter you often see spamming the logs with:
Code:
E/DataRouter( 107): usb connection is true
E/DataRouter( 107): DSR is ON. Don't send DTR ON.
And we find these strings in drexe:
Code:
__initialize_usb_ipc
/data/.usb_stream
usb connection is true
InvokeOemRequestHookRaw usbstatus true is success
oh, and:
Code:
pipe failed (%s)
fork failed (%s)
child pid = %d.
execute sh.
system/bin/sh
execl fail %d
What do you think? Why does drexe seem to have code to support and start a shell? Well, if nothing else, thank you for reading.
P.S. I don't suspect anything the least bit conspiracy like, malicious, or devious. I've worked for some huge companies; i don't think it'd be likely.

Technically, you can post in cappy dev forums started from 3 posts. I saw someone posting there his fourth post.
As for other things you listed... Well, I'll be glad to have an FM receiver in our glide. But I really think that reason for all this staff can be as simply as hands growing from wrong place or restricted development time...

I recently, after some research, also installed dans stock (i decided to go complete stock since i didnt know what the lock screen thing meant).
I havent had any trouble with being outdated. Only thing i noticed (unless im doing it wrong, im new to this phone) was that screencaps dont work. its power button and volume down, right?
Other things id like to customize are data being in the top drawer instead of bluetooth (since i never use it), and id like to be able to see who texted me on the lock screen, but while still using the stock messaging app, and without an app having to constantly run.
Other than those couple of things its been great!
im HOPING down the road for an un-buggy or at least minimally buggy version of 4.4. well see what happens with that i guess.
Some help

well i always say stock is best cause it IS optimized however there are things like keep and total Google integration that i like so i updated to kit kat
for screen caps if they dont work i could maybe suggest an application called super manager its pretty loaded it has screen cap and may even give you prox sense wake up for device.
also customizing the drawer hmm.. i guess you could try xposed framework but please be careful and make a backup before
as for who texts you and the content of the text you could try dash clock its able to do a lot
hello guys I was just wondering if I could get some help since I returned back to fully Ice Cream Sandwich Stock. I completely removed all the system bloat with link2sd, uninstalled all att crap. Can anyone recommend me something since I feel the ram consuption still to high... battery so far is doing kind of good almost as in crdroid
But i believe it can be improved. Any recommended settings or something else i can do? Already tried lite kernel but it gave me some issues. Rather keep stock. Any recommendations please guys. Also if you know a "ok google" like app or something as a swifty assistant would be nice. Please recommend. Thanks in advance

Hi,
well that depends.. on what you mean with "finished"
I have tested all (3 months ago) available ROMs for the Glide. IMO the best available ROM is PACman but as said it depends. I used pac_i927-milestone.1.RC1.4.zip for a long time (months) without having any issues besides Bluetooth Headset which is a general problem in JB and higher version). I have tried other PACMan ROM versions as well but the above one was the best of stability and battery life (in my case).
So it depends what features you really need or are a must-have for you. If you do not have bluetooth headsets I would recommend the above otherwise .. well I would recommend sediROM

Haven't done that before but would be rooted ICS stock also ok for you?
If so:
--> search for thread ID 1994902 or search for: [ROM] Stock UCLJ3 Rooted, Deodexed, Zipaligned
(sorry not allowed to post links..)
