[Q] Whatsapp notifications - HTC One X

Hi all
How are you guys manage to get whatsapp notification almost instantly when the screen is off ? I have no 3G (data plan) and the "always" option on WIFI shoould be a solution but it will drain battery. i f you chose "never" or "pluged in", then you wont receive notification until you unlock the screen.
if i put syncronization ON, on the device settings, will i get the whatsapp notification, since it will have to conect to wifi?

You have to have a consistant internet connection, otherwise the phone can't recieve the message!

damn... even my old iphone 3g had a Wifi conection that would conect itself on intervals and not all the time so the battery wouldnt drain.
ty anyway

No problem
Just have it connected all the time, for me Wi-Fi doesn't drain the battery much (if it's connected to my Wi-Fi)

You can try Juice Defender, there is option to switch data on custom intervals.

can't find the option to switch the data usage on custom intervals. Any special version of Jucie Defender?

Have you tried with WiFi on all the time? I've never turned it off (well, almost never), and my battery life seems as good as anybody else's.

Power Management

Hi,
I'm wondering some things to optimize my battery life, but couldn't find any answers so far:
1) When Wifi and APN both are ON, Wifi will get priority. But the APN-setting is actually still on. Will it drain the battery, or should I always turn APN off when Wifi has been connected?
2) I have set Ultimate Juice (or Juice Defender) to turn on APN every 10 minutes during 1 minute to check for updates. But when I turn off APN, Juice Defender can't turn APN on himself to check for updates. That means that I have to remain APN ON. Doesn't that drain the battery, or is Juice Defender turning APN off on his own way?
3) I noticed that when the screen is off in standby, Android will turn off Wifi and APN. People are saying you should turn off APN and Wifi when not in use, but since Android turns both off while screen is off/standby mode, what's the use of turning both off manually? I think you could even turn them on all the time since they will get turned off when the screen goes black.
4) e.g. You're in a situation without any internet access. Apps like the Friends Stream, or Mail want to check for updates every 5 minutes. the consequence is they can't update because there's no internet connection. Does that action always drain the battery some more?
wtf no one??
under the wi fi advanced settings.. you can set wifi to never sleep... this should mean that your not using the apn connection...
I think apps try to update and if they do not succeed, it will be cancelled. I doubt the apps will continously check for updates until they get a fix. Same with Weatherbug. I sometimes see Weatherbug last updated hours ago, even when I have had internet access for the past hour (I have set it to update every hour). That was when I had unchecked 'enable always on mobile data'.
There are options available for wifi under advanced menu to set it to always stay on, or shutdown after 15 mins of sleep.
There is also an option available to always have data connection on. This will keep data connection alive even if phone is set to sleep.
Do you mean "mobile data connection" everytime you call it "APN"?
There's WiFi and that; two ways to access the net which pull power. WiFi can be disabled quickly and easily through the widget. So can the mobile data network: http://yfrog.com/0ymobilewidgetp
Leaving it to 2G when you don't need 3G or when 3G reception is bad saves much power. I'll need to do more experimentation before I can answer your other qs with assurance.

Does WIFI use power if its not connected?

I See my wifi has used 30% of my battery but ive been on 3G all day, does it drain the battery searching for networks?
It does use some power when searching for networks. There is probably an APP or settings that you can change to set the Freq of checks maybe. Or you can just turn of the Wifi radio when you know your not going to use it.

Yes it uses a lot of power if its regularly searching for networks. Especially if you're moving around and seeing dozens of WiFi spots. Just turn off WiFi when not in use, simple as that.
A lot of custom ROMs have less aggressive Wifi seeking intervals. You can usually set it manually with ease too. Lots of apps out there if you don't want to do it manually.
All that was said is true, but still I find that 30% usage for Wifi just for searching nearby networks is a little too much...
Although I haven't got anything to compare with, I always turn wifi off if I'm not using it during long periods.
Regards
I turn wifi off when it is not needed and battery life goes from one to two days.

I've been using Tasker to turn wifi on at home/work and off when I'm elsewhere. It's using cell towers to determine location, so hopefully it won't impact the battery much.
I leave wifi on 24/7, today it has used 2% of the 60% battery i've used.
I travel through london so I assume it is constantly finding new wifi signals.

Y5 Battery Saver .. on the market, free. Turns on/off Wifi based on known networks and cells in the area of the AP.

I leave wifi on all the time as well, and I also only have used 2% of the 70-80% battery I used up already.
Try going into wifi settings, then advanced wifi settings, then turn off the new wifi network available notification option.
This increased my battery life slightly.

Y5 - Battery Saver helps out tremendously! I barely ever use more than 2% when home all day...although that may be a bug but I started a thread for that already.

That 30% displayed can be deceptive since it's based on the amount of battery discharged and not entire battery capacity.
Well wifi, when on is looking to connect to known networks. If the signal is weak it will disconnect and connect to another network near by if there is that has better signal. This process does use some battery. The biggest drain will occur when you are actively using wifi, that is when you download or upload. So the best way to save battery, is to close wifi when not needed. If however you want wifi you can set it to never sleep. This way even if the screen goes off wifi will be connected and your device wont use the 3G which is way more power hungry.

App idea 2g when screen off

Does any sort of app exist? I'm rooted and for battery saving purposes, would it not be a good idea to switch to 2g automatically when the screen is off for more than a minute? Then when the phone is woken up switch back to 3g?
I'm not talking about turning data off completely as this would stop whatsapp messages coming through.

Dont know if it helps but I just made this post a few hours ago.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1765911
Not sure if that's what you need though.
It uses mobile data though... For 2g and 3g I'll try to create a new app for that
But for now yeah that's what I have
Would Tasker not be able to do that?
(I've only used it a few times recently but sounds within its capabilities)

It is built using tasker.
I tried to use Tasker for this but not sure how to configure it. Anyone successfully configure please share the steps..

if you turn off the 3g while the screen is off, you wont receive any emails is this correct?
2g... Data is data. Psst, you can watch Youtube without 3g!

It's not that simple and probably not worthwhile. 2G and 3G on standby are pretty close in terms of power usage, the only time you usually find an advantage with 2G is where the 3G signal is weaker, so less power is used keeping in touch with the 2G tower. If you fix the phone to 2G, you also save some power if moving around as the phone is only talking/listening to 2G cells, and less likely to be swapping about. When you have "auto" selected and you are moving around the phone has to monitor both 2G and 3G cells to be ready to make a handover decision, so that is extra power.
If you have the phone constantly dropping 2G to go to 3G when you turn on the screen, then back again, that all takes extra power to negotiate with the cells. Also if you get a phone call and the phone switches to 3G, this will drop all connections when the setting is changed, as you can only have a smooth handover when the phone is in "auto" mode and has already established a handover strategy.
Then you need to factor in data usage. When any applications sync while your phone is in standby (screen off) if on 2G that sync is going to take longer, and the longer it takes the longer your phone has to stay awake to wait for it to happen, and the radio is on longer transmitting, so more power is used than there might have been on 3G.
The net effect of such a setting is likely to use more power overall.

Galaxy note 2 wifi setting

Wonderingnwhat you guys think about the "wifi during sleep" setting and which option to check as far as battery life is concerned. You can find multiple settings online some saying wifi off during sleep and some saying on during sleep. What yas think?

* Wifi during sleep option is given so that your phone doesn't connect to data,as 3G/4G data consumes more battery as compared to Wifi.
* If you don't need internet during sleep you can disable this option and data as well.
If you are confused what to do , install apps like Juice Defender which will automatically control your wifi settings based on location , time etc..
- its totally your preference
My current setting : Let wifi turn on automatically
I just leave it on wifi on always, even in sleep. Uses less battery, and reduces mobile data usage. If you're worried about battery (rare for a Note 2), there are plenty of more effective ways to save power.

[req] [setting] auto wifi off

something ive been noticing is that i get alot of battery drain from wifi. most of it comes from searching for wifi and i leave it on because periodically throughout a day im in and out of my saved network's range. Id like it there was a setting or a system edit that would turn off the wifi after searching for 5 minutes and not finding one. i'm assuming the drainage is coming from the the MIMO technology or something. anyways, if you have something it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
I am using Tasker for this, when I come home or office, mobile data switch off and wifi turns on
Do you need location on for this?

either that, or something else like bluetooth. but location is preferred. I use MacroDroid, a Tasker alternative with a much better UI, and i can set the location update cycle to 10 mins or so to prevent battery drain
Or you can use the cell tower near you option in tasker.
Location/GPS uses battery as well so make use of what is already being used for calls & sms

Search Tasker app for rooted phones, you can do unlimited settings with tasker. I have set my tasker to find cell tower near my home, when my phone receive signal from that tower then it make turn off mobile data and make turn on wifi and it knows that i reach home. same for work.
search in google `best tasker profiles` so you will see what i trying to explain
It's a feature of Android O
during the waiting, Tasker is the best app (and you don't need root to do this)

u can use this app and save your preferred time settings on startup and u r good to go . . iam using it from a very long time it saves more battery . and can set wifi off once when u lock the phone also . u can set wifi hotspot connectivity timings also. u have settings that can change network to 2g when using WiFi (this saves u much battery drain from frequent network change). please view the full settings from the options in app. it has both root (required for only toggling networks)and non -root capability . please turnoff battery optimization for this app otherwise it wont work.. this app wont consume that much battery considering excessive battery drain due to frequent wifi search.

i think this would help u .
