It does use some power when searching for networks. There is probably an APP or settings that you can change to set the Freq of checks maybe. Or you can just turn of the Wifi radio when you know your not going to use it.

Yes it uses a lot of power if its regularly searching for networks. Especially if you're moving around and seeing dozens of WiFi spots. Just turn off WiFi when not in use, simple as that.
A lot of custom ROMs have less aggressive Wifi seeking intervals. You can usually set it manually with ease too. Lots of apps out there if you don't want to do it manually.
All that was said is true, but still I find that 30% usage for Wifi just for searching nearby networks is a little too much...
Although I haven't got anything to compare with, I always turn wifi off if I'm not using it during long periods.

I turn wifi off when it is not needed and battery life goes from one to two days.

I've been using Tasker to turn wifi on at home/work and off when I'm elsewhere. It's using cell towers to determine location, so hopefully it won't impact the battery much.
I leave wifi on 24/7, today it has used 2% of the 60% battery i've used.
I travel through london so I assume it is constantly finding new wifi signals.

I leave wifi on all the time as well, and I also only have used 2% of the 70-80% battery I used up already.
Try going into wifi settings, then advanced wifi settings, then turn off the new wifi network available notification option.
This increased my battery life slightly.

Y5 - Battery Saver helps out tremendously! I barely ever use more than 2% when home all day...although that may be a bug but I started a thread for that already.

That 30% displayed can be deceptive since it's based on the amount of battery discharged and not entire battery capacity.
Well wifi, when on is looking to connect to known networks. If the signal is weak it will disconnect and connect to another network near by if there is that has better signal. This process does use some battery. The biggest drain will occur when you are actively using wifi, that is when you download or upload. So the best way to save battery, is to close wifi when not needed. If however you want wifi you can set it to never sleep. This way even if the screen goes off wifi will be connected and your device wont use the 3G which is way more power hungry.

I'm wondering what is better option in the Sleep Policy for battery life when you have no access to a WiFi network? Sure, sure, turning off the WiFi will get you better results when you don't have access to WiFi but the location features you get from using WiFi.
At work I have no access to the WiFi network which isn't connected to the net anyways. But it works great for getting precise location information when inside the building.
I tried keeping it on "Never" but wow does that kill my battery.
Does putting it on "Never when plugged in" or "After 15 minutes" keep it from searching for a WiFi signal all the darn time which is what is killing my battery.
From what I have seen since I changed it to "Never when plugged in" half way threw the shift it doesn't seem to draw as much power. But I did check my Google Latitude history and it seems to be pulling my location from WiFi instead of the cell tower. All but a few times did it get the location from WiFi instead of the cell tower. So that has me wondering is it still looking for WiFi or just turning it on when getting a location request.
Any help would be appreciated.

I am using a stock HTC Droid Incredible.
I would like to have it where when the screen went off the wifi went off, but that could be a problem if the screen keeps going on and off from texts or whatever else. Would probably use more battery starting wifi over and over again.
This issue has happend 2 times. It used my 3G data over 90MB for APP downloading!
As you know, the phone won't allow you to download a big APP without wifi or pc connection by design.
Yesterday I downloaded the trial version of Need for Speed(about 127MB) from marketplace and turned on WIFI before that. I just checked the detailed list of my 3G usage yesterday. In that time it downloaded 90MB+ from 3G network in 20 minutes.
I guess the phone turned off the wifi in sleep mode and continue downloading the APP through 3G.
It should be a bug!
Yes, it is a known issue that WP7 turns off wi-fi when phone goes into sleep. To work around this issue, you need to keep the phone plugged in.
Modern wi-fi chips in phones drain less battery juice when you leave it on all the time than constantly off-on-off. Also, it does not necessary use more battery downloading via wi-fi than 3G. I guess MS didn't get that notice when implementing WP7
We can only hope this is addressed in upcoming NoDo update.
Pretty sure this feature isn't designed like this to save battery while connected to a wifi network, I'm sure it's implemented with this design to save battery while you AREN'T in range of one of your networks, rather than having the wireless chip constantly poll for networks...
As someone else said, just plug your phone into the power outlet and wifi will always stay on.

I have my phone now for 4 month and I've checked following thing: the battery drain is incredible on bad mobile coverage. In my apartment I have really pur reception, all phones loose the reception permanently (in this way one x is much better than my wife's Iphone 4).
It is normal, that the phone consumes much energy, but one x consumes just to much. For example, if I'm at home, the drain is like 2 or even 3 procent in hour even on sense roms, and if I'm in place with good reception, it's like 1 procent in 2 and more hours, so the overall batter life is waaaay much better...
Now the question is, if I could do something to make my phone to be not so aggressive on searching for the network? I know, it can bring worse network, but it is not really a problem for me.
P. S.:switching to flight mode is not an answer for me

flight mode is the first thing i would have said, but not an option, so the next thing i would look at is something like vodafone suresignal - check with your network provider, they might offer a service similar, basically you get a little box from them, plug into your internet connection, and it will give your phone signal.
can't really think of something apart from a kernel tweak of some sort that would stop the phone scanning so much for cell towers, but i'm not sure where that would be, or even if it is possible..

and set it to GSM only, this will force the phone to only use 2g signal, means you don't get 3g internet so it will be very slow for internet, but 2g uses less power than 3g.
i do this alot as where i live there is low/2g signal only so i force it on to the 2g to stop it looking for a 3g network

I use this option a lot, this is not directly what I asked for. I just want my gsm radio to be not so aggressive. Just like changing cpu governors values

If there is no reception at all the phone radio shouldn't use much power, this is because it is just listening for a signal and will not be transmitting anything. If the radio is consuming more power, it is likely because it can hear the transmitter (they obviously transmit with much more power) and so the phone on hearing the mother ship is trying to reply at full transmit power available to it, but this isn't enough to be heard which drains more power. It doesn't taking many attempts at transmitting at full power to have a battery draining faster than usual.
Some applications on having no data connection might start waking the device a lot in a panic and don't back off trying, so every few seconds they will be waking the phone trying to connect to a remote server somewhere. Do you have Wi-Fi on to keep applications happy if they want to keep phoning home?
You have few options really,
1) is to just the mobile phone part off and leave Wi-Fi running which should help. You can do this by switching to flight mode then enabling just the Wi-Fi, or there will be widgets available I'm sure to just turn off the mobile phone part.
2) Turn off syncing to see if it is an application getting panicky, again you will have widgets you can add to your home page to easily switch this setting
3) You can use a Phone Schedule type application and have your phone go to flight mode automatically timed for when you are usually at home and overnight to save battery drain, free ones at the Play store.
4) If you have internet access at your apartment and depending on your mobile phone operator you might be able to get a femtocell, this will give you a full signal and service at home.

Its not just the HOX that does this, its all phones and it is bloody annoying.
My wifes parents live in the middle of nowhere and if we didnt' change our phones (inc, hox, s2,n900,iphone3...) to flightmode when there over night they would be flat.

dial *#*#4636#*#* and goto phone information, scroll down, and you'll have all different modes there.
sometimes this doesn't stick though
that option would probably be there on a normal custom rom (unless this isn't actually possible on at&t??)
i could be misinformed, im from uk, so a little un educated on how the networks work over there..
I have N7 LTE 4G and most of the time I use it with Wi-Fi only. Yesterday I decided to get a pre-paid Sim to use for Data only when I am in a place that doesn't have Wi-Fi with 1GB per month data for $2.90 (yes it is THAT cheap in Egypt ) but only 3G/HSDPA/HSPA+
Now the problem is, Cellular network is always running and battery drains fast even though I use the internet on Wi-Fi and turned Mobile Data off.
I've read that I can turn on 2G to save battery and disable the cellular signal and indeed when I check 2G, I get no bars in cellular top icon and it says No Service (Network Name) BUT..... as soon as I open internet browser or any internet app, the cellular network works again by itself although 2G is still checked !!
Is this some kind of bug ?
The only solution I can do is to turn on Airplane Mode and turn Wi-Fi on afterwards which is not ideal
Any help would be much appreciated.
There is an app called Battery Monitor Widget that has "Tests" tab when I press on it, it opens "Testing" page in which the first option is Tablet Info. There is a list called "GSM Only" in which there is a toggle to Turn Off Radio and indeed it turns it off
I use airplane mode then just turn wifi back on to keep the cellular radio off.

It really depends on your signal strength. If you have strong signal you shouldn't see a huge difference. If you have a weak signal then it could be a big boost to your battery life.
And I'm not sure why you said that it was "not ideal" in your initial post. That's really the best way to go about it.

Signal is always good but I don't even need it to be there when I am on Wi-Fi as the tablet has no GSM phone functionality.
I think there is something wrong elsewhere with the battery draining so fast other than the GSM Radio being On.
The battery was good and lasted 2 full days with moderate usage and Wi-Fi always On but it started draining fast when I left the tablet untill it totally discharged and woke up to find it powered off and then charged it till 100% and battery reached 55% in 10 hours with very light usage
It sounds like you have an app draining your battery in the background. Try installing Better Battery Stats and see what's using all your power.

Hello guys. I suppose I'm not alone in this. My phone losses over 20% every night when connected to wifi network. I tested with wifi off and mobile data (4g) on, and it losses only 4%. Drain is not caused by any apps on my phone, and my wakelocks are ok(tested by GSam Battery Monitor and Wakelok detector). Phone does go into Dose mode overnight. After long period of testing and searching internet I did full wipe data/cache and install stock rom from oneplus site, and install just a few apps from playstore. It was disappointing when wifi drain continued after all I did. Also, when I turn on airplane mode, phone losses 2% overnight, so my conclusion is that wifi causes drain. If you guys have some advice for me, it would be helpful. Thank you!
Same issue here. I have tried everything (clean installs... Formatting data... Multiple roms and firmwares etc)
This is with scanning off and location off. It's Oreo related for sure as the issue dissappears when I flash Nougat

I have the Same issue on my Huawei p20 lite with Android 8.0. I think it's definitely the software
I noticed that the Wifi drain only appears if there are many wifi networks around.
At home we have 3 networks around and my phone doesnt lose any battery over night.
At my girlfriends place there are like 25 networks around and my phone loses >20% overnight.
Realy strange.
Maybe it has something to do with wifi scanning in the background?

Nah.. Think it's the wifi configuration on the router. When I switched ISPs, I was given a new router and the drain disappeared.
There have always been 4 wifi networks that show up on my devices.
