Don't let your phone sleep while downloading a big APP via WIFI

This issue has happend 2 times. It used my 3G data over 90MB for APP downloading!
As you know, the phone won't allow you to download a big APP without wifi or pc connection by design.
Yesterday I downloaded the trial version of Need for Speed(about 127MB) from marketplace and turned on WIFI before that. I just checked the detailed list of my 3G usage yesterday. In that time it downloaded 90MB+ from 3G network in 20 minutes.
I guess the phone turned off the wifi in sleep mode and continue downloading the APP through 3G.
It should be a bug!

Yes, it is a known issue that WP7 turns off wi-fi when phone goes into sleep. To work around this issue, you need to keep the phone plugged in.
Modern wi-fi chips in phones drain less battery juice when you leave it on all the time than constantly off-on-off. Also, it does not necessary use more battery downloading via wi-fi than 3G. I guess MS didn't get that notice when implementing WP7
We can only hope this is addressed in upcoming NoDo update.

Pretty sure this feature isn't designed like this to save battery while connected to a wifi network, I'm sure it's implemented with this design to save battery while you AREN'T in range of one of your networks, rather than having the wireless chip constantly poll for networks...

As someone else said, just plug your phone into the power outlet and wifi will always stay on.

I See my wifi has used 30% of my battery but ive been on 3G all day, does it drain the battery searching for networks?

It does use some power when searching for networks. There is probably an APP or settings that you can change to set the Freq of checks maybe. Or you can just turn of the Wifi radio when you know your not going to use it.

Yes it uses a lot of power if its regularly searching for networks. Especially if you're moving around and seeing dozens of WiFi spots. Just turn off WiFi when not in use, simple as that.

A lot of custom ROMs have less aggressive Wifi seeking intervals. You can usually set it manually with ease too. Lots of apps out there if you don't want to do it manually.

All that was said is true, but still I find that 30% usage for Wifi just for searching nearby networks is a little too much...
Although I haven't got anything to compare with, I always turn wifi off if I'm not using it during long periods.

I've been using Tasker to turn wifi on at home/work and off when I'm elsewhere. It's using cell towers to determine location, so hopefully it won't impact the battery much.

I leave wifi on 24/7, today it has used 2% of the 60% battery i've used.
I travel through london so I assume it is constantly finding new wifi signals.

I leave wifi on all the time as well, and I also only have used 2% of the 70-80% battery I used up already.
Try going into wifi settings, then advanced wifi settings, then turn off the new wifi network available notification option.
This increased my battery life slightly.

Y5 - Battery Saver helps out tremendously! I barely ever use more than 2% when home all day...although that may be a bug but I started a thread for that already.

That 30% displayed can be deceptive since it's based on the amount of battery discharged and not entire battery capacity.

Well wifi, when on is looking to connect to known networks. If the signal is weak it will disconnect and connect to another network near by if there is that has better signal. This process does use some battery. The biggest drain will occur when you are actively using wifi, that is when you download or upload. So the best way to save battery, is to close wifi when not needed. If however you want wifi you can set it to never sleep. This way even if the screen goes off wifi will be connected and your device wont use the 3G which is way more power hungry.

Wakelock/Alarm While WiFi is Connected

I'm getting a wakelock alarm that I cannot seem to get rid of. This has been troubling me for the past week with no real resolution.
This wakelock only occurs while my WiFi is connected and mobile data is still on. Almost 3 every single minute! This will drain my battery 25% overnight since it's constantly trying to reconnect the mobile data. If I get my phone into any of the below configurations, the drain goes away and I lose like 0.25% per hour.

If I turn off mobile data which connected to WiFi, the wakelock goes away.
If I turn off WiFi and just leave mobile data on, the wakelock goes away.
If I have WiFi on but not connected to anything, and mobile data on, the wakelock goes away.
So it's definitely not my mobile signal, nor is it my WiFi signal in my house since it's very strong and mobile data usage is zero while i'm downloading, surfing net, or just idle.
It is my understanding that the phone doesn't need the mobile data connection if WiFi is turned on. Anyone got any ideas about this?
I am running Dirty Unicorns 9.2 with stock kernel (I have tried others with the same result) as well as stock modem and latest 23B modem. This was never an issue with Stock ROM or Hello Jasmine 4.4.2. The devs of Dirty Unicorns as well as some other testers do not have this issue. I have flashed and flashed with no success.

I'm having this exact same issue on an Xperia Z1 Compact on rooted stock 5.1.1. I am seeing all the exact same symptoms (only when connected to wi-fi and with mobile data on). I even have the exact same frequency of wakeups (~2.5/min). I've clean flashed my ROM many times now, and it hasn't solved the issue. Did you ever track down the cause of this?

5.1.1 WiFi/Cell Standby Battery Drain

Anyone else getting this after the update? Cell standby is absolutely killing my battery when WiFi is on. Turning it off, I'm (kind of) back to normal. I've done a factory reset, forgotten my WiFi then cleared the cache, and it's still the same. My phone was running perfectly fine before, now I regret installing the update.

I am not. I have better battery when on Wi-Fi.

i have the same problem with my galaxy s6, since I made the update the cell standby is killing my battery, i use lte all the day because of that..

Battery life has been abysmal for me since the update as well. Samsung needs to fix this ****.

Turn wifi on, let it connect, then go forget your connection. Reboot into recovery, wipe cache, then reboot your phone. It has worked for me so far. Cell Standby still shows up on the list but I'm only losing about 2% battery/hour with moderate texting.

It is an issue with WiFi! I have tried all the fixes found in a google search for "S6 Edge Cell Standby Battery Drain". Here is what I found from my testing:
Day 1: All day with WiFi on, with good cell coverage. Had to charge twice throughout the day, and Cell Standby was at about 40% each time I put it on the charger. Charged overnight to 100%
Day 2: All day with WiFi off, same location as Day 1. Battery never drained past 30% with the same amount of use. Cell Standby at the bottom of my list at 1%. Charged overnight to 100%
Day 3: All Day with WiFi on, using WiFi calling. (VoLTE turned off) Same result as Day 1. Had to charge multiple times throughout day and Cell Standby at 40%.
VoLTE turned off, cleared cache, factory reset. Tmobile device running 5.1.1

I think the issue here pertains to what apps are installed and not necessarily running actively.
I you have any or several social networking apps ( Fb, Skype, instagram, twitter ) you don't even have to use them because they are always busy in the background unless you setup auto stop.
I have no social networking apps installed or active so my system runs very lean, have seen cell standby but never higher than 2% or 3%.
I have ran my WiFi all day while at home and connected to a network and have gotten a full day with 20% to 10% left on the battery.
Now results would be different if you travel and aren't connected to a network.
I'm in a metropolitan area with great lte 4g signal and don't use WiFi that often and just using 4g I have gotten great battery life to the tune of 30+ hours with battery to spare.
Do some app inventory.

I tried this, unfortunately didn't work for me. Battery drain is making me hate this phone with each passing day.

My issue is NOT app related.
I Factory reset, then ran two days of testing.
After factory reset, I also cleared cache again.
No social media apps configured.
Turned on phone from reset and setup google account only.
No apps installed, aside from factory apps.
My tests are with VoLTE turned off and WiFi calling turned off.
*Day 1 - WiFi off completely*
100% charge at 0700, used it all day at work and home. Cell Standby used 1% total and I ended the day at 2300 with over 50% battery remaining.
*Day2 - WiFi on all day*
100% charge at 0700, used it all day at work and home. Cell Standby used 43% total and my battery died at about 1530.
T-Mobile support stated it was a known issue, Samsung could not "troubleshoot" it properly and just wants me to ship it in for "repair". They did suggest taking my device to a "Samsung Experience Shop" in my local Best Buy. I did and they factory reset the phone. They also informed me that this is an issue with the S6 Edge, and that the factory reset is not going to resolve my issue.

I too have great 4G signal here, and if I leave WiFi off, I also get great battery life. The issue is when WiFi is ON. No matter what, I MUST have access to a charger if I use WiFi at all throughout my day.

That makes sense, especially if the wifi radio is scanning all the time looking for networks to connect to.
We should have the option to "turn off" wifi scanning and turn on when needed.

Although not ideal, turning off wifi fixes the issue for me.

Any news on this issue? My phone immediately start to lag and drain out the battery when I connect it to a wifi. On cellular it works fine though. This should not be a hard one to straighten out!

ok i have same problem. and only 1 way for fix it is turn off LTE. go to mobile networks >>> network mode >>> choice "WCDMA only"(4G only). it will be fine. For sure.
this problem is because software android 5.0 from GG. if can please go to SS website and report. let them fix it.

Wifi, BT and poor coverage drain my battery

Hi, I have the nexus 5x since Oct 2016.
With wifi, BT or poor coverage, y consumption is high. Minimum of 1,5%/hour. With mobile data 0,2%/hour. Perhaps with poor coverage is normal, but I don't understand why it happens with Wifi (At home (2.4Ghz and 5 Ghz) and at work (5Ghz)). I have tested multiples cases.
I have had 7.0 (stock), 7.1(stock), 7.1.2 (Dev), without root and with root + (Franco kernel or ElementalX kernel) + naptime. I have desactivate Wifi scaning on location. I never see the flat line in battery graph with Wifi.
I use the app "gsam battery" to see the battery graph.The kernel and Android system are the first app suckers, I think it's normal. I don't see anthing unusual in battery graph. The mobile go to sleep mode correctly.
What would be the problem? What new tests I can do?

Question: Are you using Project Fi, or any other carrier that allows for WiFi calling/texting?
To clarify: I don't think Project Fi is the culprit, but I may have a solution that I've been testing.

A common complaint that goes back to my N5 running Kit Kat. The fix was to force the device to only use 2.4Ghz Wifi, however since 7.0 Google has removed that option.
Changing router's or updating the router firmware has helped some in the past but not for me.
Does your device Doze properly on a mobile data connection also? And does wifi occasionally idle properly, say when switching back and forth between wifi and cell data? That's the case for me currently, and you know something's wrong when a 3G connection idles better than Wifi.

I'm not using Project Fi, or any other carrier that allows for WiFi calling. My carrier is vodafone, a normal carrier.
I have tested a router with 2.4Ghz only, but the problem persists.
Doze works correctly with mobile data connection and Wifi. I can see the mobile go to sleep mode correctly in both cases.
But in idle mode, wifi use a 1.5%/hour and mobile data 0.2%/hour, but I don't see nothings strange in the graphs or stadistics.
What I can I try?

Ya sounds exactly like the issue I was describing. The fix used to be to force the device to only pick up 2.4Ghz connections but Google took the option away ever since 7.0. Being on a network they only transmits 2.4Ghz doesn't help as the device is still listening to and picking up 5Ghz signals.
There is no known fix that I'm aware of. I don't think Google considers it their problem, they would likely say it's a router compatibility issue and tell us to upgrade our router firmware.
