something ive been noticing is that i get alot of battery drain from wifi. most of it comes from searching for wifi and i leave it on because periodically throughout a day im in and out of my saved network's range. Id like it there was a setting or a system edit that would turn off the wifi after searching for 5 minutes and not finding one. i'm assuming the drainage is coming from the the MIMO technology or something. anyways, if you have something it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
I am using Tasker for this, when I come home or office, mobile data switch off and wifi turns on
Do you need location on for this?

either that, or something else like bluetooth. but location is preferred. I use MacroDroid, a Tasker alternative with a much better UI, and i can set the location update cycle to 10 mins or so to prevent battery drain
Or you can use the cell tower near you option in tasker.
Location/GPS uses battery as well so make use of what is already being used for calls & sms

Search Tasker app for rooted phones, you can do unlimited settings with tasker. I have set my tasker to find cell tower near my home, when my phone receive signal from that tower then it make turn off mobile data and make turn on wifi and it knows that i reach home. same for work.
search in google `best tasker profiles` so you will see what i trying to explain
It's a feature of Android O
during the waiting, Tasker is the best app (and you don't need root to do this)

u can use this app and save your preferred time settings on startup and u r good to go . . iam using it from a very long time it saves more battery . and can set wifi off once when u lock the phone also . u can set wifi hotspot connectivity timings also. u have settings that can change network to 2g when using WiFi (this saves u much battery drain from frequent network change). please view the full settings from the options in app. it has both root (required for only toggling networks)and non -root capability . please turnoff battery optimization for this app otherwise it wont work.. this app wont consume that much battery considering excessive battery drain due to frequent wifi search.

Does wifi use up more battery then 3g? or is it the other way round
for Sure 3g drains more

cheers, on the wifi > advanced menu, which is the best wi-fi sleep policy to use? at the mo mine never sleeps
actually, i think you'll find Wifi uses more.
Put it to 15 minutes, cos if you leave wifi on all the time, it'll drain your battery quite heavily.

Yes that's true if you're comparing a 3g tower that's close to one that's far away. Wifi though is a different standard than 3g and so uses more power to transmit data, more data faster.
You'll find that if you're downloading a big file wifi is better because the file is downloaded much faster but for regular use 3g is better because it is a uses less power in general.
thats good to know cheers
Why does Android System and Standby eat more battery juice then the display itself??
Due to the crappy battery life I even opted to turn off network locations... but this phone is still eating up the battery...

i noticed the same thing today, i was reading that the g2 uses network location a lot so that could be the reason, could also be a 3rd party app

Yes, turn off network location (GPS is OK to leave on; it will only engage when you run maps or related app). network location runs 24/7 and kills your battery FAST.

Network location *should not* run full time. If it IS, then there is a serious bug in the firmware or you are running some program that is constantly asking for it. Network location should only run when something is asking for the location.

Logcat shows notification activity once per minute. I haven't figured out if this is actually getting a location fix every time or just reading a stored setting, but it's keeping the CPU fairly active during sleep.

Just so its clear, Network Locations is OFF.
I just want to know why Android System and Standby use up more power then the display itself!
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
well if we are strictly talking in terms of LOCATION, than it would make sense to use GPS instead of networks loctions because GPS gives you the EXACT location coordinates, as oppose to network location TRIANGLUATES your location by calculating how far are you from the towers.
KEEP IN MIND: Just because you can turn OFF network locations in the phone doesn't mean its actually off. Federal authorities can have access to your location by remotely turning on the feature and locate you. That's ofcourse if you've been a bad boy (or girl?) but yea... big brother is watching....
I See my wifi has used 30% of my battery but ive been on 3G all day, does it drain the battery searching for networks?
It does use some power when searching for networks. There is probably an APP or settings that you can change to set the Freq of checks maybe. Or you can just turn of the Wifi radio when you know your not going to use it.

Yes it uses a lot of power if its regularly searching for networks. Especially if you're moving around and seeing dozens of WiFi spots. Just turn off WiFi when not in use, simple as that.
A lot of custom ROMs have less aggressive Wifi seeking intervals. You can usually set it manually with ease too. Lots of apps out there if you don't want to do it manually.
All that was said is true, but still I find that 30% usage for Wifi just for searching nearby networks is a little too much...
Although I haven't got anything to compare with, I always turn wifi off if I'm not using it during long periods.

I turn wifi off when it is not needed and battery life goes from one to two days.

I've been using Tasker to turn wifi on at home/work and off when I'm elsewhere. It's using cell towers to determine location, so hopefully it won't impact the battery much.
I leave wifi on 24/7, today it has used 2% of the 60% battery i've used.
I travel through london so I assume it is constantly finding new wifi signals.

I leave wifi on all the time as well, and I also only have used 2% of the 70-80% battery I used up already.
Try going into wifi settings, then advanced wifi settings, then turn off the new wifi network available notification option.
This increased my battery life slightly.

Y5 - Battery Saver helps out tremendously! I barely ever use more than 2% when home all day...although that may be a bug but I started a thread for that already.

That 30% displayed can be deceptive since it's based on the amount of battery discharged and not entire battery capacity.
Well wifi, when on is looking to connect to known networks. If the signal is weak it will disconnect and connect to another network near by if there is that has better signal. This process does use some battery. The biggest drain will occur when you are actively using wifi, that is when you download or upload. So the best way to save battery, is to close wifi when not needed. If however you want wifi you can set it to never sleep. This way even if the screen goes off wifi will be connected and your device wont use the 3G which is way more power hungry.
Does any sort of app exist? I'm rooted and for battery saving purposes, would it not be a good idea to switch to 2g automatically when the screen is off for more than a minute? Then when the phone is woken up switch back to 3g?
I'm not talking about turning data off completely as this would stop whatsapp messages coming through.

Not sure if that's what you need though.
It uses mobile data though... For 2g and 3g I'll try to create a new app for that
But for now yeah that's what I have
Would Tasker not be able to do that?
(I've only used it a few times recently but sounds within its capabilities)

It's not that simple and probably not worthwhile. 2G and 3G on standby are pretty close in terms of power usage, the only time you usually find an advantage with 2G is where the 3G signal is weaker, so less power is used keeping in touch with the 2G tower. If you fix the phone to 2G, you also save some power if moving around as the phone is only talking/listening to 2G cells, and less likely to be swapping about. When you have "auto" selected and you are moving around the phone has to monitor both 2G and 3G cells to be ready to make a handover decision, so that is extra power.
If you have the phone constantly dropping 2G to go to 3G when you turn on the screen, then back again, that all takes extra power to negotiate with the cells. Also if you get a phone call and the phone switches to 3G, this will drop all connections when the setting is changed, as you can only have a smooth handover when the phone is in "auto" mode and has already established a handover strategy.
Then you need to factor in data usage. When any applications sync while your phone is in standby (screen off) if on 2G that sync is going to take longer, and the longer it takes the longer your phone has to stay awake to wait for it to happen, and the radio is on longer transmitting, so more power is used than there might have been on 3G.
The net effect of such a setting is likely to use more power overall.
Regards
Phil
I have N7 LTE 4G and most of the time I use it with Wi-Fi only. Yesterday I decided to get a pre-paid Sim to use for Data only when I am in a place that doesn't have Wi-Fi with 1GB per month data for $2.90 (yes it is THAT cheap in Egypt ) but only 3G/HSDPA/HSPA+
Now the problem is, Cellular network is always running and battery drains fast even though I use the internet on Wi-Fi and turned Mobile Data off.
I've read that I can turn on 2G to save battery and disable the cellular signal and indeed when I check 2G, I get no bars in cellular top icon and it says No Service (Network Name) BUT..... as soon as I open internet browser or any internet app, the cellular network works again by itself although 2G is still checked !!
Is this some kind of bug ?
The only solution I can do is to turn on Airplane Mode and turn Wi-Fi on afterwards which is not ideal
Any help would be much appreciated.
There is an app called Battery Monitor Widget that has "Tests" tab when I press on it, it opens "Testing" page in which the first option is Tablet Info. There is a list called "GSM Only" in which there is a toggle to Turn Off Radio and indeed it turns it off
I use airplane mode then just turn wifi back on to keep the cellular radio off.

It really depends on your signal strength. If you have strong signal you shouldn't see a huge difference. If you have a weak signal then it could be a big boost to your battery life.
And I'm not sure why you said that it was "not ideal" in your initial post. That's really the best way to go about it.

Signal is always good but I don't even need it to be there when I am on Wi-Fi as the tablet has no GSM phone functionality.
I think there is something wrong elsewhere with the battery draining so fast other than the GSM Radio being On.
The battery was good and lasted 2 full days with moderate usage and Wi-Fi always On but it started draining fast when I left the tablet untill it totally discharged and woke up to find it powered off and then charged it till 100% and battery reached 55% in 10 hours with very light usage
It sounds like you have an app draining your battery in the background. Try installing Better Battery Stats and see what's using all your power.
