I'm trying to return to stock using RUU. The OS I'm on is Windows 7 and 8 (multiple computers)
The problem is after double clicking on the RUU nothing comes out (in Windows 8).
Or there's an error message: "installscript setup launcher has stopped working" (in Windows 7).
Went into temp folder and doesn't see any rom.zip and files.
Has anyone else ran into this problem before?
try right click and run as admin.

Did that already, I was running the RUU under administrator profile.
Same problem
Got the same problem. Any help? Tried it on 1 Win8 machine and 3 Win7 machines.
Try Disabling Antivirus/Firewall, then run as administrator ?
Re-download the RUU.....If you don't get to the main installer screen of the ruu its a bad download !

idk about how to fix it but u may wanna try the sd card flashing method which is found in the wiki
well it seems its only with ROMs that are custom cooked. I took it back to the windows 6 ROM released by at&t and it ran fine and everything worked, but everytime i try to run a Binkys RUU or Hermes MRH it gives me the error again...
Install the latest .net framework on your PC....this error is a classic.
all you need is .NET framework from Microsoft installed. Version 2 and above works.
Edit: What he said
For some reason RUU's will not open on my laptop. They will on my desktop but it's currently out of commission. It says the program failed to initialize, any ideas? I've tried multiple files.

cecopy.exe application error
problems with initiation error 0xc0000142 click OK to close the application

reinstalled windows :/ fresh installation
drivers + active sync .... still the same issue :/

Hey, so.. this is problem on x64 systems. I slightly modified path to the wpupdate.exe so its working ok now.
Feel free to post.
I had this problem and all i did was removed the 'Windows Phone Engineering Flashing Tool' and then reinstall it. And it works afterwards.
it just a .bat file.. when it is finished it will close.
That said if it finished right when you started it.. there was an error and it didn't update your phone (most likely you didn't run the update tool)
if you don't want it to go away when it finishes... open it in a a command prompt. (cmd)

Plus 1 That.. Did the same thing and Worked Perfectly afterwards
Neither one of those worked for me. Theres problem with path to wpupdate.exe on 64bit OS.. Cmd in bat is trying to reach it in PF x86 folder, wheres no zune installed.
Mango RTM installed on my samsung omnia 7 with no problems at all on X64 Windows 7 home premium just followed instructions

If the bat file for the 7720 part keeps closing on you, make sure you aren't running the official Zune 4.8. Make sure you have the beta & that the updateWP.exe is the same build #. If they don't match, it'll give an error that they don't & close. You can see the error by start>run>cmd>ok>manually type if the bat's location. The CMD windows won't auto close.

Having an issue I've not seen before. I've got an S-OFF M8, AT&T Branded and Super CID. Tried installing the new AT&T Lollipop RUU today and it shuts down after agreeing to the License Agreement. I thought it might be an issue with this particular file, but I re-downloaded it and same thing. Tried a T-Mo file as well and it also failed.
Any idea why? This is a new laptop, running Win7 but I've never had the problem when I've changed laptops before.
I had issues in Windows 8 where it would get to the T&Cs and then stop, changed the RUU compatibility settings to run as Windows 7 and admin and it worked fine so perhaps run the RUU as admin (if you're not already) and see what happens

Good idea, but didn't work for me. I tried turning off Fastboot as well like some suggested. Nevertheless, I kluged my way onto the new AT&T build. Good enough until I get off the road in another week. Thanks for the idea.

10) Q: When I run the Windows RUU.EXE it just exits when I click next
The RUU executable needs the MS Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Package (x86) package installed.
