I don't wanna use monstrous VS2010 (which requires .net4 & silverlight4) on my home notebook so I found way to extract Microsoft XDE from "Visual Studio 2010 Express for Windows Phone CTP"
Attachment contains "extracted" from the package standalone emulator.
Just unpack attached zip and run sde_xde-enu.msi (if UAC is enabled you should start command promt and execute msiexec /i sde_xde-enu)
In MS terms install is silent so you don't need press "next" or "ok".
After install you find folder "%Program Files%\Microsoft XDE\" with Windows Phone 7 Emulator.
If you install the emulator on win x64 the path to emulator will look like this "%Program Files(x86)%\Microsoft XDE\".
The emulator will be installed both x86 and x64 but it seems that it does not work on x64 systems.
There is no WP7 images in archive so you must download it by yourself (original by M$ or patched version by Dan Ardelean).
Original image of WP7 by M$
Patched image of WP7 by Dan Ardelean mirror
After installing the application and download the file, you can run the emulator using the command:
Code:
"%Program Files%\Microsoft XDE\1.0\XDE.exe" %path_to_downloaded_image%
Despite the fact that it is installed on the XP, it only works on Vista and newer
step by step installation's guide by anarchyuk
So will you need Visual Studio Express Edition and all that jazz to make this work? Or just this installation and the emulator image?
Btw great work
main target was just to use the emulator without installing VS2010
just install this package and add the wp7_image
Works like a charm!! Thanks!
Image file
Thank you for the emulator
How can i get an image, do you have a URL or shared storage?
I've updated the first post with wp7image's URLs
anyone else get this to work?
Thanks for this
tried, but does not work at all:
1) installed from msi
2) run FAR as administrator
3) copied original WM70C1.bin to "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft XDE\1.0\"
4) in directory "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft XDE\1.0\" typed:
Code:
XDE.exe WM70C1.bin
and nothing appeared, and no process xde.exe running in task manager
if i type XDE.exe without parameters, it shows its help screen, but if i run with any parameter (even if it is wrong) it shows nothing.
is this problem related only to my machine or somebody else is experiencing this also?

hmm.. I've tried many times on different PCs (win vista sp1 and newer but only x86) and I've had no problems..
there is just one problem that I found it will not work on winXP
pm me if you have any IM. it's much easier to me to talk in Russian
hmm again..
i've just test the emulator in the virtual machine with installed w7 x64 - all the symptoms as l2tp described
I'll try to find x64 version tonight
Thanks Sir
I installed this and it does not create the Microsoft XDE folder in program files....I am on Windows 7 x86. No error of anything. It did take a while and gave me a UAC prompt after a while.....
Edit: I enabled logging by running the msi with /log logfile.txt and it said:
vmmmsm_custom: Running custom action CA_InstallVMMDriver
vmmmsm_custom: Error creating VMM service, E = 6
CustomAction CA_InstallVMMDriver.3D2F911E_A60A_4C07_8F7D_5306DC073E9A returned actual error code 1603 (note this may not be 100% accurate if translation happened inside sandbox)
Action ended 17:11:12: InstallFinalize. Return value 3.
vmmmsm_custom: Running custom action CA_RemoveVMMDriver
vmmmsm_custom: There was an error stopping the VMM service. Run setup again after manually stopping the VMM service. (error code 6)
vmmmsm_custom: There was an error deleting the VMM service. The service has not been deleted. (error code 6)
I guess it is a problem with my machine with the virtual machine driver, but there seems to be no service...
today I'd installed CLEAN win vista sp2 business x86 on the virtual machine and then tested this emulator - all works fine but very slow
one more update - this installer conflicts with UAC (m$ suxxs one more time..)
if you install the full version of the VS2010 UAC's request appears at the beginning and everything is installed properly
but if you only install the emulator, then:
If UAC enabled installer says "all fine" but emulator doesn't install (see post hsclate)
If UAC disabled installer says "all fine" and emulator installs
Thanks working now....you don;t have to disable UAC if you don't want to, just run an elevated command prompt and run from there, then it installed. Thanks for the pointer...

Please work hard for the 64bit version, thanks really for this genius work.
Saw this emu-rip to late damn... After uninstalling all the "Microsoft Virtual Studio + I don't know how many crap from what Virtual Studio refused to uninstall via 'Programs and Features' so removed it kind of manually" the sde_xde-enu does not work anymore. While all that bullcrap was installed it actually did work...(@W7 x64)

Yesterday I tried to install VS2010 on win7 pro x64 and it seems that there is no x64 version of vs2010. Because the download is the same version as downloaded on win vista hp sp2.
If your update is stalled on an x64 machine when UpdateWP.exe crashes, go to the %program files%\Zune folder and delete UpdateWP.exe.
Then run the Setup-UpdateWP-x64.exe again and try the update again.
Cheers!
Please add thanks if this helps you out.

I'm trying to return to stock using RUU. The OS I'm on is Windows 7 and 8 (multiple computers)
The problem is after double clicking on the RUU nothing comes out (in Windows 8).
Or there's an error message: "installscript setup launcher has stopped working" (in Windows 7).
Went into temp folder and doesn't see any rom.zip and files.
Has anyone else ran into this problem before?

Did that already, I was running the RUU under administrator profile.
Same problem
Got the same problem. Any help? Tried it on 1 Win8 machine and 3 Win7 machines.
Try Disabling Antivirus/Firewall, then run as administrator ?
Re-download the RUU.....If you don't get to the main installer screen of the ruu its a bad download !
Hi everyone!
I know thousands of tutorials have been already made for the Surface RT/2, they are not often updated, are missing important steps or are not covering common errors occurring while doing this procedure, leaving the user wondering what to do next.
My tutorial will not be on this post, because of the limited layout options of an XDA post/thread.
Here is the tutorial: https://www.alexenferman.com/articles/SurfaceRT/W10-OA-SurfaceRT
This tutorial covers: The installation process, Pictures, Possible errors and solutions, Extras
I also made a video.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yzFqbBDKeXw
Comments or questions can be posted on this thread or in the comments section at the bottom section of the website.
Enjoy!
I followed this tutorial and I have windows 10 now. Still have question, why web browsing suck that much? It is incredibly slow.
In you tutorial you mention a build update using "install.ps1" I did not found that file in the zip.
Thank you again, great work you have there

Hi Alex,
I have read your instructions and most of the commends.
Very interesting and I am eager to give it a try.
One question though,
In the meantime my Surface RT is version 8.1 and even has the start items in a row on the left side, as in windows 10.
Should i go back to version 8.0 to start your Windows 10 upgrade?, or can I start from the present situation.
Your help is much appreciated.
Regards, Hans
Hi Alex,
your tutorial worked great for me. Thank You.
Just one more thing: After starting windows I do get an error like "Windows created a temporary paging file". So I thought maybe pagefile.sys is corrupt. I was no able to clean this. After sfc /scannow it tells me corrupt files are found but no correction was possible.
Maybe you have another idea.

Install Microsoft.NET.Native.Runtime.1.1.appx
Hi Alex,
At the end of your amazing tutorial it says:
Install Microsoft.NET.Native.Runtime.1.1.appx and the other one.
Can you explain how to install these files?
Clicking on them has no effect.

Works wonders, thank you very much!
Only problem I have is this "paging error" whenever I log in, which I couldn't seem to be able to fix even though I tried optimizing the W10 setting a few different ways. Do you have any suggestion?
Thank you again!
EDIT: I set it manually to max size (min 16 MB, max 2047 MB) and the error is gone!
thanks! that worked for me
had to do it twice though with two reboots
anyways solved!

Hello,
Thanks for the tuto and the video

Hi Alex, didn't realize you had a thread for the tutorial here as well. i asked on yt/page about my issue:
I'm stuck at the end. After I installed the Chinese wim 'successfully', I reboot it and the Surface shows blue screen error 0xc000000f and if I press the windows logo button on the tablet I get the 0xc0000428 error. The fix on the website doesn't work, when I go into "Troubleshooting", then select "Reset this PC" then select 8.1rt and there it gives me a msj saying 'insert your windows installation or recovery media to continue" The usb img last used did not work, tried putting the install wim from 8.1 image (SurfaceRT_BMR_30.8.17.0) and get the same message about 'insert your windows. Thanks for the tutorial!
The file in the Google drive folder is named "windows RT surface 1 (RT). wim"
Is that the name that should be entered on dism apply image command? System doesn't recognise install.wim and I don't have that file on my USB
diskpart exit ..then problem
I have followed your directions and ran into a problem. After diskpart> exit (enter)
Yours shows x:\Sources
Mine shows
x:Windows\system32>
Where is my issue? I am on Windows 8.1. Do I need to go back to 8.0?
Appreciate your time
Thank you very much . you gave me a new hope for my Rt1
if you need any test device for any modification just ask.

I think you installed the wrong image. People tend to install the Surface RT image on the Surface 2. In this case, simply install the Surface 2 wim and touch and keyboard will work again.
It's very sad and unfair that after the extended support ending in Jan 2023, surface RT users are not even allowed to download or install app from windows store anymore, such enormous company as Microsoft is just too rich and huge to not be evil, so i had to start to look for ways to get offline installers and manually install them. I can sucessfully install them and it shows on the windows store as installed. But the app could not run properly, i get a message saying the app needs to be repaird and it just stuck on repairing in the windows store. but i don't know whether it's because the issue of my system, as it's not the original system and I could not sync my license of the windows store in the app undates. As this is usually the reason that the app could not be updated in windows store. So maybe it could work on the original system? Somebody have a try?
You need to open your actual Microsoft Store.
Find the app that you want, get the link of the app.
go to this site:
https://store.rg-adguard.net
put the link in the box and click the tick
Look for and download the ARM or Neutral version of the app that you want, and it must be .appx or .appxbundle filetype.
You will also need to download other appx of the ARM or neutral as well. From the name you would possibly know they are the dependancies to run the actual app, so you will need to manually install them before install the actual app
I will use installing unpacker app for example. Run the powershell as administrater.
Install the dependencies first
just type in
Add-AppxPackage -Path "C:\Users\user1\Desktop\Microsoft.VCLibs.110.00_11.0.51106.1_arm__8wekyb3d8bbwe.Appx"
after this one is done, do the same for the next one
Microsoft.WinJS.1.0_1.0.9200.20789_neutral__8wekyb3d8bbwe.Appx
Add-AppxPackage -Path "C:\Users\user1\Desktop\Microsoft.VCLibs.110.00_11.0.51106.1_arm__8wekyb3d8bbwe.Appx"
After you get everything ready,
just type in
Add-AppxPackage -Path "C:\Users\user1\Desktop\unpacker.appx"
can get more details here: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/powershell/module/appx/add-appxpackage?view=windowsserver2022-ps
and voila
if you get error when installing, just read the details and it's possibly you haven't installed the dependencies, which means you will need to use the same code above to install the dependencies first.
-------------------------------------------------------
update:
Thanks to @dj_tech1 , I am pretty much sure that the evil Microsoft must have messed up the license after ceasing the support.
to be able to run the app, we will have to bypass the app license.
I have entered the test mode and also disble the DEP
BCDEdit /set - Windows drivers
The BCDEdit /set command sets a boot entry option value in the Windows boot configuration data store (BCD) for Windows.
learn.microsoft.com
To be able to do this, the secureboot has to be disabled beforehand
I have also acquired the developer liscense thanks to the help of
@jonnyprogamer at #19
I am not sure whether all the steps above will need to be achieved or not.
Now, we need to remove the signature file of the appx.
First, extract the appx/appxbundle to a working directory, then delete "AppxSignature.p7x".
open a new Powershell window to the working directory, then run the following command:
(I still use unpacker for example)
Add-AppxPackage -Register .\AppxManifest.xml
-Register must point to the path of the AppxManifest.xml
Have a read here: https://titleos.dev/bypassing-microsoft-store-licensing/
And voila!!!!
UPDATE:
with deleting the "AppxSignature.p7x". method, the app stop running after some time. I reinstall it and it can still run for some time.
Anyway, Thanks to @jonnyprogamer @camborita
Go with the method at #29 to test sign the appx and it will not have the issue that I had.
The solution is...Linux.

This is not the solution. After setup the app says that it cannot run because of the error and it has to be repaired. Only few apps have ability to display repair button. After clicking it nothing is getting repair. Also you cannot Update licenses in your Store account settings.
Setup without -Path command causes no "error badge" on apps list.
It worked before January 10'th. Now as above.
Still waiting for working solution...

The appx file is directly from the MS store, so I guess the problem is not really with the file, it might be more possible to do with the app license. if some surface RT still got the synced licences, i guess this might work for them?

Ok i tested it on my Windows 8.1 x64 installation and they still gave me a free developer license, and in fact i was able to sideload AccuWeather for Windows 8, and it doesn't show the "X" symbol (error) in the start screen anymore!
The app still won't launch, but i think it's because of missing dependencies.
Here is how to get a developer license:
1) Run PowerShell as Administrator
2) Type Show-WindowsDeveloperLicenseRegistration
3) Sign in with your MS account when asked, and it will give you the license immediately for free
So in theory i successfully installed an Appx (because i don't get the X showing up on the start screen), im gonna try to get the dependencies now, i attached a screenshot.
PS: I got the instructions from here: https://www.howtogeek.com/129535/how-to-sideload-modern-apps-on-windows-8/
I think we need to do some other stuff in order to successfully run the apps, probably the answer is in this document from MS:
