I have a epic touch 4g flashed to cricket and I was on wondering why I get 1x on custom ROMs but stock ROMs are just fine. And when I do get 3g the data acts weird and cuts on and off.

It might not be that you are even on 3G but sprint has this little habit of lying on their stock ROMs by making it so it always shows 3G even when connected to 1x. The devs on xda have made it so that in ROMs shows the true connection such 1x/3G.
A good way to verify while on stock is to go look on the about phone to see what you are connected to or use netmonitor/speedtest to see what connection you are on.

I had a ROM they showed real speeds and I was on 3g. The ROM was basically a slightly modified stock though....

another welcome to sprint thread.. my speeds are always at 1x no matter what rom/modem im on because of my area

Well first crickets 3g doesn't work very well on sprint phones, if you want real 3g you need a cricket phone or be on Sprint.
Data does work on touchwiz roms though, and if you want aosp you have to flash a fix to get it to work on those, but it won't be even close to 3g unless your lucky.
If you don't have the fix its here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1479175 use the ics one for ics and jb.
I've gotten 1.6 Mb/s download speed on aosp jb with Cricket, although average during the day is more like 800Kb/s. Area, PRL, signal strength, etc play a huge role as well.

I was wondering if anyone else has/had this problem. My evo tends to time out on 3g, especially when I download a rom. The 3g indicator just goes dark and will stay that way for a couple minutes. It wouldn't be a big problem but I don't have hi speed where I live so every Rom I download is through my phone internet. When the 3g times out it causes the Rom download to fail. Has anyone else had this problem and what can you do to fix it? It's irritating having to download a rom 5 plus times

This only happened to me when I was on stock. Now that I'm on a custom ROM, it doesn't happen anymore. I notice you are on a custom rom, so I'm sure that's not the problem.
It may be a coverage problem. It also happens to me when I'm switching from 3g to 1X, so that may be it.
The area I'm in has almost full signal. I've actually experienced this more on custom roms then when i was on stock.

Any update on this? Just was curious if this did the trick for you.

My 3g does not work on roms outside of stock sense roms. I've read where others says sense roms always show 3g even if you are getting a 1x signal but my wife has an evo 4g, unrooted, as well and my 1x is way slower then her 3g signal. I 1x signal won't load web pages in most cases. I downloaded the most recent OTA and then flashed a rom after words but still no 3g.

After I flashed the new radios etc. I tried to download a rom overnight. When I got up it said download failed, then I remembered to update prl and what not. After i updated things were ok until I tried out my 4G. I was having major issues with it not downloading. It was extremely slow. I was using the shooter ROM when these problems started so I flashed another ROM and haven't had any problems so far. Is it possible for a rom to affect 3g and 4G performance?

This isn't necessarily true. Most custom ROMs show 1x. However the stock does not. Also, 1x should be slower than 3g.

Sorry if I wasn't clear but that was my point. Thats what most people "say" about roms showing 1x and my 1x is slower then my wife 3g so I know its not that we don't have 3g in our area, its the rom. Right now I'm using R2R-green-R3, which has a 4g LTE icon and faster then the 1x rom I was using before. I flashed the honeycomb theme over it looks great and works great!

It shouldn't be the rom causing you to get 1x, have you tried updating prl/profile? I've run multiple custom roms and never had a problem. Areas where I know get 1x show it, but areas that get 3g show 3g and have 3g speeds
Sent from my PC36100 using xda premium
I did up date the prl/profile but still no 3g. I'm at 3g speed now so its not a problem. Maybe I did something wrong on the other rom?

a couple post down from yours http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1487126
I had a Epic 4g Touch too. The phone was awesome. I chose to go back to T-Mobile because of the data speeds in my area. Where I live there is no WiiMax and the 3g coverage is comparable to 56k. Even force roaming on Verizon towers didn't work (thinking maybe it is the modem issues that phone had when it was released).
You have to get used to the slower processor (which isn't that much of an issue) on the stock version. Custom Roms certainly alleviate that problem though. So to me it is clear. Much better data speeds and a slightly slower processor are way better than the faster processor and abysmal data speeds.
On a side note, it is a testament to Samsung how subscribers will switch carriers, and still go back to the same phone, even though it is a variant...
A good starter ROM is Juggernaut. Then from there if you want something way different, the purple people eater Tuesday From isn't a bad choice. If you want something stockish that gets consistant coverage, TDJ rom is the way to go.
I'm running the seanster latest and greatest..I always come back to it...for me its the most stable..coupled with faux clock the phone is crazy....an iPhone eater in my opinion..all of the roms out for this variant are good..2.3.5 or 2.3.6...experiment around and see what you like..

By the way......after you overclock you won't notice the differences in the chips..you can smooth out the UI ... definitely snappier than the epic touch 2 just not as smooth..

Find a jellybean radio and flash it, should fix your problem. There is a couple threads on radio's in development section.
Hi, I'm currently using a cm10 rom and I flashed the UVLH radio. JB works smoothly for me and calls are clear and messages arrive lromptly even. Maybe just flash a new radio one that's okay for ICS

There is NO JB radio. 3G and 4G are almost the same thing. I do not believe T-Mobile phones with 4G can acquire 4G, as our 4G is a fake 4G. It is more a 3.5G. So I believe that it is just that the system recognizes the signal as 3G, but is really 4G.

I have a T-Mobile GS3 and I'm rooted and getting amazing speeds on the T-Mobile network on the (Rooted) Stock Rom (Via Galaxy S3 Toolkit)
I was going to install AOKP and wanted to make sure that I would get the same speeds. Is there anything I should keep in mind before doing anything?
Thanks!
I've read that OC phones get a little better speed. I have never seen anything to support that though. If you use the same modem you shouldn't see a difference up or down.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda premium
@ OP...
your data speeds will not suffer from having a custom ROM. You should see the same speeds and connections in the same areas. As he^ mentioned, mostly depends on your radios and signal. Nothing more (for the most part)
My experience with AOKP has been always, no matter what phone, I get lower speeds than stock based. If you search you will find a lot of people complaining that their speeds dropped once they Flashed AOKP. I'm not sure if anyone has figured out why yet, it just seems to be one of the trade offs. Of course ymmv though.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda premium
At one point AOKP/AOSP ROMs could only get 10Mbps, now there is no difference. As others have said, you may find that one particular radio is better for you than another.
I'm an AOKP user and the highest I've gotten is 26Mbps.

Why is it that I only flip between 4G and Edge but have no 3G. Does anyone else have this or is it a t mobile network thing?

It depends...are you stock, rooted stock, or custom ROM? The reason I ask (regardless of settings) is I never got 3G on stock. After I rooted and used Kasper's AOKP nightlies my phone would use Edege, G, 3G, and 4G. Where I work the signal wasn't so good so locking onto 3G was tough but with the J4 and JA modems now I can consistently hold 3G with the AOKP ROM.
My opinion is to check for the newest modem which is JA (Jelly Bean update) if you are rooted and use that from the modem download thread here on XDA. If you aren't rooted wait for the upgrade and you will get that modem regardless.
However, AOKP ROM most likely works differently so you still might not see 3G if you are stock JB that's why I think we would needa bit more info.
I'm stock everything for a change lol. I also have the latest jelly bean update. I haven't seen 3G once on the phone since I've gotten it. It's really weird...
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
Your second guess is correct. Tmo is edge or a highly evolved version of 3g. It has nothing to do with stock vs rooted. The modem or kernel may help a little depending on what you are running. If you are in high speed 3g area aka 4G be happy.
Yeh it just gets annoying when I drop straight from 4G to Edge. :what:

T-Mobile uses HSPA+ for their current 4G network, which is just an extension of their 3G network. So, if you're on stock, it will jump from Edge to 4G, since T-Mobile's 3G and 4G are of the same technology.
When you're rooted, it will show 3G while your phone is at rest. As soon as "heavy" loads come in, it will shoot straight 4G. At times of very light loads, your phone might stay on 3G, but it's rare.
Bottom line, you're phone is perfectly fine when it jumps from 4G to Edge. Stock won't differentiate the two (3G&4G).
Well described... Thanks for clearing that up. Hopefully it helped some other people also.
