I have a T-Mobile GS3 and I'm rooted and getting amazing speeds on the T-Mobile network on the (Rooted) Stock Rom (Via Galaxy S3 Toolkit)
I was going to install AOKP and wanted to make sure that I would get the same speeds. Is there anything I should keep in mind before doing anything?
Thanks!
I've read that OC phones get a little better speed. I have never seen anything to support that though. If you use the same modem you shouldn't see a difference up or down.

@ OP...
your data speeds will not suffer from having a custom ROM. You should see the same speeds and connections in the same areas. As he^ mentioned, mostly depends on your radios and signal. Nothing more (for the most part)
My experience with AOKP has been always, no matter what phone, I get lower speeds than stock based. If you search you will find a lot of people complaining that their speeds dropped once they Flashed AOKP. I'm not sure if anyone has figured out why yet, it just seems to be one of the trade offs. Of course ymmv though.

At one point AOKP/AOSP ROMs could only get 10Mbps, now there is no difference. As others have said, you may find that one particular radio is better for you than another.
I'm an AOKP user and the highest I've gotten is 26Mbps.

Just updated OTA to ek02 and am experiencing slower 3g speeds... with and without the tweak. Anyone else noticing this or is it just me?

For me with update, 3g is same, but 4g is almost double.

If they get any slower they'll stop completely (at least for me).
Sprint is so slow anyway that o havent noticed anything yet

I really feel that i am having much slower 3g speeds.

I am really curious tho as to which modem is the best out of all of these

I'm experiencing slower speeds and my 4G connectivity got even worse...even did a profile and prl update after the update and it didn't help.

Sprint's 3G is stupid slow. It's completely unusable around here. For example, the Android Market. Most things say they are "starting to download" then they never do.
I did a speed test and my ping was like 900~1100+ with a download speed of 7~13kbps and an upload speed of 50~100kbps or so.
Seriously, 7~13kbps download?
The only reason I put up with this crap is I'm almost NEVER away from wireless. I work in the technologies field with full gig-network access on almost all the campuses I'm at threw out the day and 105mbit at home.

Wow, that is really slow. I don't have it that bad lol. But with that ping and those speeds, it seems like something is uploading constantly. That's the only time I've ever seen speed tests like that for me, while i was uploading songs to Google music. That's interesting.
As for the speed test tho, i feel there is an issue with the actually test and specifically our 3g. The reason i say this is because the speed test will give me a result of 40-50kB/s, but then i will download a torrent at like 150kB/s.... all in the same area. Very weird.

Sprints download speed for me is around .12kbs to .45kbs in good reception areas... in the same areas ATT gets 3.5mbs and Verizon is very stable with good reception and stable internet that is around 1.5 mbs... so ATT is wicked fast 3g but the reception and internet are both hit and miss as far as coverage goes. Where as Verizon may not be the fastest internet, they are well within my personal tolerance and needs... and their coverage surpasses ATT by a long haul in my area... notice i haven't mentioned sprint? That's because my download speeds on average are (like previously stated) between 10kbs and 50kbs at most! 50kbs is the fastest I've ever gotten with the speestest.net app! Don't even get me started on call reception.... I've honestly had more dropped calls in a month and a half then I've had with every other company combined throughout my life. End rant

So needless to say... no matter what modem u decide is he best, it will never actually please you or meet any sort of standard for you... i know it hasn't for me

a couple post down from yours http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1487126
I had a Epic 4g Touch too. The phone was awesome. I chose to go back to T-Mobile because of the data speeds in my area. Where I live there is no WiiMax and the 3g coverage is comparable to 56k. Even force roaming on Verizon towers didn't work (thinking maybe it is the modem issues that phone had when it was released).
You have to get used to the slower processor (which isn't that much of an issue) on the stock version. Custom Roms certainly alleviate that problem though. So to me it is clear. Much better data speeds and a slightly slower processor are way better than the faster processor and abysmal data speeds.
On a side note, it is a testament to Samsung how subscribers will switch carriers, and still go back to the same phone, even though it is a variant...
A good starter ROM is Juggernaut. Then from there if you want something way different, the purple people eater Tuesday From isn't a bad choice. If you want something stockish that gets consistant coverage, TDJ rom is the way to go.
I'm running the seanster latest and greatest..I always come back to it...for me its the most stable..coupled with faux clock the phone is crazy....an iPhone eater in my opinion..all of the roms out for this variant are good..2.3.5 or 2.3.6...experiment around and see what you like..

By the way......after you overclock you won't notice the differences in the chips..you can smooth out the UI ... definitely snappier than the epic touch 2 just not as smooth..

Anyone seeing a problem with data speeds dropping on 8-30-2012 Aokp JB rom on their AT&T Galaxy S3. Mine was 10mbps dn & 2mbps up...now its throttled at 4mbps & 1dn. Checked against my wifes GS3 & its still getting the 10mbps. Tried flashing back to LG1 modem but no luck??
Yeah I got it too. Wasn't sure if it was just my area that was sucking after Isaac hit us.

Yea i tried to go change mobile settings to lte but still had the drop occuring. Flashed back nandroid of Ultimatum 1.3 & all is fine again. Do you know where the latest on the 9.2.2012 task650 AOKP JB is ...was wondering if maybe this was resolved cause i sure love the speed & customization of his rom! JB Rockz!
During Isaac we lost data atleast 4x a day while I was on Aokp. I went to stock it was fine .

I don't know how it is for AT&T, but AOSP ROMs on the T-Mobile S3 cannot properly utilize HSPA+42 speeds either, so we have lower DL/UL speeds as well. Probably the case here.

Try toggling data roaming...go figure!
I have a epic touch 4g flashed to cricket and I was on wondering why I get 1x on custom ROMs but stock ROMs are just fine. And when I do get 3g the data acts weird and cuts on and off.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda app-developers app
It might not be that you are even on 3G but sprint has this little habit of lying on their stock ROMs by making it so it always shows 3G even when connected to 1x. The devs on xda have made it so that in ROMs shows the true connection such 1x/3G.
A good way to verify while on stock is to go look on the about phone to see what you are connected to or use netmonitor/speedtest to see what connection you are on.

Well first crickets 3g doesn't work very well on sprint phones, if you want real 3g you need a cricket phone or be on Sprint.
Data does work on touchwiz roms though, and if you want aosp you have to flash a fix to get it to work on those, but it won't be even close to 3g unless your lucky.
If you don't have the fix its here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1479175 use the ics one for ics and jb.
I've gotten 1.6 Mb/s download speed on aosp jb with Cricket, although average during the day is more like 800Kb/s. Area, PRL, signal strength, etc play a huge role as well.

Why is it that I only flip between 4G and Edge but have no 3G. Does anyone else have this or is it a t mobile network thing?

It depends...are you stock, rooted stock, or custom ROM? The reason I ask (regardless of settings) is I never got 3G on stock. After I rooted and used Kasper's AOKP nightlies my phone would use Edege, G, 3G, and 4G. Where I work the signal wasn't so good so locking onto 3G was tough but with the J4 and JA modems now I can consistently hold 3G with the AOKP ROM.
My opinion is to check for the newest modem which is JA (Jelly Bean update) if you are rooted and use that from the modem download thread here on XDA. If you aren't rooted wait for the upgrade and you will get that modem regardless.
However, AOKP ROM most likely works differently so you still might not see 3G if you are stock JB that's why I think we would needa bit more info.
I'm stock everything for a change lol. I also have the latest jelly bean update. I haven't seen 3G once on the phone since I've gotten it. It's really weird...

Your second guess is correct. Tmo is edge or a highly evolved version of 3g. It has nothing to do with stock vs rooted. The modem or kernel may help a little depending on what you are running. If you are in high speed 3g area aka 4G be happy.
Yeh it just gets annoying when I drop straight from 4G to Edge. :what:

T-Mobile uses HSPA+ for their current 4G network, which is just an extension of their 3G network. So, if you're on stock, it will jump from Edge to 4G, since T-Mobile's 3G and 4G are of the same technology.
When you're rooted, it will show 3G while your phone is at rest. As soon as "heavy" loads come in, it will shoot straight 4G. At times of very light loads, your phone might stay on 3G, but it's rare.
Bottom line, you're phone is perfectly fine when it jumps from 4G to Edge. Stock won't differentiate the two (3G&4G).
Well described... Thanks for clearing that up. Hopefully it helped some other people also.
