[Q] cdma to gsm - Xperia Play Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

i apologize for asking this question as i'm sure its been answered.
I am overseas and have a gsm xperia play. the screen cracked and has been starting to act up. a friend gave me his xperia play from the states thats a verizon cdma phone. i see that the cdma version has a slot for a sim card with a piece of plastic covering it. take of the plastic and its just like gsm version. is there any way to flash a rom/kernel that will allow the verizon phone to be used with a sim card? or a semi easy way of combining parts to make a good working gsm phone again. thanks for your help

No. This was discussed over a year ago. Yes the similar slot is still there buts its not connected hardware wise at all. You can put in a similar card and it don't see it. That is because the similar slot is physically not connected at all. Bummer news I know. I tried that myself over a year ago. Unfortunately its just notbpossible on the Verizon xperia play

[Q] whats it worth?

i just bought a desire locally. i called the woman to ask about it, she said it had a sim card slot and it does work with AT&T. i was excited because i have always wanted one, last time i tried trading for one the canadian post sent my phone back :/ anyway, the phone was dead, i charged it up and what do i see? the Alltel boot screen...i figured i cant use it but id like to play around with it, root it etc. my question is, when rooted, what would this specific model be worth? if i can make back my $100 ill be happy, thats really all i want...

Why can't you use it? What's Alltel?

yeah.. why don't you just debrand it and use it...

Alltel is a CDMA carrier. They were merged with Verizon within the last few years. Because it isnt a world phone it doesnt have a SIM slot, so in turn, its pretty useless to me.
Wouldn't it be easier to just pull the battery to see if there's a SIM card slot instead of all this stuff about carriers? You have the phone physically there in front of you, don't you?
Regarding what it's worth, I couldn't begin to tell you for a CDMA phone. Where I am in Europe, I've seen secondhand GSM Desires for sale from 50 to 500 euros.
The phone is in front of me, I have pulled the battery. It does indeed have no sim slot, if it did I probably would have already used it. All this stuff about carriers is exactly why I cannot use it, Im just simply trying to figure out whether or not I will be able to get my money for it considering I rarely see the CDMA model.
You should be able to make back the $100. Have a look on Ebay.

Unlock/Change carrier r800x

1. Do I need to unlock bootloader in order to unlock/change carrier of my r800x?
2. How do I check if my r800x has unlocked bootloader or not?

1. The R800x does not work on any other carrier than Verizon Wireless
2. If you dont know, then it is for sure locked.
I've seen at least one poster on this forum using an r800x on a smaller carrier.

It isn't possible because you can't put a sim card in the phone since it has no slot for it. also it is cdma and the other sim card play models are gsm. the r800x was built to stay on verizon wireless.

If you could do it right, you might be able to get it working on MetroPCS

Funny you mention that. There IS a Sim Card slot on the R800x. There's just a stupid piece of black plastic glued onto it. I peeled it off and found the Sim Card slot. If you want a pic I'l show you.
I just don't know if it works.
Xperia Play can be flashed to 'other' CDMA networks:
I've been using Verizon phones flashed to Cricket since 2007... including my current R800X! ;^ )
After paying $100+ to flash/activate my first xv6700 to Cricket, I have been doing it myself ever since...
My current R800X is 'fully flashed' to Cricket (including MMS functions),
and I have had 3. Here are the resources I've used:
*substitute . for (dot) w/ no spaces! LOL (sorry I'm noob)
Flash/Programming Tools (I had Droid Xs/X2 before the XPs, and these worked):

Well I'm using a r800x with other carrier in India. The reason I asked the question is because I bought the phone who had already did the job of changing the carrier and ofcourse he won't tell me how he did it. :banghead:
I have a R800x that i bought from C Spire(used to be Cellular South)

Thats a negative ghost rider!
It's CDMA. CDMA cannot be SIM-Unlocked/Network-Unlocked which you are looking for due to hardware limitations (as in the SIM slot being disabled).
I had an idea that 216monster was supposed to try, but I don't know if he eventually got around to it.
EDIT: Of course, that is only for GSM networks. I don't know about the process of going from a CDMA network to another CDMA network.

Gee .. kinda threw me under the bus on that one... your idea does involve slightly/potentially ruining my middle housing you know ...

Ok, yes the r800x (Verizon xperia play) can change carriers. But the carrier has to also work on a CDMA network. If it doesn't the phone wont work end of story. If the carrier is CDMA you will need to look up how to flash the phone to operate on there network. Some carriers will do this for you but MOST wont. Infact MOST will tell you you cant do it. From what I have read yes you will need to unlock your bootloader to change carriers.
Get the idea of a sim card out of your head now. The sim card slot is as real as the hidden hdmi port. IT DOESN'T EXIST! Unless you have one of the bata models which wouldn't be possible since there GSM phones.

You obviously have never opened your R800x. It is exactly where the SIM slot is on other models. EVERY. SINGLE. R800x. HAS. ONE.
@216monster , I didn't mean to throw you under the bus

I know , I couldn't help it, I love that saying! Plus I'm willing to potentially destroy something..except I believe I read the sim slot physically doesn't work, so it could be beyond your idea, which was still a good one IMo.

It may have the slot, but SIM cards won't work in it. GSM and CDMA are two different technologies. CDMA does not use SIM, and CDMA phones cannot use SIM cards. If you stuck a SIM in that tray, it wouldn't work.

Never said it would work. He was denying there is a sim card slot in the R800x (CDMA model). Hardware wise, it is disabled, but it's there physically.
I have one from Bluegrass Cellular. Does firmware for Verizon R800x will work (also, unlocked bootloader needed for ROM rom that I want)?

[Q] CDMA sim card slot enable?

I was just lurking around the forum and read that the sim card slot in the CMDA version is physically disconnected. I was wondering that couldn't it just be modded and reconnected to the board? Something like that wouldn't be beyond my ability, so I'm really interested in the prospect of doing so.

Sigh. . this again. This has been discussed a bajillion times. Just a friendly reminder that there is a search button. Anyways.... if I recalls there is no way to reconnect the sim card slot. And if I recall even if you could I thought I read somewhere that the CPU in our PLAYs is desinged for CDMA devices, still the same CPU as in the GSM model just a slightly different to work with CDMA frequencies...

I did use the search... but there wasn't anything on this topic specifically of reconnecting it.
But thanks for the info regardless.
I also found some pictures of the cdma board. from the looks of it, I'm assuming that there was no solder placed where the cpu would connect to the sim. But removing the heatshield, de-balling, and reballing seems like more effort than it may be worth.

Yeah I believe that was the conclusion from ages ago that it was simply not worth the attempt @ reconnecting the CPU to the SIM card. Sure would be nice to have it active but I do not think its feasible.
I came up with another theory. What if one of the little sockets on the board that the metal (on the housing) touches is jumping the sim slot?

There was a XDA member last summer that took photos of his phone completely taken apart as he attempted to get the sim card slot to work. I have not seen him since and if I recall he gave up on it after a few weeks of messing with it.
Here are all the SIM card threads I could find regarding activating the SIM slot on the R800x:

I know that sticking a verizon sim card in my r800x using CM9 did nothing .. until I removed it and got a msg on my lock screen that said "No Sim Card Inserted"..

GSM or CDMA? [SOLVED]

I got my phone from Koodo Mobile in Canada. I am assuming that since I use a SIM card that my phone is GSM? I just want to make sure I get the correct CM9 since this is my first time flashing a phone.
Yes, GSM uses SIM cards.
Read the flash instructions twice, then read them again.

Thanks. I will be reading them a million times and may write up something a little clearer from a newbie's perspective.
Still deciding on CM9 or CM10 but I'll likely take the former since I am assuming it is a little more stable.

[Q] HTC One V - Virgin Mobile to GSM by Hardware

hi i've recently bought this phone on eBay and i also found that the Sim Card slot it's sold separately this circuit board also includes the sd card slot and the antenna. This board is connected to the motherboard with a flex. So is it possible to make this phone gsm just by modifying the firmware???
Not entirely sure but without super cid you can't flash gsm ruus on CDMA and vice versa. That might be a problem but should be easy enough to get around with software mods.
It would probably just be easier to buy a gsm primo though. The case on our phones is easily damaged and not easy to repair.
Let us know your results if you try.
