Is any one brave enough to perform this mode on their new SGN II?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=32593285#post32593285
I believe the little metal shield near the microSD slot is Sprint SIM-chip - it in the same spot as SIM slot on other versions of SGN II and it looks similar to the one in the above Motorola phone.
There is a dual SIM adaptor for this phone here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1952770
so theoretically it could be used to split the connection with Sprint SIM-chip and another real full size SIM
I would love to see the same thing. I was thinking about moving to the Galaxy Note 2 until I read about the embedded SIM. I hope Sprint backs away from this trend or at least someone can hack the Note to allow for SIM switching.

If someone can show the pcb board I will start to see if the sim slot can be modded back on to the phone but its looking like i have to wait to get my own to see if i can mod it
internals taken with an S3 and shared via s-beam :good:

Some are slightly blurry but hope this helps, btw this thing comes apart just like the S2
Nice photos, can you make a video to show exactly where the sim card is and how it's embedded? Is it soldered or is it just built into the pcb board?

You will not see a real SIM card if that is what you expect yo see - It's an ASIC microchip.
the "SIM-chip" is clearly visible one of the posted pictures:
http://imageshack.us/a/img259/1346/20121030103716.jpg
It is right next to the white letters SPH-L900
And as you can see it is almost the same as in Motorola Photon phone in the original thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=32593285#post32593285
First picture on the right (also has 880120000 on top) - just a different version
That original thread has couple videos with removal procedure, it would be exactly the same here.
Darkendvoid88, Thank you for posting pictures!!!!!
Ah, thanks for the clarification. Very daunting but at least I know it's theoretically possible. If only this was more practical!
It appears that you'd have to have the phone taken apart just to use the foreign sim card, which is impractical. Maybe it could be stuffed below or above the battery, of course assuming the little wires could fit through some crevice or crack somewhere in the back. Otherwise, this type of hack basically just makes it possible to find your favorite foreign sim card, stick it in and close the device back up.
When I traveled around Germany and the UK this summer, it was super convenient to just switch to the new sim when I needed but I don't see that this will be possible even with this type of hack. Damn!
The op just has it set up like that because the photon is sealed and has a "non removeable" back. There is little to no room for the sim reader. An extended battery back might make this easier for us. Also if anyone has ever taken apart an S2 there is a clip next to the battery terminals. Ours is the same dissassembly process and that clip could be broken off to allow for easy wire routing.

Not too be noob-ish, but this is possible, right? Because if not I just wasted $300 :/

looks like the sim reader would go right in same place as the GSM sim version either trim the sprint case to model it the same as the GSM sim version or buy a GSM sim replacement case.

You can't simply replace the chip with SIM card slot. You will lose Sprint LTE. To make it right you's need to solder a dual SIM adapter instead of the chip, then solder chip back in to micro SIM slot of the adapter and use the regular SIM slot for other SIM you might want to use. The software that comes with an adaptor will help you switch between chip and the SIM

No u are exactly correct that chip controls sprint lte access but the good news is a secondary sim slot can be placed directly over it without much case modification you just have to wire it up and remove the metal block from the pcb cover Case also wireless charging is definitely in play due to the pcb is wired for it a lot of hardware modification promise

I am not a fan of the Iphone, but my wife has the 4s and I was able to call sprint to have them unlock the phone so we can use it overseas with another sim card. With that being said is the Iphone the only phone that has the slot to easily take out the card and replace it with another card if traveling overseas?
I wonder if the pcb boards or internals used in the Verizon version could be swapped out for Sprint? It would be pretty interesting if a Verizon version of this phone just required a transplant of the LTE sim chip.

Well, the GNII doesn't have that ability :/
The original Photon has a removable sim. Not sure about sprints unlocking policy on that device though.

I own this Photon and it worked well since it's unlocked for foreign sims but it won't see an update beyond 2.3 since Motorola won't upgrade it. GN2 is the phone I want to upgrade to but this embedded sim is my biggest problem with it.

Randy, Are you saying saying there is no need to remove the chip just solder wires from it's legs to SIM slot and switch with software?
Exactly someone would have to unlock it software wise but a simple soder hack and some super glue will allow it to be used directly on top of chip with wires straight to the right connections.. The chip cannot I repeat cannot be removed it manages the sprint frequency of lte and International roaming to remove it would take away ur ability to have lte but the positive is its not that locked down from what I'm hearing its a simple mod hardware wise. also the wireless hack is super super easy I don't understand why sprint left the tech for wireless charging in and routed correctly but removed the access to them. Go figure as soon as I get a device ill do some tinkering

I have to tear it down again tomorrow when I get to the store as I screwed up the rubber grommet that goes around the headphone jack (covering the hole atm). So if you guys need any more pictures of the chip / insides I'd be happy to oblige.
i apologize for asking this question as i'm sure its been answered.
I am overseas and have a gsm xperia play. the screen cracked and has been starting to act up. a friend gave me his xperia play from the states thats a verizon cdma phone. i see that the cdma version has a slot for a sim card with a piece of plastic covering it. take of the plastic and its just like gsm version. is there any way to flash a rom/kernel that will allow the verizon phone to be used with a sim card? or a semi easy way of combining parts to make a good working gsm phone again. thanks for your help
No. This was discussed over a year ago. Yes the similar slot is still there buts its not connected hardware wise at all. You can put in a similar card and it don't see it. That is because the similar slot is physically not connected at all. Bummer news I know. I tried that myself over a year ago. Unfortunately its just notbpossible on the Verizon xperia play

I just bought a used G2 for my son to be used as a wifi phone. I successively rooted and have Andromadus jellybelly on there. The phone was sold as unable to read the sim card, and I am wondering if there is a method to figure out if the reason is software related vs physical/hardware related? Any suggestions on what to try?
If it didn't work stock and still won't work after tooted and custom rom I doubt its software/firmware
So that leaves hardware, it seems the sim tray comes detatched from logic board on some of these, you can try and resolder the tray or pick up a new one. Possibly something else but it will be hard to determin other than trial and error

Look at the contact pins in the sim slot, make sure that they're straight and "up". If there are any that are bent over or not sticking up properly, those aren't making contact and therefore the sim won't work.
Long story short Wife dropped her HTC wildfire S ...1 month prior to 1yr anniversary of being with Virgin Canada..apparently phone falling from pocket and smashing screen is not covered even though we were within 1 yr warranty. Currently paying for a service and supertab phone that can't be used ( I let the wife use my phone with her sim most of the time ).
I went online and bought her an HTC One V through Virgin USA ( the guy said it took a sim ) and Virgin Canada said they would add it to her account if it had a sim .PERFECT ! .Today I got the phone and guess what ? NO SIM SLOT !! It's a GD CDMA phone. Good news Virgin Canada does support CDMA as well just not the EIMI number that goes with it and can't add it to the account! No I'm utterly pissed and lost
Fast forward tonight and I'm reading on flashing /unlocking etc only to come across swapping/adding you old phones esn /iemi to you new phone. Now I read briefly there is certain legality's but I know in Canada there is no such law when you own your devices the only thing it does is void warranty. No even if I can't be helped here ..I need 1 question answered if it is at possible to do so and I read it is. Yet can or does it matter that one phone is of different make One V compared to the Wildfire S and as long as they are the same branded phone ( HTC ) and would it matter that one is GSM and the other a CDMA ??
Gsm phones have to have the sim card to work on the correct network. As far as I know, your gsm carrier can't use a CDMA phone because the info can't be pushed.

I realize GSM phones have to have a sim card lol thats is a no brainer and not the issue and CDMA phones do work on all networks in Canada any phone that isn't a smart phone and older phone do not take sims and stil work fine on Bell/Virgin ......My issue is flashing my ESN on my broken phone to my new one that doesn't take a sim ...hence basically cloning it ....I know it can be done cause there is tutorials on it all over the web my thing is can you still do it if one phone is GSM and the other CDMA ? the only diff is the radio and no sim slot but as long as it works on the network ptting my briken GSM phones esn in my new CDMA phone should not be an issue. This issue ofr me is actually knowing how ?
You will have to look at qpst and dfs software. Needs to be rooted to get and change msl

Currently I have a i9250 and I broken one of the pins off the sim card reader.
I want to replace the motherboard by buying another phone with a cracked screen.
Is it possible that I can buy a Sprint/T-Mobile or i747 versions?
The reason I ask this is because they go on ebay for much less then the i9250s.
Thanks.

I doubt it as those carriers are CDMA, no? Maybe a broken toro would work but even then I'd have my doubts, I'd probably opt to de-solder/re-solder on a new sim card reader. Good luck.
No SIM card reader on the Sprint model

There must be repair shops with SIM slot replacement parts.
