GSM or CDMA? [SOLVED] - HTC One V

I got my phone from Koodo Mobile in Canada. I am assuming that since I use a SIM card that my phone is GSM? I just want to make sure I get the correct CM9 since this is my first time flashing a phone.

Yes, GSM uses SIM cards.
Read the flash instructions twice, then read them again.

Thanks. I will be reading them a million times and may write up something a little clearer from a newbie's perspective.
Still deciding on CM9 or CM10 but I'll likely take the former since I am assuming it is a little more stable.

[Q] Sim card on Telus Desire HD

One stupid question. Can I put a different Sim card in the Telus Desire HD out of the box? I will try to buy one directly from the Telus website, and I won't be using it in Canada, so do I need to activate it or something before I can use it with a different type of sim card?
It's amazing how hard it is to get a new phone with the right 3G bands!! In my country the only 3G bands available are 850/1900, just like AT&T, so the Desire HD will be the next best thing after the Nexus One.
Thanks for your help.
Yes, mine was bought unlocked, and works perfectly with At&t. Telus version, of course. I can answer any other questions you might have.
Thanks for your help. You got the AT&T 3G bands working then? And how did you get yours? Because the Telus website won't send phones outside Canada. Mabey Ebay is an option.
And also, I've heard that it's easy to root the phone using unrevoked, and maybe that way you can use some kind of flavor of Gingerbread. Maybe CM7.
Thanks for your help.
I got it from here: http://negrielectronics.com/htc-desire-hd-ace-sense-850-1900-3gblack-unlocked.html
I pre-ordered it Dec. 29th, and forgot about it completely. I was going to get the At&t version, but they sent a email saying it already shipped!
Either way, I haven't rooted it yet b/c people have been saying that they've lot sound with the s-off method. I probably will when more people are successful
Thank you. I will consider that site. And I agree with you, it's better to wait until the root process is reliable.
Thanks for your help.

About to get an Evo 4G. A few newb questions.

There is someone selling a barely used Evo4G for around $100 and I'd like to get it. I'm just concerned with rooting and custom Roms.
1.) How easy is it to root and install a custom rom?
2.) What is this GSM / CDMA thing? I'm a super newb so I'm not really sure what those are. How do I check if the network I'm using is GSM or CDMA?
3.) The seller says she got it from Dubai. Would there be different hardware versions of the device like some of the other phones with regional differences?
4.) What should I watch out for when installing custom ROMs? Like I know some roms for sprint wont work for verizon or something...

1. It's pretty easy to root but if your on the latest update which is 2.3.5 you have to use HTCdev.com or you can downgrade to to use another exploit like unrevoked it revolutionary.
2. GSM are phones that use SIM cards. CDMA are phones that do not use a SIM card.
3. Nope the evo4g was only available in the US. There are multiple hardware versions like 004. Only way it would be available there is if it was exported there and flashed to another carrier that met the requirements
4. Roms are device specific. You have to flash roms meant for your device. If you try and flash a rom from another phone you could brick your phone. There are some roms that are only for metro PCS users and boost mobile. Just don't flash those and you should be fine

+100 on this . Ciudado.
There are no GSM evos. And I have my doubts there are cdma networks in Dubai (or whatever middle eastern place the OP said, I forget the OP).
your cant put a rom for a Verizon phone on an Evo, unless somebody ports it for Evo.
Good luck. You're wise to ask your questions here, that was a good call

Yeah I'll check it out first and try to play with it before buying it but the phone part of it isnt really a big deal. I only have one sim card and I have my optimus one for that. I just wanted to check if it really is an Evo 4G.
I think that the main reason it is dirt cheap is that the owner doesnt know how about it being CDMA only and it is unusable for her here... I'll treat it as a a an entertainment device
The picture of the phone shows a Sprint logo on the back. So I will be flashing only Sprint specific roms right?

Every rom in the evo4g development section are Sprint specific except a few. You can only flash roms for your device not others. The evo4g is a Sprint phone every Evo4g has a Sprint logo even if its not on Sprint

Alright awesome. I'll probably put a custom rom on it right away. I'll check the phone out tomorrow so you guys will be seeing a lot of me
Would have wanted to try out a Sense rom but I've read that it's not compatible with bluetooth gaming controllers (wii remote or 6 axis controller) soI'll be looking for CM or AOSP roms.

[Q] cdma to gsm

i apologize for asking this question as i'm sure its been answered.
I am overseas and have a gsm xperia play. the screen cracked and has been starting to act up. a friend gave me his xperia play from the states thats a verizon cdma phone. i see that the cdma version has a slot for a sim card with a piece of plastic covering it. take of the plastic and its just like gsm version. is there any way to flash a rom/kernel that will allow the verizon phone to be used with a sim card? or a semi easy way of combining parts to make a good working gsm phone again. thanks for your help
No. This was discussed over a year ago. Yes the similar slot is still there buts its not connected hardware wise at all. You can put in a similar card and it don't see it. That is because the similar slot is physically not connected at all. Bummer news I know. I tried that myself over a year ago. Unfortunately its just notbpossible on the Verizon xperia play

[Q] How To Flash A US Cellular Galaxy S3 CDMA Phone (SCH-R530) to Straight Talk (GSM)

Despite a week long determination to seek out the answer on Google, I could not find a definitive guide or step by step process for flashing my US Cellular S3 phone to Straight Talk. I believe I titled this thread clearly enough so that when people arrive here they know exactly what to expect.
The only thing I have accomplished is that I have bought a T-Mobile Compatible Micro SIM Card.
Beyond that, I have no idea what to do next. I've read about flashing, and rooting, and custom ROMs and hidden menus, but I don't know where to start.
I have also read it can be done and it can't be done. However, through much research I am fairly sure this can be done. Will someone who knows how to do this keeping the 3G speed capability intact and all the features one would expect from their Galaxy S3 phone to have, please lay it out step by step for a scooby doobie noobie?
Much appreciated!
Use a ROM designed for your phone and pop the T-Mobile SIM in. You may have to add and APN, but that's probably as good as it gets.

I guess I don't know what to do first, Unlock, Flash, or Root my phone.
I honestly don't know if this will possibly work. CDMA and GSM are not exactly compatible. They are completely different cellular network technologies. Does yours even have a SIM card slot?
Try what aerowinder said, but dont expect much. And just fyi, for that model you should be in the Sprint forums I'm pretty sure. (Might be Verizon if I'm wrong, but I'm confident you need Sprints area)
You won't be able to flash anything in this forum without porting it first. Much easier to just use the correct forum.
Odin flash your recovery, then pick and flash your Rom. IF there's a free unlock method on yours, you'll probably need a stock based Rom to use it.
Good luck!

Brandy new

Just picked up one of these badboys this weekend at the target sale. It seemed like a decent deal considering tmo does not have the subsidized phones any more. As you can see my phone is the exhibit but is it possible to open it up and root the phone and flash it without a sim card? The micro SD cards I ordered from Tmo are still being shipped so a head start won't be that bad.. I read over the wiki stating the firmwares can only be t999L and nothing else and for the ROMs I may have to change or delete a few lines. Sorry for the wall of text just excited got a new toy and can't wait to play with it lol
TLDR; can I root and flash without a simcard

Alright well took a leap of faith and did it. It worked out fine. Followed DocHoliday's steps on installing Stock+Root through ODIN then installed twrp through ODIN as well. Right now i'm sitting at 4.1.2 Stock +Root UVAMB7. The only thing that I'm having a hard time grasping is the whole flashing of different roms(ive flashed roms on exhibit before but all had same i.e "t999")
Apparently the t999L can only be flashed with roms using UVAMB7 but I can't seem to find any.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
To answer the original question: Yes, you can flash without a SIM Inserted, it is actually safer to do it that way, but only just.
I also have the T999L and had the Galaxy Exhibit (formerly Exhibit II 4G), the thing to keep in mind is that though they are close they are not exact and keep to the ROMs/Modems/Firmware for your variant. Though with that being said, most of the T999 ROMs (NOT modems or firmware) will work without issue on the T999L and even the I747 (AT&T Variant). Most of the major differences, and bricking troubles, come from flashing the wrong Firmware or modems, either the wrong version or wrong device/variant. I am using d2tmo version of CM10.2.0 on my T999L, any of the d2tmo CM ROMs will work just fine.
