About to get an Evo 4G. A few newb questions. - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

There is someone selling a barely used Evo4G for around $100 and I'd like to get it. I'm just concerned with rooting and custom Roms.
1.) How easy is it to root and install a custom rom?
2.) What is this GSM / CDMA thing? I'm a super newb so I'm not really sure what those are. How do I check if the network I'm using is GSM or CDMA?
3.) The seller says she got it from Dubai. Would there be different hardware versions of the device like some of the other phones with regional differences?
4.) What should I watch out for when installing custom ROMs? Like I know some roms for sprint wont work for verizon or something...

1. It's pretty easy to root but if your on the latest update which is 2.3.5 you have to use HTCdev.com or you can downgrade to to use another exploit like unrevoked it revolutionary.
2. GSM are phones that use SIM cards. CDMA are phones that do not use a SIM card.
3. Nope the evo4g was only available in the US. There are multiple hardware versions like 004. Only way it would be available there is if it was exported there and flashed to another carrier that met the requirements
4. Roms are device specific. You have to flash roms meant for your device. If you try and flash a rom from another phone you could brick your phone. There are some roms that are only for metro PCS users and boost mobile. Just don't flash those and you should be fine

+100 on this . Ciudado.
There are no GSM evos. And I have my doubts there are cdma networks in Dubai (or whatever middle eastern place the OP said, I forget the OP).
your cant put a rom for a Verizon phone on an Evo, unless somebody ports it for Evo.
Good luck. You're wise to ask your questions here, that was a good call

Yeah I'll check it out first and try to play with it before buying it but the phone part of it isnt really a big deal. I only have one sim card and I have my optimus one for that. I just wanted to check if it really is an Evo 4G.
I think that the main reason it is dirt cheap is that the owner doesnt know how about it being CDMA only and it is unusable for her here... I'll treat it as a a an entertainment device
The picture of the phone shows a Sprint logo on the back. So I will be flashing only Sprint specific roms right?

Every rom in the evo4g development section are Sprint specific except a few. You can only flash roms for your device not others. The evo4g is a Sprint phone every Evo4g has a Sprint logo even if its not on Sprint

Alright awesome. I'll probably put a custom rom on it right away. I'll check the phone out tomorrow so you guys will be seeing a lot of me
Would have wanted to try out a Sense rom but I've read that it's not compatible with bluetooth gaming controllers (wii remote or 6 axis controller) soI'll be looking for CM or AOSP roms.

US Cellular Version

If no one hasnt read, US Cellular is finally get a variant to this phone, except they are calling it just Galaxy S2. Really contemplating on getting this phone, I just wanted to ask anyone who is knoweldgeable if I get this phone, can I root it and load CWM and stuff on it from your ROMS? or would I have to wait until one comes out specifically for my phone even though they are both CDMA and the specs are the same from what i see.

Its hard to say man without seeing the phone. There could be very minor differences that would not let a Rom be able to flash for that phone. It would be very easy for someone to port the Roms over especially since they are both CDMA

[Q] Using a T999 (Tmo) as a I747(AT&T)

I currently have a Galaxy S3, running rooted stock ICS for Tmobile - and I would like to switch over to ATT and keep the same phone, just flash the ATT JB stock firmware onto it (or a custom ROM), and whatever other flashes may be needed to make it work, or something along those lines. Is this even possible?
The only reason I would think it could work is that they are both GSM phones so the tech should essentially be the same right? And since it's rooted, switching the SIM shouldn't be an issue either, as I have done so when I am travelling.
Or are there other major diffs between the 2 s3's that I am missing which make this an impossible.
I have a friend who is looking to buy a new S3 from ATT, and I would just as soon sell him mine with their stock stuff on there if they are basically the same.
Many thanks in advance to any who can help shed light on this.
U have complete wrong idea brother. You cant just flash att s 3 rom on tmobile s 3.
Find some att based rom for tmobile s3 . i think we have some.
Its almost same hardware but not same network antenna. So you cant run att 4g on it.
Simply dont flash att rom on it unless its says for tmobile.

I always thought that Tmo (i was actually told this by tech support once) shares antennas/repeaters with ATT... so I guess they are just piping the 4G through a diff frequency or something, and the antenna isn't tuned to pick it up. damn.
are there any carriers it WILL work with?

The T999 supports at&t's 3G, just not their LTE (T999 doesn't support LTE period).
What was being told to you is don't flash an at&t baseband (radio), recovery, or full ROM to the phone or you risk a brick. Any of the ROMs marked *AROMA* have multi-carrier compatibility, you just choose the underlying device.

Sorry to say, but you are forgetting something, a stock rooted Tmobile Galaxy S3
is not compatible with the AT&T services as well as any of the AT&T roms.
You would need to UNLOCK the phone first before doing anything else.
Good Luck!

pardon my ignorance, but what is the diff between unlocking and rooting, and how can I go about doing it? Also, and this is an aside, the only way that i can find to change the IMEI of a T999 is by using an external box - there is no software-only method of doing this yet, correct?

To put it into simple terms,
Rooting a phone allows YOU to make changes to the phone which includes flashing roms as well as
allowing apps which require root access to work on your phone which are available at the play store.
But rooting has nothing to do with AT&T or any other carriers.
Unlocking a phone allows the phone to communicate with different carriers like AT&T and others.
Your phone does not need to be rooted to work with different carriers, it only needs to be Unlocked.
Also once the phone is unlocked you would need a AT&T Sim card for it to work.
Even an Unlocked Galaxy S3 will not work on AT&T unless you have a AT&T sim card.
There is absolutely no reason to change IMEI.
If you want to find out more about Unlocking, here is a link: https://www.google.com/search?q=unl...96,d.cGE&fp=db8d96ed93be75f0&biw=1017&bih=490

Good Luck with the phone.

This is what you need, a SIM Unlock - and it happens to be rather easy on the S3.

they are right. you need to unlock your phone. if you go into a store or call customer care they should be able to help you out with unlocking it. i used to work for tmobile and i remember unlocking a few peoples phones.

[Q] want to buy an Xperia Play and have a few questions

Hey guys,
I was curious if there was a particular model of XP I should get. Im not going to be using the XP as an actual phone but more as a mobile emulator/game station because I like the size and gaming features. I notice that theres a ATT and Verizon model, is one preferred over the other? And also are their and custom roms for people who dont plan to use this device as a phone? Like with the cell radios disabled and phone/text apps etc removed? Thanks!

The Verizon model is a CDMA version and does not use a SIM. ROM wise, I think CDMA models have different ROMS and GSM ROMS aren't compatible.
AT&T is a GSM model but they do not allow the bootloader to be unlocked, if I recall correctly.
You should probably get a R800i version if available. (Verizon's is R800x and AT&T's is R800at)
I have the At&t version, yes the bootloader is locked but testpoint unlock is easily possible. You can use flashmode for firmware and kernels but it has to be .ftf format. There are threads with many converted kernels and firmwares. I personally love having a sim card to switch between phones, and there is no shortage of GSM roms.

Thanks for the info. Ill def skip the CDMA model. Anyone know where I can get a decently priced international version?
ebay has them for $100-150ish. I know because I sold my international R800a for $100 bucks.

Asked for an AT&T HTC One, got a Verizon one, should I ask for a return?

Well the phone works on Indian GSM network, but this is a Verizon HTC One. Can I still flash WWE HTC One ROMs or am I screwed in that department?
EDIT: To clarify, I met a seller selling imported unlocked US HTC Ones, and said he would send me an AT&T One, but I got a VZW One instead.
Really?

well the vzw one definitely works fine on the indian gsm networks. if you want more options in terms of custom roms, yeah ask him for a return. it might be worth more hassle than it's worth though.
If you asked for an att phone then get what you want. Why settle for something you didn't ask for

You can run ViperOne on any HTC One, so i wouldn't worry about it. Plus Philz CWM Touch is available for m7vzw, and some great custom kernels.
Of course, you did ask for something and got something else, so in all rights you could ask for the correct one you ordered. I love my m7vzw though.
Edit - btw, "unlocked" htc ones are not exactly hard to come by. You can unlock any HTC One with Rumrunner as long as you do it before updating firmware. Takes a couple minutes, and you do not need to really know anything except how to install correct drivers on your pc and read.

Thanks, I'm thinking of keeping it since sending it back and forth would probably take a couple of weeks. Currently running a debloated stock Verizon KitKat with ElementalX kernel and it's working really well (of course, s-off'd and unlocked). This wasn't hard to come by on eBay, but it was the cheapest from a reputed seller, so I bought it as an upgrade from my N4.
PS: I really need to remove the stupid "x attempts remain before your data is deleted" security feature, this will be a gold mine for my friends if they see this. Any ideas on how I can do this without changing ROMs?

Just so you know, the Verizon One doesn't support 3G UMTS/HSPA+, as far as we know anyway, and is limited to a few 2G GSM bands. It's designed specifically for Verizon's CDMA + LTE network with a couple international bands thrown in for roaming purposes - not the best model to use all the time in another country. You really want the AT&T model for proper band support, unless you don't mind poor coverage in areas where your carrier uses other frequencies.
Yeah the one is capable of making global calls but not handling global data.

[Q] Switched carriers, ROM questions

So I recently switched from tmobile to at&t and I am able to use my new sim in the phone but I was wondering, do i still use the ROMs specific to this device or use the at&t ones? I figured I continue to use the tmobile ones becasue the device itself obviously didnt change but I just want to make sure something hardware wise doesnt mess up.
thanks
You can run both types of roms. You always could:

It seems you understand what I'm gonna say, but it's still worth mentioning again. Remember that in the end, the device is still a T-Mobile M919. What I mean by that is that when it comes to kernels and most importantly - Odin-flashable firmwares and modems, you must use files specifically for the T-Mobile S4.
