Brandy new - T-Mobile, Samsung Galaxy SIII

Just picked up one of these badboys this weekend at the target sale. It seemed like a decent deal considering tmo does not have the subsidized phones any more. As you can see my phone is the exhibit but is it possible to open it up and root the phone and flash it without a sim card? The micro SD cards I ordered from Tmo are still being shipped so a head start won't be that bad.. I read over the wiki stating the firmwares can only be t999L and nothing else and for the ROMs I may have to change or delete a few lines. Sorry for the wall of text just excited got a new toy and can't wait to play with it lol
TLDR; can I root and flash without a simcard

Alright well took a leap of faith and did it. It worked out fine. Followed DocHoliday's steps on installing Stock+Root through ODIN then installed twrp through ODIN as well. Right now i'm sitting at 4.1.2 Stock +Root UVAMB7. The only thing that I'm having a hard time grasping is the whole flashing of different roms(ive flashed roms on exhibit before but all had same i.e "t999")
Apparently the t999L can only be flashed with roms using UVAMB7 but I can't seem to find any.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

To answer the original question: Yes, you can flash without a SIM Inserted, it is actually safer to do it that way, but only just.
I also have the T999L and had the Galaxy Exhibit (formerly Exhibit II 4G), the thing to keep in mind is that though they are close they are not exact and keep to the ROMs/Modems/Firmware for your variant. Though with that being said, most of the T999 ROMs (NOT modems or firmware) will work without issue on the T999L and even the I747 (AT&T Variant). Most of the major differences, and bricking troubles, come from flashing the wrong Firmware or modems, either the wrong version or wrong device/variant. I am using d2tmo version of CM10.2.0 on my T999L, any of the d2tmo CM ROMs will work just fine.

[Q] Question about Flash Counter and Warranty

I recently attempted to root my SGS2 but I mistakenly installed firmware from the i9100 instead of the version I had, the SPH-D710, also known as the Epic Touch 4g. ( I was unaware there were three versions of the SGS2).
Odin failed, and all my subsequent efforts to flash proper firmware got as far as the LAST file (hidden.img) and then failed, too. I'm guessing it was a driver issue or a cable issue or something.
In desperation I started looking around the forums for any way to salvage this, and ended up going down a few fruitless tangents, but I did find out about the jig method of resetting the flash counter.
I booted into download mode and realized that the flash counter is actually zero - it says that I have an official binary loaded.
With that said, will Samsung / Sprint honor my warranty under these conditions? I have heard that people have gotten replacement phones even when they successfully flash custom firmware to their phones via the jig reset, so I'm feeling pretty confident they will.
Thanks for your help!

Worth noting its actually way beyond 3. i9100 international, then you have the Epic 4G Touch, AT&T has the Skyrocket and then they have another one that is just a GS2 but its not the international. Then you have T-Mobiles variant all of these so far are different phones. Canada has 3, Mexico has an LTE variant, The Caribbean and then I even heard Japan has one. Oh and dont let me forget about the 3 south korean ones. I thought it was just 4 at first.
Just do a warranty exchange at a sprint store say nothing and hope for the best.
So I'm in the clear? That's certainly a relief.

I wouldnt say that. Assuming nothing else appears out of place the warranty exchange may work just fine. Doesnt mean it will. Most of us running root phones with custom roms have a download screen that says exactly the same thing. When the phone turns on it says a whole different story. If the phone wont boot and nothing else is out of place you will probably get away with it. From the sound of it you have had a bit more luck than others though in trying to get the phone to normal.
Just remember in the future any phone sprint carries if its available on any other carrier its not the same phone. Sprint is the only CDMA carrier that uses WiMax and until the LTE switch they have no chance of carrying anywhere near compatible 4G hardware with Verizon. International phones are usually GSM/HSPA and the sort and the hardware is different.
It is a YMMV, but you have a good chance of being ok with normal techs. You could always run into the one stickler though and all bets are off.

Yes, this is my exact situation. My hopes are renewed.

No Service Issues!

Okay So a few months ago when I had the Note 2 after updaiting Offically to the newest firmware update which I think was January with the Baseband of I317UCAMA4 ever since I did that update my Note 2 had a signal loss issue. I would be connected to my tether, Phone NOT moving and suddenly I would go from all my bars of service to NO SERVICE with the cross at the top and wait about 30 seconds and everything back to normal and working it happens randomly throughout the day. Also it ONLY started happening AFTER I did the update, I called they sent a new one and i sold it to buy the xperia ZL. Well today bought one used on amazon I missed it, Well this one was already updated and its DOING the same exact thing! It happens everywhere I go! not just tethering and also happens in other states so its not a network issue.
Whats up with that and how do i fix?
back in febuary I even tried flashing an older modem/baseband which it did flash but the issue still occured.

NOPE. Happens on Both Wap.cingular and "phone" and "pta" which I switch between wap.cingular and phone mostly. Cause while im throttled with my unlimated plan wap.cingular makes it unthrottled haha.
But Same APN`s I use with NON AT&T Devices... Issue is not with data, Issue is with the actual service so APN has nothing to do with it
Happens on stock rom and custom. Just loaded an older modem and like my old note 2 after update still did NOT fix it.
I've taken the UCAMA4 update twice now, and have no data issues here. (Utah U.S.A)
Very odd that you have 2 devices in a row that have the problem.
Perhaps the next step would be to list each step you took to root the device, and also tell us what rom and other software you have used.
This may help us identify the cause. ...g

Well This issue was happening before I did ANYTHING what so ever. I always root and flash recovory via ODIN then flash the rom through CWM. But this was happening before I did anything.
On my Last note 2 everything worked fine did I did the update.
Do a sim swap and see if it resolved your issue.

User Error??? You gotta be kidding me? LMAO!
2 phones on stock nothing touched and causing it? user error?
Also I HAVE NOT tried a new sim yet. BUT the entire month I was using the ZL with the same sim did i EVER see an issue with data and signal never dropped service once.
How could it be the sim if it worked just fine in another phone with no problem?

Possibly. ..
With the ability to provision the SIM to the device, a new card or at least having the provision checked by the carrier may be a good idea.
Did they give you a new SIM with your 2nd device ??
If not, the issue would persist to the next device.
I recall a similar thread a few weeks ago, and the SIM was provisioned incorrectly. The user called the carrier and they had the wrong data setup.
It's worth a phone call, and a SIM. ...imho....g

I have a Regular Sized sim at home I`m gonna go get I can cut it myself I have a cutter and see what happens. I SHOULD be on the right data plan. It shows up a LTE Data Unlimited.
I have had the same sim since before I got the phone. But the odd thing is it does not happen on any other device. I`ll try it out when I get back in a few.
This info might help, Okay So I where I live service is weird, There is NO LTE here for about 30 miles but sometimes the other line here which is a Note 1 it will switch between LTE and 3G a lot but usually when it switched to LTE data wont work til it drops back down to 3G which is a pain (I think they are testing it here) well anyway I can go under the service menu and force it to LTE and sometimes data will work on LTE which is amazing for here haha) BUT when I force my Note 2 to LTE it just gets service but it will say Emerancy Calls Only any idea why mine says that and the other will work atleast half decent? and say AT&T? Does that help to add that? I went to Raleigh and Wilmington 2 months ago with my old Note 2 and LTE worked fine so I know I was provisioned for LTE and have an LTE sim cause it worked fine out that way.
Replaced Sim I had laying around brand new still having the same issue.
So what could be causing this? The Only thing I really did was go into the feild test menu to change it to UMTS only so it would stop switching, even setting it back to automatic its doing it. But I dont think that would make it do this

Sounds like the phone is doing the network bounce between 3g/LTE.
The device may simply not be capable of running properly between the bands.
Your condition is unique to be sure, and you likely need to involve the carrier in getting the problem rectified.
I honestly don't think you have a device problem, rather a network problem.
I hate to think the note2 isn't capable enough to overcome the network problems, but it is possible.
I'd call the carrier. ..and plead the case. ...g

Not sure if I posted in the first post but its NOT A CARRIER/NETWORK ISSUE
It happens in OTHER STATES 300 miles from where I am at now it still happens. and it ALSO happens sitting right NEXT to my AT&T MicroCell. and if it was a network issue it would affect ALL of my other devices ive had my sim in.
Also this issue ONLY happened after updating it to the latest modem
Then we need to be looking at modems.
The update killed the UCALJ2 files and gave you the UCAMA4 version.
Radio interface libraries keep the modem fed with the network information it needs to connect.
The search for the UCALJ2 files is on. ..
You can flash the RIL'S only and try the fix.
But you'll need root and custom recovery.
Let me look around for a bit. ..g

Well. ...nada..can't find stand alone RILS.
Right now. .the only RILS are inside of a stock ODIN build.
I guess a downgrade would get the service back, but you would lose multi-windows.
An ODIN downgrade would keep the phone stock, but I'm not sure about the flash counter.
Your thoughts? ?

Already tired on my old one and this one. Flashed STOCK 4.1.1 via odin and baseband is to the older one and still does not fix it.
On my old note 2 I had as SOON as I did the update the problem occurred during the same day after the update, But even flashing the older modem back NEVER fixed the issue.
I even tried it on this phone flashing an old modem still does not work. How come there is NO ODIN flashable modem? just CWM flashable modems?
I flashed the k7 one via CWM and no change. But I can not seem to find a flashable modem that works via ODIN.
also im not worried about keeping the phone stock, thats what triangle away is for.
We don't have Odin modems because they are pulled from roms and bundled into .zip format for easy use.
They can be made into .tar or .img format, but Odin is a pain as you need a PC. (Unless mobile Odin is used)...
I'm puzzled as too the reason for the failure, after running every possible fix.
I keep going back to the data package. ..as something is just not feeling right.
When I got this device, the carrier was having trouble getting my data package "fixed" as it had no LTE.
They fixed it once. ..and nothing. Then I called again and they fixed it again and it worked.
I'm not sure if there are levels of data they adjust, or how they "fix" it....but they do.
It appears that you have exhausted all possible fixes on your end, so perhaps a call is warranted?
The "weird" data issue on the network may be only the network.
Gotta get some sleep. ..g

[Q] Using a T999 (Tmo) as a I747(AT&T)

I currently have a Galaxy S3, running rooted stock ICS for Tmobile - and I would like to switch over to ATT and keep the same phone, just flash the ATT JB stock firmware onto it (or a custom ROM), and whatever other flashes may be needed to make it work, or something along those lines. Is this even possible?
The only reason I would think it could work is that they are both GSM phones so the tech should essentially be the same right? And since it's rooted, switching the SIM shouldn't be an issue either, as I have done so when I am travelling.
Or are there other major diffs between the 2 s3's that I am missing which make this an impossible.
I have a friend who is looking to buy a new S3 from ATT, and I would just as soon sell him mine with their stock stuff on there if they are basically the same.
Many thanks in advance to any who can help shed light on this.
U have complete wrong idea brother. You cant just flash att s 3 rom on tmobile s 3.
Find some att based rom for tmobile s3 . i think we have some.
Its almost same hardware but not same network antenna. So you cant run att 4g on it.
Simply dont flash att rom on it unless its says for tmobile.

I always thought that Tmo (i was actually told this by tech support once) shares antennas/repeaters with ATT... so I guess they are just piping the 4G through a diff frequency or something, and the antenna isn't tuned to pick it up. damn.
are there any carriers it WILL work with?

The T999 supports at&t's 3G, just not their LTE (T999 doesn't support LTE period).
What was being told to you is don't flash an at&t baseband (radio), recovery, or full ROM to the phone or you risk a brick. Any of the ROMs marked *AROMA* have multi-carrier compatibility, you just choose the underlying device.

Sorry to say, but you are forgetting something, a stock rooted Tmobile Galaxy S3
is not compatible with the AT&T services as well as any of the AT&T roms.
You would need to UNLOCK the phone first before doing anything else.

pardon my ignorance, but what is the diff between unlocking and rooting, and how can I go about doing it? Also, and this is an aside, the only way that i can find to change the IMEI of a T999 is by using an external box - there is no software-only method of doing this yet, correct?

To put it into simple terms,
Rooting a phone allows YOU to make changes to the phone which includes flashing roms as well as
allowing apps which require root access to work on your phone which are available at the play store.
But rooting has nothing to do with AT&T or any other carriers.
Unlocking a phone allows the phone to communicate with different carriers like AT&T and others.
Your phone does not need to be rooted to work with different carriers, it only needs to be Unlocked.
Also once the phone is unlocked you would need a AT&T Sim card for it to work.
Even an Unlocked Galaxy S3 will not work on AT&T unless you have a AT&T sim card.
There is absolutely no reason to change IMEI.
If you want to find out more about Unlocking, here is a link: https://www.google.com/search?q=unl...96,d.cGE&fp=db8d96ed93be75f0&biw=1017&bih=490

This is what you need, a SIM Unlock - and it happens to be rather easy on the S3.

[Q] Flash to t-mobile is it possible?

Hi guys,
this may not be the proper forum for this if it is not i apologize.
I have have the cricket galaxy S3 which I payed retail for a few months ago, I am moving to a area where they do not cover, I would like to bring my s3 over to tmobile but im running into a strange issue.
The phone is set to cdma mode in the the engineering menus i can switch it over to gsm and it has the frequencies that tmobile uses but i can not get it to see anyone else's sim card other then crickets, its not an unlock problem, it just says please insert sim with anyone else's, they do something weird they are cdma but have a sim card and the phone will not work without it. I tried installing a rom with the tmobile baseband as an experiment thinking well it may be that, but it didn't work.
I am having a hard time believing there is not a way to get this done so I am turning to the most informed android community I know of for advice, Dose anyone have any thoughts on how to accomplish this?
Please not I am not scared to brick this phone because if I cant get it switched over its a $500.00 paperweight to me anyway it has a cracked glass so I wouldn't be able to sell it anyway.
What model is it? I think cricket is closely related to sprint or verizon. And as far as I know no ones been able to use those models on the tmob or att networks with any success. Just because the option is in the engineering menus does not mean the phone is capable. It was just easier than creating separate apps for every model s3.
Now that T-Mobile has lte in some areas this may have changed a little, but in the past I know cdma phones were not compatible with T-Mobiles gsm network. So there may be a way IF lte is in your market, but I still wouldnt get my hopes up much.

See I looked at that but I couldnt get it to work with my phone, the part that is hanging me up is it refuses to see the gsm sim card, though outwardly they look identical to the lte card that is in my phone im thinking it has to do with the encoding on them.

I wouldn't try that again. Way too risky. Odin won't flash an official firmware to a different model device. But if you get it to it would be more likely to brick your phone than not. I know they're practically identical, but any difference in bootloaders could cause it.

well here is the thing, about the unlocked bit I am not sure, but it dose not prompt me for an unlock code, it simply just dose not see any other sim thats put in it, it just says No Sim. I gave up on flashing it with odin, I remembered the rom I was running had options for all major us carriers in it and cricket so i played around with that re-flashing the rom to it try a few things and well that didn't work either.
Well if you don't get it unlocked its probably not going to work with any other carriers network.

That thread may help. It's for gsm phones so I don't know if it'll do you any good, but it's worth a shot!
The Rom itself will have little to do with getting it working on another network. The main items that you probably need to worry about are unlocking and that SIM card.
The sim is tmob right? Does it work fine in other T-Mobile phones?
If you really do think.it's the Rom you may be able to flash a stock based Rom from the T999. Get verification first though as it's probably not like att where we can just flash theirs and it just works! You'd most likely need it ported.

[Q] firmware update problem country code

I just bought a phone on ebay. unlocked samsung galaxy s3 sgh-t999. It's supposed to be brand new and was in the orig. box. But the build of the firmware is ZS and in kies it says
PDA:EMC
PHONE: LK3
CSC: EMC (CHN) <- CHN I presume is China
also my android is 4.1.1 and I would like it to be at least 4.1.2 preferably 4.3
but of course OTA doesn't work because of the country code. It says registering device then processing failed.
I've tried to flash using odin but I get aboot error with some roms and in some versions as well as sbl2 error with some roms and some versions.
and my phone in download mode says it's an I747 -- the at&t model. In gs3->settings->about device it says its a sgh-t999 which is what it should be.
Kies says the firmware is up to date. arg frustrating.
Everything about this phone works except for updating the firmware.
So I asked for a replacement...which I got today. Same stupid problem, not only that, but this one isn't recognizing my cut micro sim. So if it's between the 2 I would like the original one since it recognizes the sim.
I have read that I can change the country code, but I do not want to root the phone since I want it under warranty.
what should I do to update my phone?
Thank you for any and all help
You might be another victim of Franken-Phone. Please see this thread. that person too got similar phone but from different source.
that thread and its discussion will help you figure out what to do.
If it says I747 on your Download screen then you have a i747 motherboard in a T999 body,
thread no longer there
hey thanks for the reply. The thread, unfortunately, doesn't seem to be there anymore.

My Bad. Thanks Doc for linking it.
Thanks, I sent the phones back
I sent the phones back. Cost me $12. I'm thinking of buying another one that claims it's not international....so I'm guessing its US firmware and hoping that it's legit. Thanks for your troubles. I did read the thread. It was a lot like my case except that his firmware had a region code UV and mine is ZS.

Please be aware that T999 does not have LTE antenna. So it won't get 4GLTE Speeds. So if you are buying, then consider the ATT SGH-I747 or the T-Mo SGH-T999L
Note that if you are with tmobile its best to get the T999L. The I747 does not have HSPA+42 if I remember right.

I ended up buying
I ended up buying one from an individual on ebay. I had him check the Settings->About Device and he told me it was a sgh-t999L with UV as its country code and android 4.3. So I bought it. He said it was a replacement from tmobile.
However, I'm reading that android 4.3 on the s3 has a problem with unstable network connections and pops up a message. According to a lot of people, this happens quite often for them. Any thoughts on this?
Thrres a wifi setting called auto switch networks that is probably the issue. Turn it off. Ive never had any connection issues on any build. Had the T999 since the beginning and have always loved it!
