I was a serious google fan, but the edges are starting to crack and it is slowly dawning on me that the innovative, fast moving company of the early 2000's is becoming a weighed down hegemony of bean counting MBA's who are starting to only get it right when they get lucky.
Exclusive on the most expensive carrier in the USA. The same carrier that replaced their search engine with Bing on 1/3 of their Android lineup. Not a word of it breathed at their week-late press conference. My own fault for getting my hopes up, I suppose.
I am due for a new phone around December/January and this will afford me the opportunity to take a good long look at what Windows phone has to offer before the Galaxy Nexus is even available to me.

Don't feel bad. Just remember one thing. Google is a business company. They don't care about me and you. They support whoever pay more. I am going to get SGS2 or HTC Amaze. I don't have a choice and can't wait longer than the end of nov which is my upgrade time.

And yes, if you were planning on getting the international one, i'm pretty sure it will still work on AT&T or T-Mo as long as the bands match up.

Well if they're pentaband then you could just buy the world phone model at full price and go. I think it only affects those looking to pick it up on a contract.
It is weird Verizon having a Nexus. Seem to clash together but my work has Verizon so why pay for a personal line?

Bet you when they are referring to the 'exclusive' Galaxy Nexus they are only talking about the LTE model and all the others will get the pentaband one at pretty much the same time.

I'm not gonna act like I'm not disappointed they have exclusively, especially since the other Nexus phones started as exclusive to one carrier as well. I wish they would just drop the whole exclusivity thing and make it available to everyone day one as exclusivity only really hurts the consumer. No way I'm switching to Verizon for this phone. I'll either import or wait for the GSM version to hit the US (if it's not that long of a wait). It's really bad for the phone's sales too considering in the world of smartphones, the next big release is always right around the corner and you will lose a lot of potential customers who will get something else because they don't feel like waiting anymore or something else hits the market. The average consumer doesn't know care about the Nexus brand, they care about new and noteworthy so why not try to rope them in while the iron is hot?

This, other than screen choices Hardware wasn't a big deal breaker for me. I want the AOSP feel. I came for a Samsung Infuse 4g. I was tired of waiting around for development. When I was shopping for a new phone I checked out phones the the AT&T GSII, Skyrocket, ect. Sure they had some development, but not too much. So instead of getting another phone where I'd be at the mercy of Samsung and AT&T to get Rom updates. So I made the best decision ever for a phone. I bought me a Galaxy Nexus. Now I don't think I will ever not own a Nexus series phone.
Since you stated you already have a Nexus S, I bet it will be hard for you to got to anything else that will be locked down and skinned. You will probably have withdraws pretty quickly.
In short, unless you are all about the latest and greatest hardware then get a GN, or wait a year for the next Nexus phone.

Yeah I remember when I had a Nexus One and left it for a HTC Sense Device. I mean the Hero and Evo had a lot of development but its nothing like having international users which means more development than just people who have ATT or sprint etc.

Future phones are always better, at least in terms of specs, so there's no end to the wait. Also, you could never have THE best phone.
PS. If you love the Nexus family then you will love GNex.

It really depends on you and your lifestyle. Like do you travel abroad a lot or do do you hate Verizon (lol)?
If you are in the country most of the time then I don't see why you would go through the trouble of getting an unlocked GSM GNex. They are essentially the same when it comes to end user experience.

I say get the GSM nexus.. well that's because I'm on ATT. And I travel a lot.. VZW pretty much a dead outside the States.. the only thing that sucks is no one sells accessories for the GSM version where I live .. and If it breaks or stop working att can't replace it

What device you get really depends on what you want. With the Galaxy Nexus the hardware might not be as good as other devices, it is miles ahead as far a software goes considering the open nature and dev support. If you don't plan on taking advantage of that and are more concerned with hardware, then get something else. I was tempted by the hardware and went to the G2x and then the GS2, I came back to the Nexus line. I missed the customization I had with my G1 and Nexus One.
While the Galaxy Nexus may be a little behind as far a hardware, but is by no means poor. But with the open software and available drivers, the software is way ahead of other phones.

well lets see the reason I'm debating about the two is this:
Verizon Nexus:
Pros: Service overall in Los Angeles is better. True LTE speeds. And 32gb built in versus the 16gb GSM version. Can get it for $100 on amazon.
Cons: stuck with Verizon and no chance of getting service outside of the US. Monthly bill would be $50 more expensive. And the whole android support issue about source?
GSM NEXUS:
Pros: can use on my $45 T-Mobile plan with 2gbs of data or switch to any GSM carrier I want. Development seems to not be stunted. Never had a problem with service.
CONS: $500 and no local hardware support in case of a problem. 16gb versus the 32gb version.
Lol I can't choose.

So if it costs $50 a month more on Verizon, with a minimum of 24 months is $1200, or $400 more once for the GSM. Not too tough a decision, though the 32GB would be nice.

I would say go with verizon, cause if anything does happen to the phone you'll be covered. The service is great waaaaay better than T-mobile, yea the bill will be a lil higher but you get what you pay for, dependable service. The thing about the support issue is irrelevant, the Nexus(GSM or CDMA) will still be waaaay ahead of any other phone and will continue to get updates rather is be OTA or here at XDA(the dev support on here don't seem like it will die down anytime soon, so you have nothing to worry about with this phone)

If I could go back 3-4 months (or whatever it was) I wouldn't buy a Gnex today. I'm a little disappointed in the lack of fixes from google. We've been officially on 4.0.2 for almost the whole time, while they seem to cater to carrier phones more (verizon gnex).
I see no point in getting a nexus if google puts their phone 2nd to carrier demands. verizon gnex gets fixes and more attention. At this point there are newer and better phones coming out, and the appeal of getting ICS first is over, especially when google doesn't release updates.

It's not like the GS3 won't see CM and a plethora of AOSP roms. How many non aosp roms do we have?
I'd wait for the gs3 at this stage of the game. They are talking about a simultaneous world wide release.
Verizon is about the same as sprint price wise. Assuming you aren't stupid enough to pay $20 for testing when you already pay for data. Use Google voice for texting and grove IP to stretch out your minutes. Add a corporate discount and it might be cheaper.
TMobile is a true value carrier but their service can get pretty ****ty.

It don't matter what phone you get.. You only going to be king of your neighborhood/office for only a couple of months.. Then the next big thing is coming.. Hell people already talking about a Galaxy Nexus 2. Thats the thing that sucks about android.. its never one good phone..
You can: Get a VZW Nexus on contract for 2 years and be stuck.. and then have to pay full retail for the next big thing. (Which already seem like the HTC One and GS3) BUT! No one knows if VZW is going to get the Galaxy Nexus 2. or any HTC One device or even a GS3.. And even when the GS3 come out you wont be able to get it on a carrier to probly 3 months after international release
Or you can: Get the GSM Nexus and always sell it in the next few weeks or month (Since the Galaxy Nexus resell value is about $450-$600 on ebay for a used one)
Plus you can get a Pre-paid carrier like Tmo as the other user said n have ****ty service... or just use ATT or rogers w/e you use and save yourself the upgrade fees and signing a new contract

correct buy gnexus already came out with a very outdated gpu. it's gonna feel like a dinosaur in a few months when the new generation of powervr come out.
I think OP should wait for a quad core phone with an updated gpu. it'll way more feature-proof than galaxy nexus.

The Galaxy Nexus will always be a great device to they release the next Nexus..because HTC sense will always suck.. (I don't believe those demos they showed ) and Touchwiz will always be late on updates from Samsung or lack support

[Q] What's your next phone?

So, I am currently in the market for a new phone because I am sick of how HTC treats their customers. I was wondering if you guys thought jumping on the Galaxy Nexus would still be a good idea even though the Sg3 is out.
The Sg3 looks amazing, but it is kind of out of my price range with the average price being $400. I have found a few Nexus' anywhere from $200-250 which is more my style. The thing that worries me though is that it is already close to a year old and I know the minute I purchase one the next greatest phone will be out.
Does anyone know when the next Nexus phone will be out? I am due for an upgrade around March, but would really like to jump to a 4g phone before then.
What do you guys think? Stay with the inc2, grab a Nexus, or just wait until I can get something with my upgrade?

I've had an upgrade since July I was going to get the sg3 but when I found out it was dual core it turned me off BC I was stoked for quad. Then I was going to get the inc4g, but I hate sense and I'm tired of HTC. I was close to getting the gnex on Saturday for $50 from best buy, but like you said its already a year old plus the 5mp camera is kinda iffy for me especially since the og Inc had an 8mp back in 2010! I'm going to wait for the galaxy note 2 coming out soon 1.6 quad core 2gigs ram super HD amoled running JB

I was considering a SG3 as well, or the GNEX, but I am currently satisfied with the Inc2 at the moment and will way my options when I am ready for a new device. I am curious if anyone has tested out any of these phones and had any opinions as well. I have not "upgraded" since they got away from unlimited data, so I am still grandfathered in and not sure if I will sign a new contract or just purchase the phone. The 4g is not a big issue with me as Big Red has not brought it to our area yet, and probably wont see it anytime soon.

Maybe I will wait for the Note 2 as well. My friend has the SG3 and the screen on it is beautiful. The one thing about the Note which I am unsure about is the stylus. I don't know how I feel about that. It's not like that is a big deal breaker for me, just something I'm unsure about. I have had 4g in my area since it has been released, for the most part, so I def want to go 4g. I am worried I will lose my unlimited, which is why I was starting to look for 4g now.
Samsung does make a great looking phone though. Colors are so vibrant on them. When the Note 2 comes out, is it supposed to be better than SG3 or is that phone still going to be considered the best?

It's not HTC's fault. They already gave the OTA to vzw a while ago. It's big red's fault for not releasing the goddamn update already because they need to bloat the **** out of it before they can be satisfied.

The stylus to me is just an accessory. You can function the phone without it. If I use my upgrade I will lose unlimited, but I'm only using 1.3 gigs a month. Not to mention my $200 phone bill and 2 unused phone lines. So upgrading will cancel unlimited data but I'll be saving $100+ dollars a month with my military discount. There's no real reason to use 4gig+ of data so I wouldn't worry about losing unlimited. Unlimited data users probably are getting throttled anyway. The note 2 is going to be a supercharged s3. Check out the specs on both http://www.autoomobile.com/news/samsung-galaxy-note-2-vs-s3-4/1003595/
My only problem is whether to stay on Verizon or not. The Verizon version of the note2 is going to have the Verizon brand on the home button! I can't believe that. I'm super satisfied with my inc2 only BC I rooted. But the lack of ota is troubling. This phone isn't that old

Do you know of a way to check the actual data usage without calling up Verizon? I also just did watch a few videos of the Note 2 being used and all I can say is WOW. This phone looks like it is going to be a pure beast. Also, you are right about the stylus being an accessory. After watching this video with it in use, I think I completely changed my opinion on it.

I only have 2 options for cellular service, Verizon or Cell One because I live in a small town. I have been with Verizon since probably 2004, switching from Sprint when I lived in Atlanta GA. I have never had an issue with them as far as service quality, prices are a bit high but I will pay for them as long as I have good service. As for the Inc 2 I will probably use it for another year or so before I consider switching, unless something happens to it before then. I have only been using mine for about 3 months or so and paid $75 for it from an acquaintance of mine that upgraded to the RazrMaxx.

I am from New Jersey love the service I get from Verizon. I have yet to go someplace that doesn't give me great service (unless I'm in a basement with no windows or something similar). As for other services, I have just about everything you can find in my area and from having friends I pretty much see everyone leave all other to come to Verizon. AT&T is the only one that can compete with Verizon in my area, but the only people I know that have that service is the Iphone users. For $75 you can't go wrong with this phone. It is def a great phone and aside from the lack of updates and no 4g that is my only complaint.

Verizon has it. How else would you guys have your ics leak . They have to perfect it though and make sure that there are no bugs. Also since it's an older device that not many people have, they are setting their focus on other phones.

I'm not too bothered by not getting the ICS OTA honestly. There are plenty of ICS ROMs that are functional enough for me to use. I'll just stick it out until I can upgrade in July, 2013 and either upgrade or switch carriers. Who knows what phones will be out by then?

Play store has a VZW app for usage.

I have a droid bionic just sittin here. I may use that, but with that remote phone wipe hack I may just forget about it.The hack doesn't seem to affect the INC2.

my upgrade isn't till may. Depending on the inc4g, i will purchase it if its s-off. Otherwise, I think i'll be getting the SGSIII. My next phone has to be unlocked someway.

I'm really diggin the xperia phones. And it looks like most of them are getting ics in the next couple weeks. The ion is free on the us sony site.

Sprint Finally Terminating me

After making my phone auto roam about 50% of the time over the course of a year. I finally got the we are terminating you letter today. In March of 2012 I got a warning letter, called them and explained that I get very spotty sprint coverage near my house and was told not to worry about it and that they would note on my account that a little extra roaming was ok. I guess they finally had enough of that. Can't really blame them, not mad at all, sometimes change is good, I'm kinda tired of relying on my airave at home.
The only carrier that has decent coverage here is Verizon, any suggestions on my new phone that I'll be picking up this weekend? I'm currently thinking either GS3 or Note II. Although I have never seen a note in person, if it looks too big to wear comfortably in my pocket that will be out.

I would say a gs3. The note #
2 is nice and all but it is a bit to big.

Congratulations. Many sprint users pray for that letter.
May not be possible for you to do but I'd try to go prepaid until the gs4 drops or see what's going to happen with the HTC m7.
Note 2 will probably have a better resell value if you're looking to get a new phone later this year

Definitly wait a bit if you can ... HTC Butterfly/Droid DNA, HTC m7 Sony Xperia Z/ZL, Samsung Galaxy SIV, or my favourite ( so far ) - LG Optimus G Pro! Last year phones are also gr8, but I'd force myself to wait a bit ...

I've been really happy with VZW except for their awesome update policy.
I would go for the note 2 personally because I run a business on the side and the spen would be amazing to have for credit card transactions. It's kinda large but still fits OK in pockets unless you're one of those hipster types in skinny jeans. My only gripe was that it's like holding a book up to your head.
We had an extra one on the corporate plan at work so I checked it out. Very nice, fast and OK battery life.

Prepaid, wait for the next nexus IMO. You will never have a better experience than with a nexus device.

I know what you mean about VZW being the only carrier with reception, that is how it is here too. I was in the VZW store this past weekend playing with the phones. I definitely like the Note 2. I understand not liking the larger screens if you have small hands or something, but I have large man sized hands. The phones are going to have to get bigger than 6" before I jump on the "too big" bandwagon.

You should pick up a Jitterbug if you can find it; otherwise the Sammy Galaxy SIII is pretty sweet.

Just get an iPhone 5 until the X Phone comes out, sell, then buy X phone.

Maybe a crazy thought, but since both sprint and Verizon are CDMA, is it possible to flash my sprint Gnex to be used on Verizon? Or even US Cellular. Both work good in my area.

I know people do that with phones that have a bad ESN, so I don't see why it wouldn't work...
I'd be the worst person to ask, though. I've never heard of someone flashing a phone with a clean ESN that came out of a contract cancellation.

I'm tempted to let my phone download a couple of gigs a night to make them term my contract.

S2 used value has turned into zilch

Just wanted to topic and get opinions on what people forsee the value of their epic touch as a used device or even still like New in box ...to me its discust to see what poeple would like to get and what people offer $cash wise.....for this device ...with generally seeing it around 150-180 used $people offer 80-100$ all day ..
Just a yr ago couldnt get one for under 350$ has the value really dropped,is it that crappy of a phone?

Well its now 2 generations behind. So yeah that factor comes into play a lot. Those upper end prices are usually only at those shoddy resale shops. For instance my aunt just bought the boost s2 for 350$ from this shop and it sucks. He sold it new when it was clearly used and the service is awful.
Sorry for going on a tangent. But yeah with the s4 now out, why would anyone want to buy an s2, even used. The only people I could see that would possibly want it now are developers for use as a dev phone.

It's not a crap phone, just dated. It was a great phone when it was introduced, but technology marches on. That's how it works with electronics.
It's competing against the s3, the note 2, and now the s4.
The good news is more devs can get their hands on the s2 for cheap money. They'll keep this phone fresh for a while longer for sure...

I disagree. The phone may be dated but it definitely holds up. If it wasn't worth the time then why is anyone doing development work with it? The S2 is a solid phone period. As far as Boost goes. It is OK for the money. It works for me.

This phone still holds its own very well. So does the Captivate and the HTC Inspire 4g, for a few examples. The EOL for Android phones that are set by the manufacturers and carriers mean nothing. EOL is what we make them as developers and power users.

I would have to say the person you sold it to paid too much. It should have been perfect with box, charger etc for that price. While these are still good phones being wimax is what really kills them. Lte is the only way to go if you are buying now.

I think my biggest issue with this phone is within the Sprint branding.
For whatever reason, they made it really hard on the devs. I'm thinking back to the emmc brick bug and the fact that we've never been officially supported by cm.
Otherwise it's a good phone, but those issues have been frustrating.
Might be picking up the S4 today. From what I hear, it's an awesome upgrade from this phone. It's fun to do upgrades every other generation.

People are beginning to wise up when it comes to phone purchases. You really can't do anything with a second hand epic touch other than put it back on sprint. At this point most people can get an s3 or better for free as an upgrade on a line so why buy an epic touch? A sim card phone for tmobile, simple mobile, straight talk etc is worth much more. The epic touch is basically a good but dead phone.

I doubt know if that's entirely true. There are a lot of people that like to buy from Craigslist or eBay, and this phone is a good deal. Plus, there will be the Virgin Mobile crowd as well.
I do agree though, if I had a low end phone and was looking to upgrade and had a little money to spend, I would at least look at the S3. But I know many people that don't even look at specs when buying smart phones. They just want to be able to use Facebook and track sports scores and not much else. I'm taking about the people that are completely happy with their Samsung Intercept. Lol!

I agree, it's a great phone to buy, it's just not a great phone to sell.

If someone w/o insurance trashes or loses their phone before they are upgrade-eligible, they're not going to want to pay full price for a new, non-subsidized phone. Used GSM phones tend saturate the market because they can be unlocked and used with any GSM carrier. CDMA phones, however, are restricted to a particular carrier's network, so used CDMA phones should have somewhat higher resale value.

Just the opposite actually, an unlocked gsm phone gives you options, a cdma phone gives you almost no options. You need that one sprint or ting buyer vs many tmobile, att, simple mobile etc, buyers.

its a great phone, and with options like Ting, boost, virgin, i'm sure there are others out there...
but in anycase these are value minded people and at least in the ting side of things, i see lots of people willing to root/rom/etc in their forums and help others do the same to get the most out of the phones.
i'll be here for a while, and i do want to learn on being a dev and this will be the phone i do it on, though i might pick up a second one that i can break

I hadn't thought of it that way. I took a quick look at swappa and couldn't easily tell who's right (it was a really quick look). I don't have anything to back up my position, so I'm just going to retract my statement and wonder about this.
