excuse, my english is very rusty.
I've IceColdSandwich v 8.6-AOKP on my DHD.
Unfortunately my Camera app doesn't work.
Because of that, I would update to v.8.8, but I've configured my home screen very good for me.
Therefore I want to keep this configuration. So, I don't wanna lose this configuration of the home screens.
Is it possible to jump to v8.8 without full wipe?
If so, what steps do I have to?

Yes, you can dirty flash the 8.8 ICECOLD. ("dirty" means without wipe.. so just flash.if you have a custom rom my guess is you know how to)
But I'd recommend to do a backup for any case. And than try to flash the 8.8. (again, I guess you know how, if not , ask.)
You can also perform a system backup with titanium\mybackup , but its not advices.
But again perform a NAND backup . If something will go wrong you'll have a working and configured version .

A NAND backup is performed from recovery and takes a single backup of the whole system. If something goes wrong, you can restore the NAND backup and you will be back to exactly the same point you were at when you took the backup. If you try 8.8 and it doesn't work, just restore the backup and you'll be back on 8.6.
A backup with titanium backs up apps and settings but runs from the ROM itself. If you are performing system changes then titanium may not be able to restore the necessary settings, so you may be stuck with the problem.
It means, that you should do a backup in your recovery. (You should always have one, because if something goes wrong, you can always restore this backup from your recovery).
I have used Titanium backup for a complete restore aswell.
But you should make sure, that your ROM is ok with this. ( I think there are ROMS, that don´t recommend this).
If you just switch the Version of the Rom, Titanium backup should work.
I did a complete wipe and restored with TB and it worked.

It might be, but NAND is for sure. and it brings your rom to the point as you left it.
1. go to recovery and do a backup.
2. dirty flash the 8.8 .
if everything all right your ok.
if anything going wrong at any point and you dont like it go to 3
3. flash the new rom with full wipe.
4.restore settings with titanium
everything ok ? huuura .somthing wrong ? go to 5
5.restore the back up.
Exactly.
It is saved in your Clockworkmod file on the SD.
You can simply choose it from your recovery and install it again. (You should also consider switching to 4ext recovery, but i think clockwork does the job as well)

but you dont need it. when you'll go to restore it from the same place in recovery, in any point it will show it as it is.
And it back up all the rom exactly as it is. 1 to 1.

I like 4ext more than CWM. You can install it by getting the app either from the 4ext site or buying it from the Play Store; the app lets you flash the recovery.
The backup is saved in the sdcard in the clockworkmod folder. I recommend, though, that you keep the backup. If you ever have problems with your current setup, you can restore it. I always back up before flashing anything.
I'm done and it all works wonderfully.
Also the camera works very well now.

Congratulations! Be aware that, as a courtesy to the developer, don't report bugs in a dirty flash; if you have bugs in a dirty flash, do a clean flash and see if the bug is there, and only if it is should you report the bug.

If your using Clockword mod recovery, then u can download rom manager and make a full back up of your current rom.
I'm assuming you already have root?
I am using 4EXT recovery I am just testing out the backup and restore at the moment to make sure it works but thanks for your advice, will try that if this method doesn't work

4EXT is highly thought of around here, I like using CWM as it's so easy to restore backups straight through rom manager.

I have kind of a serious issue right now. I used Touch Recovery 5.8.0.2 and made a full backup today of my whole ROM (2.5GB) before trying out some mods which eventually didn't work. So I decided to wipe and restore the backup I made. No matter what I do I cannot get it to restore my data partition properly. I keep getting "Error while restoring /data!" message, however it does the boot image and system fine but doesn't continue to cache and sd-ext because of the failed data. Whenever I boot it up, some of my apps are missing from the home screen and practically all of them are not working when I launch them (force close). I also get boot up error of Google+ force close, among a bunch of other issues. This is happening even when I try to restore an older backup as well. My device is not working state right now and although I can just restore the stock images to get it working again, it is urgent that I restore my data ASAP! I tried wiping several times and even using the non-touch 5.5.0.4 recovery to restore and same thing keeps happening.
Any help would be highly appreciated!

Update 1: Eventually I gave up and started from scratch but I have confirmed already this happened on a fresh backup as well, at this time we are trying to figure out what is causing this so I can go back to safely backing up and restoring backups.
Update 2: We have test builds of TWRP Recovery that may have resolved this issue! We need testers!

My phone did fine yesterday, I was running AOPK Milestone 3 with FAUX123 kernel.
But when I woke up, my phone looked like it's battery was emtpy.
- When I plugged the phone with the charger, I started the phone again.
- Unfortunately my phone keep looping at the Google screen over and over.
So I pulled the battery and put the battery back again in the phone.
- I went to the bootloader and went to CWM recovery.
Deleted Data, Cache and Dalvike cache.
- Tried to retrieve my backup rom, but keep getting this "Error while restoring /data!" message.
I've tried to install other roms as well, but I still keep getting the bootloop at the Google screen.
Have you guys have any advice for me?

For me, no, no (CWM Touch 5.8.0.2), yes (stock rooted 4.0.4), no but my goal is to restore my data not erase it.
I had this happen to me before, what I did was flash a factory image through fast boot and it was fine after.

Thanks guys..I flashed the factory image through Fastboot mode and the phone works perfectly again! Too bad I lost all my data, but I'm happier that I have my phone fully functional again

I did copy it. I have full access to the file. Also, just fyi my goal here is not just to get to working state (I'm aware of the stock images) but to actually recover my data. My phone is currently on stock images completely blank and working now.
Fast boot flash the nand images just like u did the stock ones.

Nanadroid files can be flashed in fastboot? Are you sure? First time I'm hearing this. Doesn't fastboot need .img files? These are .tar files.
Open it up and see if its image...sorry all my recoveries use images.

I guess it depends on the recovery version you use. I remember older versions actually had .img files. However 5.5.0.4 and Touch 5.8.0.2 both have ext4.tar files.
Which version of recovery do you use?
If you have root, you can restore your data partition using Titanium Backup. Use "Export from Nandroid Backup" within TB, select the nandroid backup and then select all apps that you want to restore

Yes. Titanium Backup can restore all your system apps as well as downloaded apps from a nandroid backup. Not as clean as a nandroid restore from CWM but essentially the same thing. But try to see if Titanium Backup can extract your nandroid backup. It all depends on what exactly went wrong with your nandroid backup to begin with. I don't think it restores cache. So not sure about wallpaper.

You're right. This works great for restore data to select apps (got my notes and game saves back). I think the icon layout is held in the launcher settings, I'm about to try and restore the data to the launcher app and see what happens. I'm making a CWM backup of first of my current state (that's assuming this backup will actually work).
EDIT: Yes! That did it! Widgets position weren't saved but it's ok I only had a few so I manually put them back. Thank you! I never knew TB had the ability to work with nandroid backups.
I guess this now just leaves me figuring out what went wrong with the CWM backup. It happened twice (I have two backups from the same day that won't restore). Does anyone else use CWM Touch 5.8.0.2 and have successful backups? I would experiment to see if it works now but I don't want to end up with a corrupt backup and redo everything again.
Yes with me its the same thing my data its corrupt is even worse every time I do a nanobackup and restarted my phone the phone freezes on the boot logo and I have to go back to recovery trying to use my backups but I can't so I have to flash a new from again and start from the beginning again!!!! Anybody here has the same experience with that ???
So AGAIN, I'm having the same issue. This time on a recovery 5.5.0.4 that used to work for me when I originally got my phone. I think either my data partition might be too big or something but this really needs to fixed pronto. Anyone know how to contact Koush directly in regards to this matter?

First sorry for my English so poor, it happens that my favorite language is not really speak Spanish. Anyway, that's beside the point.
I've always used Android Revolution HD, which is an amazing rom, but would like to try the CoreDroid v4.4 seeing ONE X has a very attractive graphical interface, and I wonder if I can just flash this rom without losing my applications, my games (and saved games) because when I change from one version of Android Revolution to a newer, I have no change in what I have on the phone.
Can I normally install without thorough cleaning (super wipe)?

It's highly recommended to do a full wipe before installing a new ROM - just make sure to backup everything you need before you do so. You can try installing it without a full wipe, but you'll have a greater chance of running into complications that way. All user files in your sdcard will not be touched during a super wipe.

Yeah, use that to backup your user applications and use 'Go Backup Pro' to backup contacts, call logs etc.
Make sure to make a nanodroid backup just in case something goes wrong or you want to go back to ARHD.

I tried to make a backup nanodroid having free 2gb sd card in my and in the process he told me he did not have enough space, I suppose it's very heavy. In which case you would use a backup nanodroid? And which option should I choose in Titanium Backup? Backup all user app + system data?

A nandroid backup is a full system backup: besides the andriod system itself it includes all your setting and all your apps (so: ARDH, setting and apps).
With a nandroid backup its very easy to go back to what you had; just restore the nandroid backup from within the recovery and your phone is back to exactly the way it was.
The only downside of a nandroid backup is the size, but then again, it needs to be because it includes everything!
I would recommend making some extra space on your phone and making the nandroid backup. This way, if Coredroid doesn't work for you, its very easy to go back to your ARHD.

just a heads up before you go and restore those apps: DONT DO IT!!!!!!!!
backing up is all good, i guess for the same rom at least. 9 times out of 10 restoring a backup, especially on the different rom, will completely bugger up the rom, and it will run like complete crap
just install the apps manually trust me - was rooting and custom romming my friends sensation a while ago, and he restored a backup, and it broke, so we had to wipe and reinstall the rom again to get it working properly
EDIT: definitely make the nandroid backup though.

Probably will bugger up the ROM if you try restore system apps. Didn't have any problems restoring all my user apps.

Every time I flash and update the ROM, I have to manually install my Google play apps because I do not want all the apps i have downloaded back on my phone. Also, I did not know if i could backup like Nova/message settings and apply the backup every time I flash a new ROM? Thanks, let me know!

ok so when u full wipe your phone and all that good stuff and you also backed up already flash your rom! then go back to the nandriod you just made and choose to restore data... BOOM! all your data/apps/messaging is still there!!
If your tooo lazy to do that use titanium backup search it on the playstore!

The system (as in operating system) files are stored in the /system directory, this includes apps that are packaged with whatever ROM you are flashing. The /data directory is only user installed apps and their data, either from the market or other sources. I simply use titanium backup on a daily schedule backup my apps and also manually export my sms messages before a wipe. I also keep a copy of the titanium apk on my sd so i can copy it over to the the new ROM after flashing but before rebooting using a recovery based file manager. This way i can full wipe, flash, reboot, restore backups from titanium and be back to where i left off in under 10 minutes. It is also wise to keep a recent full nandroid backup just incase anything goes wrong during the process.

If you are speaking of an app that is already installed on your phone then you can simply copy the .apk from the /data/app folder, unless it is a system app then it would be in /system/app.

When it restores DATA it restores data from apps/games/ whatever data you have i always do this and i have all my messages and games still in my new rom
You have to install clock work mod recovery. To boot into cwm, hold volume up + power + home button as you are powering on your phone.
From there, go to backup and restore > backup. This should create a full backup of your data (settings etc.) but not things on your sdcard like music or pictures. To restore after flashing, go to cwm recovery > backup and restore > advanced restore > select your backup you made > /data
On another note, what's the difference between wiping (/data, /system /cache) > flashing rom > advanced restore /data and just flashing the new rom on top of old rom? Does the new rom not delete/overwrite the old ROMs files? Also, can you just wipe /system /cache and flash new rom? Sorry for hijacking thread. Lol..

I'm trying to restore a nandroid backup I did with TWRP 2.3.3.0 but I'm not being successful and it's bothering me because now I have an unstable system and didn't really wanted to reinstall everything from scratch...
I don't understand what I'm doing wrong but after restoring the backup and rebooting the phone, I can boot but MOST of my apps are not "installed". Shortcuts I had on the home screen are there with their respective icons, I click on them and I get "Applications is not installed". Already tried that...
I updated to TWRP 2.5.0.0 and now I get "restore failed"... :'(
There's no way to get around this is there?
not sure if your recovery is corrupt, maybe worth making a titanium backup of apps and system data, flashing a new rom and then restoring via titanium?

Can I make a titanium backup out of the nandroid backup? Cause that's all I have right now, my current ROM is not even working properly... I'll have completely reinstall a new ROM.

what do you mean titanium backup out of the nandroid? normally the data backup should be there too...to be sure i always make tit backup's for my apps...

The only backup I have is a Nandroid backup and nothing else. I don't even have a running/working ROM at the moment.

Normally the nandroid backup should also save the data which means the apps and their data, hm.....due that it isn't working you have to install from beginning

It's your fault cuz the app data is not being restored , 1stly when you made the backup with TWPR you should've selected to backup the CACHE , you skipped that step since by default TWPR skips that step = no apps data anymore, tho there are shortcuts and in manage all apps you can see those apps installed but with grey collor like when being removed from lets say rom cleaner , theres still the APP IMAGE but not the app it'self , you could try this:
1. Flash old recovery ( the one you used to make the back up 2.3 or which ever you used ) . full wipe , restore nand backup ( don't forget to flash the boot.img in the bootloader if you used different kernel in that time or flash the modules via recovery for the kernel you use atm )
after you boot up re-download those apps that are there with shortcuts but not apps itself and hope for the saves from those apps to be there.
Next time if you don't wanna risk it you titanium back up and save the apps that matter to you , when restoring them back : download the app , go to titanium and restore only the DATA.
or simply check in TWPR when making nand backup to save the CACHE as well in the backup.
Yeah, I know it was my fault... I was at work doing other stuff at the same time and didn't focus on what I was actually doing with my phone and I messed up. I was used to an old recovery on my old phone where a nandroid backup would backup everything needed and didn't really look at the partition options.
I'm doing exactly what you mentioned and so far seems to be working. All the data seems to be there, I just have to reinstall all the apps...
One thing though, since the nandroid restore process didn't work correctly, I was left with a full /data partition and my phone started reporting "low storage" and didn't allow me to do install anything. I looked into the /data partition and found out that the folder lost+found was filling up the partition, I erased everything in it and restored 1.2Gb of free space. I can now install all my apps.

Your rom is ok but i think your sdcard were you install your app has been modified. Just do a factory reset and install apps again it happened to me too).

Flash the recovery from the backup and then try to restore nandroid and if you have empty spce in the name change with _
I have different problem about nandroid back up, everytime i transfer my back up to pc and back again to my phone, the custom recovery cannot detect my back up. What should i do?

Make sure you make no changes in the folder structure and folder naming. It has to be exact the same as it was.......and when you want to restore a nandroid you always flash the boot.img and recovery.img from the nandroid and then do the rest of the procedure

thanks! Thats what i'm doing wrong, i just transfer the folder were the files is locate, i ignore the twrp folder. Thanks again.
