I have an HTC TP2 from T-MObile, Windows mobile 6.1. My phone speaker no longer works. If I get a phone call I either have to put it on external speaker phone or plug in headphones to hear the other person. not looking to spend the money on a new phone. does anyone have any ideas how to fix this?
i have tried a soft and hard reset and have pulled the battery. but still no luck.
If a hard reset did not resolve the issue, and you are running stock software I would guess that it is a hardware issue. Specifically the speaker has failed, and you will need to replace/look for faults on the ribbon cable inside the lcd panel where the internal speaker is attached.

This. Unless you've done it before, you're likely to break something as well - taking apart a mobile phone (or rather the 'putting back together' part...) is NOT simple.

I bought a Touch Pro 2 off of craigslist and stupidly didn't make a call before buying it. I thought everything was good since the phone was brand new with all accessories unused. When I came home I noticed the sound didn't work and the headphones icon kept appearing on top of the screen. I hard reset the phone and it still doesnt work. Does anyone know what could cause this? I unlocked the phone before realizing this problem and the seller now tells me the unlock caused this which I don't believe.
Does the sound work through the headphones at least? Perhaps there's something stuck in the headphone jack or the miniusb port?
Things look rough for you, man...
When I plug in the headphones it works fine. It doesnt look like anything is damaged inside the USB input.
When I plug in the y cable the voice command comes on, is that normal?
No.
Somehow your TP2 is stuck in headset mode.
With a normal jack this was a minor issue, (toothpick in the hole to free the switch) but with the miniUSB it's a major issue.
What I mean: With a normal jackplug we could solve it, but now we can't, I'm affraid.
When a hard reset doesn't solve this, you've got a hardware problem.
I'm affraid you'll have to bring it to a service center
I would need help with my HTC s620. Sometimes the mic works perfectly, sometimes it does not, so people on the other end of the line can not hear me at all or just very-very low. I already tried changing regedit and also used the audio gain and microphone fix .cab files, but the basic problem remained: sometimes the mic works, sometimes not. I made soft reset / hard reset several times, still the problem remains. With my bluetooth headset I always have good voice quality even if the mic on the phone is not working. Altogether this drove me to the conclusion that I need to replace the microphone in my HTC s620.
On Ebay I can buy a new replacement microphone for a few $ but I don't know whether I would be able to replace it on my own. Anyone has any experience? Do I need any special tools for replacing the mic in my HTC s620? Can anyone provide me with a guide how to proceed? Any help is much appreciated.

There's a guide for taking apart your excalibur in the sticky, but honestly it doesn't specify how to change your mic but it will give a pretty good idea of what tools to use to open and re-assemble your dash.
Thanks for the response Mr. Clown. Indeed I would need a bit more specific info on how the MIC is attached to the phone and with what method it can be replaced. I read some forums on other type of phones where only the manufacturer is able to replace either the mic or the full board when it is impossible to replace the mic. As I mentioned earlier on Ebay there are two offers recently on OEM HTC mic for s620, however some forums also mention that even if a separate mic can be purchased, it does not guarantee that it can easily be replaced. Unfortunately I am not a tech expert, so I appreciate any guidance on this issue. Many thanks.
some possible solution
I searched a bit further on more general forums and it seems that I found the answer, so I post it here for others facing a similar problem.
It is not impossible but requires quite an experience and expertise to replace the microphone as it is soldered on the pcb. It needs high temparature heating and then the soldering of the new microphone. You can find new OEM microphones on Ebay (there are recently two offers: 3 - 6 USD price range + shipping), but you have to find someone who will replace the mic for you and who is experienced well and will not destroy your board with this procedure.
Here is a simple description of the process:
1. Set heater of your rework station between 400 to 417 degrees celcius, and air make the pointer of the air knob point aj 9 o'clock.
2. Select nozzle size that is not too big or too small for the mic.
3. Apply ample paste on the mic and direct the heat on it. Remove the mic with metal tweezers gently.
4. Apply paste to the interface of the mic to be soldered and then apply tiny solder on the pads to be soldered.
5. Place the mic correctly on the pcb and apply heat from the opposite side of the pcb, and remove the heat when the solder is melted.
Some have reported that this method really works, however I found no information whether it also works for the Excalibur as the interesting point is the exact place of the mic, so by heating it you will not damage other parts of the board.
I contacted the official HTC service and some other mobile experts, so I am looking for someone that can make the replacement for me... It is recommended that you also proceed similarly.
I hope this info will help.
If the mic sometimes works and other times not, why not trying to re-solder the contacts first? This is much easier than removing/replacing the microphone as you can apply the heat one contact after the other.
Dumb question: You are not covering the hole for the mic. with your fingers from time to time?
Thanks for the reply tobbie. I am surely not covering the mic with my finger or any other body parts ; ) So it must be the mic and not me causing the problem. For the time being I am still chasing someone experienced who could do the soldering for me... In the meanwhile I have flashed my ROM from 3VO.2.80.092509 to 3VO.3.50.033010, just to see whether this might be a software porblem. Flashing went well but problem remained. You are right pointing out that the MIC might be absolutely OK, as it sometimes functions well, and this might indicate that the problem is with the connection of the mic with the board and not the mic itself. However if I take the phone into pieces, then I would like to get it done, so I might still order this tiny mic on the internet. Out of curiosity: does anyone knows whether these mics are compatible with each other or not: I saw many Motorola (e.g.: V3) mics that look exactly as the HTC S620 mic, but I don't know whether they are really the identic.
For the time being I use my BT headset till I (hopefully) manage to solve this issue.
For a start, I would stay with HTC devices. All the older ones I have disassembled (typhoon, hurricane, tornado, excalibur, vox) share the same microphone (at least from the looks). Earpiece looks identical for all except the vox, ring-speaker looks identical for the 3 candy-bars while excalibur and vox seem to have the same as well.
Buying spare parts is usually more expensive than getting a used device with a broken screen or otherwise damaged. I have two definitely ruined boards (Tornado with a dead LCD interface + Hurricane with intermittent shut off) and some Typhoon parts that can not make a complete device.
Never soldered anything on the PBA - it is really delicate and if you spoil anything the board is gone. Possibly try to record something with the PBA accessible and apply some force to the mic while doing so. This should reveal if there is problem with soldering.
Many thanks for the help tobbie.
I will give a try and see how the mic would respond for such a "treatment". In the meanwhile I found a funny forum response from a guy who replaced a PCB soldered SonyEricsson W880 mic without a rework station, by just using a gas butane torch:
"I just managed to replace it. It wasn't so difficult.
First you have to unsolder the mic on the PCB (I used Gas Butane Torch from B&Q as I havn't got a Rework Station)
After that I found some old mic laying in my draw from samsung. I soldered it to the PCB using two thick copper wires
ps. If yo damage a track on the PCB you can solder a positive to the capacitor on the other side of the PCB."
Well it sounds a bit weird, anyway I would still go for an experienced expert with a rework station and proper equipment for replacement.
Danke und tschuss
Last night I dissambled my HTC s620 (it was a bit harder then I thought) and got to the mic, which is under a small rubber case, I cleaned a bit the surroundings, checked the contacts, but from the first sight everything seemed to be tight and fixed, still I pressed the mic a bit but no better mic functionality, actually now I can only here everything said in the mic very-very low and from last night there was no occasion when I could record with normal sound level. This might still indicate bad contact. Anyway, I will get now a replacmenet mic on Ebay and try to replace it. Will report whether it has really solved my problem.
The mic has the following numbers on it: S777 261, I don't know whether these types of mics are really compatible (I assume that they are - not only within the HTC brand but also with similar Motorola mics), anyway I will not go for a cheaper V3 mic but buy one which is advertised as an HTC S620 mic.
Same problem.
I've been using my excalibur for 2 weeks and, last night, in the middle of a call, my microphone stopped working. completely. does anybody have any idea of what i can do to solve this problem?!
please, i'm desperate.

You try to check the headset jack may be the cause of it
The last week I updated to [LEAK][ICS 4.0.3] Acer_AV041_A100_1.012.00_WW_GEN1 and the yesterday tonight doesnt recognize headphones. I did hard reset and nothing.
I'm guessing you get sound without headphones. Is this correct?
Do you have a bluetooth speaker, or headset you could try(or a friends)?
I'm unsure of what the issue with your sound is, BUT I think knowing those two things would help figure it out.
I would say if you get sound from the internal speakers, and from bluetooth, it could be a hardware issue with the headphone jack, or something similar. If you dont get sound in one or more of the other instances then it could indicate a software issue or another hardware component.
If the device is under waranty and it seems to be a hardware issue I would consider getting Acer to fix it. In which case you may want to downgrade back to stock before you ship it.
Hope this sound issue was just a temporary thing that is already resolved. Let us know what happens
I had this problem 2 months ago. After some software experimention I determined it was very likely to be hardware. I called Acer support and got an RMA. Just under two weeks from me dropping the unit off at Fedex to when it came back repaired. Work order in the box said IO card replaced. No problems since.
Same sound problem
I have a similar problem.
I have the latest available android installed on the Iconia a100 (Acer_AV041_A100?1.037.00_WW_GEN1, ICS 4.0.3)
and I had no problem with the headphone sound until last week. I have used it regularly, almost every other day.
Since then headphone icon does not show up when I connect it to the device. Sound is correct via the speakers but it is not an option on public transport.
I have tried several headphones, to switch the device on/off, to increase/decrease volume, to switch on with headphone plugged in but nothing happens.
I have checked the plug as far as I could: there is no dust or anything unusual in the hole.
I could continue with a factory reset (after archiving everything) but I am not very optimistic about that.
Is factory reset could help? Is it a hardware issue or am I missing something?
Thx.
So I bought this phone on ebay and it has the following problems
-No sound (Ringer, or earpiece)
-Microphone does not work
-Headphone jack does not work
So since the phone was so cheap $120, I decided to buy it. The hardware parts are cheap (no more than $20 all together) and is an easy fix but I would like to completely rule out that it is not a software problem.
What I have done so far
-Rooted the phone
-Factory reset
-Installed CWM
----and still it does not work.
**THE STORY**
The seller claims that the phone was thrown at him by his GF and that his otterbox saved the phone (mind you is in mint condition, REALLY GOOD OTTERBOX!) and after that it stopped working.
*MY SYNOPSIS*
-If the USB port works why isn't the microphone?(its the same flex cable)
-Headphones don't work, therefore earpiece won't work. Makes sense (same flex cable)
ANY HELP WOULD BE APPRECIATED!!! THANKS IN ADVANCED!!!
-Jean:laugh:
Even though they run on the same flex cable, the cable may not be the problem but rather the actual hardware of the microphone got damaged.
I'm not sure, but I would assume you could make sure it's not a software problem from the factory reset.

What the flex cable is connected to.
For example, imagine a light bulb being lit by a wire. The glass of the bulb then breaks breaking the actual light source, but the wire is still fine. Similarly the microphone could be problematic even though there's nothing wrong with the flex cable.
Just an idea.

Yeah I got you, bad news is now the USB port finished getting completely damaged as well lol. I guess it is a hardware problem. Its ok though easy fix. Should get it done in a couple hours but the thing is having the time to do it.... *sigh*
Thanks a lot!
Hardware
I bought this phone used and didn't find out until later that the headphone jack plays distorted music.
Here's an example. Everything else with the phone is fine. In this video I taped the headphones to the mics on my laptop.
[edit] crap, i'm a noob and can't post my youtube vid. This is the title of it if you want to hear an example:
Samsung Galaxy Note 2. Distorted audio via headphone jack.
Here's what I've done so far to try and solve it.
1. tried 5 different sets of headphones.
2. made sure they were properly seated in the jack.
3. cleaned out the jack for possible debris.
4. disassembled phone and replaced jack with a new part.
5. disassembled phone and cleaned the motherboard and all connections with Electronic cleaner and a toothbrush.
6. Reset phone
7. tried several different music players.
8. turned off WiFi, BT, put phone in Airplane mode.
9. altered all the sound settings I could find, surround, balance, boost, etc.
The water mark on the battery shows it got wet.
The water mark on the frame and speaker is missing.
The water mark on the motherboard is dry.
Also, I've used the iPhone for the last 5 years, so Android is new to me. BTW, except for this, I love the phone. I have thought this was a hardware problem, but before I give up I'd like to make sure this is not a software issue.
I finally resorted to the Reset, and I'm dealing with that right now. I also ordered a BT adapter so I can re-route everything through that. So I can play music in my truck.
Any advice or idea of where to go now would be welcome.
Thanks,
Kevin
I think the water indicator is your best clue that it's a hardware issue. I dunno how to test to isolate the component so you can try to fix it yourself though.
Out of curiosity, did the seller dispose that it was water damaged?

No, he did not disclose that it was water damaged. He also said that the headphones worked perfectly the last time he used it.
I find it funny that one of the screws was missing and the watermark was missing. Obviously someone had been in there and tried to fix it?
It doesn't matter, because I bought the phone and he's not going to take it back. Caveat Emptor. I didn't buy it at Best Buy, I bought it from some dude on Craigslist. I just got a $23 iKross device that will do both music and phone via a bluetooth adapter. I'm going to give up fighting it.
I thought I was going to be in the clear swapping out the headphone jack for $9. It was kind of fun taking apart the phone and checking out all the parts of it. This was kind of a forbidden activity with my iPhones, so it was interesting.
Thanks for your help, and Happy 4th of July!

Wow, that is quite impressive work....You deserve to have it work after you did all that.
It does sound like a hardware issue, but just out of curiosity, have you tried a different ROM?
Also if you have att, you could possibly do an insurance claim if it comes down to it.
I have the same prob. I took it to the Samsung repair center the guy quickly opened it , cleaned the audio jack... dint work, replaced the audio jack.. didnt work...
He mentioned sometimes connecting the jack to some other output devices like some amplifier or some sound system may have damaged the component/IC/Diode/resister/or whatever is responsible as the place where im am.. they have poor electrical earthing as the electricity standards are very poor and may have short circuited / excess electric current reached the phone and spoilt it
The solution >> Get a new motherboard !!! according to the Samsung engineer..if anyone has found a solution please share ! apart from changing a costly motherboard !

tighten all the screws!!
I had the same problem, i tried everything. Wiping, different rom, viper audio drivers...
Then i read in a comment on youtube to tighten the screws (especially the one between the camera en the led). Everything works now!
here another solution I found. I know this is a year old thread but it might help other people
I tried testing the earphone jack while the back housing is removed and while trying to figure out what causing it I found out that the ribbon is losing the connection to motherboard so I added another layer to the top of the ribbon connector to keep it in place and the sound distortion never happened again.
