I bought a Touch Pro 2 off of craigslist and stupidly didn't make a call before buying it. I thought everything was good since the phone was brand new with all accessories unused. When I came home I noticed the sound didn't work and the headphones icon kept appearing on top of the screen. I hard reset the phone and it still doesnt work. Does anyone know what could cause this? I unlocked the phone before realizing this problem and the seller now tells me the unlock caused this which I don't believe.
Does the sound work through the headphones at least? Perhaps there's something stuck in the headphone jack or the miniusb port?

When I plug in the headphones it works fine. It doesnt look like anything is damaged inside the USB input.
When I plug in the y cable the voice command comes on, is that normal?
No.
Somehow your TP2 is stuck in headset mode.
With a normal jack this was a minor issue, (toothpick in the hole to free the switch) but with the miniUSB it's a major issue.
What I mean: With a normal jackplug we could solve it, but now we can't, I'm affraid.
When a hard reset doesn't solve this, you've got a hardware problem.
I'm affraid you'll have to bring it to a service center

I was listening to music in my car today with my Sprint TP2 hooked up via the 3.5mm audio jack. When I disconnected the phone from the jack, the phone remained in 'headphone mode'. I knew it was in headphone mode still because it displays the little headphone icon on top and I could not hear any audio unless I reconnected the 3.5mm jack. So basically, I can't call anybody from my phone right now unless I hook it up to some speakers via the 3.5mm jack. That or use my BT headset.
Things I have tried to fix the phone;
- Unplugged and replugged in the 3.5mm stereo jack numerous times.*
- Soft reset
- Removed battery for 30 seconds and restarted
- Connected BlueTooth stereo headset and disconnected
* Extra weirdness; Gives me a voice commander error when I reconnect the jack. Voice Commander is not even enabled.
Nothing worked. So I just did a backup of my phone and I'm going to attempt a hard reset. We'll see if that fixes it.
Update: Right after I posted this thread, I tried plugging in several different devices with 3.5mm jacks and the headphone icon disappeared. However, I still did not have any audio. So I did a soft reset and surprise surprise... audio is back!!!
Anybody else encounter this bug? I'm not sure if it's a software or hardware bug, but it's definitely a bug.

sounds like a hardware issue? especially if the soft reset did not resolve the issue...

Sprint and Verizon versions of TP2 have a integrated 3.5mm jack.

I tried a soft reset with no luck so I was pretty sure it was something physically wrong. Instead of plugging my headset all the way back in and taking it out, I used the tip of the plug (like a Q-tip, 1/4 of the way in) to see if there were any sensors or metal still depressed and after a few light sweeps, the headset mode icon disappeared. Keeping my fingers crossed, I didn't use the 3.5mm jack for the rest of the night and I was able to use my headset and removed it without a problem this morning.
Ultimately this is most likely a physical issue, but I'd rather not send my phone in for a replacement (even though this would probably qualify as a manufacturer defect). Hope this helps if anyone experiences this in the future.

It is a hardware issue and is common to most 3.5mm jacks. I had also experienced this last year with my Treo Pro and since I really wanted to know the problem, I opened up my phone and voided all warranties. Inside the 3.5mm jack there's a lever type copper that bends to make contact with another copper metal, some kind of switch that's supposed to connect and disconnect the contact between these 2 metal pieces whenever a head 3.5mm plug is inserted.
What happened is when you disconnected the plug, the metal that's supposed to bend back to it's original position never did. That's why it's permanently stucked in headset mode because the phone thinks the plug is still inside. This probably happens due to age and possibly has something to do with moisture and rust, not to mention that copper is highly malleable.
Sad to say that until now this technology hasn't changed and is still being widely used. Hopefully someone will give this issue a real solution.

Does anyone know if a USB to 3.5mm headphone jack adapter works on the CDMA tp2? I'd really like to use regular headphones but don't want to jeopardize getting my phone stuck in headphone mode.

Yes, the USB headphone adapter works on the CDMA versions. If you plug in a second headphone set to the other open port, which ever one was connected lastly will be the one to have sound.
Fixed the problem!
I had to disassemble the phone, voiding the already expired warranty and solder the contacts together on the audio jack. I can't use a 3.5 mm jack anymore, but I can at least use the phone now without always using a bluetooth. I'll get a usb adapter for when I want to listen to music.
Here is a picture of the contacts I soldered. I used a 20 w soldering iron, I wouldn't use anything larger.

i would hate to do this on my vibrant lol, media sound recently gave out on me after unplugging the headphone. this sucks. id look around for replacement parts..til then.. gotta get busy with the q tips til i get it to work.

Yesterday I suddenly realized, that my ear piece speaker stopped working. First I thought it was just a little bug, solvable through re-trying to call or rebooting.
Nothing worked. Strangely enough going via the load speaker or the headset, everything sounds fine. Just the ear piece in the phone seems defect.
Then I found some weird diy solutions like using your headphone jack as a drill and pushing and pulling it in several ways or using a tooth-pick to scramble open some stuck switch. But honestly I don't know if this helps or breaks my headphone jack.
You guys have any idea how to solve this - don't want to send it in (wait weeks and get an lcd-desire back).

Just off the phone (no, not with my Desire) with HTC Customer Service, who have never heard of this issue and just recommend a hard-reset.
Still need to try the "jam the original headphones in and out"-solver tho.

The last week I updated to [LEAK][ICS 4.0.3] Acer_AV041_A100_1.012.00_WW_GEN1 and the yesterday tonight doesnt recognize headphones. I did hard reset and nothing.
I'm guessing you get sound without headphones. Is this correct?
Do you have a bluetooth speaker, or headset you could try(or a friends)?
I'm unsure of what the issue with your sound is, BUT I think knowing those two things would help figure it out.
I would say if you get sound from the internal speakers, and from bluetooth, it could be a hardware issue with the headphone jack, or something similar. If you dont get sound in one or more of the other instances then it could indicate a software issue or another hardware component.
If the device is under waranty and it seems to be a hardware issue I would consider getting Acer to fix it. In which case you may want to downgrade back to stock before you ship it.
Hope this sound issue was just a temporary thing that is already resolved. Let us know what happens
I had this problem 2 months ago. After some software experimention I determined it was very likely to be hardware. I called Acer support and got an RMA. Just under two weeks from me dropping the unit off at Fedex to when it came back repaired. Work order in the box said IO card replaced. No problems since.

I have a similar problem.
I have the latest available android installed on the Iconia a100 (Acer_AV041_A100?1.037.00_WW_GEN1, ICS 4.0.3)
and I had no problem with the headphone sound until last week. I have used it regularly, almost every other day.
Since then headphone icon does not show up when I connect it to the device. Sound is correct via the speakers but it is not an option on public transport.
I have tried several headphones, to switch the device on/off, to increase/decrease volume, to switch on with headphone plugged in but nothing happens.
I have checked the plug as far as I could: there is no dust or anything unusual in the hole.
I could continue with a factory reset (after archiving everything) but I am not very optimistic about that.
Is factory reset could help? Is it a hardware issue or am I missing something?

My Lumia 900 was working fine then all of a sudden it didn't make any sound even with volume 30/30. Looking back I believe it started after I disconnected a car audio cable. I eventually tried some headphones. I removed the headphones and again nothing. I also used an audio cable for my car. After removing it the built in speaker sound was back. I thought the phone was fine but a few days later the same thing happened again. I tried the car audio cable and the sound did not come back. I tried some headphones and the sound came back. Totally random and very annoying. Is anyone else experiencing this? I really don't want to exchange my phone.
If I exchange my phone do they wipe it while you are in the store?
Are you plugging/unplugging the cables/phones while music is playing? There is some kind of quirky circuit in WP that will pause/mute sound when you plug something in while playing. Have seen this happen on both my Surround and L900. Try plugging/unplugging when music is paused and see what happens. Also, if you are using any kind of case, make sure the audio jack is fully seated.

Alternatively, though, it could be a bad jack that makes only marginal physical contact when a plug is removed. If so, you have little to worry about with a warranty exchange. Just make sure you've sync'ed your phone to Zune on your PC, and your contacts/calendar to an Exchange or Windows Live account. You can wipe your phone yourself under Settings/About/More/Reset. About the only elements that won't be retained for a new phone once you've set up those Live and Exchange accounts are contact groups, settings, and old SMS messages.

Just wanted to know whether you managed to sort your problem out ?
Having the same problem on one day old lumia, but found that I press the edge of the glass between the windows logo and search button the sound returns.
I believe there is a loose connection at the bottom of the screen with regards to the sound speaker

Sorry. Swapped phones because of purple screen. Sound did come back. Not sure what actually worked.
My four day old Lumia did the same thing. I would press on the bottom of the phone and sound did come back while I was holding it. I slapped the back of the Lumia against my thigh (near the speaker) and sound came back. I am definitely taking it back soon.
I had the same problem w/my Lumia 900. I chopped off the end of a cotton swap (the kind with the paper shaft) and dipped it into some alcohol. I inserted the beheaded swab into the headphone jack and twisted it around slowly and eventually the speaker started working. I guess it though I still had headphones plugged into it and it muted the speakers.
bump. i'm having this same issue. Wish I would've read thsi before hand as the car headphone connector was in my friend's car. any more ways to work around this?
Just called AT&T...they're sending a replacement phone. It's frustrating though because I'm not sure if this is a hardware or software defect. I would hate if in a year when my warranty expires, I do the same thing on accident and can't get it replaced. I couldn't even receive calls with the phone after plugging it into the car audio. So hopefully this thread will be a good warning to anyone with a lumia not to plug it into the car stereo unless you want your speakers to blow.

I tried plugging in an aux cable last night, and I couldn't get it to go all the way in. If I pushed it hard enough, the sound would come through the speakers but as soon as I let go, it disconnected. I tried a few different pairs, and it seems there's something preventing the 3.5 mm jack from being inserted all the way. I tried it with and without my Rugged Armor case, too. Anyone else have this issue? Might have to take it in, but with the Pixel XL being in short supply I really don't want to go without a phone

It appears I am having the same, or nearly identical issue. I tried using my aux cord, as I normally do nearly every day, on Wednesday and it wasn't connecting properly, giving some weird feedback through the output (or no output at home) and thought it was an issue with the aux to cassette (very possible with the high use and mechanical failures).
At home I tried with headphones, and I could not get a full connection. The device stopped playback of the music as it always does when it detects some input, but there was no output, and at times google now would be activated or the volume down would be activated, but this headphone had no control on it whatsoever, so some sort of short/feedback was emulating a volume control.
Talking with project fi now about my options...still haven't sold my 6p yet so I could still use as a backup, but what a hassle...
I've never had this problem before. Could it be lint? I can't look inside and tell, and I don't have tweezers small enough to reach in.

If you take it into a bestbuy and go to the Samsung reps they'll take a look at it for you and tell you if there is lint or not and get it out for you I know that they're Samsung reps but they help with any Android device lol

No need, went to one of the phone service kiosks in the mall and they used tweezers to pull out a sh-t load of lint. Looked like a magic trick, neither of us could believe it.
Take a toothpick and press towards the bottom, if it's spongy, it's probably lint. Use a bright light to look inside.
A good sucking of the head jack should clear up any clogs..
I actually had the same problem (Pixel XL and I could not plug in my headphone jack all the way). I received the XL on 10/20, but had yet to use my headphones until this past weekend. It seems like this might be a common problem because when I called the Google Pixel Support, they immediately transferred me to Project Fi support and the girl I was speaking with immediately began the process of sending me a new phone (this was on Sunday 11/28). I received the new phone today (11/30) and everything works fine with the new phone and headphone jack.
I have this issue with the Google Pixel. I just got the device yesterday and when plugging it into aux cord in vehicle the sound was distorted. I tried the next time I got into car and it doesn't go in all the way. I went home and tried multiple pairs of headphones and they don't fit into headphone jack 100%. It goes in most of the way but stops at the top and doesn't hold in place. I called Google support and am waiting on a callback.
