[Q] How many cores? - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

n00b question!
My Note 2 only seems to have 3 cores (see pic)!
Am I missing something.. as I thought Quad Core meant 4!
Do I have a defective device?

It has 4...maybe you can try another app

My Kindle App first said there was three and so I tried 'Android System Info' App (free and gets good reviews on the Play Store) and as you can see from the screenshot it shows three...
Would you or some other Note 2 user please try that app and see what results you get.
I dont want a three-core quad phone!
Cheers

Thanks Dave,
System Tuner does indeed show 4 cores with varying levels of activity... This is quite reassuring but I still have the nagging concern why the other apps only show 3!?
I'll look into this a bit more and see if I get any further info / responses... it would still be interesting to see what other people get with the Android System info App!
[ASI is now showing 4 cores! Maybe if a core is idle it just doesn't show up!]

The cpu number starts at 0 and not with 1.
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda premium

All four cpu should show, but their level of activities might differ
One or two can even be idle sometimes.

2 cores offline for me, normal?

I think you miss the point! In the OP's screenshot, it shows CPUs 0, 2, and 3 - I.e. CPU 1 is missing.

Mine shows exactly the same info as yours with that android system app.
I actuality use the 'systempanel app / task manager' app from the play store and it shows the status of all four of my CPU.
You can try the free version of that app.

Jeez! Quadrant? The crappiest app of all. I'd not even bothered if it showed me -8 cores.

Isn't some of the RAM allocated to the GPU? The Adreno 220 might require more RAM relative to the Mali as doesn't the Mali have its own dedicated RAM?
Just wondering.
Here's my info

Mine also shows 784mb. I think its all that Tmobile bloatware. I hear most of them are installed as part of the system so they are all taking up that RAM. It should be around 830 shouldn't it? if root is available this should be fixed right?

Yes with root it will help bump up ram, but we will not get full access to the advertised 1gb of ram.

784 here too. On a side note, I found something running called "tethering manager" & "wi-fi sharing manager", so maybe they're whats stopping people from tethering freely.

Yes, your correct. Android OS is built to multitask so the system has many different apps running in the background at all times to help certain system apps to loud up immediately etc.

The international and AT&T's Galaxy SII don't have all that crap on their phone. Ours has so much bloatware that's using the RAM that's why we're at 784. If you remove all the crapware that T-mobile put you'll get 837 too.
Mine shows 1.932GB of system storage.

I know your "foreign" its okay I was just fooling with you. Too bad I didn't take french. All I know is Comme Tapelle tu? And I'm not even sure that's correct.
Anyways....
If you don't see a difference its probably not functioning correctly. If I remember correctly he removed the ability to shut off one core, he said that the kernel already shuts off one core when the screen shuts off.

He said it about generic hotplug and he disabled it.it is different thing when core shuts down in screen off and on.
If you use your phone minimally,so you may not need the second core and you can close it.but i prefer full speed all the time even scrolling around pages.
And you shouldn't talk about his english grammer, even you use you're and it's wrong, so for us,foreigners,it is normal to make mistakes

[APP] Serious Button Light Control[root]

Herro.
I made for you today, a nice nifty wittle app to better control your buttons lights. Simply set an ambient light value that you wish to have the lights come on. When you turn on your screen, the app will read the ambient light levels and compare it to what you have entered.
If the value that you entered is lower than the value being read, it will turn off the lights for you are in a bright enough area where they arent needed.
Once you go into a place that has a darker area where the light levels are lower than your entered level. They will come on for you and stay on until you turn off the screen.
Required:
1. YOU MUST HAVE ROOT
2. A beautiful Galaxy S 3 <3 (May work on other devices if the kernel supports is)
3. A finger which likes to click the like button. (not really)
Simply download attached apk to your phone and use any file manager to install it. Enjoy.

I know I had a couple as well.I think I need to bind the service to the activity to keep androids from destroying it.(That's what I believe is the issue) but you just have to restart it if it force closes.
It's definitely something with the screen monitoring service.I made one that just monitors screen of and on broadcasts and that one still force closes on me and there is nothing obvious in the logcat.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk 2
About the force closes, I've only had them happen right after waking my device. (And then it would crash again because android is trying to start it again) but I noticed it robot crashed on screen wake
Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk 2
On my device it FC's but it keeps working. It's odd but working fine besides that. It takes about a minute for it to take effect after I first draft the app.
I must say it does make my S3 look a lot sleeker with those lights off.
Thanks so much for it.

Yeah the app doesn't control the brightness of the button lights, it just shuts them off when you are in an area that is brighter then your entered value and turns them on again when you go to a dark area. No need to be sorry man!

Here's the basic rule of thumb. Anytime you get something online for free that usually costs money there is usually a virus involved.

Yeah who cares what app it is. An app in the market can bypass any checks they have to catch malware. So having a protection like this is worth having.

There are many apps in the market that require questionable permissions is my point. Regardless of what they are used for.
The permissions have to be agreed upon prior to downloading the app. All one has to do is pay attention when downloading. All the antivirus software is doing is comparing a set list of probable culprits of abuse of permissions and displaying those apps.
Sorry...I was merely pointing out these are not new "threats" ...the spam loaded app issue has been around for a while now. Games, wallpaper apps, etc. Just pay attention to what you are doing and downloading. It is extremely rare to come across an app that does not clearly list all of the permissions prior to downloading.
I myself use addons detector...it does not mislabel itself as "antivirus software" ...it simply looks for possible issues, points them out and gives you a choice on what to do.
I am not going to rip someone apart based on the app and what it is used for. It isn't worth the time.

I tried re-flashing that kernel, as well as tried the one for the E988- no luck. I even uninstalled all my apps and did a factory reset. Still my phone would not really enter a deep sleep.. (stats showed it would hit deep sleep for about 4 or 5 seconds every once and a while.)
Broke down and flashed the stock image that includes the recent value pack update from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2361928 and NOW it will deep sleep.
Re-rooted and ran freegee to get a recovery...
Not sure what it was that was killing it so I will re-install my apps 1 at a time and check...

Update: so there is definitely something about the Value Pack that is causing me some serious battery drainage. I just went back to stock and said screw it. Like it better anyway. Been sitting at 100% for the past 30 minutes while browsing Facebook. Did the same test before on the Value Pack update and I would drop to 97% within 15 minutes of taking it off the charger, and that's not even using it.
