Tether xbox/ps3? - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is there any way I can tether my epic to a xbox or ps3? I tried using wifi tether but it won't connect to xbox live. I googled it and saw that other people are using their android devices to do this but I don't know how. Any help? Thanks
P.S. I'm on CM10 (10/18 nightly)

Use the built in hotspot in cm10 and you should be fine... I used to tether my ps3 with cm9 using the built in hotspot, haven't tried on cm10, but it should work just fine...

You could also connect the WiFi on you phone to your laptop and make a bridge using a lan cable.

I help as many people as I can on here, but I draw the line with those who abuse the hacked hotspot feature for connecting gaming consoles. I think it's a morally gross over stepping of cellular data/network usage.
I 100% agree unlimited data means unlimited, but here you're talking about how you use your data. I'm sure others here will assist you, but I felt compelled to express my disgust for this thread's topic.

There are other reasons to tether the ps3 than to play games... like for bluray live and things of that nature... you shouldn't always assume the worst... now if he said, I want to play online games, I wouldn't have even answered...

Just wanted to let people know that the tethering included with CM10 worked flawlessly for both consoles. I didn't play any online with it, not even sure that you can with sprints 3g lol, but it updated both consoles just fine. Thank you very much to those who helped me.

USB 4G Tether

Wanted to share this with anyone who isn't aware. We can tether our ET4G on 4G but it requires USB and a 3rd party app. I tested it tonight with the free version of EasyTether and it works like a charm. Not personally interested in spending $10 for the full app but to some it may be worth it.
I haven't tested Klink but it's only $4 and it may work as well as a cheaper alternative.

Sweet, checking that out now. I see the free version doesn't allow https. I'll have to download the app to see how much the full version costs because I don't see it listed in the market.
To use these tethering method doesn't required the phone to be rooted, right? Also, will I be charged if I try to use it and can sprint figure out that I am tethering for free? I don't want to get a bill for hundreds or even thousands of dollars. How safe it is to tether undetected and are lots of people doing it for free with no penalty? I would like to tether for free but am just too afraid of getting caught and charged for it.
To be honest with you I used to have AT&T and now I have sprint and i've never once got a txt or anything in the mail telling me to stop. On AT&T I was running Cyanogen Mod and on my ET4G i'm running Calkulin's which has NoCIQ. If you aren't familiar with NoCIQ it basically makes it so sprint can't tell how your phone is using the data.
I wouldn't trust tethering if you're running a stock rom, even if the dev of the software says it's safe.

I think you might want to quantify your statement regarding NoCIQ. I've yet to see any published report from any reliable source showing it being used for data measurement. All a carrier has to do is look for unusual spikes in data volume.

I've had an android on sprint for almost 2 years now, always rooted, always tethering, always stock rom. Ciq still on there. They have never told me anything. And I always use 3rd party apps for tethering. I honestly don't think they know/care. At the end of the day, it works for the most of us, and we don't really abuse it; thus, they really shouldn't have a problem with it. They're bull**** hot spot app from sprint is ridiculously slow anyway. There's a huge difference in speed... its almost like they want us to find our own way of tethering lol.
That's my rationale and I'm sticking to it.

You may be right.. but they would have to prove what is using the data.. I have a torrent app on my phone I download stuff with and that uses a ton of data with out being tethered.

I've been using Wireless Tether for Root Users, it's free and works with 4G. I'm new to the 4G scene, having recently upgraded from a CDMA Hero but I've used it for years without problem. The only downside to it is it will read as an adhoc network.
I have no idea how the data looks to Sprint, I have yet to see them care.

to me if you tether a phone that often you will eventually see some problems from the hardware or the battery, even. do you not get interference when you receive a text or call? i know they run on a different spectrum but in my experience i've had a lot of interference when receiving a call.
again though, my main concern would be hardware damage.
That, or having your service terminated by sprint too. Sprints 4g isn't consistent enough to play any real time games with other people. You may think your fine... but people will curse you as you lag kill.

Last cycle I used my phone yo download and stream about 80 gigs of data unteathered and sprint called me and said I was in violation of the ToS so im getting wifi to use instead. But its just a tad annoying for a company to sell unlimited data and then limit the ammount you can use and still not be able to tell you how much is to much.

This gets "discussed" about every month, usually turns nasty and trollish. And I might even agree with you, to a point.
What it comes down to is the ToS does NOT allow for unlimited data via tethering.
And yes, if they GAF, they could very easily tell what device is consuming that data.

Help. Tmobile Galaxy S3 wifi tether not conecting with ipod.

Hello guys hope any body around here can give any idea how to solve this problem.
I have a root stock samsung galaxy s3 with tmobile with 2 year contract also unlimited data, but i dont want to pay for the wifi tether. my problem is when my daughter wants to connect her 4generation ipod with my phone she cant. i try every app on play store but nothing. What can i do. Also if i found one app that work and she see the wifi when she try to connect it said unable to join network.
Get wifi teather on the app market and go to setting and change the device profile to galaxy nexus gsm and should work fine write back of u got problems
P.s the thanks button dont hurt if u click it

Wifi tether creates an "ad hoc" connection. I doubt apple even knows what that is, let alone supports it. You're better off looking for a hack for the movie hot spot app. Gl

[Q] Tethering to PS3 does not work

So i have a T-Mobile GS3 and its rooted running Deviants Development Frosty Jelly bean. :good::good::good:
and i am using a moded app fo WifiTether. its called WifiTether_TrevE_Mod_11_22_2012.apk (Credit to the Techfanatic9 guy he showed me how to do it) the app runs great and actually i have no problem when i tether to my mac on my windows i had to download a firefox and chrome mod called used agent and change the setting to googlebot. then my internet worked perfectly. since i have T-Mobile i have unlimited 4g and that is great, because im am saving lots of money now that i have tethered rooting.
however when i try to plug it into my ps3 it does not work. at the beginning it did and then it stopped working. do you guys have any idea as to why and what can i do to fix this problem?
Some of these custom roms the devs make on here don't have tethering working i noticed too and the rom i would recomend for you which is guaranteed to have tethering working is the Xtremeperia rom for the galaxy s3 by Jovy in the android development section. I can totally understand your frustration where your other devices try to connect to your phone but they don't get anywhere. I have all you can eat true 4g from tmobile so i enjoy tethering.

Thats why. Its impossible to change a user agent on the PS3. You are completely out of luck with that plan. T-Mobile is blocking the PS3 UA.
Yea all you can eat 4g is hands down awesome. Nothing compares to it. Its even faster than the att uverse I had. Could you give me the link for that rom. I looked for it and could not find it. I want to test it out.

I've done the same.. I've tried VPN as well but no luck.. I've done it all. To setting APN app to system app, then deleting APN's and restoring from the given "T-Mobile APN" xml file thats here on XDA.. but still no luck.. I'm running T-Mo's Note 2.. Of course i can get the laptop/desktop's to work because of the UA but other than that no luck on my end...
Maybe a different VPN app? I'm thinking if theres a way to change the phone somehow, instead of messing with the PSN or PS3's UA... hmm..
I haven't confirmed the USB tether to computer with router fix yet.. Seeing as my phone won't turn on USB tethering for the life of it.. :/ I can flash DD-WRT to my router if it helps.. any suggestions?
EDIT: Also, I'm on the unlimited 4G plan as well. I've also changed ROM's and no luck.. Running Jedi X8, but going to try other ones that may work better with Tethering.. (I've also tried MIUI as well.. the most current one didn't have any luck either)

Unlimited tethering on s4 using slimbean

I have 3 lines, all with unlimited Internet but tmobil only allows 2.5gb of tethering. Currently using slimbean stable on my s4, how do I get unlimited tethering? I've tried Wify Tether app but it doesn't work.
I went into the apn settings and I see several options.

Have they actually capped you? I used over 30gb last month... with native tether.... Otherwise use the search function and report back.... I'd like to know the answer also but too lazy to look
I don't think any AOSP Roms have the data cap hack. Most of the TW Roms have the hack baked into the system. You may wanna try TW before going over your data limit. I have unlimited and use tethering all the time also I use the Wi-Fi tether app instead of the native hot spot.

So I am stuck @ 2.5gb? I called TMobil to increase my tethering, they said NO.
I see people all over the forums saying they have unlimited tethering by hiding their data usage and they always emphasize not to abuse it. I am giving tmobil a good large sum of money, 200 bucks.
So nobody knows of a unlimited tethering method?
Been looking around, according to some, Cyanogen should already come with the necessary coding to allow unlimited tethering but than again I am using SlimBean which I do not know if that has anything to do with it.

Again, unlimited tethering is impossible through "coding." It is handled by T-Mobile servers. A little Googling would tell you what you have to do however, I always thought if you paid 15 bucks extra each month they would include unlimited tethering?

But you were on the right track when you said "hiding their data usage." thats exactly what you need to do. And to add to your search terms, encrypt your data will hide the usage Go my young grasshoper, search and yee shall find

OK, I am an admitted noob to this site, just joined today in fact, but that is only because I have been trolling these forums looking for a clear answer to this issue for weeks now. I also have TM and am capped. I use my mobile hot spot to do my homework for the online school I attend. and recently switched from the big V to TM because of the cost, and now I'm screwed. I have searched so many forums and term strings it is not funny. I have tried vpn, hotspot shield, private internet access, and a host of wifi tether apps, and have not found a working combo. I have even tried modifying strings using SQLite. Most app combinations will not activate hotspot, and those that do cause laptop browser to redirect to t-mobile sale page. I will beat them... I will. But I joined xda for a little help, if you anyone does not wish to give the easy answer, I absolutely understand, just please direct me to the forum that has solved this as I am not "yet" a dev, but I'm getting there.
my config:
Model: SGH-M919
Android Version: 4.2.2
Baseband: M919uvuamdl
Kernal: 3.4.0-453951
[email protected]#1
Build: JDQ39.M919UVUAMDL
SELinux Status: Permissive
Rooted using ODIN because at the time I had read Odin was the only way.
Stock ROM

I have 3 lines, all with unlimited Internet but tmobil only allows 2.5gb of tethering. Currently using slimbean stable on my s4, how do I get unlimited tethering? I've tried Wify Tether app but it doesn't work.
I went into the apn settings and I see several options.
Any advice would be appreciative. Spent an hour trying to figure this out :/

Using native tethering you get to share as much as you want what T-Mobile gets is that you used internet in your phone when in reality you were tethering I got like 60 GB each month most is by tethering

I've found that when I search and search and can't find something, it's because it was so fundamental a feature that it is automatically assumed people know how to use it.
What evidence do you have that T-Mobile is blocking your tethering after 2.5gb? Others have asked but it doesn't seem like that question has been answered. I have CM11 and have tethered like a fiend using the ROM's built-in hotspot feature, which the stock T-Mobile Account app doesn't even pick up on. Additionally I've been told that after 2.5gb, they don't block you, just throttle your speed down.

I use User Agent Switcher addon for firefox and choose Googlebot under Search Robots. I never get throttled using this method, although some site are wonky like netflix.
Well, apparently I did not try enough software combinations. I have finally got it working using Hotspot Shield free, paired with WiFi Tether Router. My GS4 is only about 3 weeks old, so this is likely the newest solution.

Lol, im trying to teach you the wonderous magic of searching It seriously helps A LOT. I hardly post any threads asking for this that and the other thing because i always find it by searching. Looks like all I need to do is installed an agent switches extension on either chrome or firefox. That correct?

Yeah Im still confused as well and I have also done a lot of research on the topic over the past few months.
Running AOSP, can we just use the native tethering (works great for me but then again i believe im still within the 2.5 gb of allotted tethering) or do we need to use the user agent switcher method?
Well since you guys are on the right track
You have a couple options:
1. (Prolly the best) Purchase or use a free VPN client ON YOUR DEVICE to encrypt ALL your data, now T-Mobile can't detect what the data is, its just data.
2. Use a User Agent switcher to change your user agent so it looks like the data is coming from a mobile device instead of a computer.
I wanna tether to my Ps3, I would like to know if it is possible to hide tethering as well. Tmobile is capped at 2.5, I found a way to do it on my Note 3, but my Ps3 wont connect that way, it only sees my S4, but like I said, its reached its cap limit.

I've always used wifi tether from here http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list you just have to chose the right settings and it works perfectly. I use it on my 360 all the time.
