[Q] Noob Tutorial for CM update + rooting / scared of brick - Samsung Captivate Glide

I want to update to the JB/ICS Cyanogenmod rom released in the development section. But I'm afraid of bricking my phone. The glide is my first contract phone with AT&T, and I don't want to end up bricking-beyond-fixing.
I used to own a Huwaei Ascend from Cricket Mobile and rooted/flashed it to Cyanogenmod and wasn't that afraid because I knew back then how to do everything I wanted and how it worked. But..with this being my first contract phone, I'm quite scared to void my warranty and if there's any way to reverse the root/rom flashing back to stock if something were to happen with the phone.
Please help quell my fears and help me make my Glide amazing?
Thank you so much!

You don't have to worry! As long as you can reboot to download mode, you can unbrick your phone.
Just be prepared with a stock ICS ROM, what you can flash via Odin.

So, the Odin that nearly everyone says to use is what I need to get and understand. And make sure that I get the stock ICS to flash.
And, download mode is that volume up + power button trick right?

I'm have ICS installed...but didn't install the overclock so I basically have to start all over haha!
*have to root before I can install the backlight fix
OMG! Now my phone is saying gapps needs force closing and eveything else does too!
nvm. forgot about one-click.exe for ICS hahaha >W>
How do Install it from there? I tried odin and got this
<ID:0/005> Added!!
<OSM> Enter CS for MD5..
<OSM> Check MD5.. Do not unplug the cable..
<OSM> Please wait..
<OSM> MD5 hash value is invalid
<OSM> i927_CWM6_Touch_recovery.tar.md5 is invalid.
<OSM> End...
Just found out why. supposedly the .md5 is bad.

If you have CWM, you can flash a ZIP, that contains the required Superuser to gain root acces.

Download this ZIP, reboot into recovery, flash the ZIP, enjoy!

So, flash this, and I have a rooted phone? (Just tested with Rom Manager and it's Rooted!! YAY!)
Problem now, the Flash ClockworkMod Recovery is only giving 2 phones to choose from...
Samsung Epic4G and Samung GalaxyS i9000
What do you recommend for fixing this?
I want to install INC3PTION ROM/MOD but isn't that downgrading to Gingerbread again?

Yes. If you flash this ZIP in recovery, you will have a rooted phone.
INC3PTION ROM is a GB variant, so that would be downgrading from ICS.
IMPORTANT.
If your system works right now, make a nandroid backup BEFORE downgrading to INC3PTION in case of any problems.
And take a look in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1897224

How to make a nandroid backup.
- boot into recovery
- in recovery, select "backup and restore"
- select "backup"
- wait until it completes
done!
Nandroid backup helps you to get your system back, if anything goes wrong with an update.

OH! I did that before I installed superuser on my phone. Thank you so much for all your help today.
I noticed something. I took all that time working on putting the keyboard light fix on...and now..I hardly use the keyboard.
I was thinking of installing the 4.1.2 Unoffical CM10 Beta. But then I thought about the times when I might need to use the physical keyboard haha.
I am working on setting Go SMS Pro as my default messaging and Dialer One as my default caller, but in ICS, I can't find the Settings > Applications > Manage applications

Oh one more thing...
you might want to try to redownload the rom
just in case its fragmented somehow
if you get into recovery you can copy over the rom again while in recovery
make sure you are usb unplugged
boot recovery
plug usb into computer
go to mount
only cache, internal sdcard and micro sdcard are selected on mine
then click on mount usb storage
copy over fresh copy of rom
then follow my flash instructions

To the OP, I'm glad you got it working. JMT JB3 is great. I'm on it too. I love it.
Just a side note on these scripts. Darkside does not work with anything based off of the official 4.1.2 release because of the Preload that is included. You need to use the new modified ones from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2235141

The procedure for a rom installation is usually listed on its OP<-Opening Page
One more thing... you asked me in a text message about root...
TWRP 2.5.0.0 has the ability to root a device...
here is... IMO the easiest procedure to install stock 4.1.2, recovery and root
flash stock rom with odin (I rebooted to system looked at the sock rom quick and went back to odin(should still work without restart toggle on))
flash TWRP 2.5.0.0 (with reboot toggle on)
open TWRP go to reboot and reboot system (it will prompt you to install root)
when phone boots open SU update done!

READ THIS PLEASE-Updated With Fix 10/12- N-900T: Brick Loop After Restoring Backup

For those who are stuck in the "Brickloop" after restoring a backup in TWRP. See "Edit 2"...
____________________________
Edit : This seems to be the fix.. Worked for me and others who have tried ..
1. Install Stock firmware via Odin, then re-run auto-root (to regain root of course)
2. Install TWRP 2.6.3.2 via odin, reboot to recovery.
3. Do an "adb shell" when phone is in recovery mode to run commands via TWRP.
From the ADB shell: Wiped the EFS partition with the following command:
mke2fs /dev/block/mmcblk0p12
mkdir /efs
mount -t ext4 /dev/block/mmcblk0p12 /efs
(the last two commands probably did nothing, but thats what I did anyway)
Do a factory reset, reboot system
Afterwards, no more boot looping, the phone successfully registered on the mobile network, and my IMEI is there and correct. Seems like the EFS partition can rebuild itself now I guess...
Gotta love the XDA community !!!:highfive:
Edit 2
You can also try just running Commands via TWRP before using Odin to revert to stock, re-rooting etc..Worked for me while I was doing some restore testing with Jovy's modded kernel ..Just trying to save you some time..
Using TWRP Terminal Command To Complete this evolution...
1. Reboot to recovery
2. Hit "Advanced" Select "Terminal Command"
3. Hit "Select" (lower right corner)..Do not select any specific folder, just hit select..
4. keyboard will open, type in the following commands, make sure you put the spaces and / where they need to be, it needs to look exactly as outlined..
mke2fs /dev/block/mmcblk0p12
Hit Go - The command will run.
Clear the box, type the following command
mkdir /efs
Hit Go - The command will run.
Clear the box, type the following command
mount -t ext4 /dev/block/mmcblk0p12 /efs
Hit Go - The command will run.
You can now back out of the terminal command, and follow the rest of the directions.
Also, if you plan on flashing custom ROM's after getting out of the loop, use TWRP ver 2.6.3.1.
Updated : Please see updated TWRP thread for latest information regarding release Version. 2.3.6.8

Trying to "Restore" a backup this morning....
Got another one coming, so I have this one to experiment on for fixes for a couple day's. Hopefully we can get it figured out... Seems to be a partition issue (my guess anyway), need to get a stock PIT file to flash in Odin, at least we can see if that's it..? Rule it out, or determine it's the culprit.
That's such a bummer. Keeping an eye on this thread and will report anything i find. 4th one I've seen..

Made it worse, didn't even get to the T-Mob splash screen, got stuck on the initial Note 3 screen... Previous attempts made it to the T-Mob splash screen, on occasion it would actually just get into the launcher when I'd get "System Process Failed" with the option to wait or cancel. Regardless of selection, or just letting it sit there for a minute, would throw it back into a boot loop...
So for this attempt
Installed TWRP via Odin
Checked rm - rf
Wiped, Factory Reset
Tried installing Darthstalker / Deodexed Stock
No Luck..

That link there has all the instructions and files you need.
Basically you'll download the 2nd file (the exe version) under the heading "nodata" versions.
then follow the step by step instructions on that page.
you should be good to go.
just to sum it up

You could go here [ROM][ODIN][TAR]SPH-L710 MD4 (MD4 Modem/Kernel/ROM - Stock): to get the one click odin file, download the EXE (might want to start with the rooted MD4 to save a few steps) then you can try to reflash CM afterwards

i downloaded it and my computer said windows protected my pc
I ran into the boot loop early today when I tried to install CM10.2 via the windows installer.
All I could do was to get the phone to boot into "download mode". However, ODIN wasn't recognizing that my phone was plugged in.
I ended up uninstalling and re-installing the Samsung USB drivers.
When I plugged in my phone it completed the install of the drivers,\.
ODIN then recognized my phone was connected and the "COM" lit up.
I was able to reflash TWRP recovery and get my phone to reboot in recovery and reflash the backup rom.
kev
how?

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2011491 <- I followed this thread from skunkape
The ROMS are listed here....
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s3-sprint#romList <- you can get the rom from here (remember to wipe the davlik-cache because I think that is what was causing mine to reboot)
You can alternatively get the CM10.2 (http://download.cyanogenmod.org/?device=d2spr) from here and copy it to your SDcard and install.
kev
thanks

HELP !!! Reboots to Download mode after restore failed

Hello experts
While I research just thought I would post my issue.
I have rooted and installed CyanogenMod 10.1 dated 11-14-13 and was quite happy with it. Thought I would update to more recent stable version and downloaded cm-10.2.0-jfltetmo.zip and copied it to sdcard root.
Before doing anything wanted to test my nandroid backup set and tried to restore it to a 12-03 backup but it failed with a Boot restore error.
It appears that i lost the bootloder. It goes to Download mode when powered up. (this make me think that I have not Bricked it)
Can someone help me please?
--Tmobile Samsung Galaxy s4 sgh-m919
-- Clockwork recovery
Thank you in advance

I use the TWRP recovery and it has an option of what to backup,
one of the options it has is include "boot". (bootloader)
If that option in TWRP is not selected it will not backup "boot".
Perhaps the CWM recovery also has an option like that and it was
not selected before you started to create the nandroid backup.
The only thing you can do now is to ODIN flash the stock rom
and start from scratch including re-root.
Good luck!

Thanks for the response Misterjunky!
I used Nandroid backup tool to backup. I think but not positive that I saw the Boot option checked. There was one the was unchecked by default something starting with Yf... or something .. do not remember the term.
I connected to PC and did ODIN and it worked fine and said 'PASS' on odin screen. on reboot it again went to download mode. On top it says cannot do normal boot in red. Will keep checking for answers but if you have any suggestions please guide me.
Thank you again
Did you Odin the stock image?

This worked baseballfanz. Thank you.
Finally I am back to Stock MDL. But as others encountered WIFI doesn't want to turn on.
On another hunt for solution.
Tried FDR and wipe/restore from stock recovery. No luck yet.
Do I need to use custom recovery? If so do I need to redo (Odin the stock image)?
Thanks again in advance.

[Q] cant mount efs - trying to flash new kernel/rom

Aloha!
I am trying to fix a friend's phone, what he got is when turning on the note 2 its stuck on the boot screen.
First thing I tried is factory reset, but when going to recovery mode it says can't mount /efs. Same thing happens when trying to factory reset.
If there is any fix for it, I'd love to hear!
If not, can someone please guide me on how to install blank and new bl+kernel+rom?
I tried following this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2060389
1) When I try to flash the BL through odin - it fails:
<ID:0/012> Added!!
<ID:0/012> Odin v.3 engine (ID:12)..
<ID:0/012> File analysis..
<ID:0/012> SetupConnection..
<ID:0/012> Can't open the serial(COM) port.
<OSM> All threads completed. (succeed 0 / failed 1)

2) I didn't find a link for the kernel installation file - just the source files
3) I didn't find a link for the rom file which is recognized by odin - tar or md5 etc
Feel free to treat me like a newbie, and please leave detailed info...
I flashed my fair share of roms on my old S2, so if anything I wrote is outdated (still using ODIN?) please correct me
Thanks!
Alex

Updated link
Well I looked in the link you gave but didn't find it much helpful, either I tried flashing CWM but now it won't go to recovery mode at all.
When I just turn on the phone its stuck on the "Samsung" screen.
When I go to recovery its stuck on the Galaxy Note II screen.
And download mode works fine.
I think I first need to flash a new kernel and rom, anyone can provide me with links to kernel and a rom that works with it and both flashable by odin?
All the threads in the development section have .zip files and those not flashable by odin.
thanks
Anyone?
Link to rom and kernel that can be flashed using Odin.
