[Q] Download mode issues - not recognized

I'm having problems getting my phone recognized by Heimdall (both Windows and Mac) and Odin (Windows). Here's the situation.
I have a practically fresh install of Windows with no drivers installed. I downloaded Heimdall to try and restore my Epic that has the [Phone] ! [PC] screen. I booted it into recovery mode, ran zadig, used a non-Samsung cable, etc. Heimdall's detect button recognizes my phone. However, when I actually try and do anything, I get "Error: libusb error: -12". I've seen some posts from different forums that say this is correlated with NOT having the zadig drivers installed, so I reinstalled them and rebooted for good measure. I still have the same problem.
So, I assumed that Heimdall was a lost cause and moved on to Odin. I'm following the how to in the dev forum and I installed the drivers mentioned there (x64 as I'm on Win 7 64 bit), downloaded the TAR, and so on. I open up Odin, put my phone in download mode, plug it in... and Windows says that it's an unknown device and can't recognize it. I've uninstalled/reinstalled the drivers several times, swapped out USB cables, and I can't find or think of anything more to do.
Help!
Okay when you open device manager and find the "unknown device" update the driver with your epic 4g drivers this will fix it hopefully... if not try and unistalling it pulling your usb out and popping out the battery and leave it out and plug in the usb and go into dlmode and it should reset things.

I'm getting a screen that says "The best software for your device is already installed. Windows has determined the driver software for your device is already up to date." and the dialog still shows Unknown Device.

Hmm that's weird sorry.... don't have a 64bit pc so I've never tried em.... I'm at a loss then... usually if you unistall it and go back into download mode it erases the previous setup and asks you for the reccommended install or advance install which is what you would want to advance install the correct drivers...

Well thanks for trying. I'm basically where I started, unfortunately: I put the phone in download mode, it tells me it's an Unknown Device, I can't update/advanced install the correct drivers, and Odin doesn't recognize my device.

Just read someone fixed this by reinstalling Windows 7. Otherwise try Heimdall. It installs it's own drivers. Check out post 2 here:

this is a direct link to the drivers needed.
Well, I got it to work with Heimdall. It seems to have been a combination of the USB cable, USB port, and drivers that caused my problems. Here's how I got it to work for those who might have this problem in the future.
1. Uninstall literally everything related to Samsung, Heimdall, Odin, etc. This means uninstall any drivers, delete all instances of Odin, Heimdall, Kies, or any other software.
2. Reboot.
3. Download the latest version of Heimdall (1.3.1).
4. Remove the battery from your Epic and let it sit for about 15 minutes.
5. Get a fresh, non-Samsung (and possibly non Amazon, as that's another one that didn't work for me) USB cable. I opened a brand new Monoprice one that I had laying around.
6. Plug in the cable to a USB port directly on your computer.
7. Hold down power and 1 while plugging in the USB cable (this is with the battery still out).
8. Run zadig.exe, which comes with Heimdall. The computer should recognize it as a Samsung composite device or "Gadget serial". Install drivers.
9. Open Heimdall and flash. DON'T TOUCH ANYTHING UNTIL IT'S DONE!
Great. As long as u got it to work. Excellent.

don't know if you are still around,..but THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!! After all my searching and seaching,. this post saved me. Uninstalled drivers, rebooted pc, and the rest is history. Before I used heimdall I reinstalled the drivers and unzipped odin,. and odin recognized the phone,.so getting phone back up was just a matter of adding 2 files to odin and waiting!
this site had ALL the files I needed as well
epiccm.blogspot.com ..I cant post the direct link yet but maybe search factory firmware with the site.

i found it was a driver issue.. the new drivers that install with kies..
Here is the verison that worked for me: SAMSUNG_USB_Driver_for_Mobile_Phones_1.4.8.0
It's the fault of outdated Windows Update drivers for our phones.
Correct way of installing drivers if above error is present:
1. Disconnect phone from PC.
2. Uninstall Kies and drivers.
3. Download fresh copy of Kies from Samsung website.
4. Turn off Internet connection on PC <- important! This will force OS to look for drivers on PC first instead of Windows Update.
5. Install Kies, run it.
6. Connect phone to PC and wait for drivers installation.
7. Turn on Internet connection.
8. Done.

Having problems with connecting phone to computer

Whenever I connect my phone to the computer to put music on it i get a error message saying "Hardware Id Missing Windows cannot identify the device plugged into the SAMSUNG Mobile USB Composite Device." Is there any way to fix this?
I believe, if you are on Windows, you can search for and download the Samsung drivers for your phone. You will have to choose 32 or 64 bit. Then it should show up as an extra storage device under the my computer program
Download kies, it will install the Samsung drivers. After installation connect your phone and let it connect. It'll take about 5 minutes then you'll be good to go.

Still wish there was a Mac solution. Couldn't get my S3 to connect and neither my Note 2. I'm stuck using Windowz whenever I want to file transfer. .
And yes I've tried absolutely everything, but install Parallels on my Mac lol

USB drivers.

When I used windows 7 my phone was detected by pc as well as pc companion, but when I upgraded to windows 8 on my laptop, pc and companion both won't recognise the phone, but flashtool does recognise.
Drivers from flashtool are all correctly installed. It just gets connected in Mass Storage mode(MSC), but not MTP( media transfer mode).
I read many forums but found no solution, could anyone help me out

There are no official drivers released for Windows 8. Especially if you use x64.
Current possibility is to disable driver verification enforcement (search on google, I'm not gonna write it all for you) and then give another try.
Tried doing that, no luck, btw I use x86.

Having the same problem here and until now i couldn't figure it out
Why some get it working but on my laptop is not.
Probably there is some problems not in our xperia drivers
But because of some hardware differences in our computers
Thanks to my little luck, i have an old laptop which i use to flash
Firmwares and kernels!
Good luck and hope you find a solution and share it to us
There are no MTP drivers, so it cannot be used on Windows 8.

[A] USB Device Not Recognized

Hey Guys,
So im having an issue for when i try to connect my note 2 running Jedi X20 to my windows 8.1 computer i get an error stating "USB Device Not Recognized". I have tried everything from trying different cables, downloading drivers, deleted and reinstalling drivers, checking to see if my phone is set to PDA, trying factory reset in TWRP, etc. i was wondering if anyone has successfully fixed this issue and they could help me.
I am trying to get my device connected so ODIN may recognize my device so i can revert it back to Stock.
My note 2 is also showing up as "unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed)

Have you tried the USB ports on the back of the PC? If so....
Maybe try updating the drivers for the motherboard of your PC instead of using standard Windows 8.1 drivers. Assuming Windows 8.1 is recognizing all the USB ports you are trying to plug your cable into.
If this does not work and you have a copy of Windows 7, download Virtualbox and install Windows 7 as a virtual machine. Launch it make sure you have the USB settings inside the virtual machine setup to allow the USB to be used from Host PC.
Load the Samsung drivers in the Windows 7 virtual machine. I'm assuming those are the drivers you have stated you have downloading and reinstalled.
Sorry meant to say it's a laptop. Tried all ports and installing drivers. Unfortunately I don't have windows 7
