Screen problem after 4.1.2 update. - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

A friend has recently updated her Galaxy Nexus phone to 4.1.2 According to her, the screen is now much smaller with big thick black lines at the top and bottom of the home screen. Ideas on what the problem is, how to fix it?

Hmm thats strange. Is it a ROM? If it is, wipe completely and choose a different one. If its OTA, then I have no idea. That's very strange.

Like what happens when iPhone app isn't optimized for 4 inch screen? That's weird. Never heard anything like that. I personally don't have it, but my friend has 4'1'2 and no problems there
Swyped on my Galaxy Nexus running AOKP with Franco Kernel

that's not right at all... is it stock and updated to 4.1.2 via an OTA? Never heard of that problem.

Problem is taken care of. Until I was able to look at the phone for myself I wasn't able to 'verify' the problem. From what she was saying and what I saw, was two different things. In essence, it looks like the dock bar get's a little larger in 4.1.2 (Yes this is stock, unrooted. Mine is anything but, so I can't compare with hers.) and the shifting of the other icons threw her for a loop. So I installed Nova Launcher and now it looks more like it used to. Plus she loves the idea of having those extra grids and more.
Thanks for everyone's help, but it seems as if it was a false alarm. Gotta love non tech friendly friends.

[Q] Help Freaking Out

Have a major problem with my screen when turning phone on or rebooting the screen looks fine. But when I get to the actual home screen it's looks crazy with vertical lines on it like a white noise effect but when I shut the screen off and then turn it back on it's gone. It's freaking me the hell out what could be causing it? Is there something wrong with my phone? Is there a setting somewhere that's out of whack? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

sounds like a hardware issue, which ROM are you using?
Try reflashing.
Sent from my cm6evo using XDA App
I had this problem right after I flashed a kernel. Try wiping your dalvik and cache and rebooting, thats what fixxed it for me.
I have this same problem, and it only happens with certain kernels. I think it's an Epson thing. My last phone was a Novatech and had no issues and my current one is an Epson. Sometimes it's that crazy vertical line garbage, others times it's horrible tearing. It only happens after a reboot and ALWAYS goes away after turning the screen off and on. I stopped caring about it a while ago because it always goes away.
Thanks guys I rest easy now I was worried I was going to have to deal with sprint.

No prob man. With my last phone I was very limited with which ROMs and kernels I could run. It wouldnt run any AOSP ROM and most if not all HAVS kernels were a no-go. My current one will run anything I want it to run, and runs MUCH smoother and snappier than my last phone. So, I deal with the weird screen thing and I get a phone that blows the socks off my last one. It's a fair trade off IMHO.
Ya I got worried as I'm still at noob status with this whole rooting thing and thought I fried my phone. I tried searching the forums but couldn't find the issue anywhere I had talked to sprint and they told me that it was a hardware issue. Glad that its nothing to worry about. I'm loving the boosted speed that I get from my phone.
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk
Are you running a custom ROM/kernel or are you still stock?
Running cm6.1
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk
Yeah, definitely don't worry about it then. If that's the only issue you're having then let it go, it's not a big issue at all
Have you tried MIUI yet?
No not yet.
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk
Well if you are a fan of AOSP then I recommend at least trying it. I thought I was going to hate it but tried it on a whim and have never looked back.
This is a fairly common issue with cm6.1 rc1.
There's a thread in the cm forums where multiple people are getting the same thing. I would post the link, but apparently I'm too new here.

New GN froze had to pull battery...No big deal?

Hi everyone,
New GN,
ITLF41

yakjuux
4.01
I've only unlocked it, haven't done anything else.
I was only replying to a text message and in the middle of text, GN froze and the screen went black with a white line across top of screen.
Seemed to occur while the auto-rotate function was trying to rotate screen.
I also noticed the auto rotate on my GN does not work well at all. Sometimes it does, sometimes it will not no matter how long I wait.
Nothing worked, had to pull battery.
Seems fine after replacing battery.
I wouldn't be concerned but for the fact that I was not using 3rd party apps or a different rom. The force 2d option is off.
Is maybe something funky with the GN auto-rotate feature in 4.01?

Yes, versions 4.0.2 and 4.0.3 fix a LOT of little issues with the GN. They really should've released the phone with one of those 2 versions rather than 4.0.1.
I don't think you should be too worried about battery pulls unless they happen more often than you like.
Just like a computer...rebooting or pulling the battery at least once a week is recommended!

I'm a Network Admin for a large School Board. I know its strange I know nothing about smart Phones but I do know much about Wireless/Routers/switches and Computers.
If your rebooting computers once a week something is amiss....lol
I have servers and clients that have uptimes of 1 year+ before an update requires me to down a server or re-image a client.
In my case, if what had happened to my NEW GN happened on one of my OES2 Linux servers, Id be scrambling until the issue was found and fixed and i'd be none to happy.
But alas, a server is not a cell phone.
I hope it was a just a freak isolated incident.

One very simple reason: If you pull the battery in a bad moment, e.g. right when the hardware is writing something to the Flash memory, you might (soft-) brick your phone and lose all the data on it.

Well because,
If I have to keep pulling the battery (which is NOT occurring thankfully so far) then I would say something is wrong and its not just a software bug. I would call it a blue screen of death in computer terms.
That could be anything from a hardware fault (Memory/CPU/IO sub system..etc) That would for me, mean taking it back.
A hard reset may temporarily fix the issue. But it doesn't solve the underlying problems.
I'm hoping the error was a one off. If it never occurs again, then we're good to go.
If it does, its goin back.
Same thing happened to me, the weird thing is it happened right after I completely reset the phone...

In my case the Auto rotate feature seems to be the common theme for funkyness.
Sometimes its quick, less than a second, sometimes it doesn't move at all.....
Then, a hard lock.
I realize that 4.02 and .03 fix some bugs but I have the Canadian ver. and google is not gonna update OTA for my NG.
I'm not ready for the whole, flash to "google's" stock rom yet. I just learned to unlock it...lol. If it locks again i'll try that. If it don't i'll leave well enough alone.
Oh by the way, to the Admins, sorry for not posting in the Q&A section. I though i was in the Q&A, my mistake.

Actually, I have to replace cmos batteries all the time.
Usually they are good for 4 or 5 years but sometimes not.
Some people don't know what "Hit F1 to continue" means and I get calls all the time.
So yes, its quite common to have to pull a bad battery when dealing with 2,000+ PC's ...

Because I use a otterbox with my Galaxy Nexus and it's not very pleasent to keep taking my phone out of it's hard shell case and putting it back in?
Pulling the battery is always a last resort. If the phone is frozen, that is fine to pull the battery or you can hold power on the phone and it'll turn off by itself (not sure if this is in the GN but it was in Galaxy S1).

You are correct. Its not a common everyday thing for most.
I was just suggesting a legit reason for why anyone would need to pull a computer battery.
On another note, i agree with you that having an otterbox case makes it even more of a pain to have to pull the battery.
I just had another freeze up while trying to get back to the main page using the launcher.
Im getting worried now. I've had this phone for 2 weeks and it was great until today....
I think I'm gonna bring it back to virgin just to be safe before my 30 days is up.
If its just software then the new one will do it as well but at at least I'll know thats what it is and either wait for samsung updates or update manually.
Again....nowhere in my response did I say u HAVE to pull the battery every week....I simply said its best if u do, nobody is gonna force u to! But when u do get a bug...pull that battery, and if it keeps happening, send it for warranty...simple

[REVIEW]My thoughts after 1 week...

I switched to Verizon from Sprint one week ago. I bought the Galaxy Nexus and my wife has a Droid 4 (after trading out the Stratosphere).
After the first week with the Galaxy Nexus, I must say I am very happy. I was using the Samsung Epic 4G Touch on Sprint, and at the time it was the best phone I had ever used. There are some features on this phone that do not stand up to the E4GT, but there are others that blow its doors off.
What I Like
Ice Cream Sandwich has been a great treat for me. I haven't been the biggest fan of the stock launchers up until ICS. The entire interface is truly a pleasure to use. Some of the features I like are:
• The options given for the lockscreen are great.
• Face Unlock works very well, except in low light.
• The on screen buttons work very well and add a nice component to the OS. I love the fact that the buttons open up valuable real estate on the front of the device to allow for a larger screen. The merits of this shine through when watching videos in landscape mode.
• The Galaxy Nexus has a beautiful display. Watching HQ content in you tube has been a treat. Everything looks brilliant on the display.
• The stock keyboard in ICS is excellent. I began using it on my E4GT as a market downloadable version, and I must say, it may even be slightly better on the GN. The word prediction is excellent and I find that even when typing fast I don't seem to make many mistakes.
• I love the app/widget drawer. The way they were integrated together works nicely. They are related, and thus should be together.
• The new multitasking button has become one of my new best friends. It is so simple to use and a lot less clunky than the old way of holding the home button.
• The settings menu is even improved. Mostly, the aesthetics are improved, but I also find the data usage meter very useful and handy; hell it even shows data used while using wifi.
• I also like the new folder system used on the home screens. I am using that feature and because of the folders, I don't miss having 7 screens.
What I Dislike
There isn't much that I don't like about this phone, but there are a couple things I miss:
• While the screen is brilliant, the high resolution causes some notification bar displays I used to use too small to read.
• I wish the dialer would function in a way that while I dial a number it searches for, and displays, potential matches for me to choose from.
• I wish the notification bar had some toggle in it (I know that isn't a stock Android feature.
As for the switch to Verizon...
I have been very impressed with the service I have received from Verizon. I have contacted them a few times by phone and each and every time I have felt as though they actually care about my business and want to help me. They have been extremely pleasant. Coming from Sprint, where I always felt like I was a burden when I called. The representatives at Sprint seemed to be on the defensive before I even opened my mouth.
Also, the coverage and speed of the LTE network is very impressive. Sprints WiMax network was fast when I could connect to it, which was seldom. I am (almost) always connected to LTE and have regularly seen 20+ Mbps download.
In Conclusion
The Galaxy Nexus is a joy to use and the network is fantastic. The extra $20-30 a month for Verizon is well worth it in my opinion.
glad you like the phone.
Now unlock that sucker and install AOKP on it; it will fix the last two points of your dislikes.

yeah what he said. I disliked those as well, once I rooted and installed Kang, I am so happy with the phone. Which is kinda a bummer now I have nothing more to complain about and nothing to search to install. OH HUM
Is this AOKP going to give me the stock experience I have grown so fond of?
Also, will it wipe my phone to install? I unlocked the boot loader already because I read that would wipe everything. I have not rooted yet though.
Thanks for the information and suggestion. I will look into the link when I get home.

Its off 4.0.3 AOKP-TORO-Milestone 3 and I am running Franco Kernel with it.
I took it off the charger at 5am and its now 6 pm and I have about 40 percent battery left. and I use the phone all the time, texting tweeting calls pics. Its much better than stock, there are alot of mods you can do with it as well to save battery.
I am totally stoked about the phone now

Once you unlock the bootloader loading a ROM wont wipe the phone. It will keep files in tack on the phone
You will want to wipe data when you load or switch roms though. Wiping data in recovery will:
Delete your apps, texts, call history, remove your Gmail account.
Wiping data in recovery will NOT:
Delete anything on your "SD card" this includes pictures you have taken and anything you have transferred over via your computer.

I used the Galaxy root tool kit. it is by far the easiest thing for rooting unlocking and relocking and returning to stock
Thanks bootsie. I appreciate the help. I'm hesitant to flash a rom right now because I am so happy with the stock build. I'm afraid to find something changed or missing and not be able to get back to stock without losing all my apps and stuff.

I just did the same thing 2 days ago. I had a ET4G and my wife had a Nexus S 4G. I have a GalaxyNexus now and she has the Motorola Razor. She was really close to getting the Droid 4 but I told her he would like the bigger screen better (she loves words with friends lol). Sprint has terrible service on my street and in my house. So I switched after 8 years. Im running MIUI right now. Still can't believe that MIUI has 4G working on this service.

Defective Touchscreen?

Hey
I had some issues with the Touchscreen of my GNex, i thought it was nothing special, because i had something similiar on my xoom too but it only occurred 1 time on it.
Then i've tested the GNex for some Days and i'm now very sure it's a hardware defect, but i want to know what you think of it.
I'll try to describe it a bit:
Sometimes (i sadly don't know when or why) it launches a line of touch-inputs rapidly on the right side of the screen. It's really annoying because it starts a bunch of apps or commands...it even shuts down my alarm in the morning sometimes.
The big problem is, i'm on Vacation for 2 weeks soon...means i can't give it back to warranty now...maybe there is a way to disable the sensetivity of the touchscreen because these inputs are very light. With a testapp i was able to see that it's half as "heavy" as when i tap the screen with a finger.
I've attached a vid of it, maybe someone could say if this happens on their GNex too...i doubt no. (The vid is not that good, please apologize)
Link: http://goo.gl/QnTy7 (Sorry Attachment doesn't work somehow)
No one out there with a idea what's wrong with my gnex? :-(
I would go to verizon and see if there is anyway they could give you a replacement considering your circumstances. Or maybe they would give you a loaner phone while yours is being serviced.
Does it look a bit like this behavior?

I would get a replacement phone from T-Mobile but that would be a real old phone and I have a nexus s here so maybe use this.
But would be nice to know if it's a hardware defect or if it's fixable....
I'll try to exchange it after my vacation.
Yes it's the same behaviour as in that video. I uploaded one too in the first post and mine is only a bit more right on the screen...
I'm really disappointed because my nexus s has some defects too and I'm curious if all Google devices has some defects....
Thanks for the answers
0 defects on my Nexus S
0 defects on my Galaxy Nexus

maybe flash any custom rom? hope you have your bootloader unlock or any pc close
I'm using CM9 since I got the GNex, will try reflashing it tomorrow with full wipe. Will report then.
Hope it's only the ROM, the screen works perfectly aside from this.
I didn't know you were running I custom rom, I would definitely try and do a full wipe and load the rom again or a different one.

Picture Quality switching to a ICS ROM?

Did a quick search and didn't see anything. I don't know if it's my mind playing tricks on me or if it's just switching phones. Was on the SIII for a bit and just switched to a SII until more dev support is out.
The E4GT was 100% virgin stock earlier today.
I rooted and it was fine.
After installing Caluklin's 1.6 it seems like the picture quality dropped. Text seem to have rugged/fuzzy edges.
Am I imagining things or did I miss some dpi goods?
If this is crazy talk, just tell me. The only thing I changed was the display mode and set it to dynamic. Switched back to standard and it's still the same.

Dynamic Screen Mode causing rough edges in ICS
I just received the over the air ICS update this morning and immediately noticed the same thing with the screen clarity.
After messing around with it all day I found out that it's only evident when the "Screen Mode" is set to "Dynamic"
A huge disappointment since the colors on the Epic 4G Touch pop like nothing else in dynamic mode.
But it seems ruined or at least not worth putting up with the jagged edges everywhere to have dynamic mode on now.
i have been asking about this for months. im glad to finally see someone else noticed it. it bothers me so much I am sticking to gb

Funny that I never noticed this before. Most likely because I had my phone set to 'standard' instead of 'dynamic'. When I did the change to dynamic & tested different apps I did notice jagged edges while on ICS.
