[REVIEW]My thoughts after 1 week... - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I switched to Verizon from Sprint one week ago. I bought the Galaxy Nexus and my wife has a Droid 4 (after trading out the Stratosphere).
After the first week with the Galaxy Nexus, I must say I am very happy. I was using the Samsung Epic 4G Touch on Sprint, and at the time it was the best phone I had ever used. There are some features on this phone that do not stand up to the E4GT, but there are others that blow its doors off.
What I Like
Ice Cream Sandwich has been a great treat for me. I haven't been the biggest fan of the stock launchers up until ICS. The entire interface is truly a pleasure to use. Some of the features I like are:
• The options given for the lockscreen are great.
• Face Unlock works very well, except in low light.
• The on screen buttons work very well and add a nice component to the OS. I love the fact that the buttons open up valuable real estate on the front of the device to allow for a larger screen. The merits of this shine through when watching videos in landscape mode.
• The Galaxy Nexus has a beautiful display. Watching HQ content in you tube has been a treat. Everything looks brilliant on the display.
• The stock keyboard in ICS is excellent. I began using it on my E4GT as a market downloadable version, and I must say, it may even be slightly better on the GN. The word prediction is excellent and I find that even when typing fast I don't seem to make many mistakes.
• I love the app/widget drawer. The way they were integrated together works nicely. They are related, and thus should be together.
• The new multitasking button has become one of my new best friends. It is so simple to use and a lot less clunky than the old way of holding the home button.
• The settings menu is even improved. Mostly, the aesthetics are improved, but I also find the data usage meter very useful and handy; hell it even shows data used while using wifi.
• I also like the new folder system used on the home screens. I am using that feature and because of the folders, I don't miss having 7 screens.
What I Dislike
There isn't much that I don't like about this phone, but there are a couple things I miss:
• While the screen is brilliant, the high resolution causes some notification bar displays I used to use too small to read.
• I wish the dialer would function in a way that while I dial a number it searches for, and displays, potential matches for me to choose from.
• I wish the notification bar had some toggle in it (I know that isn't a stock Android feature.
As for the switch to Verizon...
I have been very impressed with the service I have received from Verizon. I have contacted them a few times by phone and each and every time I have felt as though they actually care about my business and want to help me. They have been extremely pleasant. Coming from Sprint, where I always felt like I was a burden when I called. The representatives at Sprint seemed to be on the defensive before I even opened my mouth.
Also, the coverage and speed of the LTE network is very impressive. Sprints WiMax network was fast when I could connect to it, which was seldom. I am (almost) always connected to LTE and have regularly seen 20+ Mbps download.
In Conclusion
The Galaxy Nexus is a joy to use and the network is fantastic. The extra $20-30 a month for Verizon is well worth it in my opinion.

glad you like the phone.
Now unlock that sucker and install AOKP on it; it will fix the last two points of your dislikes.

yeah what he said. I disliked those as well, once I rooted and installed Kang, I am so happy with the phone. Which is kinda a bummer now I have nothing more to complain about and nothing to search to install. OH HUM

Is this AOKP going to give me the stock experience I have grown so fond of?
Also, will it wipe my phone to install? I unlocked the boot loader already because I read that would wipe everything. I have not rooted yet though.
Thanks for the information and suggestion. I will look into the link when I get home.

So which version of ICS is this based off of? Also, is the battery life improved from stock?

Its off 4.0.3 AOKP-TORO-Milestone 3 and I am running Franco Kernel with it.
I took it off the charger at 5am and its now 6 pm and I have about 40 percent battery left. and I use the phone all the time, texting tweeting calls pics. Its much better than stock, there are alot of mods you can do with it as well to save battery.
I am totally stoked about the phone now

Once you unlock the bootloader loading a ROM wont wipe the phone. It will keep files in tack on the phone

You will want to wipe data when you load or switch roms though. Wiping data in recovery will:
Delete your apps, texts, call history, remove your Gmail account.
Wiping data in recovery will NOT:
Delete anything on your "SD card" this includes pictures you have taken and anything you have transferred over via your computer.

Hmmm, without wiping I dont believe so. Once you return to stock it will wipe your card for sure.
I used the Galaxy root tool kit. it is by far the easiest thing for rooting unlocking and relocking and returning to stock

Thanks bootsie. I appreciate the help. I'm hesitant to flash a rom right now because I am so happy with the stock build. I'm afraid to find something changed or missing and not be able to get back to stock without losing all my apps and stuff.

Make a backup of your stock Rom before flashing something else. Then you can flash back with everything in tact if you do not like anything else.

Given your statement about @ 24 hour battery life what settings are you using in terms of Sync, display etc.?

Just activated my phone and where do I go.. xda...switched from the evo 3d from sprint...I loved 3d hated the service...and wow just been on this phone for a couple hours and it feels great...and service compared to sprint...speechless

I just did the same thing 2 days ago. I had a ET4G and my wife had a Nexus S 4G. I have a GalaxyNexus now and she has the Motorola Razor. She was really close to getting the Droid 4 but I told her he would like the bigger screen better (she loves words with friends lol). Sprint has terrible service on my street and in my house. So I switched after 8 years. Im running MIUI right now. Still can't believe that MIUI has 4G working on this service.

I am with you on how much I like the nexus. After reading the forums and seeing how helpful people are here l going to unlock and root. Good luck with phone.

Yes just create a nand backup of your stock setup. You can return to exactly how your stock setup is down to the last file, text, call log, etc. It will be just as you left it.

I lost my GNEX!! Advice to all users, install GPS tracking apps!

So. I was in a hookah bar in Texas. I'm almost sure I put my GNEX in my pocket right before I left! Must have slipped while I thought I was sliding it in my jacket's pocket!
This is not a thread to complain or for you to feel sorry for me. My previous phone was a Motorola Atrix 4G, which can be GPS-tracked and remotely-wiped through the MotoBlur website. I must have been too excited with the GNEX that I did not find the time to check if I had the same options in case of emergencies. It seems Google Nexus phones does not have a similar feature by default. I went back home and tried tracking the NEX but no go. I did not have any apps for this functionality pre-installed. **pulls hair**. There's an app called "Plan B" which can be installed remotely using your account in the Android market website to enable GPS locating. Sadly, It did not work for me. Maybe it's not updated to support ICS yet.
Anyway, I'm just saying make sure to install a reliable GPS tracking app and test it in case you misplace your GNEX phones. (maybe even recommend us one?)
I used my brother's iPhone 4S later that night and I almost laughed despite how sad I was for my loss. The iphone feels like a little toy after getting used to the GNEX. I felt the same when I went back to my Atrix too, which has an even larger screen than the iphone 4s. I concluded, there's no going back.. I ordered another GNEX today!
Good luck.

Yes, I did change my Google account password right after I failed to track the device. I needed the password to be unchanged until I (quickly) try to locate the device using the Plan B app.
A reminder to people who lose their phones..
If you somehow fail to locate your lost device and feel or knew it might be in someone else's hands:
-Change your Gmail/Google password.
-Login to Google Checkout and remove all credit cards added to your account.
-Inform your phone provider/carrier to disable your SIM. Excessive usage of data can show up on your bill if you have limited plans.
Also, If you have Google Maps Latitude service enabled, It's possible with some luck to locate the phone accurately by logging in to the Google Latitude website and look for yourself.

No you don't.. I've used Plan B without Lookout before.
This is the first and only 'find my phone' app that you download AFTER you've already lost your phone. Having Lookout on your phone is the best way to protect your phone and find it fast, but use Plan B if you have already lost your phone and didn't have Lookout installed.

I don't know about Android Lost, haven't tried it but I believe Phone Locator Pro has to be the best thing out there. It has every option imaginable including the ability to continuosly send what ever message you want to your phone for the thief to read, but he still can't unlock it. Also takes a silent snap shot from the front camera of your device on any failed unlock attempts and sends it immediately to your email.

I also installed AndroidLost. It can be hidden without rooting and you have to administer it from the website.
Sorry you lost your phone, that really sucks
I should probably heed your advice and install one of these GPS programs but I have concerns.
1. Surely they drain your battery quite a lot?
2. Wouldn't you have to leave GPS on all the time?
3. I'm not sure I'd trust some random company with all my data..
4. Would it actually help you find it? I mean if you lose your phone someone's going to take it aren't they?
Thoughts?

I'll answer first cerberus.
1. Battery isn't affected at all, it will track your phone when you'll log in on a pc. So it's not tracking 100% of the time.
2. You can turn it off, when you'll go on the website you can turn it on. So you can loose your phone, turn it on and find it back. So even if the thief turn gps and data off, you can reenable them from the website.
3. I trust them
4. Yeah it will help, you'll see his position on Google map and every time he try to unlock it,. It. Take a picture with front camera. It will be easy to recognize the thief.
The app doesn't appear on the phone and it can't be installed and deleted without your cerberus username and password.

1. Not necessarily, but they need to run in the background, yeah.
2. The app would be given permission to turn on GPS if it's off.
3. There are some apps which need a lot of permission to work properly (like Light Flow), that's why users should look for apps by recognized developers if they decide to install apps like that, not just random one from the market.
4. Yes it can. I once lost my Atrix phone and found it in my friend's car under the seat after GPS-tracking it in the Motorola website. So, It's not ONLY for cases of theft although it can help with that.
If I had a GPS tracking app in my lost GNEX, I'd be able to tell it was still in the hookah bar where I believe I lost it and confront them there about it, but I had no proof. I'd rather lose the money than accuse the employees there without an evidence.

[Q] Where to start/What to expect: Verizon Gnex

I'm tired of my LG Cosmos 2, despite the requirement of a data plan I'm getting an Android Phone. Since this phone has many of the features I like, Especially the unlocked bootloader, I'm 98% going for a Galaxy Nexus on Verizon.
I'm not brand new to android, but I do have a few questions about this phone mainly because of the three variants (GSM,Sprint,Verizon)
1. Does the Verizon Version have a fully unlocked bootloader still? Is there any other carrier locking based crap that they've thrown in to limit people?
2. Is this an essentially 'unbrickable' phone, by unbrickable I mean that (Like my ASUS TF101 tablet for instance) there is a separate 'APX' or download mode that lets me reflash firmware on it's own. (Like ODIN or NvFlash)
3. How many kernels are out there and what are your personal favorites/stability on those, or should I stick with stock? (opinion)
4. What are some of my Recovery choices, such as TWRP or Rouge or CWM, is there a touch interface that also has volume buttons?
5. If anyone's running AOKP, it's my favorite ROM on my Transformer, how's the Stability on the Gnex?
Thanks,
ToD
Tl;DR: Does Verizon put any locks/limits/crap extra on the phone, is there Download/APX mode, and what are some Recovery/Rom/Kernel choices I have?
1) still unlocked
2) there's fastboot and odin.
3) depends on what you want in a kernel. make sure you pick one from the verizon section
4) TWRP and CWM are it i believe - both have touch versions
5) i run it and its quite fine.

There is a good poll in the gnex general discussion about roms and a good discussion on kernels. I don't have the links. Those helped me when I first started out though. you could search for them there.

One thing to expect from Verizon's version is dropped calls and your mic going out on you. There is currently no fix and there may not be one. Since the S3 is coming out I think Verizon gave up on the issue. Anyone can go into a store and trade the phone across the table for something else.

Thank you for the responses (I'll be sure to hit the button when my cooldown refreshes )
I'm more of a texter than a talker, so the mic thing isn't terribly important, and I use a BT headset.
(If it's a Stock ROM problem, I'm going to be on the stock ROM for only about 15 mins when I root and put a Custom ROM on, The Transformer has made me despise and avoid stock... lol)
Thanks

It depends on what you want. for example, i rooted my phones because I got tired of the ads on every game and app. so, i installed ad-free android. and also, i like to use different ROMs. but if you aren't into things like that, you don't have to root. the phone is excellent just the way it is.
I wouldn't recommend rooting your phone at the moment, at least wait till after the update. but to be honest this phone is super smooth and the only reason you'd really want to root is as the guy mentioned above, and maybe a few other tweaks or if you wanted to try cyanogen 10.1 or aosp/aokp roms.

Why not just downlaod the stock official M919 Odin flash firmware and keep it in a good safe place so if or when you feel you want to
to restore your phone to the official stock unrooted state as it was when you first purchased the phone you will be able to do just that.
If you keep your phone stock and unrooted all you will accomplish is having a crippled phone and you will not be able to enjoy it to the
fullest extent.
You will not be able to use many of the useful and productive apps from the play store because a lot of the better apps, mods, themes
and audio/video software will require root access or they will not work. Same holds true for most any app/mod/theme found here in XDA.
There are cwm/twrp flashable rooted roms which contain all the bloatware that the stock official unrooted M919 odin flash roms have so
even if you are rooted you can still enjoy whatever benefits there are for having bloatware, advertisements without being crippled by not
having the abilty to install apps/mods/themes from the market or any other place whether they require root or not.
Makes Sense...

I personally enjoy the rooted phone much more since I'm able to use the tether feature on a custom rom.
The answer is yes, always yes.
1. Delete bloatware (stock OS partition is HUGE) You can open up a lot of memory and save battery life.
2. Control over device options/customization (see xda video and other posts)
- I hated the LOUD t-mobile start-up/shutdown sounds, being able to change the splash screens and remove sound was a big plus for me.
3. COMPLETE backups. (Games, App Data, Certain system settings or directories, etc)
4. Custom ROMs/Kernels (I haven't felt a need to OC at all, but the customizations and improvements to efficiency and battery life using the hard work of devs here really improves the overall experience using the device)
5. You can un-root if necessary.
+1 for rooting.
Sent from my SGH-M919 using xda app-developers app
I posted a similar response in a similar thread recently, but I son,t feel like I can over say this.
Root it.
Do not pass go.
Do not collect $200.
Go directly to root.
Everyone will see how super awesome your phone is and want to be just like you. People will form fan clubs to celebrate your greatness. Women will throw themselves at you because rooted phones scream "Alpha male". You will have to do occasional autograph appearances and ribbon cutting ceremonies for various business and park openings as a result.
After a while all the added responsibility and living in the public spotlight might start to wear you down. That is the only down side.
But due to your increased popularity you will get more phone calls and text messages. And every time you answer one you will do it on your rooted phone and you will be reminded of how much cooler you are than everyone else because of the nifty mod you flashed earlier that day, and you will remember that it's all worth it.
Also you get to change the color of the clock and stuff. So that's super cool.
I mean I'm kidding, obviously. But there is a definite coolness factor to rooting and modding. Nearly everyone who sees my phone asks how I made it completely orange. (Clock, icons, menus, etc...basic cyanogen theming stuff. Nothing fancy to any cyanogen user) They are mesmerized by this.
And that is just the superficial stuff. If you set it up properly you can double the battery life of a rooted phone over stock. Disabling bloat, using a battery friendly governor, under clocking, etc...its all so much better than stock. I'd take a 2 year old rooted phone over a brand new top of the line stock phone any day.
Sent from your phone. You should be careful where you leave that thing.
Haha, alright ill give it a try.

Keep in mind that once you are rooted, you can choose not to use root features.
If you aren't rooted, you can't suddenly decided you do want to use a root feature.
Its once of those better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it situations.

After many years with Android...

This SGS4 is a piece of bloated crap!
I have had it now for months and all it does is freeze up, bog down and force me to battery pull like it was my G1 years back. WTF I have had all the previous galaxy's many HTC phones and I just dont understand this. My phone is completely stock and the only thing I changed was adfibg the goigke keyboard and textra. What gives

you might want to root and delete all the bloatware it really helps all the extra tmobile apps and stuff or flash a international rom they are usually great
I honestly did not want to do all of that and I dont see why this phone needs to have that dome to function like you should expect it too
I'd flash wicked 7.

Once again that's not the point
This isn't an "Android" problem.
If you want a pure Android experience, get a Nexus. Simple as that. You're forgetting the great thing about Android. So many customizations. Yes, Touchwiz may be a little laggy, but heck, it does have some pretty awesome features. If you want to go with a barebone experience, either get a Nexus or don't complain and flash another ROM, simple as that. (Note, I'm not flaming you. I can understand why you may be feeling like that.) But if you want something simple and boring, get an iPhone, lol. Keep in mind Android is still relatively young. And it's growing at a fast pace. 4.4 is around the corner and there's always innovation and updates. It is what it is, man. The S4 is a great phone.
Here's the thing, the people that never root phones, flash custom ROMS, etc.. they probably won't notice how much more potential this phone has, so they won't even care. But then there's people that have rooted and flashed and complain this phone is slower than their previous one. Well.. do something about it.

You're doing it wrong. Root it and delete things.

Could be a defective device. My s4 had none of those problems while stock. Have you tried a simple factory reset? If that doesn't help, I would call for a replacement.

I didn't say it was an android problem did you even read my post? I stated it was about the sgs4 and being overly bloated by Samsung

Yes I wiped it multiple times and it still does it
Damn. I was completely stock for a while and my S4 never froze at all. Some lag here and there but that's expected when you got almost everything running. I'd say defective. Sh*t happens!

No idea what gives, but I'm stock and been running lots of apps, and Nova launcher for months with zero issues that you describe. Mine hasn't frozen or bogged down once, and I go days or weeks without rebooting. Whether it's a HW problem with your phone, a bad app, or some configuration issue I haven't seen, who knows, but this phone is rock solid for me.
My wife and I never had a problem when we were on stock. My friend experienced all the things that you are he ended up going back to an iphone5 instead of just letting me root and install a custom rom because he had the same thought that he shouldn't have to do that to make it run right

Worst Nexus Device I have ever owned

I have had this phone now for maybe 4-5 months. Coming from a nexus 5 I am really upset. The lag on this device is god awful. I cant even carry on a hangouts chat because the typing is so laggy. I constantly have to go close my recent apps to try to recover some ram in order to make the device speed even remotely bareable. My nexus 4 was crisp and snappy as was my nexus 5. I very rarely experienced any slowdown and now I am stuck with this device that is just so horribly slow.
Has anyone experienced this? Is there a way to fix this? I may just go plunk down to repair the faulty power button on my 5 and just use that. A much nicer device that cost me less than the 5x.

What have you tried already to speed things up? Also, what rom build are you on? I presume stock? Rooted or not?
The first thing I would suggest is a factory reset and/or flash the latest factory image.

I am on stock. not rooted. I have not rooted a device in some time. Perhaps the time has come to get back into the custom rom scene if only to increase performance.
I have tried deleting unused apps and cleaning up my storage space to see if that helps but it has not. I am on 6.0.1 of the stock rom.

What build number? Settings > about > build number.
I would still recommend trying a full wipe after being at least on the March build.

These threads annoy me. Especially when people haven't rooted or unlocked their NEXUS devices. Half the point of these phones is to unlock and root them without having to work too hard or get in trouble from your carrier. I don't think I owned this phone for more than a few hours before flashing a new ROM on it.
Many other people have had the same complaints as you and after spelling out the steps they should take to unlock, root, flash a new ROM and kernel, they're often much happier with their devices. The RAM thing is a joke, tbh. I think a lot of people read the threads and articles about how "The New Nexus 5 successor only has Two Gigabytes of Memory?!" and now everyone blames that on their slowdowns and lag issues.
Take some time out one night and unlock your phone, flash the newest radios, vendors, custom recovery, etc and flash a custom ROM. It's a breeze. If you ever did it on your original N5, you'll have no trouble with this phone. There are plenty of great ROMs to choose from. Then, if you'd like, flash a custom Kernel as well. The performance will be night and day. If you'd like to take it further, check out the Interactive Governor Tweaks thread and download a profile or two from there. It really improves the battery life and performance in most cases... All is not lost, my friend. If you do what I explained I am confident you will be much happier with your phone.
Exactly what Alcolawl said. The only reason I ever booted the stock ROM was to check "Allow OEM Unlocking". I am coming from a 6P and I have noticed absolutely no lag or stutter. The phone is a bit creaky, which I expected at a low price point, but the hardware is excellent. I didn't think anybody bought a Nexus and didn't unlock it and root it.

Totally get where you guys are coming from. I used to root every device and flash custom Roms all the time. I was flashing custom roms on the G1 before most folks even knew what android was. I still have a Nexus 5 in my closet with paranoid Android on it as well as a 2012 Nexus 7 with paranoid Android that got so dead without charging that now it won't even boot. Man really wish I could figure out how to fix that one.
My point is that I guess I've gotten used to not having to play with custom Roms(or having any desire to) My hope was that I wouldn't need to get into all that that's all. I'll go through and unlock/root and flash some Roms and that will be that. Thanks for the advice.

I ended up clearing cahce on a lot of different apps and also realized that esfile explorer has a recylce bin. It was storing all my deleted files. Cleaned that out and whoosh, fast again. Still think I'll root and play with some Roms though.

If you go through with all this and flash a custom ROM & kernel, let me know how it compares to stock would you? I have a rooted/unlocked 6p which I LOVE but my wife wanted something easier to handle so we got her the 5x. Her's has similar issues overall but unfortunately she's not really for me messing with her phone (sigh, I know lol). Anyways, am curious for an honest opinion, especially with a pure Nexus/ex kernel combo as my 6p works a dream with that Just figured I'd ask if ya happen to do it, otherwise no worries. Thanks!!

Awesome thank you!! Try a purenexus/ex kernel combo and let me know what you think! Also, what carrier are you on? Don't suppose Verizon by chance right? I only ask as I read a few posts in that thread about VoLTE not working, which I found odd as it works perfectly on my 6p.

I'm fully serious. My Moto X Pure wasn't working out for me so I sold it and bought this. If this phone didn't meet my expectations I'd buy a different phone. If the phone lags, sell it and buy something else that doesn't. It's not that hard of a concept to grasp.
