I have had this phone now for maybe 4-5 months. Coming from a nexus 5 I am really upset. The lag on this device is god awful. I cant even carry on a hangouts chat because the typing is so laggy. I constantly have to go close my recent apps to try to recover some ram in order to make the device speed even remotely bareable. My nexus 4 was crisp and snappy as was my nexus 5. I very rarely experienced any slowdown and now I am stuck with this device that is just so horribly slow.
Has anyone experienced this? Is there a way to fix this? I may just go plunk down to repair the faulty power button on my 5 and just use that. A much nicer device that cost me less than the 5x.

What have you tried already to speed things up? Also, what rom build are you on? I presume stock? Rooted or not?
The first thing I would suggest is a factory reset and/or flash the latest factory image.

I am on stock. not rooted. I have not rooted a device in some time. Perhaps the time has come to get back into the custom rom scene if only to increase performance.
I have tried deleting unused apps and cleaning up my storage space to see if that helps but it has not. I am on 6.0.1 of the stock rom.

What build number? Settings > about > build number.
I would still recommend trying a full wipe after being at least on the March build.

These threads annoy me. Especially when people haven't rooted or unlocked their NEXUS devices. Half the point of these phones is to unlock and root them without having to work too hard or get in trouble from your carrier. I don't think I owned this phone for more than a few hours before flashing a new ROM on it.
Many other people have had the same complaints as you and after spelling out the steps they should take to unlock, root, flash a new ROM and kernel, they're often much happier with their devices. The RAM thing is a joke, tbh. I think a lot of people read the threads and articles about how "The New Nexus 5 successor only has Two Gigabytes of Memory?!" and now everyone blames that on their slowdowns and lag issues.
Take some time out one night and unlock your phone, flash the newest radios, vendors, custom recovery, etc and flash a custom ROM. It's a breeze. If you ever did it on your original N5, you'll have no trouble with this phone. There are plenty of great ROMs to choose from. Then, if you'd like, flash a custom Kernel as well. The performance will be night and day. If you'd like to take it further, check out the Interactive Governor Tweaks thread and download a profile or two from there. It really improves the battery life and performance in most cases... All is not lost, my friend. If you do what I explained I am confident you will be much happier with your phone.
Exactly what Alcolawl said. The only reason I ever booted the stock ROM was to check "Allow OEM Unlocking". I am coming from a 6P and I have noticed absolutely no lag or stutter. The phone is a bit creaky, which I expected at a low price point, but the hardware is excellent. I didn't think anybody bought a Nexus and didn't unlock it and root it.

Totally get where you guys are coming from. I used to root every device and flash custom Roms all the time. I was flashing custom roms on the G1 before most folks even knew what android was. I still have a Nexus 5 in my closet with paranoid Android on it as well as a 2012 Nexus 7 with paranoid Android that got so dead without charging that now it won't even boot. Man really wish I could figure out how to fix that one.
My point is that I guess I've gotten used to not having to play with custom Roms(or having any desire to) My hope was that I wouldn't need to get into all that that's all. I'll go through and unlock/root and flash some Roms and that will be that. Thanks for the advice.

If you go through with all this and flash a custom ROM & kernel, let me know how it compares to stock would you? I have a rooted/unlocked 6p which I LOVE but my wife wanted something easier to handle so we got her the 5x. Her's has similar issues overall but unfortunately she's not really for me messing with her phone (sigh, I know lol). Anyways, am curious for an honest opinion, especially with a pure Nexus/ex kernel combo as my 6p works a dream with that Just figured I'd ask if ya happen to do it, otherwise no worries. Thanks!!

Coming from the Vibrant and G2X, I use to flash roms about once or twice, maybe more, a day! With this phone, I just think it's perfect the way it is. I want to run the OS the way Google intended without much intervention. I tried the HD rom last night and it looked and felt the same as the stock rom, so I quickly switched back. No offense to Mike, but if I'm gonna have something so similar to stock, might as well have stock with official support.
Anyone doing the same?

i refuse to stick with stock anything regardless of how 'good' it may be. even with this Nexus, i didn't like stock.
i want to be able to change things however i want them, including overclock/undervolt/etc...
the last time i stuck with 'stock' was probably when i had the original RAZR back in the day(that and the Rezound as i believe they're still waiting on root for that thing)
you'd be surprised what kind of battery life you get with a custom rom and kernel. it's a significant upgrade. that fact alone justifies going custom

I'm going to wait until the custom roms and kernels establish themselves before I go with a non-stock build. I will leave stock sooner or later though for sure.

I'm also going to be ruining rooted in stock room.
It is been a very long time since I don't see a clean stable room. Number one priority today is to support as many devices as possible, quality and stability comes last. Sad.

How could u go from flashing multi roms a day then out of all the phones u choose not do it with the nexus that's just unheard of
I used to flash a lot of roms on my old phone, trying to stick to stock on this one. I keep getting tempted though.. especially as I haven't had the 4.0.2 update yet. It's only a minor update but just the fact that I don't have it yet keeps bugging me and making me want to root

Nope, not unheard of at all. I have the same position.
This is the first phone I like 100% stock. I will probably get a custom kernel / cm9 when it comes out.
Im sticking to stock rom till my store warrenty is up. Just wanna make sure that the phone works the way its meant to before I start messing with it.
I came from the galaxy s captivate. I used to flash a lot but with the galaxy nexus, I didn't even unlock the boot loaders. I will just stay stock forever!

Waiting for things to get a bit better understood/stable before doing ROMs, but definitely will at some point for better battery life, tether etc...
I guess I'm waiting for Google to put out a very stable build that developers can go from. Google is very quick with updates so this should happen soon.
My previous flashing was done to make up for staggering shortcomings with the device and manufacturers that dragged their feet with updates. I don't think this will be, and hasn't been, the case with the Nexus.
4.0.3 is a good start for a base with roms but there are still some issues that I want officially resolved by Google before I start flashing a bunch of stuff from independent developers.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA App
Mine's still stock, I'm just enjoying ICS as it is for the moment.
When I do decide to root and flash ROMs/kernal, I'm just glad that the partitions aren't like the partitions on the GSII, the recovery and kernal on the same partition had me spinning for a while on my Sprint GSII.

I believe if you go Settings->About Phone->System Update, you can hit the button that says check for update and it will ping the server and ask if an update is available. You can do that if you want 4.0.2 which honestly why wouldn't you, it's just a bug fixer.
Like many others, I've rooted every other Android phone I've owned, usually within the day of purchasing it. However, in this case I don't feel a need. Maybe once a fully stable CM9 build is available I'll bother, but for now it's not worth my time and effort.
I will at least root and use wireless tether for now.
I am keeping mine stock for a few more weeks until the rooms start getting stable. I find that known issues get fixed in rooms much quicker than waiting for Samsung to address them.

And when I put the phone completely back to stock, it just never ran as good as it did when it really was stock before I started modding.

+1 Learnt the lesson from the developer tablet, the Xoom. Rooted it expecting great advantages and then discovered rooted Xooms couldn't rent movies, no longer got ota updates (but still got the annoying update messages)....
I flashed my HTC because they didn't have the gingerbread update for the Desire z for months and to get rid of sense. Flashed my Samsung SG2 to get rid of touchwiz.
But don't see any reason to mess with Google's best efforts - particularly with Wallet and the like being a big part of this phone's future (the thought of some stranger having complete control over my system when using my phone to pay for things worries me).
Still no update in Australia. Still on 4.0.1 and my phone is the Google direct version.

The chase stops when you stop looking for a ROM with all the features you want and make your own.
I think it depends a lot on how much you are willing to mod for example, when I went and upgraded to 4.0.2 my radio updated as well which made my GPS useless so I modded and downgraded my radio back and I have never been happier.
And once voodoo mod makes its way to the galaxy nexus I don't think it would be easy just letting it slip by...

So now you have to buy a phone and make your own software on top of it ?
I liked to flash mods on my Nexus One, it was fun, I found the CyanogenMod pretty good for me. But I did not root my Galaxy Nexus yet and I don't really feel the need to, except to get the official updates.
I think that as soon as Google released the 4.0.3 source code, they should have released the OTA for the Galaxy Nexus as well as the Nexus S. I compiled the official 4.0.3 from the source, but I can't flash it because I did not root my device. I find this a bit strange.

You're right. But rooting is not the real problem for me. My problem is unlocking and reseting the phone. I don't want to loose all my data (including game saves !) but the only way I can save them is ... to be root. I will do it eventually, but it still bothers me
I switched to Verizon from Sprint one week ago. I bought the Galaxy Nexus and my wife has a Droid 4 (after trading out the Stratosphere).
After the first week with the Galaxy Nexus, I must say I am very happy. I was using the Samsung Epic 4G Touch on Sprint, and at the time it was the best phone I had ever used. There are some features on this phone that do not stand up to the E4GT, but there are others that blow its doors off.
What I Like
Ice Cream Sandwich has been a great treat for me. I haven't been the biggest fan of the stock launchers up until ICS. The entire interface is truly a pleasure to use. Some of the features I like are:
• The options given for the lockscreen are great.
• Face Unlock works very well, except in low light.
• The on screen buttons work very well and add a nice component to the OS. I love the fact that the buttons open up valuable real estate on the front of the device to allow for a larger screen. The merits of this shine through when watching videos in landscape mode.
• The Galaxy Nexus has a beautiful display. Watching HQ content in you tube has been a treat. Everything looks brilliant on the display.
• The stock keyboard in ICS is excellent. I began using it on my E4GT as a market downloadable version, and I must say, it may even be slightly better on the GN. The word prediction is excellent and I find that even when typing fast I don't seem to make many mistakes.
• I love the app/widget drawer. The way they were integrated together works nicely. They are related, and thus should be together.
• The new multitasking button has become one of my new best friends. It is so simple to use and a lot less clunky than the old way of holding the home button.
• The settings menu is even improved. Mostly, the aesthetics are improved, but I also find the data usage meter very useful and handy; hell it even shows data used while using wifi.
• I also like the new folder system used on the home screens. I am using that feature and because of the folders, I don't miss having 7 screens.
What I Dislike
There isn't much that I don't like about this phone, but there are a couple things I miss:
• While the screen is brilliant, the high resolution causes some notification bar displays I used to use too small to read.
• I wish the dialer would function in a way that while I dial a number it searches for, and displays, potential matches for me to choose from.
• I wish the notification bar had some toggle in it (I know that isn't a stock Android feature.
As for the switch to Verizon...
I have been very impressed with the service I have received from Verizon. I have contacted them a few times by phone and each and every time I have felt as though they actually care about my business and want to help me. They have been extremely pleasant. Coming from Sprint, where I always felt like I was a burden when I called. The representatives at Sprint seemed to be on the defensive before I even opened my mouth.
Also, the coverage and speed of the LTE network is very impressive. Sprints WiMax network was fast when I could connect to it, which was seldom. I am (almost) always connected to LTE and have regularly seen 20+ Mbps download.
In Conclusion
The Galaxy Nexus is a joy to use and the network is fantastic. The extra $20-30 a month for Verizon is well worth it in my opinion.

yeah what he said. I disliked those as well, once I rooted and installed Kang, I am so happy with the phone. Which is kinda a bummer now I have nothing more to complain about and nothing to search to install. OH HUM
Is this AOKP going to give me the stock experience I have grown so fond of?
Also, will it wipe my phone to install? I unlocked the boot loader already because I read that would wipe everything. I have not rooted yet though.

So which version of ICS is this based off of? Also, is the battery life improved from stock?
Its off 4.0.3 AOKP-TORO-Milestone 3 and I am running Franco Kernel with it.
I took it off the charger at 5am and its now 6 pm and I have about 40 percent battery left. and I use the phone all the time, texting tweeting calls pics. Its much better than stock, there are alot of mods you can do with it as well to save battery.
I am totally stoked about the phone now

Once you unlock the bootloader loading a ROM wont wipe the phone. It will keep files in tack on the phone
You will want to wipe data when you load or switch roms though. Wiping data in recovery will:

Hmmm, without wiping I dont believe so. Once you return to stock it will wipe your card for sure.
I used the Galaxy root tool kit. it is by far the easiest thing for rooting unlocking and relocking and returning to stock
Thanks bootsie. I appreciate the help. I'm hesitant to flash a rom right now because I am so happy with the stock build. I'm afraid to find something changed or missing and not be able to get back to stock without losing all my apps and stuff.

Make a backup of your stock Rom before flashing something else. Then you can flash back with everything in tact if you do not like anything else.

I just did the same thing 2 days ago. I had a ET4G and my wife had a Nexus S 4G. I have a GalaxyNexus now and she has the Motorola Razor. She was really close to getting the Droid 4 but I told her he would like the bigger screen better (she loves words with friends lol). Sprint has terrible service on my street and in my house. So I switched after 8 years. Im running MIUI right now. Still can't believe that MIUI has 4G working on this service.
I am with you on how much I like the nexus. After reading the forums and seeing how helpful people are here l going to unlock and root. Good luck with phone.

Yes just create a nand backup of your stock setup. You can return to exactly how your stock setup is down to the last file, text, call log, etc. It will be just as you left it.
Hello everyone. This is Clockworkmod Recovery v6.0.2.8 v1 for Optimus G Pro.
As you all know, it's 2nd-init recovery. That means if your phone bricks, only lgnpst will revive your phone.
First its how-to is same as the first one with small letters on it
1. Install application that I uploaded
2. Open it and Click 2nd-init recovery
3. Click Reboot recovery to see it worked.
As you know, we cannot change boot image. That will brick your phone.
And if you want to reboot recovery by pressing button, reboot it and you will see button flickering. Than you have to click any button. Fast.
That's all. And of course, you have to have your device rooted.
Thanks to: 985hPaKicK(WHO MADE THIS RECOVERY) and wkpark(who found out the way to increase font size, see this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=30818456&postcount=8)

Yes, you can
Are we supposed to get a couple fc once we press reboot recovery? Seems to work great otherwise. I just wanted to make a quick backup before I start removing bloat.

I'd not remove the bloat if I were you. If your phone boot loops, there is no way into recovery. I'd just freeze the apps using titanium or something instead.
To answer your question, I get the force closes as well.

I dont remove either. just freeze or disable.
I dunno who created this recovery but until we get a unlocked bootloader theres no way to use this if your softbrick or bootloop. The dev should look into implementing a timeout feature when you reboot your device. The moto phones have this kind of recovery with bootstrap and safestrap. We could use it until we crack this thing.

The problem is for some reason LG devices get no love from DEV's. Unless its a NEXUS. Its bull crap the S4 and HTC devices get cracks and roms.

Yeah ive noticed that. Im debating exchanging mine for a s4. Not sure yet. I have to have at least some kind of aosp or custom rom - kernel.
I'm going to remain patient, but for sure if I don't see any kernels fixing the phone's ability to render live wallpaper without lag I'll be sselling mine and buying the s4 developer edition. That is, as long as it still supports the remote control feature.

Why not just get a regualr s4? Once the bootloader is unlocked you will have aosp. Thats what ill do if i exchange. To be honest ive gone through the lg forums and aside from the nexus 4 these phones dont get much if any love. Shame as this phone is great and has great potiential. Shame i only have a week and 1/2 left to exchange if i have to. I dont see the bootloader being cracked by then.

I have an LG Nitro and there have been quite a few roms (most importantly official CM support) on our forums. I even installed the ubuntu test thingy on mine. But I'll have to admit I do get jealous of some of the other phones who don't just get occasion roms but regular releases of most of them.
welcome to the lg team guy....lolllll when i bought mine last week, one of my motivation was the fact that i"m not such a "flasholic"...so since for now we can root this thing and flash rom (stock rom) with cwm...a debloated rom will follow for sure, i"m positive!!! but dam, compair to sammy on DEV side...its like running in ferrari and fall in "mini" lollll
lg just entering in the "top" device with the g pro...even if the note 2 is 6 month old...its the first phone that i saw lg putting specification beyond sammy in phablet side.....:good:

What? CM going corporate? Say it isn't so!!
Well, it is:

What does this bode for the future of development? Are you psyched, or sickened?
I feel a little... Used. We have all been nothing more than beta testers. Of course we knew that all along, but it was cool when it was rogue and edgy and "stickin' it to the Man". Now, it's sort of... Ewww.
First we learn that Android 5.0 aka Key Lime Pie is really going to be Android 4.4 Kit Kat ... A phone linked to a candy bar with the catch phrase "Give me a break." Now this! What's next? Android becomes WinApple Omega? Can Skynet be far off?

Maybe a hardware company that's on the ropes that has a "relatively" new operating system based on Linux with an Android runtime.......?
Justy sayin.

CM could go with fruit. Skip A and start with.....

That could only be successful if CM was the driving force and not the hardware vendor. RIM has already demonstrated their inability to adapt to a changing market.

Yeah, but a lot of them are CM based.
OK, I am officially officially done with the whole Custom ROM scene. I have just spent half the night trying to get CM 10.2 to reboot after going into recovery 2.6.3.0. Tried wiping data and restoring it, wiping dalvik and cache, all the normal tricks. I even tried going back to TWRP 2.5.0. The only way I could get it to reboot was by wiping my data altogether, which is just too annoying. Regardless of what others' experiences may have been, mine has been getting progressively worse with each attempt at using 4.3 with the recoveries we currently have available. I've missed several important calls and test messages that just were never delivered. There is just no point to it anymore. Stock, debloated and customized to my own personal tastes is quite adequate to my needs and certainly more reliable than the mess I've been dealing with all night.
So, thanks for the laughs and the peeks at new functions. It's been real, it's been fun, but it has not always been real fun. I'm done.

There are only a few (such as Orion) that ate based on CM.

From the dev of Focal, which was pulled from CM.
And here is Steve Kondik's response.

Reading all that I am reading it sounds like they still plan to keep the open source android rom part but start a completely new platform that will be different from apple and android. So honestly this is a good thing for Cyanogen and also for gadget lovers as a whole. The only thing I hope for is that all that have contributed over the years gets what they deserve. Whether it is a settlement or profit share even. It would only be right.
Big thank you to CyanogenMod and all that have contributed to more enjoyment out of what started out as just a mobile phone.

Exactly why I haven't even given a thought to trying out 4.3. Not getting into that whole mess. I love my AOKP 4.2.2 so sticking with what works.
I guess I'm not bothered by Cyanogen's move as I wasn't really fan to begin with. But I'll be interested in seeing what they'll be up to in the future.

I didn't cause any of my issues. I've been doing the custom ROM thing for a long time and always follow very careful procedures. I wipe everything 3x, I never dirty flash and I always manually install my apps only after the ROM has been installed. So how have I caused my issues? The darn 4.3 ROMs just don't reboot properly and aren't reliable. I didn't have these issues with the 4.2.2 ROMs.
Besides, the OP is about CM going corporate. I didn't cause that either.

If you knew 100% what you were doing, you wouldn't be running into these issues. I've been running cm10.2 since day 1 and its been absolutely 100% here. I have been having better than stock performance also so i dont understand why you are whining about that either. I also have no idea what you are talking about with "not rebooting properly" as i have not run into any issues with 10.2 whatsoever and have never heard anything on that topic. If you have an issue, please take a log of the issue and submit it as whining and complaining will not fix an unknown issue.
