Hey
I had some issues with the Touchscreen of my GNex, i thought it was nothing special, because i had something similiar on my xoom too but it only occurred 1 time on it.
Then i've tested the GNex for some Days and i'm now very sure it's a hardware defect, but i want to know what you think of it.
I'll try to describe it a bit:
Sometimes (i sadly don't know when or why) it launches a line of touch-inputs rapidly on the right side of the screen. It's really annoying because it starts a bunch of apps or commands...it even shuts down my alarm in the morning sometimes.
The big problem is, i'm on Vacation for 2 weeks soon...means i can't give it back to warranty now...maybe there is a way to disable the sensetivity of the touchscreen because these inputs are very light. With a testapp i was able to see that it's half as "heavy" as when i tap the screen with a finger.
I've attached a vid of it, maybe someone could say if this happens on their GNex too...i doubt no. (The vid is not that good, please apologize)
Link: http://goo.gl/QnTy7 (Sorry Attachment doesn't work somehow)
No one out there with a idea what's wrong with my gnex? :-(
I would go to verizon and see if there is anyway they could give you a replacement considering your circumstances. Or maybe they would give you a loaner phone while yours is being serviced.
Does it look a bit like this behavior?

I would get a replacement phone from T-Mobile but that would be a real old phone and I have a nexus s here so maybe use this.
But would be nice to know if it's a hardware defect or if it's fixable....
I'll try to exchange it after my vacation.
Yes it's the same behaviour as in that video. I uploaded one too in the first post and mine is only a bit more right on the screen...
I'm really disappointed because my nexus s has some defects too and I'm curious if all Google devices has some defects....
Thanks for the answers
0 defects on my Nexus S
0 defects on my Galaxy Nexus
damn thats gotta suck :s
maybe flash any custom rom? hope you have your bootloader unlock or any pc close
I'm using CM9 since I got the GNex, will try reflashing it tomorrow with full wipe. Will report then.
Hope it's only the ROM, the screen works perfectly aside from this.
I didn't know you were running I custom rom, I would definitely try and do a full wipe and load the rom again or a different one.
The problem on my gnex went away after the ota update from 4.0.1 to 4.0.2.

Most likely something that you have installed on your phone isnt liking ICS. Hard to narrow down if you have alot of apps installed.
I have had mine for 6 days now and not had a single Sleep of Death and I havent seen too many comments about it so I dont think its a problem with ICS directly.
Mark.

Happened to me too! My phone was ultra hot too! I had charged it over night with my computer. can anyone who had this issue confirm it was through computer charging?

Exactly, it is way way too likely that turning your CPU down will result in 'Sleep of death'

Well its still worth noting. SetCPU never did this on my DHD
I had exactly the same thing last night, I even made my own thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1360847&page=2
I even wrote a simple app for logging the battery temperature and time, so I'll leave it on next night and I'll see what happens. Because I'm pretty sure my phone switched off due to overheating, as it was really, really hot in the morning, after I switched it on the battery was at 46C.
I'm afraid I can confirm that I have experienced the same "sleep of death" problem twice now. I can't remember what I was doing the first time, but the second time I was only browsing and I know I didn't have any apps installed because I had previously reset my phone. I've only had the phone for two days now and if it does it again I might have to send it back.
I expected a glitch or two, but with the volume bug and other annoying things like the lack of flash and poor camera quality, I'm beginning to regret my purchase. Although I love the ice cream sandwich experience, I'm now thinking of getting the Galaxy Note instead, and waiting for ICS to arrive on that next year. At least then I will be able to watch iPlayer in the meantime.
Mines done it about 4 times. Pre installed Movie maker seems to induce it.

Had a sleep of death for the first time yesterday - the only "different" thing I did during the day was use spotify so there maybe something in that!
Same again last night, woke up this morning and phone was on but wouldn't wake. Notification light was on solid. Was plugged in at wall all night, didn't seem too warm when I held it.
Time to start debugging I guess
I've had this issue twice too.
I do not have spotify installed, and the phone was NOT hot at all. Not even warm!
I was just in gmail, sent a mail, then pressed the home button, and black.... gone.
Had to pull battery.
Thinking of having phone replaced by Handtec. I know this is probably a software glitch, but the volume bug, and the fact my unit was one that handtec had "tested" etc, I might just ask for a brand new one from the new flashed batch due next week.
Wtf! Just how wide spread is this??? Seems like too many people are having this issue.
Phone hasn't even arrived yet and I'm already starting to question my purchase.
1 more bug and im cancelling my order !
Well, it's the first device with ICS so I expect there will be a few bugs in the future which will need to be fixed. That's the reason why I'll go for the Nexus ... it's a nice piece of hardware but even more important is that it will be the device which gets the fixes first.
Did anyone check to see if you've had an OTA for the volume ghost fix and this problem has spawned instead? Seems like a fairly new problem if you have followed the forum.

Hi everyone,
New GN,
ITLF41
19250UGKL1
yakjuux
4.01
I've only unlocked it, haven't done anything else.
I was only replying to a text message and in the middle of text, GN froze and the screen went black with a white line across top of screen.
Seemed to occur while the auto-rotate function was trying to rotate screen.
I also noticed the auto rotate on my GN does not work well at all. Sometimes it does, sometimes it will not no matter how long I wait.
Nothing worked, had to pull battery.
Seems fine after replacing battery.
I wouldn't be concerned but for the fact that I was not using 3rd party apps or a different rom. The force 2d option is off.
Is maybe something funky with the GN auto-rotate feature in 4.01?

Yes, versions 4.0.2 and 4.0.3 fix a LOT of little issues with the GN. They really should've released the phone with one of those 2 versions rather than 4.0.1.
I don't think you should be too worried about battery pulls unless they happen more often than you like.
Just like a computer...rebooting or pulling the battery at least once a week is recommended!

I'm a Network Admin for a large School Board. I know its strange I know nothing about smart Phones but I do know much about Wireless/Routers/switches and Computers.
If your rebooting computers once a week something is amiss....lol
I have servers and clients that have uptimes of 1 year+ before an update requires me to down a server or re-image a client.
In my case, if what had happened to my NEW GN happened on one of my OES2 Linux servers, Id be scrambling until the issue was found and fixed and i'd be none to happy.
But alas, a server is not a cell phone.
I hope it was a just a freak isolated incident.

One very simple reason: If you pull the battery in a bad moment, e.g. right when the hardware is writing something to the Flash memory, you might (soft-) brick your phone and lose all the data on it.

Well because,
If I have to keep pulling the battery (which is NOT occurring thankfully so far) then I would say something is wrong and its not just a software bug. I would call it a blue screen of death in computer terms.
That could be anything from a hardware fault (Memory/CPU/IO sub system..etc) That would for me, mean taking it back.
A hard reset may temporarily fix the issue. But it doesn't solve the underlying problems.
I'm hoping the error was a one off. If it never occurs again, then we're good to go.
If it does, its goin back.
Same thing happened to me, the weird thing is it happened right after I completely reset the phone...

Yea its strange...
In my case the Auto rotate feature seems to be the common theme for funkyness.
Sometimes its quick, less than a second, sometimes it doesn't move at all.....
Then, a hard lock.
I realize that 4.02 and .03 fix some bugs but I have the Canadian ver. and google is not gonna update OTA for my NG.
I'm not ready for the whole, flash to "google's" stock rom yet. I just learned to unlock it...lol. If it locks again i'll try that. If it don't i'll leave well enough alone.
Oh by the way, to the Admins, sorry for not posting in the Q&A section. I though i was in the Q&A, my mistake.
Please by all means move the thread.

Actually, I have to replace cmos batteries all the time.
Usually they are good for 4 or 5 years but sometimes not.
Some people don't know what "Hit F1 to continue" means and I get calls all the time.
So yes, its quite common to have to pull a bad battery when dealing with 2,000+ PC's ...

Because I use a otterbox with my Galaxy Nexus and it's not very pleasent to keep taking my phone out of it's hard shell case and putting it back in?
Pulling the battery is always a last resort. If the phone is frozen, that is fine to pull the battery or you can hold power on the phone and it'll turn off by itself (not sure if this is in the GN but it was in Galaxy S1).

You are correct. Its not a common everyday thing for most.
I was just suggesting a legit reason for why anyone would need to pull a computer battery.
On another note, i agree with you that having an otterbox case makes it even more of a pain to have to pull the battery.
I just had another freeze up while trying to get back to the main page using the launcher.
Im getting worried now. I've had this phone for 2 weeks and it was great until today....
I think I'm gonna bring it back to virgin just to be safe before my 30 days is up.
If its just software then the new one will do it as well but at at least I'll know thats what it is and either wait for samsung updates or update manually.
Again....nowhere in my response did I say u HAVE to pull the battery every week....I simply said its best if u do, nobody is gonna force u to! But when u do get a bug...pull that battery, and if it keeps happening, send it for warranty...simple

It looks like I may have done it again. On my first galaxy nexus I had it for over a year and then all of a sudden I had no signal and whenever I tried to call I got a mobile network not available. Now it has happened again. Can the radios malfunction for no reason or is flashing Roms too much a bad thing for it. Just trying to get more info on it since googling did yield much help...thnx in advance

I'd like to know too, since this is pretty much what happened to me. I "only" flashed 12 times total. I am under the impression that the NAND memory is good for a couple of hundred writes.
Yea its pretty weird and I'll say maybe random but it all ready happened twice. Not sure if its only an issue with Verizon galaxy nexus or all of them but right now I'm in the process of unrooting and relocking.

It could also be your ROM/Kernel combination. Might try changing ROM's and/or Kernels to see if that helps. Our phones can be temperamental sometimes

yea i had my nexus since launch day and rooted it and started flashing in about a week. but after 13 months of constant flashing whether it be nightlies or major updates, the signal just burned out or something, not really sure what happened. When i went to a verizon store they were clueless as always (but to be fair its not like i brought up the fact that i was rooted or anything so they had no idea) and gave me a replacement and in one week the same thing happened again, just want to find out if it is possible to burn the radios or if its an LTE radio burn out?
So I'm guessing its a very rare thing to burn the radios.

My radios quit and I just replaced the sim card. After that all was fine.
I was running the tweeked rom on my Note 2 and was loving it, was running great for a few days...
Today the screen froze when I went to unlock and check a missed call. I am unable to get any response from my finger, nothing... The S pen does work though.
T-mobile tech knew nothing about how to fix it. I tried a different rom and still the same.
Any suggestions? Calibration? Anything? Thanks so much.
As it exists across roms, it regrettably sounds like a hardware issue. Have you tried flashing a stock odin? Likely won't help but it might be worth a shot.

Thanks for the reply. I am afraid that is a pretty big problem too, related to hardware. 10 minutes before the finger freeze I was just realizing how much I loved the phone with the Tweaked Rom and totally set-up.
Anyways, it's going back to T-mobile. I used Odin to flash to stock and used Triangle Way to reset the flasher... Now I am scared to root it and run a rom on the new one, but I know it was just a freak incident...
Just sucks, I hate getting a refurb replacement... I don't know what dirty, grungy, smelly pocket it's been in for a couple months, uh...

Reconnect the cable of LCD can fix this problem!!!!!! the casing of nexus 7 need to be opened, but it's not hard!
If you are not able to fix it, try to use the JWR66N version!

Does the black screen appear when you're doing something specific or is it completely random?

Try to use clean ROM, but still happen. Hope the problem relate to the software but not Hardware.

You should still have a warranty. I think this might be some sort of bug that could be corrected maybe. It seems weird for something like this to occur out of the blue. I may go back to stock to test or try a different Rom that didn't use cm as a base.

If the update and the factory reset doesn't work, I strongly recommend sending in the unit for RMA. While there, we can take a look at the hardware, and if needed, actually fix it for you.
My screen flicker (random black screen for a millisecond) went away after I checked the connection. I unplugged the screen, blew a little compressed air into the connection, and popped it back on. No screen flicker in sight after that.

I had the exact same issue and after reading this thread decided to take the plunge and check the connection. I am typing this on my Nexus now so I don't appear to have broken anything, however I think I have just seen the screen flash black so the problem may still be there.
Given disassembling the thing voids the warranty I would probably recommend not risking it for this issue. I'll let you know if I change my mind.
