Problems getting CWM Recovery installed - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

I am new to rooting this phone. I have previously rooted other phones but I am having some trouble with this one. I have root and SU access, but CWM Recovery doesn't appear to be loaded. It just boots up to an android recovery and nothing will flash. I downloaded ROM Manager and when I choose to flash clockwork recovery, I choose the Epic 4G option but then it just freezes. Not sure where to go from here?

Forget ROM manager. Flash a ROM of your choice then boot into CWM. Recoveries are included with ROMs on this phone. One recovery won't fit all like on other phones. I came from HTC Evo 4g so I feel your pain. To add to the fun, 9 times out of 10 a nand restore will only work with the very same cwm version that it was created with. If you flash a different ROM to get back to a previous one you have to reflash the previous ROM to be on the recovery you were on originally then restore your backup. A little confusing. Do a little research in the forums and flash away.

Also, do a search on QBking77. He has excellent videos and explanations for the E4GT.

I can tell you right now that you need to ditch rom manager.. That has drove some people to brick city
-TeaM VeNuM Like A Boss

How do I flash a rom without the CWM? I downloaded the CM9 and one other one, and I get a signature verification failed.

Use odin to flash a safe kernel such as el26 then flash. Read some stickies under general and development section so you dont brick.

Hey OP - Here's a guide on Odin:
[GUIDE] Using ODIN to flash your Epic 4G Touch (windows only)
It's a lil outdated as far as Odin version, but the guts remain the same.
Here is an updated Odin thread by Crawrj:

Lost Rogue Recovery, still have root

I'm running VeNuM ICE 3.1.1 with FC22 Modem and Kernel. Apparently I used stock on the kernel during my last flash and lost my recovery. What's the easiest way to get it back since I'm already rooted and the Android System Recovery <3e> doesn't give me the option to flash anything?
Odin or mobile odin.

Cool, that's what I was thinking but i wasn't sure. Thanks!
I use mobile odin, it's easy. Download kernel tar to phone. In mobile odin press kernel, find the tar and hit go. It reboots the phone for you

I am a dummy and am in somewhat the same situation. I flashed aokp build 28 ics rom, right in the beginning of the thread it says 'dont flash from stock ics recovery' I had team rouge on ics rom, so I thought I was good. Now I just go to android system recovery.
Will the odin thing work for me too, or will I mess it up further. from what I have read, odin seems like what I am supposed to do.
sorry if I wasnt supposed to ask in this thread, but at least it shows I am searching!

i am rooted. I want to flash a different rom altogether, mainly because I don't know if a kernel I can flash that will let me boot into rouge or cwm.
the aokp that I flashed came with fc15 kernel and I wanted to flash to fc22 and that is when I realized I was only able to boot into android system recovery.

From what I've heard is not to mess with a Recovery while on ICS due to their being bricks... I'd suggest using the ODIN one click to EL29, then use autoroot package with option C, to install Rogue recovery and flash to a newer ICS ROM.

What id suggest is downloading chris41gs stock el26 recovery and use mobile odin to flash it. Then upon reboot go into recovery and flash whatever u want next. Then if u want to switch roms again or update, follow the same procedure.
thanks Febby & rsalinas1, I used sfhubs one click odin to stock, then installed FC24 with cwm and I am good to go. good (cheap) learning experience for me.

[Q] Start from scratch help due to stupidity!

Can't title it any better. I was running Mj's BLEND ICS, and have been having problems with reboots, etc. So I saw a new version out and wanted to try that. I rebooted and noticed CWM was gone, and it looked like a stock recovery.
So I was reading up a bit and moved over the new version to the SD, then while under that recovery, I made a HUGE mistake and hit the power (forgetting that's [enter]) and whatever it was on it formatted data/system and cache so the phone is now dead (luckily not bricked).
On boot it sits at the Samsung title but that's it. I DO have access to both recovery (which is NOT cwm) but also have access to ODIN (huge + IMO).
So, I had the following;
BaseBand: 57 : 10.10 5.FD19
Kernel: 3.0.15-SPH=D710.FD26-XL467198
So naturally my question is what to do next? Back in my evo day's I ran CW7 and was very happy, I see C9 is out but the docs I saw said coming from GB, where I HAD ICS).
So the million dollar question, how do I proceed? Since I have access to ODIN, I would like to either;
a) restore a brand new stock rooted ICS for the g2 (note I am on sprint)
b) move back to either blend, or even more like to try c9.
Thanks as always to the group for all read/replies, out of all my posts/fun, this was my first facepalm!
Try miui I here it has wimax

Done, and worked like a charm. What is the best way to keep current with full version's of stock ROM's, modem's, etc. I see threads pop up, I know the letters refer to months, etc. but is there a standard place people look or subscribe?

Waiting on part 2. Past few ROM's have had their bugs, I do want to get CWM for backup purposes, but will do in a few.
Thanks again.

Didn't think so, I would equate it to an ok linux boot partition but the other partitions were wiped (which is why once I could get into ODIN I knew I would be ok, just wanted to make sure I had the correct stock ROM)

[Q] Installed Sonic R6, can I Odin to stock?

I successfully followed the directions for using the no-flash-counter-increment stock+root, then installed clockworkmod recovery with adb dd, then installed Sonic R6. If I wanted to go back to stock+root, could I just Odin the no-flash-counter-increment stock+root?
This procedure worked great on my old Vibrant, but on the Vibrant, the Odin back to stock cleared the user partitions, but when I did the Odin stock+root on the S3, it rebooted with all of my settings/apps/etc. intact.
To be safe, I'm intending to reboot to recovery, wipe data/cache/dalvik, then reboot to download mode and Odin again. Is this a sound plan? (Sorry for the newbie question, but the Odin differences between the Vibrant and the S3 make me nervous.)
it came back with the settings and apps because you have to wipe before going back to stock, and if you are going back to stock, depending on what rom you are using, you will have to root again.
With the custom recovery you can flash away without increasing the counter.

Just flash one of the stock roms in yhe dev section and you'll get your stock + root just like when you originally rooted.

officially confused about how to root.

while im not a newbie on getting root on htc phones im new to this phone. i have firmware fh13 which i assume is fixed with the emmc cap erase bug. but im confused on how to root as most methods show up to ff18? do i have to downgrade to root and what custom recovery do i need? i read some pages cwm is not accepted and some that say it is? i read about odin but when i load that up it confuses me more than ever. i have ics 4.0.4 on the phone. thanks for the help.
All you need is the FH13 rooted one click tar file, put the phone in to download mode volume- + power and run the tar file.
There are two versions, the full restore will wipe everything, the no data will keep your apps and data intact.

As for recovery any of Agat63's kernels or the Kuban kernels in original development are safe from the brick bug
If you want to flash A.O.S.P roms then you will need the El26 kernal or Chris41g's Cwm6 also in the other development thread

Phone not booting after Odin Flash. Help?

So heres the back story:
The phone had CWM Recovery and had CM 10.1 nightly but I was unhappy with it.
I tried to flash from odin using the root66 pre rooted UVDJA rom
Didn't boot. It got to the Samsung bootanimation and just keeps glowing.
Tried root66 UVALJ4 same thing no dice
What can I do?
I assume I'm missing something and I still have Odin so I know I'm pretty sure I'm not totally boned.
In Odin I am clicking PDA and loading the .tar.md5 from the root66 .7z and clicking start.
Thanks
Fun story. I went into recovery and wiped and it works... Meh.
Thanks guys
BEST BET YOUTUBE OR GOOGLE QBKING77 ROOT S3 HE HAS EVERY CORRECT METHOD
I posted a response how to fix this
In another thread
Just download the stock jellybean tar file for t999 S3 QBKING77 VID SHOULD LEAD U TO FILES U NEED
Make sure to Uncheck all 3 boxes In Odin and rename the file delete the. Md5 it should be just
. Tar
Once odin says pass pull battery and reboot
Don't mess with flashing a custom odin rom just find a stock 4.1.1 with or without root
The best root method is using root from recovery zip when rooting I don't use the tool kit crap.
And ditch cwm that why it's jacked
Use twrp recovery download goo manager from market
Initially u have to flash cwm to root after u flash cwm. tar Then you download Goo manager and hit menu and install open recovery script then u have twrp recovery
Start fresh is your best bet

Your first mistake was not making a nandroid backup and u should have flashed a zip rom if u wanna play with roms not odin. Odin is Mainly good to revert to stock, ROOT or fix a bricked phone
always flash roms with just zips

Or try to download a rom zip on pc
Transfer it via usb to the s3 internal memory
First reboot Into cwm mount usb and transfer the rom of choice u download on the pc
If u have cwm still u may be good just be sure to wipe data, dalvic and cache first.
Choose install
