Ok... So my Epic 4G is pretty out of date... Running 2.3.6, GINGERBREAD.EL30 stock rooted.
I'd like to update it to newest stock (and wipe the phone)
So I downloaded the SPH-D700-FC09-8Gb-REL.tar.md5 file
Install the drivers... run ODIN... do download mode... Nothing on Windows 7 pc #1. Tried 3 different cables.
Next went to windows 7 PC #2... Still no dice
Windows 7 PC #3... nothing
So then I thought... Hmmm maybe Heimdall will help me out.
I uninstalled all drivers and Samsung crap from all 3 computers... Zadig detects nothing on any of the computers... If I force list all devices it actually shows an unknown USB device on one of the three...
So then I though... Maybe I should install Linux... that doesn't need drivers right?
Install Ubuntu... install Heimdall... Boot into download mode... STILL NOTHING! "Failed to detect compatible device!"
Wow...
So anyways...
What gives?
I do have ClockworkMod Recovery 3.0.0.6 installed... Maybe that could help?
You could just flash fc09 deodexed/rooted and upgrade both CWM and the modem.

That's the rom. Since you're having so much difficulty getting Odin to work, I'd say stay on BML.

The stock Samsung cable from my wife's S3. (with the weird plug shapes)
A generic white cable that I've used to flash my S2 twice.
And the old stock Samsung cable from my Samsung moment. (Flashed my moment many many times with it)

Well for some reason CWM got stuck auto-converting all my partitions to ext4 (I have no idea why it did that...)
So I tried installing sleeperRom (for the ext4 support) but it just sits at the samsung logo doing nothing now...
Guess I'll have to try and find a compatible cable... Or a PC running Windows XP / Vista.
Found an LG cable... no worky either windows / linux / odin / heimdall
(The white cable immediately detected my S2 in download mode via Heimdall...)
Interesting... I cannot mount the sdcard from CWM.
E:Unable to open ums lunfile (No such file or directory)
Also, now CWM is saying my mount points might be RFS again...
I also get errors mounting cache and system in CWM... no explaination though.
1.) I'd highly suggest getting a cable from the link I provided. They ship very fast and the prices are dirt cheap, but quality is all there. (Don't let price dictate the image of quality in your head.)
2.) Use the USB ports on the back of your PC since they are attached directly to the motherboard. Do not use any port on the front as it is most likely an emulated port. Definitely do not use a laptop dock USB ports, as those are emulated as well.
3.) It may also be worth while to format your SD card. Back up the contents and use your PC to format the card. Replace only the necessary files you need and leave the junk off of it.
4.) If you're able to get Odin to recognize your phone after taking the steps above, then completely start from scratch. I'd even repartition the thing for good measure.

Should be fine. Correct pin type.
are you using a USB port from the back of the machine (if pc) and if laptop have you tried all USB ports sometimes a port will have a lower voltage esp if they are in the front face of a tower and it makes transfers on the epicmtd crap out
I use the back ports... Two towers and a laptop.
I have a monoprice cable on the way. Should be here monday.
Ill post back then if I get it working or not... (although im not optimistic about it...)

First and foremost, been a long time lurker here (first time poster) on XDA... and the community here is just outstanding.
So I've decided to root my epic, everything was great. I used the one click 2.5CWM root, and realized I wanted to try out another rom that wasn't compatible. Reflashed with the( ReRFS.Format.ROM.EC05 ) (since it kept me stuck on the samsung black screen) then went ahead and flashed the zip for CWM 3.0.0.6 with viperrom,...
Now here's where it gets interesting... I want to be able to revert back to a stock rom, and flash syndicate... but for some reason my CWM wont allow me to flash any .zip files from SD card. It says "failed to mount /sdcard". i formated it on my pc, it reads / writes fine, but anytime i boot into clockwork, it can't mount my sd card. I can still boot into my phone, it's still usable for daily usage, but it just doesn't look like what I like.
Now I've tried running Odin, but when im in the download mode, odin will not recognize my phone being plugged in. I've downloaded the proper drivers, for both my win7 x64 and 32 bit computers, tried every USB port etc... and it still wont work.
any idea on what I can do to get my CWM to work?
Use Odin with a non-stock cable.
I've tried it with 4 different data cables, 2 Samsung OEM, and 2 generics...
Have you tried a different PC, or Heimdall?
Make sure you're using Odin 1.61, the correct PIT, and the EC05 TAR.
http://k0nane.info/rom/odin-pit.zip
http://k0nane.info/rom/SPH-D700-EC05-8gb-REL.tar
Also there is a small amount of phones that did not want to Odin correctly unless the battery was out. You can try that too.
So I've tried to run Heimdall, and i'm still experiencing the same issue that I was having with Odin.
Every time I plug in my device via USB (samsung OEM data cable, only cable i have that will prompt that a device is connected) windows will pop up with a message, device not recognized (unknown device in device manager when in download mode) it seems to be fine and it'll recognize it correctly when I have the phone running (booted up into the rom)
I ran the zadig.exe for the drivers, and nothing seems to work.
Instead of Odin, try the SWUpdate for EB13, it is much less fickle
Place your phone in download mode (keyboard #1 and the power button) and see if it will connect/install
If It works, you can then move on to either upgrade to EC05 using the stock update zip, or install CWM and flash your FAV ROM
My comp doesn't seem to want to recognize the phone anymore... everything is "unknown device" now
Yeah get your hands on a blackberry cable. My guess it will help your cause. Make sure the drivers are installed on your pc as well.
im just going to reformat my netbook and do a fresh install on the drivers, too tires of the "guess work" i'll keep you guys posted on how that goes
SUCESS!
my epic is back to full stock via Heimdall. (took a little playing around to get)
@qbking77 - Thanks for the tip, I ended up using a 7" black berry data cable, and heimdall recognized it.
The only thing now though, all of the wires i have now, don't seem to let me use One Click Root CWM 3.0.2.5 I'll try it with my OEM samsung cable (that worked before) when i get home, I'll keep you guys posted.
Thanks again!
I'm having problems getting my phone recognized by Heimdall (both Windows and Mac) and Odin (Windows). Here's the situation.
I have a practically fresh install of Windows with no drivers installed. I downloaded Heimdall to try and restore my Epic that has the [Phone] ! [PC] screen. I booted it into recovery mode, ran zadig, used a non-Samsung cable, etc. Heimdall's detect button recognizes my phone. However, when I actually try and do anything, I get "Error: libusb error: -12". I've seen some posts from different forums that say this is correlated with NOT having the zadig drivers installed, so I reinstalled them and rebooted for good measure. I still have the same problem.
So, I assumed that Heimdall was a lost cause and moved on to Odin. I'm following the how to in the dev forum and I installed the drivers mentioned there (x64 as I'm on Win 7 64 bit), downloaded the TAR, and so on. I open up Odin, put my phone in download mode, plug it in... and Windows says that it's an unknown device and can't recognize it. I've uninstalled/reinstalled the drivers several times, swapped out USB cables, and I can't find or think of anything more to do.
Help!
Okay when you open device manager and find the "unknown device" update the driver with your epic 4g drivers this will fix it hopefully... if not try and unistalling it pulling your usb out and popping out the battery and leave it out and plug in the usb and go into dlmode and it should reset things.

Well, I got it to work with Heimdall. It seems to have been a combination of the USB cable, USB port, and drivers that caused my problems. Here's how I got it to work for those who might have this problem in the future.
1. Uninstall literally everything related to Samsung, Heimdall, Odin, etc. This means uninstall any drivers, delete all instances of Odin, Heimdall, Kies, or any other software.
2. Reboot.
3. Download the latest version of Heimdall (1.3.1).
4. Remove the battery from your Epic and let it sit for about 15 minutes.
5. Get a fresh, non-Samsung (and possibly non Amazon, as that's another one that didn't work for me) USB cable. I opened a brand new Monoprice one that I had laying around.
6. Plug in the cable to a USB port directly on your computer.
7. Hold down power and 1 while plugging in the USB cable (this is with the battery still out).
8. Run zadig.exe, which comes with Heimdall. The computer should recognize it as a Samsung composite device or "Gadget serial". Install drivers.
9. Open Heimdall and flash. DON'T TOUCH ANYTHING UNTIL IT'S DONE!
Great. As long as u got it to work. Excellent.

i just want to root this newly acquired galaxy s2 but i have to use odin. i have installed the required file to my sdcard using the memory slot in the computer . but cant get the phone to detect.
what is other means i can root the device without using odin, if i cant get this phone to detect in my pc.

well if your 5 other gs2's worked.. then it's probably your phone. There are a couple instances of this. bring it to the tmobile store and show them that it won't connect and get an exchange.
if you don't want to do that... then try different usb ports and cables, but if that fails... then exchange it.

yeah, most likely its the microsd port because it doesn't even detect as a removable storage. there are a few other options, but doubt they will work.
Try to remove the samsung drivers and install kies instead.
if not then you can always remove all the usb installed drivers using USBdeview.. remove the samsung and android ones. Then plug in your phone and let it sit for 5-10 mins... but if it doesn't detect anything from the get-go then you need to do an exchange.

So I have done something to my epic, I don't know if it would count as bricked soft bricked or whatever but when I turn it on it bootloops on samsung logo but I can still enter download mode, So I figured I would flash a stock rom with odin and start over.
I went to this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1052813
downloaded necessary drivers
installed and tried to connect to odin
I've tried every combination of powering the phone with the computer, then putting in download mode
I've tried powering on with battery booting into download mode opening odin selecting pit and tar and then pluging it in and nothing.
when the pc does recognize the phone it says device not recognized or device malfunctioned.
I saw a post somewhere with someone saying I needed to "advanced install" the drivers. So whatever that means I tried to uninstall the device from device manager while plugged in in download mode and updating the driver to the 64bit samsung usb driver and it says "unknown device already has best driver installed"
the computer I'm using is an HP DM1-4010us not that I think it would matter.
If anyone has anymore suggestions, or can suggest a method or pattern of step by step what I need to do
maybe install the drivers in a different compatibility mode?
what about odin compatibility?
System UAC is turned off and firewall is off too just in case it may be blocking odin from communicating with comm ports so I know that can't be the issue.
Thanks for listening to my overly detailed and confused ramblings and thanks in advance for any advice or help offered.

Try a different USB port and cable the stock cable sucks azz try a blackberry cable.
Have you tried a different usb port?
I have always used the cable that came with my epic, are you using it?
I'd at least open odin, put your phone into download mode and then connect it to the PC and see if with the stock cable it is recognized. That will tell you perhaps the cable you're using isn't connecting right for odin's use.
do you have any other cell phone drivers on your PC? I've seen where they conflict. Remove all cells phone drivers, reboot, install the epic drivers for win7 64bit

Looks like you tried different USB cables (hopefully NEW ones), and different ports too. Along with Kies.
Try going into device manager (check show hidden devices too!) and uninstall ANY Samsung drivers or software you have installed. And reboot.
Download and install the latest drivers for the Epic 4GT [ http://org.downloadcenter.samsung.c...342248/Sprint_d710_USB_Driver_v1_3_2360_0.exe ]
Reboot your system. Then try to connect again.
If you have some type of Antivirus/Antispyware application you may also want to try and temporarily disable it too. I've seen this happen before.

I'm pretty sure it is not my antivirus because the other computer has the exact same antivirus. Also, in Device Manager, I enabled hidden devices and I do not see any drivers that seem like they have to do with Samsung.
Cool, but did you uninstall, reboot and then reinstall? And did you also disable the AV just in case?

I Use usbdeview to remove the devices

Uninstalling Kies right now. I will post after I reboot my computer.
I rebooted my computer, installed the drivers, and it still did not work. It's like my computer does not know how to use the drivers for my phone.

Wow not sure what else to try. If you've tried removing all drivers and re-installing them, using brand new USB cable(s), using different USB ports and disabling AV software and if it does connect and show up on other PCs yet it still wont show on one PC, then something is amiss with that machine.
When you're connecting your device you do have it on too right? I'm sure you do but just checking.
Did you install any ROM on this device already? There are some international versions that if installed on this device disable the USB port.
And does it show up on other machines just not this one?
If it shows up on other machines than it there is something amok with that PC.
If it doesn't then..
One last thing you might want to attempt is to download sfhub's One-click FF18 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1721229 download the 'reset data' and extract the exe.
Make sure you phone is off and NOT attached to the PC.
Run the One-click application.
Simultaneously Press and Hold [Power] [VolDn] until confirmation screen appears
Press [VolUp] to enter Download mode
Then Attach your phone via USB to the PC and see if it shows up on a COM Port (anyone is OK).
IF it does you can then at least flash the stock rooted FF18 and get the device to probably work correctly next time you plug it in after of course the entire Odin/Update finishes and your phone restarts.
Just reaching here but hope that helps.

This shows up on other computers but not this one. I did install CM9 onto my phone, but when I was on stock, this problem was still happening. This is most likely something with this PC. Thanks for you help.
Well then that's it. PC is the issue it won't show. Something is pooped.
Good luck.
Just to be clear, when someone says, 'try different usb ports' make sure you only use the ports on the motherboard and not the ones on the front of the case or door.
It's the difference between powered and un powered.
That one the threw me for a loop on my win7 when I usually use my laptop with xp.
