HELP| Odin wont detect, nor computer - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

This is probably my 6th galaxy s2, and all the prior phone have worked just fine, but this new one. so drivers are installed properly. I even plugged the galaxy s2 in other computer where drivers are installed too, but no luck.
my device manager says unknown device, and even the sdcard is not showing up in the file manager of windows 7.
i just want to root this newly acquired galaxy s2 but i have to use odin. i have installed the required file to my sdcard using the memory slot in the computer . but cant get the phone to detect.
what is other means i can root the device without using odin, if i cant get this phone to detect in my pc.

6th gs2 holy ****, you scammer.. jk or am i?
well if your 5 other gs2's worked.. then it's probably your phone. There are a couple instances of this. bring it to the tmobile store and show them that it won't connect and get an exchange.
if you don't want to do that... then try different usb ports and cables, but if that fails... then exchange it.

I buy and sell phones. I try different phones every couple weeks . Yes i tried different cable and tried different computers and usb port. But nothing worked. I think its my usb port from the phone

yeah, most likely its the microsd port because it doesn't even detect as a removable storage. there are a few other options, but doubt they will work.
Try to remove the samsung drivers and install kies instead.
if not then you can always remove all the usb installed drivers using USBdeview.. remove the samsung and android ones. Then plug in your phone and let it sit for 5-10 mins... but if it doesn't detect anything from the get-go then you need to do an exchange.

[Q] Epic won't root or show in 'My Computer'

Hi.
Have Boostmobile Epic that came unrooted.
Downloaded drivers and phone shows in device manager under com ports.
Tried 11 USB cables then saw a video from qbking and bought a blackberry to use its cable making it 12 cables, none work.
Tried 2 computers with Vista and Win 7 x64.
Epic won't communicate with either comp with debugging on or off.
As i said in topic, one click root won't work. Says Phone is not connected.
I also cannot sideload content onto SD card because it does not show in My Computer.
It has been flashed to boost so i assume it has communicated with a PC in the past.
What can i do to fix this?
Reboot pc and phone then try again. If that doesn't work then uninstall drivers from pc then install again. Reboot pc after install after reboot plug in epic then wait for it to finish installing drivers then reboot both again then use odin.
You can also connect the phone with usb debugging on, then go into device manager on the computer and look for "other" or samsung android in USB section. Click on that and select update drivers and let windows update search and install drivers...it takes awhile.
just did the uninstall drivers then reboot both thing.
Driver installation shows device ready to use as...
SAMSUNG USB Composite Device
SAMSUNG Mobile Modem #2
SAMSUNG Mobile Modem Diagnostic Serial Port (WDM) (COM5)
All ready to use.
But Still not showing in my computer for file transfer or working in usb debugging mode for root.

Try the update driver choice in device manager. The CDC driver is missing. I think it loads 5 drivers if I remember correctly with USB on...yeah the mass storage driver is missing too. Let Windows update find them all.

Hi, thanks for help.
Just tried uninstalling everything and letting windows find drivers. Windows found a different driver package from S3 studio or something but I still get no mass storage or root.
I've read you can root and install roms without a computer Guess that will have to be my route.
As far as mass storage goes... It's annoying but I pulled the back off and put SD card directly into computer
You are sliding down the pulldown on your epic screen and pushing mount sd card for mass storage right?

Yeah, the robot pic turns from green to orange but it never actually connects to either computer.
Going to my brothers house soon to check his 2 computers, he says his Thunderbolt will only work on one.

Some computers are finicky and will only work on the USB port used to install the drivers. Odin only works on the left side of my laptop and mass storage works on the right...go figure!
The fact that the phone thinks it connects and the computer probably makes the connection noise shows there is still a driver problem. Did you reboot the computer and phone after the full driver installation?
Yes I restarted both several times while installing/uninstalling
Drivers... I have just accepted that I need to remove the card to sideload content.
On a side note, I am now afraid to root my phone and change the roms because I'm on boostmobile and will be unable to connect phone to a computer to fix if something goes wrong.

after you install drivers, reboot, then plug in your phone w debugging on, it should install a bunch of drivers, then take forever on modem, unplug and replug the usb from the phone really fast, this should trip it up into moving to the next device... there should be at least two or three more. If you have GB loaded for some reason the RNDIS drivers are wonky. Make sure you use a USB port on your motherboard, not on a PCI, not on a front port... the drivers are acting weird lately, like they changed em up a bit... idunno... but once you get a setup, dont mess with it! Hope somethin helps... Its almost guaranteed the drivers, unless the Boost is the issue, idunno...
ive had that same problem ever sense ive got the phone, what if you havent given up there is another way for you to connect to your computer. It is very simple and fast it is how i connect now and it works every time.
1. Have computer on and Phone off
2. Boot your phone into ClockworkMod 3.1.0.1 (Power/camera/volume down)(it must be this version of clockwork)
3. Go to mounts and storage
4. On the bottom of the menu you must click mount usb storage.
5. Plug your phone into the computer and your computer should recognize your phone now.
Also if your on Vista / Win7 you should run the command line (cmd) or the bat file to root with admin rights: Right click cmd or the run.bat and select run as administrator and that hould help.

[Q] USB Storage doesn't show up in windows 7

I have not had this problem until recently and not sure what has caused it. My phone is not showing up when I mount my SD card. Also undetected by ADB. I have tried multiple cables, different computers, and also reformatted my computer and installed fresh drivers just in case. My phone does however show up in Odin and I can flash a modem no problem. I was thinking about wiping my phone back to stock and going from there, but I am afraid that will not fix it and I will be stuck at stock. =(
Thanks,
Jaculop
Had the same problem. Had to reload the drivers even though my other Epic was recognized just fine.

Same here, its' like it woked one day and didn't the next. I had 2 problems, one was the fact that only half of the usb jacks on the front of my desktop work (dumbass), and I had to re-install the drivers found on Samsung.com. My computer also will not recognize the sd card until you turn on mass storage from the drop down menu on the phone after the usb is connected.
What I did was turn on USB debugging, connected the phone in the drop down menu, then went int control panel>device manager> and looked for either "Other" or something in the USB connections. I found Samsung Android. I clicked that and hit update drivers from Windows Update. It took like 30 minutes to load all the necessary drivers then connected fine after that.
I have tried uninstalling/reinstalling drivers. I am pretty sure I have tried the update driver thing through device manager, with it saying I already had an update to do driver. I have also tried with/without debugging and also manually selecting use as a mass storage device. Just kinda weird it shows up in device manager, just ADB doesn't recognize it or as a mass storage device. I am starting to think it is something more with my phone as it doesn't show up on other computer and tried other cables. May just say screw it and try Odin.

You can uninstall the drivers, then let Windows Update find the drivers again. It needs 5 drivers altogether. My problem was similiar. It wouldn't recognize my phone with USB debugging on, yet had no problem recognizing my other Epic so was sure my phone was screwed up. After Odin it did recognize it but wouldn't after rooting and putting on a GB leak ROM but again the other phone was fine. Forced driver update and has worked fine ever since. Although one phone shows up as F and the other as E. Not worried as long as it works...lol.
I uninstalled the Galaxy S 64bit drivers but the uninstall option that came with the package. I plugged in my phone, it attempted to find drivers and said unsuccessful. I click, search automatically and it comes back with nothing.
Also it says it is Samsung CDMA Technologies.
Edit: I just tried manually updating the drivers by pointing to the driver location instead of using the provided installation. I see only 4 drivers installed. Samsung USB Composite Device, Samsung Mobile Modem Diagnostics, and one other I am unable to find the name of.
There is also a CDC driver.

I fixed the problem. In case anyone else runs into it, it's simple to fix. I was afraid to ODIN back to stock in case something was wrong and unable to root/cwm again, but I grew some balls did it and it's now working flawlessly. Must have been something messed up with the system files on my epic, that even a wipe and reflash from CWM would not fix.

Yea, I rerooted and flashed my rom. Everything is working fine so far, along with my SD card and phone showing up on my computer. Before it was just showing up as Samsung CDMA Tech. now it is showing actually showing the samsung model number. So something happened with the phone before. Not exactly sure.

Tried using the USB utilities under settings --> wireless and network
Still no luck

since you install the drivers into multiple computers and tested them all... it might be your phone.
First can you give more detail on what happens when you plug your phone in? Does your computer make any sounds or searches anything?
ALSO Try installing kies.
if that doesn't work either... looks like you need a warranty exchange
Try using an oem Samsung usb to micro usb cable. I had this problem with my Samsung Galaxy Epic a while back. Everytime I used a generic cable lying around my computer would not recognize my phone. When I used a Samsung cable it worked. Your computer should automatically identify your phone using the right cable. If not re-install them and don't forget to restart your computer before attempting to connect to your computer again. Good luck.
I've had this problem too.
Initially I had kies installed and had to launch the program to access the two 'mounted' removable drives.
I assume the drives mount, but you can't access the drives?
If that's the case, look on the phone and pull down the status bar and check to see if it sees the USB connection. Select that, and allow it to connect as USB storage.
thanks guys for all the quick response.
The problem seem to fix itself. After removing and attaching the USB cable a number of times, the PC suddenly recognized the phone.
I don't know what fixed it.
Now, I can proceed to root my phone!

you probably didn't give it enough time for the pc to actually install the needed components.. it takes a good 5-10 mins for everything to finish installing
I'm faced with the same problem. Only different is, as soon as it shows connect to usb from the notification bar if goes away. I tried the usb tool in wireless but still wont work. I tried the samsung cable as well
know it sounds dumb, but have you rebooted lately? mine wouldnt recognize the sd card when plugged into comp....rebooted....all is well

[Q] stupid question...how do I transfer files to/from my phone?!

hey guys.
just got a SGS3 for the wife and one for myself, coming from a long time with HTC Evos.
i'm having an embarassing situation...I don't see how to transfer files from or to the phone. I plug it in via usb, drivers installed automatically, computer told me the device was ready to be used...and nothing else. nothing popped up on the phone, nothing on my computer. the phones came with no software and Samsung's website does not list any drivers or software to download...
the phones are stock for now until I get a chance to root them this week or next weekend. in the meantime, what is the way a normal user is supposed to transfer files to/from this phone?!
I'm on Windows 7 on both the laptop and the PC, both have the same situation. with both phones...both fully stock but also updated with the latest software.
thanks for the help!

Weird...
it should pop up as a media device.
Plug it in and pull down the notification bar and touch where it says "touch for other USB options"
and make sure Media Device (MTP) is checked.
if it doesn pop up then either the drivers arent installed, or their not installed correctly.
or the cable is bad, or the USB port is bad.
or the devil is messing with you

make sure you have automatic updating on in windows, at least for the drivers. this is why i hate MTP, its such a pain in the ass. i sure hope someone gets mass storage mode goin in these soon. Make sure theres no unknown devices listed in the devices manager. then grab and install the drivers from here(although you shouldnt need them for mtp to work) http://www.samsung.com/us/support/owners/product/SPH-L710MBBSPR#
downloading now...when I plug it in, the cell phone makes a little noise. but no prompts come up under my notifications.
on the PC I found it the phone shows up under Devices & Printers, but there is no way to interact with it other than to see it's drivers and that they all apparently are up to date and functioning correctly...

This is crazy. I curse Samsung for this mtp ****t I swear. Under portable devices. Device name should be SPH-L710--thats what ur looking for. Will probly also be listed under modems as Samsung mobile usb modem. And in the usb devices as Samsung mobile usb composite device.another thought If you didn't already, turn on usb debugging and let it install those drivers as well. Has helped me in the past. Maybe even switchin it to download mode just so windows can see it in all modes and maybe wake the hell up.
i had usb debugging on originally, turned it off. no difference.
I went and bought a new memory card reader that supports SDXC cards, so now I can at least remove my memory card and transfer files...but still doesn't help me. I want to use that extra internal space I didn't have on my Evo 3D to add more music still to my phone...so I need to connect it to the PC somehow!

it blows my mind that its not working. what version of win 7 do you have? x86 or x64?
we have a laptop and a desktop, both running Windows 7 x64. we also have two of those Galaxy S3 phones. I'm running Go Launcher, my wife using the stock Wiz launcher. I have tried in different USB ports in both laptop and desktop, using different usb cables, and with both phones. with and without adb debugging enabled. same situation.
the phone shows up as a modem under device manager. under SAMSUNG Android Phone there is only SAMSUNG Android ADB Interface listed, nothing specific to this phone. I have tried changing the drivers around to different built-in samsung drivers and drivers from when I had the Galaxy Tab, nothing. I downloaded the latest drivers as they were linked above, nothing.
there are no pop-ups on either phone and nothing on the computer beyond the noise of something being plugged in...
w.t.f.
OK. Don't think its the issue but have run into this before with a Samsung phone or two. Reboot the computer and hold down f8 as its booting. When the advance menu comes up, hit *disable driver signature enforcement*. Like I said I don't think that's it but that has caused problems for me before (thanks microsoft) on x64 bit windows and a Samsung android phone so might as well rule it out.
O yeah, and just to make sure, you dont have kies installed right?
I do have Kies installed. someone now suggested I try using it to connect my phone. I open Kies, connect my phone, it says Connecting...and never goes anywhere. I did the connection troubleshooting thing, it took a while, said it was complete, plugged the phone back in, same situation.
jeez this is really stupid.
i disabled the driver enforcement option. nothing.
I rooted the phone now. installed that easy UMS apk and set the phone to MTP mode. now I have a Samsung MTP device on my device manager but none of the drivers work with it. windows couldn't find a driver, and i've tried 6 drivers manually and they all say they can't start the device.
anything else I can do now that i'm rooted?

kies is the devil
its actually the opposite. You DO NOT want it installed. Uninstall kies completely. Idk how I forgot about mentioning kies.nothing but problems. Nix it and I bet this headache ends. And if u take that advice, have the phone unpluged during then removal . I would also recommend reinstalling the Samsung drivers I linked to yesterday. Then plug the phone in and I would bet smooth sail in from there
will try. now the phone shows up the "connected as media device" notice when I plug it in, and the PC sees it as an MTP device...but still not letting me use it. lets hope uninstalling KIES helps.

Sounds like progress. I think uninstling kies will do the trick
well I uninstalled Kies, told it to uninstall any and all drivers for mobile phones. cleaned my registry. restarted my computer, installed the drivers fresh, plugged in the phone and it seems to work. for the first time it shows as a mtp device!
thanks a million. let's hope it works to transfer files.

Windows won't recognize t989

Hello all!
First: I promise I searched the forums and google as hard as I could!
I'm running AOKP JB with CWM, although the problem was present on stock ICS from T-Mobile.
Symptoms: Computer and phone will refuse to acknowledge any connection (nothing shows up in Device Manager), except the phone will still charge. If I do the "remove the battery with USB plugged in" trick, the first time I do it, it will recognize an unknown device, but kies and adb won't recognize it. If I unplug it and plug it back in, it'll go back to not acknowledging any connection.
I previously programmed it (when I was still running stock ROM) via ADB via WiFi, but I need to be able to use ADB via USB. Besides, I can't seem to get ADB over WiFi anymore.
When I plug it into a different computer (Win7), it will, however, recognize my phone.
Earlier this year, before I ever tried programming via WiFi, it connected to my Win8 machine with no problem. I don't think it's a problem with the wifi setup though because the ROM was reinstalled and of course I've restarted ADB in USB mode in the months since...
What I've tried:
Reinstalling Kies
Reinstalling Samsung USB drivers
[^]Restarting the ADB server
Updating ADB
Trying different USB cables
Trying different USB ports
Toggling USB debugging
Toggling MTP mode
The UART thing from the dialer
Restarting the phone and the computer (of course)
Checking to see if my computer's USB drivers need to be updated
The android terminal command "setprop persist.sys.usb.config mass_storage,adb"
Pulling and replacing the battery while connected via USB
Crying in a corner
If anyone can help me, it'd be greatly appreciated! I'm all out of ideas and Google is no longer helpful =/
try to uninstall the drivers that are present anything samsung related to your drivers ... then connect the phone and let the process do its thing if you have the samsung drivers saved on your PC and the drivers still aint working update the drivers and then manually click where the drivers are to install them and hopefully it will work and when you tried MTP is it the only option it gives you no storage or anything ??... and is usb debugging on when you are trying all this ??

I tried on my work computer that didn't have any samsung drivers and when the "unknown device" dialog popped up it didn't do anything or install anything, nor did it show up in Device Manager. Unplugging and replugging it back in did not reproduce the dialog box. Togged USB Debugging and still no dialog box saying it recognized it.
The thing with the samsung drivers is that they're self installing so even if it popped up in Device Manager, I wouldn't be able to manually update the drivers =/
I tried MTP both with and without USB Debugging, although it also gives the option for PTP.
At this point do you think I should unroot and go back to stock? It's not been recognized on three computers now! =[
Are you using the stock cable? My computer wouldn't recognize mine without it.

Both the stock cable and a generic cable.
Similar problem
Similar problem as the OP. And hi guys, it's nice to be on these forums.
My device, when I plug it in using the stock cable, doesn't even charge. It doesn't show up in device manager, nor does it give me a notification, or say it's unsupported and bear that yellow icon. I have tried using different USB ports, I have tried the toggling USB debugging, I have tried restarting phone, computer, and taking out battery. I have tried that PDA/MODEM dialer trick. I am using 4.1.2 Jellybean, not rooted. (that WAS my goal,, until I hit this roadblock) I have not connected it to the computer in the past, it's relatively new. I'm thinking the cable is bust.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. It charges fine through a wall outlet plug, be it generic or stock.
