New and interesting problems - Xperia Play Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So, I got an Xperia Play a few months ago on eBay, and everything was fine with it. But last month, my front camera started acting funny. It started showing the image in neon green, and then later stopped working in general. It would say "Couldn't access camera" or something like that. Then, a little later, my earpiece stopped working in calls. I would have to switch to speakerphone or plug in headphones to be able to hear anybody. Then, a little later, my backlight started acting funny. It would turn off sometimes, so I could see what was on screen, but not be able to interact with it. Putting it into sleep mode and back out would fix it. But soon, I had trouble pulling it out of sleep mode. I'd have to press the button like 50 times (not an exaggeration, toward the end) Then a little later, I had trouble turning the phone on at all. It would turn on, go the Sony Ericsson screen, sit for about 5 seconds, then the backlight would shut off, and it would stop doing anything. Now, 99 times out of a hundred, the phone won't boot, and if it does, I can't let it go to sleep, or I can't pull it out of sleep.
I couldn't think of any problem that could cause all of these problems. I tried reflashing the firmware, but that didn't fix the problem. Does anybody have any idea? Any help would be greatly appreciated...

When you get it to turn on use flashtool and flash a stock ftf file

I did flash stock firmware. It's still not working... I have a bad feeling it's a hardware problem.

Yeah sounds more like a hardware problem. Tho I might be wrong.

Those same things were happening to my old xperia play which i dropped in water...

Hm... Well, I dunno, if anybody has any other ideas, please let me know. I don't think I ever had a situation where I could have exposed the phone to water

Green tint on the camera means hardware problem. Had those problems with the old K810 Cybershot phones.

Well, anyone know specifically what KIND of hardware problem it would be? I might try to fix the phone if it's not too expensive.

I will probably send it to repair servoce of Sony, my phone is still in warranty (relock bloader )..

Hm... Well, I'm too poor to send the phone to Sony. I could probably buy a replacement part and do it myself, but that's only if I know what part I need. If not, I may just have to put this on the back burner for a while.

Did you unlock your phone by official method
Sent from my MT11i using xda app-developers app

The green tint on the FF cam for me usually gets fixed by a wiping the cam. >.<

I did not unlock my phone. I wanted to, but I wasn't able to

the front cam failure and failure of the earpiece were 2 of the faults that I had as a result of a defective flex cable which was repaired by vodafone under warranty. as it happens, the flex cable on my phone has failed again and has again been sent away for another flex cable replacement
hope this helps

sony arc screen went blank!

hi i have a sony arc
last night out of no where my screen went blank.
at first it wouldnt come out of sleep mode screen wise stayed black.
phone was still functioning i could feel the vibration on the screen lock.
turned the phone off and on and everything was fine.
then the next day again it happened and now its completely blank.
i can see the screen is clearly on.
i tired wiping the phone with flashtool thinking its a software issue and still nothing.
tied the new software update with pc companion and same again.
at no point was it water damaged, this literally happened out of the blue.
anyone now what may be wrong?
thanks
Nothing at all dont show up?
Remove battery and plug charger?
Usb?
If nothing....seems hardware problem.

thanks for the reply
connecting via usb is fine as normal. literally the phone seems to work just the screen stays in that dim light you see before the sony logo comes on on boot up.
its looking like hardware failure .
ill have to go in get it checked, if it is that ill bin it as i no longer have the receipt or insurance .
its to big a risk to take for an expensive phone to buy this model again.
tut.
Sound like somekind problem with display backlights....
But how about buttons light?

i dropped it into a place they said it doesnt look like its the screen on close inspection , some issue underneath it as you said maybe the backlight, but if it is the screen then its not going to be cheap they said
Why would u need a receipt, se offer a 2 year warranty and the phone hasn't been out 2 years

so i could go into a sony shop and ask for it to be fixed for free?
Go to service center and take your warranty, it will be free unless if you have unlocked bootloader.

[Q] Screen problems

My screen randomly freezes, with Android still running in the background. It also has multicolored "snow" static-like crap on the screen instead of an image half of the time, especially when unlocking the screen. Happens when the kernel hasn't even finished booting as well. I also get visual artifacts appearing on screen, which would be expected if my GPU was OC'd, but it's not. Tried stock, didn't help, so I know it's a hardware problem.
I suspect it might be the slider ribbon, or the screen itself, but I want to know what it most likely is before trying to order parts and spending the money. If it's being caused by the GPU, I'm just gonna pick up a new part-time job and buy a new phone altogether..
Any ideas?
Same problem, same suspicions. I'm taking mine apart and will advise.
Got it back together... no change. Might just be the GPU.
Sometimes while the screen is glitching, moving the slider gets it to work. I'm thinking the ribbon cable in the slider might be damaged on the inside.
I'm gonna try replacing it since the part is $11 on Ebay.

It's not the kernel. I've tried every gsm kernel available, wiped the boot partition with fastboot, wiped everything, installed stock. Doesn't make any difference. 100% a hardware problem.

I'm wondering if the actual flex cable itself. Since I just derped and sat on my phone and broke the digitizer, I'm just gonna get the whole screen assembly (Since it's only about 5$ cheaper). It could be a while though. I can't order it till next tuesday.
I used to have similar problems on my g2 until I replaced the flex cable. But then again, the image seems to freeze and occasionally glitch, so I'm wondering if there's a faulty solder connection somewhere since shaking/beating/banging on the phone seems to also fix it sometimes.
I managed to dig up four old threads where multiple people had the exact same problems as me, replaced the flex cable, then had zero issues afterwards.
I was just reading them an hour ago. 100% sure the cable is the problem for my phone.
Now it's just a waiting game, first waiting until I have some cash, then waiting for the e-cheque to clear, then the shipment.. I'm gonna have to wait at least a month unless somebody goes and ships one to my door instantly.. Which obviously ain't gonna happen as I'm not a developer and just someone who helps ppl with their phones.
I'm gonna save up and buy a new phone, then give this one to my 11 year old niece after it's repaired. By the time I have enough cash for one of those new HTC models, the cable should be here.

Well if you do it before me, please let me know!! And I'll be sure to report back! I'll order the screen assembly next tuesday.

Sorry to resurrect this...
Sorry to resurrect this out of the blue, but I am also having a similar problem.
I have not rooted my R800at, but noticed first that the screen would sometimes stretch or skew into an absurdly distorted shape, only to snap back to normal after unlocking the screen.
Then, a few days ago, I also started to get this colorized snow pattern on my screen. I was wondering if you managed to fix your phone by ordering the cable? Also, not to sound too much like a pathetic n00b, is there a .doc somewhere (Or PDF) showing how to disassemble the phone to replace the cable, if that indeed fixed the problem?
I am going to see if AT&T will warranty the phone (Less than a year old, more than 30 days, not more than 90) but I am unsure if it is going to cost me an arm and a leg to do so.

The phone comes with a one-year manufacturer warranty. Since you aren't rooted or unlocked, send it in for repair. If you open up the phone to fix the cable yourself you'll end voiding the warranty permanently. If something else breaks later down the road that's harder to fix, you're gonna need it.

hey everyone well after reach tru this thread i think my flex cable is the problem as well
a while back when i unlock the fone the screen just use to be all jumpy (but i dont think dat was related to the flec cable problem cuz after changing wallpaper it stopped)
but like ah few weeks after i changed my rom, if i didn't slide out my gampad my phone wouldn't unlock, sometimes when i turn it off(the phone vibrates as usual but the screen nevr comes on) and then now like its completely gone i'm getting nothing from the screen anymore
so i'm guessing its the flex cable
and i think thats the reason for my front camera to stop wrking as well
FIX!

That's correct. You all guys need to replace the ribbon cable/flex cable and the issue will be gone.

Particular region of the screen doesn't respond to touch at all.

Hello,
2 weeks before I got water in my phone (xperia S), but now it's dried up. Everything's working properly but I'm facing a certain problem. A particular region/area of he screen doesn't respond to touch at all. Though there's no deformation in the display. Could you please help me out. I've tried a hard reset, rebooting, drying it up with a dryer, reinstalling the os and all. But still no good. I face many problems while choosing options like can't delete any messages. Even going to the landscape mode doesn't help. Please do help. :/
hmmmm
water damage, you may have to replace the screen
the part that got wet shorted out and now doesn't work

I tried rebooting several times. But no good. If the LCD's damaged then won't the display should also has been dispersed?
try to clean screen with alcohol or something for glass.
This sometimes occure when screen is dirty on some places, good clean may also fix that.
Im telling this from my experience.
If nothing helps, try to get it on warranty if you still have it.

Never use drier on a wet phone as it might damage internal circuits. Water damage is something that is totally unpredictable. that part of screen might start working in a few days or a few hours or not at all ever. I'd suggest wait it out for a few days. If the problem doesn't get auto corrected, then you will have to take it for repairs(A water damaged phone's days are numbered though,no matter what you do)
Does the ok/cancel button show problem only? If you scroll wallpaper through that region, does it work?

Yes, that's the only problem. And, no it doesn't works if I tap on the region, it recognizes the tap on either above/ below area and acts accordingly.

What parts are broken in my Xplay? (Gonna repair)

My old friend has given up on me and is laying on the shelf in coma. I need your help to revive him back to life.
So I've had my xplay for about 2 years now and it worked well into the end. First the touchscreen stopped working (I could get it working sometimes by swyping the gamepad down and up but in the end it completely stopped working). I tried many different roms and etc no luck it was a hardware problem. I used the gamepad to use the phone until the screen stopped working. Sometimes a reboot could make it work again but it eventually got worse and it was dead. I can still feel the vibrations when it starts and also when it wants me to choose if I want go to recovery.
I've taken apart the phone to see if a cable was loose but there was none so I put the phone back together to see if it would be working after i cleaned and checked the flex cables. Sadly nope.
I must say that I'm not a handyman but taking this phone apart was super easy and I never thought I would be able to put it back together but that was also easy.
So here is my question. What parts do I need to replace to get the screen running again?
I appreciate all help I can get and sorry for the WALL OF TEXT. Cheers!

99.99% it's slider flex cable. Replacing it should not be hard, since you now how to open your Play.
Touchscreen, front buttons, light sensor, proximity sensor and front camera are all connected to motherboard with that one flex cable.
Video guide might be helpfull too:

If/when you get the flex cable installed and it solves the issue, please report back here if it solved your issue so others who mau have a similar or same issue can get an idea if this fixes it.
Yes, I'll report back as soon as I get the cable and I got it running again.

power button

Hi im having some trouble on my sgh i747. for a while the power button hasd been acting kind of glitchy, meaning that when i pressed it, it would turn on and off a few times, and all of a sudden it turned off and wont trun back on. It is acting as though someone is holding down the button constantly. should i replace just the button, or should i change the enitire motherboard. Or is there a way i can fix this without spending money. and if it comes to me having to change the motherboard, could you please advise me on a good website for geniuine parts. Thanks.
Had the same issue.. Bought new switches from eBay.. Searched YouTube for the how.. And while waiting opened it up and destroyed the power button. Booted using recovery, then downloaded screen off app. It's a work around until the new switch arrives

This is going to sound strange however it worked for me. I bought a G3 on eBay at a really good price to be used to play with flashing ROMS. The phone supposedly was acting as you describe. It was also supposed to have some slight water damage. When I received it, it seemed to be working ok. However I soon started experiencing the same symptoms as you. I did some Google searching and found a YouTube video with a solution that strangely enough happened to work for me. The solution was to rap the power button against the edge of a table or chair a few times. Did that and now the power button works. It has been working now for about four months. I now have a backup phone for a $115 investment.
