power button - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

Hi im having some trouble on my sgh i747. for a while the power button hasd been acting kind of glitchy, meaning that when i pressed it, it would turn on and off a few times, and all of a sudden it turned off and wont trun back on. It is acting as though someone is holding down the button constantly. should i replace just the button, or should i change the enitire motherboard. Or is there a way i can fix this without spending money. and if it comes to me having to change the motherboard, could you please advise me on a good website for geniuine parts. Thanks.

Had the same issue.. Bought new switches from eBay.. Searched YouTube for the how.. And while waiting opened it up and destroyed the power button. Booted using recovery, then downloaded screen off app. It's a work around until the new switch arrives

So do you think changing the power button in my case, would resolve my issue?

From my research.. Yes.. It seems to be a common problem

This is going to sound strange however it worked for me. I bought a G3 on eBay at a really good price to be used to play with flashing ROMS. The phone supposedly was acting as you describe. It was also supposed to have some slight water damage. When I received it, it seemed to be working ok. However I soon started experiencing the same symptoms as you. I did some Google searching and found a YouTube video with a solution that strangely enough happened to work for me. The solution was to rap the power button against the edge of a table or chair a few times. Did that and now the power button works. It has been working now for about four months. I now have a backup phone for a $115 investment.

Screen randomly doesn't respond

Hi fellow PLAY owners, I'm having trouble with my screen. I can turn my phone off no problem, but when it comes to waking it up, either by pressing the power button or the home button, my screen won't turn on. I can slide it open, and i hear stuff going on as if my screen were on, but I can't see anything. It'll be like that for random amounts of time, like 1 minute, or as long as 5 minutes or more. Any ideas? THANks

the digitizer lets the software know where you pressed on the screen, the ribbon connects the screen and digitizer to the main board of phone
So which one would it be if even pressing the power button, which is a harware button, doesn't respond?
Can anyone help me by giving me the part number I should order? I'm checking eBay but there's at least two options for the same named part... Thanks guys!

mine has the same problem but i think there's only a dead spot. For example, the numpad place for 4, 5 and 6. Is there any way to solve this other than taking it to a technician? Problem appears at random times also. Thanks in advance!

I think this is a different issue. My entire screen won't turn on even though the phone itself is on.
By the way, my problem has gotten worse. Now it will only turn on (by chance) after I have slid out the gamepad. Grr..

As far as I know there is no under or overclocking going on. Not unless my ROM does it without me knowing it (Gin2Ics).
Anybody know the name for the flex cable part? Or the part number? Thanks/:cyclops:
So I bought this screen digitizer thinking that it was the problem... and it took forever to get delivered! anyways, I replaced the digitizer and am having the same problem.... :/ and after I changed the digitizer I noticed that the flex cable is actually ripped!! so now I purchased it from here and I'll keep u updated.
Hey thanks so much man. Hope it gets fixed. I want to know how it works for you so maybe I might do the same. It finally died out on me and screen won't turn on at all...
That's exactly what happened to me!

That's cool man. Congratulations. I, unfortunately, didn't have the same luck. My phone is out for the count. I now have the sad news of no longer being an Xperia PLAY owner. Sad face.
I'll leave this question opened though, for others who might profit from it! :highfive:

unlock/power button

hi guys just recently my one x started playing me up. when i press power button to unlock it dont always unlock the screen, sometimes takes few presses, anybody else found this issue?
ive done a reset on phone to
Yes, I believe it responds differently depending on which side you press it from. If your finger is coming from the back of the phone and is not sufficiently strong, it sometimes does not register a press (my guss is because it is sloped). But whenever I do a direct strong press, it always responds.

It's possible that the drop could of broke it as you could of cracked the housing for the button slightly and continued use of the button over time the crack got bigger and pushed the button further in the phone, by dropping it you may of reduced the fair wear and tear of the phone.

weird tho it only happens if the phones been left alone for a while, if i lock then unlock straight away its fine its when i leave it theres a issue
Mine sometimes does that too. But not consistent though. I assume it's because I'm on a fresh Jelly Bean. Hopefully the latest build would fix this.
I did thought it might have something to do with the button being in an angle also.

just thought i would mention that i became concerned about basic wear and tear on my power button eventually destroying it, so i tried an app called ultimate on off in the play store. it actually works pretty well, but of course if you want to do a reset or take a screenshot, you do have to use the power button. otherwise, i don't touch that button any more.
after posting about the screen unlock issue. my one x developed massive screen flicker issues screen was hoping all over the place and it was almost like it looked dissovled in places. its gone back to repair,. just hop htc dnt c the little mark and refuse me, although the vodafone paperwork says in perfect condition!!!
Hey dan, it sounds exactly like the problem I've had with my HOX. At first the unlock button did not always respond and then the UI started acting up, flying all over the screen and distort and stuff and finally it just didnt turn on at all anymore.
They HTC lady I contacted said it was hardware related and I highly doubt it has anything to do with you dropping the phone once.

I had this problem with a custom kernel. The phone entered something called deep sleep if i recall correctly. This made me press the power button multiple times before it would wake, but only if the phone hadn't been used for a while.

It sometimes happen to me when you try to unlock my phone right after you lock it (pressing the lock button to lock the screen then pressing the lock button to unlock). I don't know if its the same issue that you are having though.
My power button is extremely weak. almost no travel at all.. unfortunately my friends HOX is decent movement so i guess mine is just spanked
Did you meant Awesome On Off? I just tried it and so far so good. Its not perfect but it works for now. I guess its pretty cool how the phone automatically turns on when you tilt it at a certain angel.

when it happened to me, to ensure it wasn't the power/lock button, I installed a kernel with sweep to wake, and when I tried sweeping to wake, the problem repeated itself.
maybe you guys could try that to differentiate between a problem in the display or the actual button. That is...if you're rooted.
Otherwise, you might as well take it to the repair
so apparently vodafone have "exchanged" my phone whether that means new or refurb time will tell!!

Button Problems and First Root Ever

Hi, Everyone! This is my first post on here but I have spent the better part of the last week reading all the different threads. Yesterday my Samsung Epic 4G decided to go a little insane on me. It was working eprfectly fine (especially for a 2 year old phone) when all of a sudden my power button seemed to start cyling and the power off screen kept popping up and the volume keys did the same. I turned the phone off and even tried taking the battery out and giving it a rest but the problem persisted.
Another issue was that some of the numbers no longer worked correctly. The even numbers both on the touch screen and keypad would dial
"2468" instead of the corresponding number; very weird! The phone had never been rooted or modded at all. Well I was able to get into the phone after figuring out a way to input my passcode with the faulty numbers and I performed a hard reset. The phone is back to completely stock but the power button and camera button do nothing. The volume up button works well but the volume down (besides lowring the volume) button causes google search to pop up and then a bunch of letters and numbers to be typed in both the google search bar and in the message of box of the last person I texted. I can still use the phone by opening the key pad to wake the screen up and I can text and call fine as long as I don't touch the Volume Down button. Also, battery life is ridicolously low. I am up for upgrade but don;t really feel like upgrading to the S3 just yet. Sorry for the long post. I know it is against forum policy but I wanted to get the whole story out there. So here is what I am looking to do:
I want to root the phone and install one of the roms to maybe eek out a couple more weeks out of it. Again it works ok now, just the sliding out of the keypad and lack of power button sucks. The phone boots up if I take the battery out and put it back in wihtout touching the power button.
I have read up on Odin and that looks somewhat straightforward. Just trying to see what you think is my best course of action. Again, I do not have a power button working or camera button and a faulty Volume Down Button. Maybe I can do the whole slip in the battery while holding "1" to get it into download mode? This will be my first time rooting a phone so any help is great and appreciated. Thanks and again, sorry for the really long post!
I forgot to mention that the phone is currently running on Gingerbread 2.3.6. This may or may not make it more difficult to root.

was thinking this as well
It actually got wet about 1.5 years. I threw it in rice for about a week and never had any issues. The phone has never frozen or had issues the past year and a half. Yesterday it was in the kitchen charging (with a samsung charger but not one for this phone specifically) and it started doing the whole power button/power off screen flashing. I was able to get it in download mode earlier today but i don't know about recovery mode since the power button is dead. Maybe I should root it to see if its a hardware issue?
Edit: I forgot to mention that the phone gets really really hot while charging as well in the area above the battery. Hopefully nothing short-circuited.
It could take a while before the corrosin gets bad enough to affect your phone. I dropped a phone in the toilet once, and it was over 2 years before it crapped out. Took it apart and it looked like an old Chevy wheel well inside.

That is a good point. I never thought of that. It was also in the kitchen which was humid and hot as ever yesterday. Do you think any kind of root or rom could help me squeeze a little bit of life out of my old phone.

So I left the phone alone for a couple days with the battery out. I go to turn it on today and it worked perfectly. Then after about 5 minutes the power button stopped working again, but everything else is ok. No random letters and numbers and the volume buttons work as well. Now, I'm kind of lost as to what to do. I do have a parts phone, same one as this. Maybe I need to replace the power button? It clicks and everything and even worked for a couple minutes but now is non-functional again.

Soft-Bricked? Maybe?

Hi all,
I'm having trouble with my Telus Samsung Galaxy S2x. I was coming home from work on Wednesday and was listening to music at the time. I turned on my phone, went to text messages, the phone makes a really harsh and nasty noise (the music cutting out) and the phone shuts off. I instantly took out the battery and turned the phone back on again. It got to the boot screen and then rebooted itself and started to vibrate in 2 second intervals on a black screen.
I did some research and it seems like it could be a power button issue? The phone thinks you're turning it off and on again in an infinite loop. At first, I thought it was a battery problem (it still can be without testing a new battery) but I took out the battery and tried turning it on with just the power from the wall, and the same thing happened again. I have however, been able to get into Recovery/Download mode for about 2-3 seconds before it reboots and vibrates. There has also been times where I got as far as into the OS on the lock screen before it rebooted. For the most part it's usually gives up on the boot screen. I should probably note that I'm not a Telus customer, I bought the phone through a friend that worked there and used it on Wind.
My phone is rooted and I have Slimbean 3.0 installed on it - if that helps at all. I was wondering if anyone else had the same problem as I do and what they did to fix it. I'm not too too concerned about the phone (in terms of getting it refurbished). It's the data on the phone that I need to recover if getting it refurbished is my last option. That being said, I am running out of options and any help is greatly appreciated!
Thanks guys!
It is indeed a sticky power button issue. You can get it replaced or u can try to unstick it urself. Don't know where or how much. Try a needle to clean around the outside of the button. Try to rub alcohol to dissolve residue. Try to leave the phone off and water protected while in the freezer for 20-30 minutes and hope for shrinkage that'll loosen the power button. Weird but I heard it worked for someone.

Bricked, turning off after 5 seconds, WTF?

Hello folks!
My girlfriend's phone is maybe bricked, I'm not sure, and I don't think we can use the word bricked, because it just happened whitout flashing or attempting anything, she was just charging it and it shut off.
The device vibrates and boots when you put in the battery, but it just keep going for like 5 seconds after the vibration,
I mean, you put in the battery ...(Vibration)... 1.... (Samsung logo)...2...3...(S3 logo)....4....5....(black screen forever!)
It just does that, no bootloop, no nothing.
And I can't try to turn it on again until I remove and reinstall the battery.
Even if I try to get it in download mode or recovery, It just turn off after 5 seconds!
I tried different batteries also.
Have anoyone experienced something similar?
Could be sds, sudden death syndrome. It's well documented all over. The power button fails and it's considered a manufacturer defect. Take it to sprint and they should replace it for free.

Yeah! It must be that, I just started trying with my S3 keeping the power button pushed and it does the same thing.
I'm not on Sprint anymore, I'm not even in USA.
Is there any way to fix it?
Cleaning it maybe?
Replacing the switch? (I'm watching some switches being sold on ebay)
I also work on a factory where we work with SMT electronic devices so there's a lot of equipment for repairing it.
Compressed air might fix it, and I believe you can replace it with a little patience.

That's what I was thinking, tonight I'm going to use some alcohol and compressed air and see if that works.
And if that doesn't work, I'm buying the replacement and there's a lot of people here who are specialized in SMT and who can help me.
Thank you dude, I'm maybe reporting tomorrow

No, cleaning it with alcohol and compressed air didn't worked, I changed the power switch and it worked pretty well... for like a day or two and then It keep happening the same.
Right now a friend of mine who works on a cellphone refurbishing factory is working on it, I hope he can fix it.
What's happening to your S3 exactly?
This happened to me a few months ago and it turns out my power button was stuck. So what I did is I held the phone perpendicular to a table (power button side) a few inches above the table and with moderate force, slammed the phone on the table and after a few tries, it turned on as usual. Just be gentle with it. I hope this helped.

I actually tried that, and it works, but It's just like a temporal fix, if you keep using the power button it's gonna happen again eventualy.
