I'm into about week 2 of my first EVO and I love the phone. Yesterday, however, I started to have strange screen issues. I'll try my best to explain:
In some browser pages, forums, and even my home screens the screen will act as though I am rapidly moving it up and down. It is impossible to stop it because it freezes up all the buttons. I figured I had a bad app so I went drastic and hard rebooted my phone. (Which is stock 2.2) Initially it seemed better but it started happening again, even while writing this post...I did not install any apps so I can only guess my screen is bad?

I'm having similar problems - see my post about screen gremlins. I'll be watching this to see if anyone has any ideas.
Ok, it happened again for about 2 minutes this time. I studied what it was doing and it seems it is trying to zoom in then out very rapidly. Occasionally jumping to different spots on the screen. Any help?

Some of the older Evos had trouble with their screens not being properly grounded, could be that's what yours has. You may want to search for some of the older threads on it to see if that's what it is.
Hmm, I'll look into it. Thanks! Any other ideas or suggestions are welcome as well.

Well, that isn't the issue. Read some posts, watched a few videos detailing said issue, tried the tests and downloaded the Multitouch Visualization App just to be 100% positive. Passed all tests.
I have Hardware Revision 0003. Everything else runs flawlessly with the exception of this weird screen issue. Now it seems like it is trying to push "buttons" on its own, pull down the shade, etc.
Kind of frustrated now. It's just so random.

Yeah definitely take it back, that's just our phone's Chinese heritage showing through.
So I ended up returning it. They took it back no questions asked and handed me a brand new Evo. Works 100% better.

i contacted htc a few weeks ago because of this issue. sprint changed their tep policies after i sat waiting for them on the phone for an hour, i found out, if you drop it just one time, it causess the lcd and digitizer to act as if the ribbon cable is lose.....only absolute fix is to have it repaired or exchanged.
Roargh! So much frustration getting used to this in the dark.

Settings > Display > Touch key light duration > Always on. This will have the buttons lit as long as the screen is awake. It doesn't really affect my battery, and it helps me a lot since I'm coming from Evo 4G , and E3D.
i wish there was a way of replacing the menu and search keys
I've been having the same issue, its gonna take some getting used to thats for sure.
luckily i also have the droid charge with it's rearranged buttons, so going from evo4g to the et4g isn't much of a problem for me.
i prefer having back lights always off. in the dark, the physical buttons on the charge are a plus.
Holy ****.. My bad.. I just created a thread over exactly the same problem.
I "didn't read first ".
I thought it was just me.
Anyway, I'll ask that it get pulled..
And BTW,
yes.. It's definitely driving me crazy too. I'm going in with a Torx screwdriver in 5, 4, 3,......

Drives me nuts as well! I also wish the button backlight was controlled by the ambient light sensor like the Evo.
HTC flipped their buttons from other phones. I had a nexus, matrix, mt4g and they all have the same layout as the galaxy.

Oh, well.
Then I'm f%cked.
I've ONLY owned HTC phones in the past.. and I can proudly say that I've spent a VERY unhealthy amount of time on those phones.
*This is hardwired into my head.
It would be unfair of me to even consider asking my brain to switch back, lol.
<<This space for rent>>
You'll get used to it. I had an Evo and a Galaxy Tab at the same time, and I kept hitting the wrong one at first, but I eventually became bilingual and hit the right button on either device without thinking about it. I think I've hit the wrong button on the ET a few times, but it hasn't been an issue so far.
I have to say, I like the HTC arrangement better since I use the menu button more than the home button and it's easier to get to with my thumb in the middle.
Too funny. Just got my E4GT yesterday then went to show my gf something on her Evo last night and I kept hitting the wrong button. I just thought I was retarded but I guess I'm already forming habits with the E4GT.

This is killing me. I am sure there is a way to do it once full root is achieved. No one wants to experiment with a non reversible method. I have had the phone since launch day and still cannot get use to it

It's hard to understand why this isn't standardized. Then again, it seems to be HTC that's different, and to me HMBS is more intuitive than MHBS.

I don't think it's just you..
HMBS just makes a lot more freaking sense.
The Home button should be "by itself", whether that's at the end of a row (like HTC does it), or set apart completely, like maybe this:
MBS
H
This ABSOLUTELY needed to be standardized by Google.
(I'm driving to Larry Page's house right now to punch him in the mouth.)

After my patiently waiting for the release of this awesome device I went to the Sprint store and got some hands on time...
When I got to the S-Note app and started writing the pen dropped out in the middle of the screen....
I went to two different stores and tried 3 different phones.... Was even threatened to have the fuzz called because I was trying to download a paint app to verify the issue
Anyone else notice this......
Sent from my PC36100 using xda app-developers app
Just tried mine and no problems. I'm able to make lines all the way up and down and across. I made giant loops and it didn't drop once.
Thats cool...
I was sitting here thinking there has to be something simple that is causing it to drop out and the only thing that i have come up with is the stores security device on the back...
magnets can cause it to drop out. also there is a setting under the tab thingy on the s pen. turning it one way makes it more sensitive and turning it another less.

I just got back from a Sprint store to research the same thing. I figured it was the security tag also because it was the same on both display models.
Couldnt get one because, of course, they didnt have any in stock.
When I go back ill show them the issue and see if they will remove the tag to see..
No one else has had a problem yet other then those displays....

I also went to the sprint store to try out the GN2 and was thinking the exact same thing. The S pen definitely stopped working in the middle of the screen. felt like i had to press pretty hard to get it to register and the dot did not seem to be accurate in terms of where the tip of the pen was.
I have no problems using mine. I use it for draw something. works great!
Is the rattle sound I hear near the camera housing on my S3 normal? Everything seems to be working fine. Just making sure and asking here since this is the only place where I can get real answers.
Thank you all,

That doesn't sound normal to me... there is no noticeable rattle on either of the Galaxy S III's I have access to. How long have you had the phone for?

I just double checked, my old Galaxy S II LTE (aka Skyrocket) has a noticeable rattle when you shake it but I'm not hearing it on the S III (perhaps it's more subdued?). A quick Google search however shows that several other people have experienced the same thing and the general consensus seems to be that it's nothing to worry over.

Hey guys so I'm having an issue with a phone, it used to happen once in a blue moon, but now it's happening all the time to the point the phone is almost unusable. It acts as if menu keys are being pressed, when I'm not even touching the phone! This video is a great example, someone has to have seen this. What's the fix?

There is a way to disable the menu key and use the search key as menu. It's somewhere in the general forums buried somewhere.

I used that fix for a while, but over time, the problem actually gets worse and the search key will start phantom pressing, too. If you're one of the unlucky E4GT owners who have this problem, eventually ALL the capacitive buttons start randomly phantom pressing. Just a heads up from experience.
I suggest running a custom ROM with a Navbar (softkeys) you can enable, and then disable all the hardware buttons.

No need for a custom ROM. I have a tutorial for any rooted TW JB build using multiple ways to get it done.

This is how I fixed my fantom menu button, maybe not a good idea but I was tired no to be able to use my phone, so far no problems at all, I opened my phone and placed a piece of magnet sticker on top of a connector that goes to the bottom of the phone, the the piece of magnet is from a business card that I had on the front of my refrigerator so I cut a little piece of it and put it on top of the connector with the plastic side to the connector to make sure not to touch anything, here are some pictures of what i did, if you want to do it (it is on you) , I am just giving my results so far 3 weeks with no problems.

How is this working out still? I was contemplating doing it with a piece of rf shielding but that would've short circuited everything:laugh: That is totally genius on your part!
I loaded a custom ROM on mines and went back to EL26 modem (check my latest post to see the logic behind it)

Can you confirm that this fix is still working?? There is a guy on Youtube that does a similar fix but he removes the motherboard and sandwiches in some aluminum foil where you have the magnet on this side. I like your fix a lot more since it is obviously a lot easier. Please let us know if this fix is still working. Thanks!

I cannot. I believe the symptoms manifests in low signal environments, with the mobile network running. Turn off mobile data to test.
Some swear by it, but I lack the knowledge to validate it, as I am not an electrical engineer.
Much of this comes down to your tolerance for pain. I just bought the Note 3 due to this exact issue. Others have returned their phones because of it. Some replacements end up with this same problem, or busted power buttons.
If you have the desire to keep your phone and the ability to try the fix, then back up everything on it, and execute the procedure; or find someone who can.
Other options are turning off mobile networks whenever possible, trying to get a replacement, or...
Get another phone. The used marketplace is teaming with good deals on S3s, use an upgrade, get a granny phone. You have choice.
I hope that some of this is helpful.
Good luck!

The only REAL fix that I was able to get is sending it back to Sammy and they replaced the PBA(motherboard). This is after sending it back to them two other times and they replaced the LCD screen and mini-jack. I just got it back and gave it to my wife when I got the S3, and immediately she said that in 3g areas it did the phantom menu. After calling and telling them two returns is unacceptable, they expedited the repair, fixed the RIGHT thing this time, and in over a month, there's been zero issues. Not sure if this is an option for anyone as you may be out of warranty, just passing on what finally worked for me. Good luck.
I have had this issue, non-stop, for the past year. It has gotten worse so I contacted samsung and sent my D710 to them to have it repaired.
They replaced the screen, sent it back but immediately (while trying to activate with Sprint) my phone began the phantom menu button. Not only the menu, but I also get phantom search & back key presses. I sent the phone back to samsung, again, and this time they replaced the PBA and still, i have the phantom issue. I called samsung but wont send the phone back a 3rd time. So I visit the sprint store after finding these threads, and the sprint tech replaces my screen again (free of charge) and before I even start my car to leave the parking lot... phantom key presses all over again.
I am convinced there is no fix for this, other than a hardware hack. I tried the magnet trick you guys speak of, but it did not change a single thing. I can trigger the phantom key press by simply sending (or receiving) a text message. It makes it near impossible to have a text-conversation with anybody.
My last resort is to sell the phone on ebay or craigslist to some unsuspecting fool, and replace it with a HTC or some other brand who actually understand RF interference and how stupid it would be to place the 3G antenna anywhere near such a sensitive chip.
