Settings > Display > Touch key light duration > Always on. This will have the buttons lit as long as the screen is awake. It doesn't really affect my battery, and it helps me a lot since I'm coming from Evo 4G , and E3D.

i wish there was a way of replacing the menu and search keys

I've been having the same issue, its gonna take some getting used to thats for sure.

luckily i also have the droid charge with it's rearranged buttons, so going from evo4g to the et4g isn't much of a problem for me.
i prefer having back lights always off. in the dark, the physical buttons on the charge are a plus.

Holy ****.. My bad.. I just created a thread over exactly the same problem.
I "didn't read first ".
I thought it was just me.
Anyway, I'll ask that it get pulled..
And BTW,
yes.. It's definitely driving me crazy too. I'm going in with a Torx screwdriver in 5, 4, 3,......

Drives me nuts as well! I also wish the button backlight was controlled by the ambient light sensor like the Evo.

HTC flipped their buttons from other phones. I had a nexus, matrix, mt4g and they all have the same layout as the galaxy.
Not HTC..

Oh, well.
Then I'm f%cked.
I've ONLY owned HTC phones in the past.. and I can proudly say that I've spent a VERY unhealthy amount of time on those phones.
*This is hardwired into my head.
It would be unfair of me to even consider asking my brain to switch back, lol.
<<This space for rent>>

You'll get used to it. I had an Evo and a Galaxy Tab at the same time, and I kept hitting the wrong one at first, but I eventually became bilingual and hit the right button on either device without thinking about it. I think I've hit the wrong button on the ET a few times, but it hasn't been an issue so far.
I have to say, I like the HTC arrangement better since I use the menu button more than the home button and it's easier to get to with my thumb in the middle.

Too funny. Just got my E4GT yesterday then went to show my gf something on her Evo last night and I kept hitting the wrong button. I just thought I was retarded but I guess I'm already forming habits with the E4GT.

This is killing me. I am sure there is a way to do it once full root is achieved. No one wants to experiment with a non reversible method. I have had the phone since launch day and still cannot get use to it

It's hard to understand why this isn't standardized. Then again, it seems to be HTC that's different, and to me HMBS is more intuitive than MHBS.

I don't think it's just you..
HMBS just makes a lot more freaking sense.
The Home button should be "by itself", whether that's at the end of a row (like HTC does it), or set apart completely, like maybe this:
MBS
H
This ABSOLUTELY needed to be standardized by Google.
(I'm driving to Larry Page's house right now to punch him in the mouth.)

When did you know...

...that you became hopelessly addicted to your smartphone? I realized mine when my Evo got stolen and I realized that not only was my very expensive and awesome phone gone, but now if I wanted to see any new emails, I had to open up my laptop and go to google periodically to check instead of having the Governator shout at me to "get in da choppa" every time a new email arrived.
but I'm not addicted I can stop any time.......
Yea, I can put my Evo down any time I want....and I could easily stop checking xda 100 times a day. No addiction here bro...

Not addicted, here cuz I want to be.
But not addicted.
for me it was the first 4am night modding my htc hero a year ago. little did i know on that first night, how many more similar nights would follow.
im not addicted, i just cant put my evo down...or stop refreshing xda pages...nm, im hooked.
edit: also, most of my bookmarks on my pc are xda pages. another sign
Yep, I had the all nighter session too! And the next day and the next.... I really knew it when I bricked my phone at work, stayed up late to fix it but couldn't, then had to be without the whole next day till I could sit down again and sort it out... So I flashed a new ROM!!! And it hasn't stopped, on my 5th Rom now in about 10 days....
I was actually late for work one day because I found a rom I really wanted to try and no freaking way was I gonna stop in the middle of a setup and no freaking way was I gonna go to work without my phone working right. I run the shipping dept at work and spend half the night all alone on my forklift on the other side of the plant than everyone else other than three guys work for me. We all been there awhile so other than tell them quick schedule for night they know what to do. I'd need rehab without my evo, power amp and bose earbuds. LOL I bet I check this place 3 times a night at least!
I would say I'm addicted I love trying out different builds for my evo. I just got it last Friday been loving it every since. Started off with a white hw 003 but didn't like the white anymore plus had this light leakage right below the captive buttons and the power button was sinking in so returned it for a black 004. day before yesterday but now my power button starting to sink in...is this normal, I don't even press on the power button hard fml

My daughter has gone through 2 Evos (2 broken screens) and those 2 had the sinking power button prob....
I knew I as a addict
1. when my friends told me I spend to much time with the phone
2. When I first got the phone back in November and flashed every available rom for the Evo..I mean every one!!! This over a course of 2 or 3 months.
3. When I copy my nandroid backups to my computer. All 12 gigs of it...on my laptop.
4. When I first put on anon recovery and could flash new rooms without adb. It felt like I was having a secret affair..
5. When I used to read xda over my ebooks..
6. When my girl told me to put the darn phone down and eat dinner with her.
7. When I would go in titanium backup and delete every damn bloatware I did not need or think I would give a 0.000000000001 percent better battery life...
Now I am a recovering flashaholic...satiesfied with cm7(because of wimax support) the modified wireless tether..list goes on...
I, too, have flashed about every ROM there is, and I've only had my EVO for 3 months.
I thought I had it beat when, just for the hell of it, I ran the RUU, and started all over again from scratch.
I thought I had it beat last month when I put Koni III on. I thought i was finally satisfied with a ROM I could live with every day. Then King had to go and release his 4th Sense ROM. And THEN, VaelPak had to come out with RC2. Now Koni's working on Elite 4, and since I'm a donor, I can't sleep at night, waiting for the beta to be released......
I got it bad, man. I got it REAL bad....
Hipkat,
You are not alone...I know the feeling...let me put some other items I knew when I was addicted....I forget theses when I wrote first article..
A. When somebody sees my phone and says it that a droid...not android but the darn locked Droid from moto.. I say hell NO...
B. When another user is on a puny smaller screen..different phone..hero..incredible...and such...then pull out my evo and pretend to read my text and see their eyes get wide...real wide...
C. When somebody at work use a tablet with 3G built in...then I simply pull out my nook color or iPad and tether it to my baby..
D. When a iPhone user brags about their phone...then I pull up my evo..hold their phone close to my hand side to side and say...nice screen on your phone...you must have great eyesight and small fingers.....
E. Last but not least...have every copy of a rom..from different version up grade...and worst of all...look at my nandroid backups and just the time stamp and try to remember what backup was that?....hehe...
When I first jailbroke my iphone 3 years ago. It introduced me to modding on a whole new level.

This is kind of a disspointment. I'm on my second evo also and my new one is almost leveled flat. I'm still within my 30 days so I might end up returning this one for another one. And with the new one see if I can remap the power button to the volume down or up button instead.

Evo 4g lte

I live in west Michigan and am waiting for the LTE system to be up and runningg to get my new phone after getting burned on the WiMax deal. I have become a huge fan of rooting since i did it on my evo earlier this year. I started thinking earlier today...
i wonder how long it will be before we can root the new evo 4g lte... I am not waiting to root this one, it will be done as soon as I can. I waited over a year to do my OG evo and i love the customization.

From what I've heard, it may be a long time. Read the other threads regarding the EVO LTE. Someone posted some bad news in all of them earlier today. Seems that HTC screwed us.

The new bootloaders are unlockable through HTC dev. So we will be able to unlock, but they are limited as they cannot mount usb in recovery.

They will find a way to s-off after 3-4 months. They found a crazy way to get s-off on the htc rezound using a wire and touching two pins on the back of the phone when the rooting software says to. I would like to know who figured that out. Amazing

I believe that NOTHING is impossible... no matter how hard phone manufacturers try to "screw" us and keep us from rooting, some dev will find a way to root/hack it. Im not eligible for my upgrade til October so that'll give them time to work it out.
One of the biggest factors for me is the non-removable battery.... I feel like that is my failsafe whenever the phone isnt responding. There better be a hot restart like holding the home and power putton like on the iPhone

There is. Plus there's a button combo to shut off the phone entirely, allowing you to theoretically either turn back on, or boot into recovery if something is really wrong. I think I heard you have to hold down the power button for like ten seconds straight or something like that. No worries, HTC wasn't THAT stupid.
But yes, I am of the belief that we will have our s-off eventually, and honestly, I don't need it for a while. I'm going to enjoy my new product stock, and I don't think I'll miss my flashing at all - that's how awesome this phone appears to perform. Now, down the road (6 to 12 months) when things are getting old and I want some tweaks, sure. But I bet by then, given the massive amount of popularity this phone will garner, I feel safe assuming someone will find a way around the issues.
As a side note, WOW to that story about the Rezound! That's incredible! Who decided once to just stick pins in their phone and see if that works??

HELP: Ghost Menu

Hey guys so I'm having an issue with a phone, it used to happen once in a blue moon, but now it's happening all the time to the point the phone is almost unusable. It acts as if menu keys are being pressed, when I'm not even touching the phone! This video is a great example, someone has to have seen this. What's the fix?

I used that fix for a while, but over time, the problem actually gets worse and the search key will start phantom pressing, too. If you're one of the unlucky E4GT owners who have this problem, eventually ALL the capacitive buttons start randomly phantom pressing. Just a heads up from experience.
I suggest running a custom ROM with a Navbar (softkeys) you can enable, and then disable all the hardware buttons.

This is how I fixed my fantom menu button, maybe not a good idea but I was tired no to be able to use my phone, so far no problems at all, I opened my phone and placed a piece of magnet sticker on top of a connector that goes to the bottom of the phone, the the piece of magnet is from a business card that I had on the front of my refrigerator so I cut a little piece of it and put it on top of the connector with the plastic side to the connector to make sure not to touch anything, here are some pictures of what i did, if you want to do it (it is on you) , I am just giving my results so far 3 weeks with no problems.

How is this working out still? I was contemplating doing it with a piece of rf shielding but that would've short circuited everything:laugh: That is totally genius on your part!
I loaded a custom ROM on mines and went back to EL26 modem (check my latest post to see the logic behind it)

I cannot. I believe the symptoms manifests in low signal environments, with the mobile network running. Turn off mobile data to test.
Some swear by it, but I lack the knowledge to validate it, as I am not an electrical engineer.
Much of this comes down to your tolerance for pain. I just bought the Note 3 due to this exact issue. Others have returned their phones because of it. Some replacements end up with this same problem, or busted power buttons.
If you have the desire to keep your phone and the ability to try the fix, then back up everything on it, and execute the procedure; or find someone who can.
Other options are turning off mobile networks whenever possible, trying to get a replacement, or...
Get another phone. The used marketplace is teaming with good deals on S3s, use an upgrade, get a granny phone. You have choice.
I hope that some of this is helpful.
Good luck!

The only REAL fix that I was able to get is sending it back to Sammy and they replaced the PBA(motherboard). This is after sending it back to them two other times and they replaced the LCD screen and mini-jack. I just got it back and gave it to my wife when I got the S3, and immediately she said that in 3g areas it did the phantom menu. After calling and telling them two returns is unacceptable, they expedited the repair, fixed the RIGHT thing this time, and in over a month, there's been zero issues. Not sure if this is an option for anyone as you may be out of warranty, just passing on what finally worked for me. Good luck.
I have had this issue, non-stop, for the past year. It has gotten worse so I contacted samsung and sent my D710 to them to have it repaired.
They replaced the screen, sent it back but immediately (while trying to activate with Sprint) my phone began the phantom menu button. Not only the menu, but I also get phantom search & back key presses. I sent the phone back to samsung, again, and this time they replaced the PBA and still, i have the phantom issue. I called samsung but wont send the phone back a 3rd time. So I visit the sprint store after finding these threads, and the sprint tech replaces my screen again (free of charge) and before I even start my car to leave the parking lot... phantom key presses all over again.
I am convinced there is no fix for this, other than a hardware hack. I tried the magnet trick you guys speak of, but it did not change a single thing. I can trigger the phantom key press by simply sending (or receiving) a text message. It makes it near impossible to have a text-conversation with anybody.
My last resort is to sell the phone on ebay or craigslist to some unsuspecting fool, and replace it with a HTC or some other brand who actually understand RF interference and how stupid it would be to place the 3G antenna anywhere near such a sensitive chip.

So Jared is your "fix" still working???

Screen looks... awful??

Has anyone noticed that, for all its pixel density, there is some really poor-looking emphasis on edges? Lots of places throughout the stock UI, fonts, icons, etc, will have their edges brighter than the rest of the object. What's more is this is not uniformly applied, so you wind up with some words or icons having this edge detection going on, and in other places, things look properly "flat".
Frankly it makes this "beautiful" screen look really ugly, since the UI it displays looks really ugly.
You may be talking about the over sharpening issue that's been discussed to death on these forums. Hopefully LG fixes it with an OTA update, or we get it fixed with ROMS.

Hoping for an OTA fix is a pipe dream. LG will not fix this since they will consider that they put a lot of hard work in to over sharpen their UI. Not your UI, their UI, for their phone. Not your phone. So that will never get fixed.
That, combined with the hilarious decision to put the buttons on the back, which no software can address, just kind of leaves some glaring issues. Issues? No, too soft a word. Let's just call them what they are. Errors. Errors in judgment, errors in design, whatever. They got it wrong.

Lol, buying a device with buttons on the back...just to come on xda and complain about buttons on the back? Okie
As far as the screen sharpness, they do need to address it somehow because black text are indeed awful (not to the point i will complain about them awful though)
Should have done your homework before buying a device that OBVIOUSLY came with buttons on the back though...considering it was flashed all over the internet so you cannot say "oh i bought it and realized buttons were on the back" lol

You have it, it just doesn't bother you. Good for you, my eyes are pretty sharp though and don't need LG's help in that regard. Button placement? Sure. Sure I knew that beforehand. That does not mean it's my error. It's still LG's error. See, I can't really use this thing before I purchase it. They have display models in stores, but the backs (and often the sides) are covered in whatever anti-theft anchoring the store uses. It's not until I get the device home, have it in my pocket, that these usability errors can really make themselves felt. It didn't bother me while the device was in my hand, I thought, well, maybe I will just learn, in time, where my fingers should go. Fine.
But then, and imagine this scenario as being one I cannot replicate in a store with a demo model, the phone was laying face side up on my desk, and I wanted to turn the volume down. Or I wanted to turn the screen off. I can do that without picking the phone up with just about all other phones in the world. Inconvenient. This is a small issue! This is not a big deal. But. But I paid $600 for this, I am not supposed to have to put up with some minor inconvenience, is how I see it. For their flagship phone, the top of LG's current heap, they shouldn't have got any "small issues" wrong. But they did. They got this wrong. And while people replying to this thread seem to want to forgive LG, and that is your prerogative, I refuse to do so.
Doesn't your phone have knock code to switch the screen off? Or have volume controls in the notification area?

Anyway, the screen looks terrible and the big beautiful screen is the biggest selling point (or am I wrong on this? some argue camera...).
I wouldn't return the phone because the buttons were on the back and yes, "lol", I knew they were there before, during, and after purchasing it.
The big beautiful screen turning out to be not very beautiful, now that, that I could return a phone over. There's not even an option to disable the over-sharpening. Tell me that is not a design failure.
Why is this thread even in existence? This topic been covered elsewhere and not to mention the rest of the post are off topic.

I have found that the stock theme/wallpapers/icons etc don't do the device any favors. Tweaking these things made the phone much more tolerable for me.

Including but not limited to. Sharpening is an issue, but since you cannot disable it, and since it is not by default enabled across all text rendering, not in all apps, etc, it's not uniform. The UI winds up non uniform. The entire graphical feel of it seems mixed and weird. So it made me feel like the display itself was not that great. I actually wondered if there was something physically wrong with my screen. Or, since it was not a uniform problem, was it only one part of the screen that was perhaps damaged or something.

First, to your last post, the hardware buttons no software can address?
Tweaksbox can, they are hardware buttons like all others, it doesn't matter where they are on the device.
Turning the device off while flat on the table? Double tab the statusbar (yes, works with every launcher and in any app).
Sound: volume slider within notifications?!
If it's that much of an issue for you, swap it, simple as that, i do like having the buttons on the back, why? I can't press them by accident while gaming and i love the feel of having just the edges while in hand.
Last but not least, the oversharpening is your point, i don't really notice it and really like the screen, but that doesn't matter, that's just me, but anyways I'm pretty sure there will come an update for it, if not, that's xda, the bootloader unlock is almost released, there will be a fix for that, because, you know what, it's our device and we can mod the hell out of it if we like to. Every flagship has it's flaws, there isn't any perfect device on the market, if those of this device bug you too much, swap it for another, maybe those flaws you can stand.

Buttons on the back is not an ERROR its lg DESIGN go to the lg 2 you will see, it wasn't thought over night...do not place your dislike on lg "error"
over sharpness been talked to death as it is. I never understand why people complain, don't like something return it. Its that much of an issue? return it. since I have gotten the phone I have only touched the volume keys for one, and only one thing....to take screen shot. Knock on puts the phone on for me, a simple double tap. If I want to be fancy, I can use the knock code or w.e the hell they call it. I only need my volume on two things, silent, vibration and sound...if its too loud notification is there to reduce it or voila...the buttons on the back a simple press will fix it.I do not need to move my hand in any weird kind of a way to do anything, I do not accidently have to press on the volume keys like i have done so many times.
The screen is beautiful without auto brightness. The oversharpness is batter of taste...you will either like it or you will hate it. You obviously hate it so very simple, return the phone instead of beating on the same dead horse. The screen is awful? we knoooooooooooooooooow from xda and all over the net and all over google + and every social media....the text are sharp? we knoooooooooooooooooooow...go return the phone.

You are complaining about my complaints. I never understand why people complain about other people complaining. Don't like my complaint, ignore it. It's that much of an issue? Close your browser. :silly:
And with that, reported. We don't need another repetitive, argumentative thread that goes nowhere.
Than get rid of the error and return the phone like you said, no custom rom will fix that itch for you. Stop being a statistic of the list of people beating on the same dead horse.
Good luck on your future ventures I HOPE you do far more research on your next phone hunt huh? You rarely post in this forum as it is according to your junior status, member of 2011. Let hope the next post you choose to do about that phone wont result in something like this

Changing back/recents button?

If I DO get this phone, I will be new to HTC. Debating on this or the G5. Looking at the pics of this phone, the back button is on the left, recents on right. Can this be swapped? If not, I will not be getting the HTC. Sounds stupid, I know, but super OCD about that and I'm a righty.
The buttons are in the right way, they are even in the Google's way, there are some manufactures who like to use it in a different way.
If you can't adapt to that change and that is a deal breaker, you should probably go with another phone or an iphone, no back button there
On another note there might be someone who makes a mod to add this if you're rooted...
L->R back-home-recents....
Standard android layout. This isnt an HTC issue.

I never said this was an issue with HTC at all. I was just asking if you can change these buttons (like LG). Samsung also has them L->R Recents-Home-Back.
Since I'm right handed with shorter thumbs, I can't deal with having to cross over to back out of something rather than a quick press near where my thumb hovers.
Bringing up an iPhone is completely irrelevant as I never said I don't like a back button (don't get me started how annoying that is that they don't have one when I'm showing someone who has one something).
I figured a mod, but didn't know if this was changeable without it.
I'm sure everyone has stupid reasons why they won't get a certain phone, guess I found mine. Thanks for the replies.
You can possibly do it via root and xposed, but it would only change the function of the buttons.

You are right. It does sound stupid. Buttons are as Google intended.
