Settings > Display > Touch key light duration > Always on. This will have the buttons lit as long as the screen is awake. It doesn't really affect my battery, and it helps me a lot since I'm coming from Evo 4G , and E3D.
i wish there was a way of replacing the menu and search keys
I've been having the same issue, its gonna take some getting used to thats for sure.
luckily i also have the droid charge with it's rearranged buttons, so going from evo4g to the et4g isn't much of a problem for me.
i prefer having back lights always off. in the dark, the physical buttons on the charge are a plus.
Holy ****.. My bad.. I just created a thread over exactly the same problem.
I "didn't read first ".
I thought it was just me.
Anyway, I'll ask that it get pulled..
And BTW,
yes.. It's definitely driving me crazy too. I'm going in with a Torx screwdriver in 5, 4, 3,......

Drives me nuts as well! I also wish the button backlight was controlled by the ambient light sensor like the Evo.
HTC flipped their buttons from other phones. I had a nexus, matrix, mt4g and they all have the same layout as the galaxy.
Not HTC..

Oh, well.
Then I'm f%cked.
I've ONLY owned HTC phones in the past.. and I can proudly say that I've spent a VERY unhealthy amount of time on those phones.
*This is hardwired into my head.
It would be unfair of me to even consider asking my brain to switch back, lol.
<<This space for rent>>
You'll get used to it. I had an Evo and a Galaxy Tab at the same time, and I kept hitting the wrong one at first, but I eventually became bilingual and hit the right button on either device without thinking about it. I think I've hit the wrong button on the ET a few times, but it hasn't been an issue so far.
I have to say, I like the HTC arrangement better since I use the menu button more than the home button and it's easier to get to with my thumb in the middle.
Too funny. Just got my E4GT yesterday then went to show my gf something on her Evo last night and I kept hitting the wrong button. I just thought I was retarded but I guess I'm already forming habits with the E4GT.

This is killing me. I am sure there is a way to do it once full root is achieved. No one wants to experiment with a non reversible method. I have had the phone since launch day and still cannot get use to it

It's hard to understand why this isn't standardized. Then again, it seems to be HTC that's different, and to me HMBS is more intuitive than MHBS.

I don't think it's just you..
HMBS just makes a lot more freaking sense.
The Home button should be "by itself", whether that's at the end of a row (like HTC does it), or set apart completely, like maybe this:
MBS
H
This ABSOLUTELY needed to be standardized by Google.
(I'm driving to Larry Page's house right now to punch him in the mouth.)

This is my first Android phone. I had iPhone, 3g, and 4 before grabbing the One X. I thought spec wise this phone is amazing, I love the screen and camera so much and ICS finally made Android as smooth if not smoother than iPhones with GPU acceleration. Now I am having issues that's making me think about returning it.
Issues
-Pandora randomly skips songs and buffers a lot
-No lock screen controls on Pandora
-Bought two games on the Play store (Worms & GTA3), they do not work
-The main home screen (the one that it goes to when you hit the home button), changes on me, and nobody seems to know how to set it.
-If you use a pattern screen lock, you still have to slide the ring open before you can do the pattern
Are these Android issues or One X issues? Do you think they will get solved, and how soon? I have 9 days to return this, seriously considering it and just using my iPhone 4 until the new iPhone comes out. Any and all opinions are appreciated.
Thanks

If you felt like reading more... I absolutely love the HOX. The screen is gorgeous and such a pleasure to use. I love the camera as well, it takes amazing pictures, and they looks great on said gorgeous screen. I really want to like this phone, but some of these issues are deal breakers for me and worry me about just putting up with issues like these for two years.
/edit Posted in wrong section, this is an AT&T variant. Can't see where to delete this, so a mod can move it or I suppose it's mostly relevant here.
I would return my phone if the battery life was extremely poor, too much lag, too many bugs or screen flickering. Not cause there no lock screen controls for pandora or you have to unlock the ring after a password. But if those are deal breakers for you then yes, you should return it.
To be honest, this is an amazing phone, it is beautiful, fast and smooth.
To optimize it however, I would suggest rooting it and using a custom rom, which might (just might, don't know for sure) fix your homescreen problem, and for the Pandora and the games you bought, try un-installing and re-installing, if that doesnt work ; email the developers asking for help or answers, I emailed before for 'ISyncr' and got a reply and a fix in less than 2 hours.
Also, for the pull the ring before pattern, im sure on an iphone you haveto slide it before you can put it in number to unlock? Hope this helps
Thanks for the replays. since I want to like this phone so much, I'll try to.root it tomorrow. I work tomorrow so it will be later.
Not sure if I'll get an answer here, but if I root and try some roms will I be able to return it to stock and return it? as I said above, I'm on the AT&T one x.

So being a good xda noob, should I go create another thread while this one is still open? I don't know why they don't have the option to delete your own threads, especially when I had no replies on it.
Has anyone noticed that, for all its pixel density, there is some really poor-looking emphasis on edges? Lots of places throughout the stock UI, fonts, icons, etc, will have their edges brighter than the rest of the object. What's more is this is not uniformly applied, so you wind up with some words or icons having this edge detection going on, and in other places, things look properly "flat".
Frankly it makes this "beautiful" screen look really ugly, since the UI it displays looks really ugly.
You may be talking about the over sharpening issue that's been discussed to death on these forums. Hopefully LG fixes it with an OTA update, or we get it fixed with ROMS.

Hoping for an OTA fix is a pipe dream. LG will not fix this since they will consider that they put a lot of hard work in to over sharpen their UI. Not your UI, their UI, for their phone. Not your phone. So that will never get fixed.
That, combined with the hilarious decision to put the buttons on the back, which no software can address, just kind of leaves some glaring issues. Issues? No, too soft a word. Let's just call them what they are. Errors. Errors in judgment, errors in design, whatever. They got it wrong.

You knew the buttons were on the back before you bought it so the error is yours if you find there placement an issue.
I think the screen is fantastic and don't have the problem you speak of.

Lol, buying a device with buttons on the back...just to come on xda and complain about buttons on the back? Okie
As far as the screen sharpness, they do need to address it somehow because black text are indeed awful (not to the point i will complain about them awful though)
Should have done your homework before buying a device that OBVIOUSLY came with buttons on the back though...considering it was flashed all over the internet so you cannot say "oh i bought it and realized buttons were on the back" lol

You have it, it just doesn't bother you. Good for you, my eyes are pretty sharp though and don't need LG's help in that regard. Button placement? Sure. Sure I knew that beforehand. That does not mean it's my error. It's still LG's error. See, I can't really use this thing before I purchase it. They have display models in stores, but the backs (and often the sides) are covered in whatever anti-theft anchoring the store uses. It's not until I get the device home, have it in my pocket, that these usability errors can really make themselves felt. It didn't bother me while the device was in my hand, I thought, well, maybe I will just learn, in time, where my fingers should go. Fine.
But then, and imagine this scenario as being one I cannot replicate in a store with a demo model, the phone was laying face side up on my desk, and I wanted to turn the volume down. Or I wanted to turn the screen off. I can do that without picking the phone up with just about all other phones in the world. Inconvenient. This is a small issue! This is not a big deal. But. But I paid $600 for this, I am not supposed to have to put up with some minor inconvenience, is how I see it. For their flagship phone, the top of LG's current heap, they shouldn't have got any "small issues" wrong. But they did. They got this wrong. And while people replying to this thread seem to want to forgive LG, and that is your prerogative, I refuse to do so.
Doesn't your phone have knock code to switch the screen off? Or have volume controls in the notification area?

Anyway, the screen looks terrible and the big beautiful screen is the biggest selling point (or am I wrong on this? some argue camera...).
I wouldn't return the phone because the buttons were on the back and yes, "lol", I knew they were there before, during, and after purchasing it.
The big beautiful screen turning out to be not very beautiful, now that, that I could return a phone over. There's not even an option to disable the over-sharpening. Tell me that is not a design failure.

Including but not limited to. Sharpening is an issue, but since you cannot disable it, and since it is not by default enabled across all text rendering, not in all apps, etc, it's not uniform. The UI winds up non uniform. The entire graphical feel of it seems mixed and weird. So it made me feel like the display itself was not that great. I actually wondered if there was something physically wrong with my screen. Or, since it was not a uniform problem, was it only one part of the screen that was perhaps damaged or something.

First, to your last post, the hardware buttons no software can address?
Tweaksbox can, they are hardware buttons like all others, it doesn't matter where they are on the device.
Turning the device off while flat on the table? Double tab the statusbar (yes, works with every launcher and in any app).
Sound: volume slider within notifications?!
If it's that much of an issue for you, swap it, simple as that, i do like having the buttons on the back, why? I can't press them by accident while gaming and i love the feel of having just the edges while in hand.
Last but not least, the oversharpening is your point, i don't really notice it and really like the screen, but that doesn't matter, that's just me, but anyways I'm pretty sure there will come an update for it, if not, that's xda, the bootloader unlock is almost released, there will be a fix for that, because, you know what, it's our device and we can mod the hell out of it if we like to. Every flagship has it's flaws, there isn't any perfect device on the market, if those of this device bug you too much, swap it for another, maybe those flaws you can stand.

Buttons on the back is not an ERROR its lg DESIGN go to the lg 2 you will see, it wasn't thought over night...do not place your dislike on lg "error"
over sharpness been talked to death as it is. I never understand why people complain, don't like something return it. Its that much of an issue? return it. since I have gotten the phone I have only touched the volume keys for one, and only one thing....to take screen shot. Knock on puts the phone on for me, a simple double tap. If I want to be fancy, I can use the knock code or w.e the hell they call it. I only need my volume on two things, silent, vibration and sound...if its too loud notification is there to reduce it or voila...the buttons on the back a simple press will fix it.I do not need to move my hand in any weird kind of a way to do anything, I do not accidently have to press on the volume keys like i have done so many times.
The screen is beautiful without auto brightness. The oversharpness is batter of taste...you will either like it or you will hate it. You obviously hate it so very simple, return the phone instead of beating on the same dead horse. The screen is awful? we knoooooooooooooooooow from xda and all over the net and all over google + and every social media....the text are sharp? we knoooooooooooooooooooow...go return the phone.

Than get rid of the error and return the phone like you said, no custom rom will fix that itch for you. Stop being a statistic of the list of people beating on the same dead horse.

I am looking at buying an m9 but had a few questions. Are the m9s able to get s off and rooted with unlocked boot loader ?
I looked around and found varying answers. Are only certain android versions root able and s off?
I was going to buy a note 4 but I feel Samsung's phone can be laggy due to their software.

Yes, you need to send it to someone to S-Off it. I did, rooted/unlocked running Viper.
But with that said...I hate this phone. First time the HTC One has disappointed me. Guess they assume everybody on the planet is right handed...the power button is located in the dumbest location. Everytime I pick up the phone, I'm either turning the flashlight on, hitting the power button etc..with my fingers...just no way around it..stupid design.
Unless HTC pulls some serious improvements, likely the shortest time I will ever own an HTC...and I love the Sense interface..but can't take this M9, and even worse, being on VZW since there is such limited support.
Might just change phones altogether.
But, have fun, it is a pain to get the phone S-Off, even knowing somebody with javacard, sending it off, then the ROMs available for limited etc...sad to say the least.
Good luck.

To each their own. I love this phone. I have had a test handset since January, mostly stock, only sometimes rooted and I like pretty much everything about it. The camera is great; the screen is better than the M8; the speakers are phenomenal (and I use Boomsound a lot). I eventually sold my M8 and bought a second-hand M9 for when I have to turn this one back in to HTC. The overheating problems have largely been resolved, at least on the latest ROM I'm running, which should go public before too long at this point.
And it was no problem to hook-up with @dottat and get my non-UT handset S-OFF and rooted. It's ready to roll as soon as I send my UT device back to HTC.
Camera is an embarrassment still compared to iPhone...my wife's 6 plus and daughter's regular 6 still take much more accurate and better pictures by miles compared to the M9, I'm running Viper, have been for years on their Roms. Tried other things.
It is just the annoyance of the design/button layout that bothers me the most, and complete lack of support almost of the VZW users. There are better improvements I like with Sense, and as I said, I love Sense. Only reason I still have the Android phone...regular Android is still pretty pathetic..particularly the applications compared to WinMo and Apple. Like HTC/Sense, they make their mail and other apps built into the phone very slick/polished and nice. The regular android mail/calendar apps look like some 10yr old Linux mail app running under xwindows. Kind of sad that in 2015, regular Android apps are so sucky compared to HTC/Apple/MS apps in general that come on the stock android platform. If it weren't for HTC and Sense, not sure, probably have a stupid iPhone or WinMo.
Still hate apple iPhone though and Windows latest is kind of a mess as well.
Just wish somebody would make some really nice clean looking apps/interfaces with Android with good features similar to Sense, that isn't HTC...the M9 is their best effort so far with the camera, but the button layout is just a step backwards.
So, HTC still is the leader when in comes to much things Android from my perspective...
As you said, to each their own...but become left handed, then come back and tell me how many times a day you turn the flashlight on accidentally, hit the up/down volume buttons etc...their location are a mess compared to the M8, which besides the camera, never had really a complaint with that phone.
Maybe should have stuck with the M8..haha...
But have no fear the all new M9 will solve everything!!!!
See ya around guys. Or maybe over on the new Google Nexus forum or something...rofl.
Sorry...off topic I know.

There's really nothing that I find that I need to root the 5x for besides maybe improved camera or battery life if a ROM exists that would even do that. I read somewhere that there are issues with rooting of 5x so curious what the pros and cons are for this particular phone. Is it even necessary? Even Xposed is not quite dialed in enough and not sure if I even need those modules after all the improvements and marshmallow. What do you think?

I just rooted to remove the Google bloat, I was thinking about not doing it at all, comparing the benefits
Betterbatterystats to know what's going on
Custom roms, I like the convenience that roms offer with options,
Volume to skip tracks, helps with driving,
Recents button to last app, helps with banking and emails,
Fast unlock with pin, and menu button on navi bar,
Quick tiles, I like then small icons in one row,
Remove orangeness in battery saver,
Make doze start after 3mins instead of 30 mins,
Restoring apps and settings from nexus 5 took less than an hour, very little downtime.
Catalyst rom
And kernel improvements
I see what op means, I rooted all my droids, and its a habbit, now it's at a point where you can get by with stock,
I root for xposed which allows me to have my back button always on the right side, volume key long-press to skip tracks ( but doesnt matter to my iems since the headphone out is quite bad), greenify and adaway.
Why did you root your previous phones? Are these reasons found in the 5x i.e ads, pure stock android, xposed customizations?

i guess good for you if you don't notice any ads. when i switched to the 5X and had to go a week without root/adaway i was shocked by the amount of ads i was confronted with and how much they actually influenced the my experience and the performance of the phone. when i finally got root/adaway to work especially browsing was way more smooth and enjoyable. also not having to worry about accidentally touching one of those ads in certain apps while never planning to do so anyway is a relief to me.
there are little things, simple tasks like checking the weather forecast, which i want to do as quickly as possible. ads can potentially interrupt such tasks, when browsing it can even get as bad as lagging out the whole app/device, which just shouldn't happen (also i have better things to spend my data-limit on than ads that take up more space than the website itself).
for me adblocking is quite a big deal and hugely improves my experience with the device, which of course is subjective.
apart from that though, most of the issues i had with android and solved through rooting have mostly vanished. i still vividly remember replacing the battery indicator to show a numeric value on my original galaxy S1 back when FroYo came out. changing or even having quick settings at all was important to me as well. now with 6.0 and at least for the time being, stock android has that build in and i'm ok with the implementation.
the only apps using root on my devices are adaway, a file browser for good measure, and titanium backup. and that covers all my needs for now, but i wouldn't want to miss any of them as well.
This is my first Nexus that I haven't rooted OTB (had N4, N5, N6 still have N5 and both N7's). Still on stock so far on N5X. It does everything I need it to do and more in its stock form and its nice not having to troubleshoot issues because I'm running mods/kernels/roms.
I also must admit my time is scarce these days and I don't have the free time needed to tinker. Doesn't mean I won't though. I love the simple fact that I can mod easily...when the mood hits for me to tinker.
Maybe I'm just an old fart is part of it too...but I also believe that today's 6.0.1 is so good on its own there is much less reason to root vs the old days on ginger/honey/ice cream/etc...

Or just having the ability to change maximum stock volumes.
This is the exact reason why there's so many people leaving XDA, because the OP has a legitimate question, and half of you don't answer and just say "well don't root then."
I've rooted every phone I've had and I'm going to soon with my N5x, but like the OP, there seem to be new parameters in place for rooting the 5x and 6p, such as the system-less root and that thing I heard where it wants the user to tap something on their phone while rooting to know they are going to void their warranty, plus whatever else is going on. I have to read more.
To answer the OP, I need CyanogenMod 13 so badly because the features are unbelievable. Adding the magnifying glass search icon and left/right toggles for scrolling through text is a must in the navigation bar at the bottom.
Also the advance and previous track option while holding up or down on the volume rocker was so useful.
Then there's titanium backup which needs no explanation of how great that is.
So if you are ready and willing to root your phone and void your warranty (but you can always un-root so this isn't a huge deal), there are so many more options available to you as you already know anyway. I like to wait a couple months to make sure my phone is not defective in any way just in case I have to use the warranty. Once I know it's in good working shape, I'll root when I get the time.
Enjoy.
Adaway, Camera Shutter noise off, kill all tasks in recent apps is why i rooted.

No one cares if people like the op leave. With stupid questions like this, most of us are glad. We only care when someone that actually contributes leaves. Usually that happens because of people like the op.
