I been rooted for about a month now and love it, glad i did it and would never go back. i have the wireless tethering, Hulu and i pretty much seen every custom rom out their possible and have found that Myn Warm is obviously the best one out their and i know plenty would agree.
One thing i haven't gotten around to is Kernels. i'm running the custom kernel that came with this rom and i don't really see a difference in my baterry life, my battery dies just as much if i am using it as it is when its on stand by. (Carrying around a spare battery with me wherever i go is getting embarrassing )
I want to know everything there is to know about kernels possible in this thread so all the bright minds of AC please put your input here and even suggest your own if you'd like.
What i'm really trying to find out is
. What is a kernel and what does it mainly do
. How much voltage can a Evo take so i can find out what kernel fits best
. How do i install a kernel? is it same as flashing a custom Rom? and do you need to Wipe everything as you would a rom
. How long until you can tell if a Kernel is actually working
Thanks in advance
This link is your best friend I promise.

Also battery life is a tough question to answer man it's all about how one uses their phone. Personally I just discovered this little trick; if you turn this off your battery life will double or triple!

Turning off mobile data will just cut off apps from using data(twitter, Facebook, etc). I just turn it on when I need it. You'll still receive calls and text but man I've tripled my battery life. P.S nice avatar.
You install a kernel the same way you do a rom; go into recovery and flash zip. Usually the kernel has built in scripts to wipe dalvik, cache, and etc. Also flashing a kernel will not wipe your rom and its a very easy and safe process. To check if its installed, go to settings, then phone information it should show you the installed kernel. I usually give a kernel about a day or two to check/compare performance/battery. Good luck

Turning off mobile data puts the "data" to sleep so you cant browse the web. But when you find yourself not using the phone turn it(the mobile data) off and I promise your battery will last a long time. When its on your phones radio is constantly being used which of course kills the battery. Its just a tip man you don't have to turn it off. I'm usually always around wifi so I turn it off; if I'm not by wifi I turn it on when I need it. I figured this out like a week ago and done many test to convince myself I wasn't crazy. I went from 10hrs moderate use to about 31hrs moderate use(regular battery).

i love the idea, im around wifi 90% of my life and im going to start trying that, i was wondering if there was a way to not let apps run in the background but only when i use it, guess this is what it comes to.
But still when i'm not at home or work i'm still going to have a battery issue, when i get around to that thread you posted hopefully i find the right kernel to help me out on the road

I could suggest some kernels for bettery battery life; that link also has some really helpful information. What rom are you running? I like to run sbc kernels to give my battery that "complete charge" lol. Check out this pic to prove I wasn't crazy. I pulled the phone off the charger 15hrs ago, battery still with 52% left. I got another 15 hours out of it by turning it off(mobile data). I'm also around wifi alot myself. Using wifi doesn't drain the battery not even half as fast as mobile data.

Ahhh excellent choice. Myns 2.2 and koni's elite are my favorite sense roms. Well my battery stats looks different because I'm running a different rom. I always switch back and forth between sense and aosp. Same things I've said apply both both by the way; I've tested on sense and aosp. In sense I believe you go to settings, then about phone, and then it should say battery stats. On aosp it looks this way.
~ d3rk
yeah i got it dude thanks alot for the help.
i can't seem to use any other rom, in my opinion nothing is going to compete with Myn's roms anytime soon. this guy is a guru when it comes to these things and i can't wait for a new update on warm 2.2
Can you post KONI Elite, im pretty sure i have seen every theme out their but can't bring to mind which one that is
Word. Yeah myns 2.2 was flawless to me. I'd rate koni's right behind it; koni is more into theming and his roms are sick. The two rocks are probably neck and neck I don't know which I like more. I guess if I had to pick I'd roll with myn.

Myns i love you, but i think i gotta try this out lol
dirkyd3rk, from post #5, I can see that you're using cm7 (or some variation of GB). In 2.2 sense, we had the option - enable mobile data always on under network settings. This permitted the 3g data to remain on even when the phone was in sleep mode. If this was turned off, 5 minutes after the screen turned off, so did the mobile data. I don't see an equivalent option in cm7. It's either always on, or always off. Of course, depending on your particular setup, one option may be preferable over the other.
In the case of the OP, this may actually be useful. Mobile data would be on any time the screen is on, without any further user action. When the device is sleeping, so is the data (after 5 min).
Now to the OP, be aware that having this option set that way, anything push related will not work. Finally, i'm unsure if other tasks such as weather updates will still work correctly when the screen is off.
If there is no way to enable this functionality in a GB rom, and you want this capability, your only recourse is to use a froyo based rom.

Samsung Galaxy SII Epic 4g Touch
I have recently installed this new ROM and I love it! One down of it is the battery life. But I've disabled google now services and my battery improved at almost 40% lol It's nice to have it but It's also annoying to charge your phone every four hours. Im pretty sure there is a bug continuously running that drains the battery that fast. or maybe this syncing options are not very efficient.
Now going back to the point, the bad problem is that my phone is not recognizing my memory card. Other programs recognize it like file manager and others but every time I go to gallery my phone doesnt recognize the pictures from it. Also the music player doesnt see the music I have on it either. Frustrating :/
I have done so far this:
1. Unmounted and re mounted the memory card using the ROM
2 Unmounted and re mounted the memory card using the ClockworkMod
3. Formatted the memory card many ways and different formats
4. Used a different (blank) memory card with one file
I also read another thread from previous codename ROMs about putting a null file on certain folders? I cant recall it right now, but theres is one thread about it. That did not work as well.
Does anybody have this issue about the memory card? if anyone have any other thoughts or any solution please help and lets discuss about it.

Yes i had that issue as well, I just moved my pics and music to my internal card. its a quick fix. But I had that issue on CM9 but not on CM10 tho. just those two. So, hoped this helps ya. I really didn't look into it that deep. as soon as i moved the stuff over to my internal, I was good. you might wanna search the new CNA thread. see if there is a fix in there.
Did you do a clean install? My battery life on the current version of Codename is very good and only a bit less than ICS. There is some JB kernel development in place at the moment to clean up some of these remaining glitches. That's why this and other JB ROMs are still in alpha.
What governor are you using? Try pegasusq governor, it works for me. I'm also slightly undervolted.
This is from a fairly normal days use, heavy on Pandora. Stock battery

If everything worked like it is suppose to while flashing, GPS lock is not an issue with this ROM according to the development team. I have been using it for a few weeks and the only time I had GPS issues is when I tried out a few other ROMS for a couple of days and then nandroid back. GPS, batt issues, and messaging issues showed up, so it probably didnt get wiped very well before I restored teh nandroid.
Try a fresh install from GB kernal and see if that helps with any issues. That is what I did a few days ago and everything is working well again.
You have to get a gps lock in a touchwiz rom before flashing this for best results. I just used the fi27 one click for that. Do the one click update prl and profile, got a gps lock then flashed codename following the instructions on what to wipe.

Thanks, did that and it didnt work. Everything seems to be pretty good with this ROM except the ROM. Did a clean re install and the same. I guess I did something wrong, but for what I've been reading, a good percentage of people is having either the gps issue or the memory card reading issue.

There is a fix for the GPS in development called JB Tweaks. My GPS would lock in about a min before, but now it takes 10-15 seconds. I would recommend using Alpha 1 build for now. Some are reporting fc's on 3 and battery drains on 2.1.
CNA is actually a pretty sturdy ROM. Your battery life issues can't entirely be fixed, but they can be improved greatly by a few simple things:
- Use CNA's "Performance" tab in the settings. It should be right there towards the top.
- Underclock your CPU to 800 - 1000MHz. There isn't a huge difference between the two, but whichever you prefer. I don't do a lot of gaming type processes on my phone so I am perfectly content with 800MHz.
- Change the I/O Governor to "pegasusq" with a matching I/O Scheduler of "noop." I've personally had / seen a lot of people have success with that combo.
- Turn off completely your Auto-Sync. I have my e-mail settings set to only refresh when I tell it too. Same goes for Weather applications, or any app that will run in the background invisibly, especially Facebook! Watch out for that one. They can prevent your phone from deep sleep.
- Change your brightness to a setting that is comfortable for you during the day and night, so that way your phone isn't constantly trying to do that for you.
- INVERTED GAPPS. The dominant black really helps keep the screen from using a lot of power and you will probably notice a difference when the battery has been calibrated correctly.
Hope some of those tips help you out! It's taken me some time to discover what I am most comfortable using, but I have figured it all out.
As for the SD Card issue. Might I recommend trying a different Root Explorer? Perhaps ES File Explorer or even "Root Explorer" from the Play Store? I know there has been a few issues like that for me, and honestly, I am still trying to figure them out myself. It somehow manages to correct itself, because I will wake up the next day with it working just fine. I personally use ES File explorer. I love the layout and it's free. Can't beat free.

Thanks for all the tips man! they are incredible and I've done some of them too. I stated at the beginning that the battery was really bad but I've managed to fix all those problems. A good calibration helps a lot too. Later I said I wasnt having problems with the battery and discovered my GPS wasnt working. I think Im gonna try different things ( I havent tried anything because school is killing me and I have time for nothing) so little by little Im getting there.
but thanks anyway, those recommendations are just perfect for anybody that wants to have a better battery life

GPS is an easy fix, get on a tw rom, turn on GPS and get a lock, leave GPS on and locked, then boot to a safe recovery and flash the rom u want to use. GPS will now work normally, if your lock is slow on the new rom download GPS status & toolbox and clear A-GPS data and redownload the data and it will lock fast, I can get lock within 2m indoors in less than 30sec on my et4g

Ok so I've been using Jelly Bomb 13 for a while now.
I've been having issues with it, I'm not sure if its the ROM itself, or if its Just Jelly Bean, and some of the Apps I run.
I'd like to explore other ROMS, but don't want to waste my time, when I'm not clear what some of the roms are offering.
I will start with my observations.
First JBomb 13 issues.
I've had weird problems with the alarm clock, changing its settings, etc...
It does this annoying thing when the lock screen wakes up if I try to lock it again the screen turns of then back on again.
Desktop rotation freezes sometimes.
Lately the entire phone freezes and I have to remove the battery to reboot it.
I don't know if this is related to skype on my phone. Skype seems to be pretty damn unstable on this phone (or all phones).
Sometimes volume control won't change volume for current app being used (probably just Android??)
There is absolutely no way to get the water and ink effect to work on my lockscreen.
Also I had an issue where I powered off the phone, but it powered up as I was removing the battery, and caused all my system settings to reset, as well as screwed up a bunch of my installed programs where I had to manually delete the files, before It would allow me to reinstall the apps. I'm not quite sure that I've fully recovered from that issue a lot of settings I had to go and tweak.
Ok my confusion and Questions:
There are several devs:
Besides their list of things they've tweaked or changed, I'm not really clear on why these are compelling reasons to use their roms.
I've noticed that [Team Nocturnal], has several different roms being worked on, but their sites don't reflect what the various branches are,
or why one may be better for certain users than others.
So my question to the Devs especially ones like [Team Nocturnal] Why don't you make specific distinctions between the various roms. It seems like to many of these roms are obsessively focused on the aesthetic.
I am assuming its more of a ME TOO thing, than "Look what I can offer you" thing.
I really liked "The Blu Khuban" from Team Nocturnal on my EPIC4G touch, I would love something like that for my Galaxy note 2, the update feature was great.
Also I have paid for stuff like Sketch Book and Papyrus, Personally I like some of the general pencil, and ink tools better, on S-Note...
Is it impossible to implement touchwiz stuff in Cyanogen? I used Cyanogen9 on my Epic4G touch and loved it except for they couldn't get the damn Wimax Modem working stable.
At the moment I think I will just go back to a stock de-odexed ROM, and tweak my OS myself as much as I can. Aesthetics are nice, but I feel like some of the tweaks in Jelly Bomb overlap and interfere with each other. Not sure if this is the case, but its very difficult to sift through 800 pages on Jelly Bomb...

I still think the question of why these dev's don't talk about the strengths, of their particular roms.
and I'm still confused why a group like Team Venum is working on so many different roms, but they again
they don't really try and up sell or distinguish the differences.

Well of course thats part of it, but there are different levels of users, some of us want a cool theme, and some of us want to really tweak with our hardware, or have specific applications and tasks we want to optimize our devices to perform.
Since you know team nocturnal already and seem to like it, you should come check out the Lab Rats Rom. It is made by team nocturnal and includes the ever popular updater. There are multiple themes and mods, but there are very few apps and theming included on the base install, that way you choose what you want and it's not forced on you.
Feel free to ask any questions in our thread!

This is just a pet peeve thing but guys, its CyanogenMod 9/10/10.1, not Cyanogen 9/10/10.1 lol. Not directed at you, just see this a lot in general
To answer some of your question, your apps will work still as the spen still functions as a stylus but some of the more integrated stuff in Touchwiz is not possible. I know on CM10.1, theres some stylus gesture features ive been testing on CM gerrit that bring some of this functionality back.

I would suggest you try Stock rooted Deodexed MA7. Then you can use Titanium to remove some of the bloat.
Then if you want to spruce it up a bit you can flash Morphology (Themes section) to change the status bar, dialer etc.
If you want a custom bootanimation Kevinrocksman (Themes section again) has a nice user friendly zip you flash in recovery and you can select a custom bootanimation.
You do what I suggested above and you will have a relatively bug free experience (unless you delete a system app you shouldn't of touched.)

I'm sure ull probably protest this statement but it sounds like you didn't follow instructions when flashing. I've been using Jellybomb since the inception and I never had one of those bugs on 13. We have to ask ourselves when we run into problems no one else has what did I do wrong? If no one is helping you figure out ur problems no one else is experiencing them. Sometimes jellybomb works better when u dirty flash on top of an older version sometimes a clean install is better. Every rom and every phone is different. There is somewhat of a luck factor when flashing that everyone expects should be universal to all roms and every phone should act the same. I've literally flashed and restored 20x in different ways and combinations to get some roms working perfect. Sometimes u just have to make sure u have all the files to fix ur phone then just play around. You only get more comfortable with the process each time u flash f it up fix it and reflash. It's not as easy as expecting others to figure it out for you but u get more out of it and u won't feel so helpless in the future. Just my $.02. Also pulling the battery in the middle of a boot cycle is never recommended for any computing device. I suspect u could be right in that ur still experiencing issues from that. U should probably Odin back to stock and try again. Also if ur firmware version isn't lk8 then that firmware is not compatible with Jellybomb 13. 13 is lk8 only. The newer 15.3 is a hybrid so u can use any firmware with the rom. And why are you still on 13 when 15.3 is out anyway?

Ok, I've retired my Gnex after a lot of love. It's currently running PA 3.99. It just couldn't complete with the days and days of battery life of some of the newer models. I'm thinking of putting a barebones build on it, but that seems to be counterintuitive to everything android. Every rom in existence has every feature known to man enabled, and they are all bloated.
Does anyone know of any rom maker that would be interested in taking the PA source, disabling 99.9% of the bloat, and making me a "Wifi streaming / mp3 playing / 4 or 5 days of battery life monster. I'll affectionatly call it "Gym Rom"
I assume that something like 4.2.2 with AK would be a good start, as AK seemed to be the best battery life.
Being that this is going to be a wifi only device, what is the best way to disable LTE/3g? I know it can be done in settings, but is there a rom way to do this?
Other things I'd really love to see rolled into "Gym Rom" -- Nova launcher, MapMyRun, Myfitnesspal, Zombies Run, and Apollo.
last but not least, gapps, but really only the absolute basics -- Play store, so the apps can be installed if needed.
Thoughts?
Uhh... Take a pure AOSP ROM, install AK and your desired apps, and go Airplane Mode? What's the point of having the devs do everything for ya when DIY is a few clicks away?
And to have Play Store you need to sign into Google, which then requires several other apps in the gapps package.

I can think of like 6 stock roms out there, that's just off the top of my head. Anyway, don't expect to get 4 days out off a charge on this device. Rom or kernel won't get ya there. Screen is the biggest battery killer, and the hardware has probably half the efficiency of the latest and greatest. S800 pro is double the cores and double the frequency, and uses less battery than this.
You could probably get a days worth of music listening, if the play list is long enough so you don't have to turn the screen on to change tunes
If right now it's a media center only, you'll get more battery life without the radio usage. Please try to test it without the simcard and post your results with an AOSP rom.
Gnex is hardly a media center with its 16gb storage an no sd card slot unless you plan on streaming everything on it.
You want best for WiFi, mp3 playing an good battery life, you should try stock as it has the best battery life compared to any custom rom out there, good luck getting 5 days without charging use out of a gnex even while only just using WiFi an music on it, not even possible with the standard gnex battery.
dude, what you really need is a table like the new nexus 7. Buy the wifi version. Mine lasts about 7,5-8 hours of SOT and about 4-5 days till battery goes to 0%. And that with watching videos, movies, playing music. What you want can be done but no point since gnex is actually a phone and not a media center or a wifi tablet. If you root your nexus 7 tablet and delete some system apps you may get more battery than what I said earlier
I'm just going to wipe and install http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2471380 as it seems to fit my needs the most, then install some root file explorer, and delete the stuff I dont need. I'll try to remember to post back in a few weeks with a battery life update.
Plus, if you want a media center you'll need an extended battery; I'd go for the 2000 one
BTW: What I mentioned on earlier posts was because I'm using my Atrix as a media center and the battery usage reduction after I've not been using the modem on the phone, seem to had a good effect on battery life (I'll try checking on the Gnex, but I'm waiting my 2000MaH batt to come.
I have a 32gb with 2100mAh battery on mine and modded mine to do Qi Charging.
With the radios disabled, I would think you would get quite a few extra hours on it. If you are wanting to convert it into an "iPod Touch" then do just that. PA is fun but I found the best battery using AOKP. I might even attempt to flash MIUI and use it, MIUI has the best Music app IMO. Even the 16gb version is PLENTY of space for tons of MP3s. I have an 8gb iPod Nano and I barely have 4gb on it. It ain't like you can't update the music occasionally. And use Pandora (which is what I mostly do these days).
I would download some sort of Music Player lockscreen (solid black theme) since our AMOLED screens only use power of ON pixels. I would keep the entire theme as black as possible to reduce the screen power consumption. Basically everything would be black and white except the Cover Art.
Also what ever happened to the CM mod that would turn the whole screen into all one shade of 1 color (like green night vision)?
Since you are disabling most of the connections, I would also get a battery saver app that will stop background processes like Google Play and stuff from attempting to fetch updates when on WiFi. I would turn off any type of syncing I could. I would make everything manual, that way you aren't working out, listening to music, and hearing notification tones.
Then I would grab some card games like Uno, Chess, Checkers, Solitare, Word Search, etc for Offline quick plays. Just simple stuff.
Maybe a news agitator that is easy on the pictures or no pictures, just text feeds/articles with a black/white theme so you can manually sync at home before you leave or when you want, and have some good reading on the go.
There are lots of ways to really keep the battery low and use the phone as a media device.
You could also use it in your car with one of those BT Car Computer readers and Torque app. Along with GPS.
Use it as a "Gameboy" by downloading a bunch of emulators on it and either using the onscreen controls or a BT Controller like a Moga.
I literally just did this last week to my retired GNEX. I just put on the newest CyanogenMOD ROM and have in airplane mode with WIFI on, if I tether. Since I don't get WIFI in my gym, and mainly use WIFI when I'm browsing through social media and/or websites while I'm sitting in the sauna, I throw my SG4 into tethering mode and leave in my bag outside of sauna. I used to bring my phone into sauna but i fear the heat is too much.
As far as music, I just load MP3's onto the device like I would with an actual MP3 player. I found this being the easiest way to get music all the time and it saves battery. I've used it at the gym for about a week "5 days" around 2 hours each time, so you figure 10 hours of play back so far. Though I've left my phone on for a total of 1 full day. Sometimes I forget to turn off when I'm down. I haven't charged it yet, I only plugged in to computer right now to take screen shot and transfer.

I'm looking forward to doing this as well as soon as I get my next phone. I think the Galaxy Nexus can still be a useful phone, even if it is a bit old. Bluetooth can't be used while in airplane mode though, right? Can't one just turn off network radios instead so that bluetooth still works? Would love to be able to use the phone as a media player in the car, connected via bluetooth.

Thanks so much man! I guess I've never had reason to try since I've only put it on airplane mode when I'm on a plane or out of the country.
Build a 4.0.4 AOSP rom yourself and use airplane mode? Maybe a custom kernel and some tweaks (governor tweaking etc.), but than your at the limit of battery efficient. Just don't use a google account or turn all the sync off.
Hi All!
So I'm just about to get this phone after a loooong time with my HTC One m7.
I'm not a massive fan of google as a company and their tracking so for my HTC I did the following:
Rooted, installed cyanogen
Installed minimal gapps package
Installed Greenify to hibernate apps I don't use often
Used Privacy guard to limit permissions for apps
I also disabled google play and all sorts of other things.
Now I'm not expecting to install cyanogen on the 5t but what about all the other stuff? Are there better solutions 4 years later?
Ideally I'd like to get the 5t setup similarly to how I had the HTC.
I'd welcome any thoughts from those who know
Thanks!

Because Cyanogen is gone. What was left of it became Lineage OS which is a continuation of Cyanogen, and it has Privacy Guard. Lineage OS for the 5t is currently in beta, but should be working soon.

Also, with battery optimization built into Android now, you probably don't need Greenify.
With Lineage (or any other custom ROM), you can forego Google apps or do a minimal install. Check out your options here: http://opengapps.org/

Thanks, so it sounds like it'll be a similar procedure then.
I'm hot on the trail, I found this page detailing how to remove google from a phone:
https://android.gadgethacks.com/how...-google-from-your-android-experience-0162547/
I didn't realize I could essentially get away with not even installing play store and the article shows some replacement apps for the stock things I use most like calendar, calculator, mail etc.
So I need Lineage if I want privacy guard, however I do see the way android handles permissions has changed:
https://www.howtogeek.com/230683/how-to-manage-app-permissions-on-android-6.0/
Just trying to form a plan of action really, for example on my paid apps (swype and nova launcher) can I simply copy across the apks?
I guess more pertinent questions would be:
Do I need Lineage in order to completely remove google from the phone?
Are there equivalents to privacy guard or are the controls in the stock rom enough?
Will Lineage use the OP features like slider control and camera app?
The stock rom seems pretty snappy and optimised for the device, can I get the benefits of Lineage whilst sticking with the original OS?

Paid apps may depend on Google services for verification.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I didn't think Lineage 15 had Privacy manager in it yet? It is in Lineage 14.1.
As for the OP, as the 5T arrives, you can unlock it, root it, and remove what you don't want. You can disable (or remove) the Google apps, and the OnePlus services, as well as block them from Cell / Wifi connectivity if you wish. You have some of the privacy features that are built into the stock android, but not as fine as the privacy manager that was included in Lineage.
This is why I had hoped Lineage 14.1 would be worked on, it's also the only way we will get an official release right now (Especially with the similarities to the 5 which already has an official release). Unless Lineage 15.1 is close to release? Either way 15.1 is still missing several features from 14.1.
Thanks for this.
i've learnt a bit more since last posting about blobs and shims etc.
What I'm seeing is that there are tradeoffs for ROMs in terms of functionality and features, particularly in relation to the camera.
So like you said, rooting isn't an issue and then I can use titanium to remove google from the phone and replace with alternative apps. This would also give me the chance to access the playstore and copy over my paid apps. I'm not sure how 'completely' I can remove google this way, I assume completely, if there's no account on the phone and no apps then that's it isn't it?
So that looks like plan A for now, although that way I lose the Privacy Guard features I really like.
Plan B would be to go with Lineage to get PG but then I lose the OP camera app. I don't know if you get face unlock, slider control and other handset specific functions with this ROM.
I really like the 'per-permission' approach to Privacy Guard but you seem to lose a lot in the tradeoff.
Thanks again for the input.

There are, but it's getting there. You have to remember it's a new device. The 5T is first device I've bought that did not have official CM / Lineage support (or at least a fully working version) already out at my time of purchase. The only reason I bought it is because I know there will be a version at some point. I bought two 5Ts one for my wife, and one for myself. Mine sat in the box for a few weeks unopened as I really didn't think I would like it without Lineage.
So the Camera, quite frankly Snap in Lineage stinks on all devices. It takes pictures, and functions as a camera, but not a good one. On my Nexus 5X, I have to use a modded Google Camera, on my Wife's and son's old Honor 5X we use Open Camera. Even on the 5T you'll see in some situations some people are getting better pictures out of the modded Google Camera. Even on the OOS, I've been playing around with the Google Camera, and prefer it's pictures in some situations as well. They are still working out some bugs with it, however again a new device, they will get these bugs worked out. We are all still essentially "early adopters".
As for the privacy manager it's gone a little down hill in Lineage. See this Reddit Thread: Link Here.
I posted actual screenshots of the differences here. I posted these in a couple different threads here on XDA, but it didn't go anywhere.
As for what you can do in OOS, it's actually fairly similar to what's now available in Lineage. This is from the 5T in the latest 7.1.1 update:

Same thing, so I blocked Dolphin from being able to Change system settings:
All those pages are available for system apps as well. So if you want to block Play Services, or the Play store from the Internet you can. First thing I did was remove a lot of the Google apps from the phone, as well as the OnePlus stuff. Most of this stuff, I removed with TitaniumBackup, and I just removed it entirely rather than freezing it.
As for FaceUnlock / Slider control, that stuff I'm sure will get figured out. However, we're still just to close to launch, there will be stuff that won't work. Heck we don't even have a selection of brand name cases to choose from and people are wanting fully functional custom roms... Give it time, it will be sorted out.
Again, all valuable info, thanks.
So eventually everything will be sorted out? Is that a reasonable expectation or will there always be things that are 'compromises'?
I see that OP has no intention of releasing the camera 'blob'. I also saw the chinese ROM comes without gapps, maybe that's available somewhere with a language pack?
It's a world I only briefly dipped my toe into when I first did my HTC to get cyanogen so I don't keep up on all the latest news and developments so any and all advice is greatly appreciated. Bit worrying to see the lack of maintenance on PG in Lineage though, that's a red flag for me, basically PG is the only thing keeping it in the mix. From the videos I've seen custom ROMs are slower than stock too.

I think everything will be sorted out. It will take some time. It's still way too close to release date to expect things to be fully ironed out, but things are already moving at a good clip honestly.

This is correct. Unless some mods the camera to work some how in a custom ROM you are out of luck. They already have Google camera partially working, taking better pictures in some instances with OOS and custom ROMs. Yes it still has some issues, like needing a separate app for front and rear cameras. Again it's still early we'll have to give it time. I don't see the OP camera coming to custom ROMs, I see a "third party solution" of some sort being a solution here.

I don't know... You can pretty much remove what you want from OOS as well as block what you want from connecting to data / wifi this would make me happy enough until Lineage gets up and running. Once Lineage is released, as with all their builds, it will be without Gapps.

I agree. To me one of the biggest reasons to run Lineage is the privacy guard. I'm hoping they have just been shifting time and energy to get Lineage 15 ready.

I would disagree with this. Custom roms for me have always been faster and had better battery life. Admittedly I typically run custom kernels as well and spend time tweaking things which can impact battery life. I also tend to strip unnecessary things out of the OS as well. It's just like a PC, if you have a bunch of stuff starting up at bootup and running in the background your performance will be slower. I guess everyone's mileage will vary though.
Thanks, like you said, I guess it's still early days but hopefully we'll get some really comprehensive ROMs with good workarounds (like the googlecam app). I appreciate this is a lot of hard work with a lot of trial and error for the devs.
Looks like rooting and 'optimizing' the stock software is plan A for now. I'll investigate replacements for PG, if there are any.
I'm the same, I always tear a windows install apart, disabling services and optimizing the rest of the OS as needed. I was surprised to see the ROMs performing slower than stock (in terms of opening apps at least) but those were the videos I saw. I expect with time everything will fall in to place and patience is the key for now.
I guess I'm just excited to finally get a new phone after 4 and half years

Btw, I'd be interested in a heads up on the BIB. Again, it's not a world I'm familiar with so if you could point me towards some knowledge it would be appreciated

On most of my current devices I've been using the ElementalX kernel and the EX Kernel Manager. It's what I'm using on my 5T as well, although I'm still tweaking the settings.
This is what I used on my Nexus 5X, Irrelevant for the 5T, but sort of will give you an idea of what I changed, and things I tested?
I know so far on all my devices, including my Nexus 5X (which supported fast charging, OEM charger was a 3 amp charger) my battery always lasted longer on each charge being slow charged (0.35 - 0.5 amp) so this is generally what I charge all my devices at. I haven't even used my "dash charger" yet. Although I guess I should try it for a few cycles and see if the same does apply to this device.
