I don't have my GN2 yet, but below would be good place to start.

But I am quite confused about the methods used here. There is a lot of chat about firmware that my friend doesn't seem to have. All I know he has ics. I.have rooted my HTC sensation, Samsung galaxy s3 and a nexus 7 with no issue. But this stuff makes no sense. Am I even in the right forum?

That seems like too much work. Don't y'all have a stock rooted Odin .tar.md5? And the process for installing recovery seems dated. Once rooted you should be able to install twrp or cwm through room manager or goo manager. Or am I wrong?

then this is your process:
download the rom and gapps to your phone's internal sd card.
2) go to download mode and ODIN this to your phone:

2) reboot
3) clear dalvik,cache,factory data reset
4) Flash CM10 + gapps
DONE
This from the blog is correct btw... long winded but correct and safe. it has more detailed steps if you need itbut all is required are those 4 items above.

I'm an Android noob in general and I just got my Galaxy Note 2. I've been using iOS devices for the past 3 years, so don't laugh if I ask stupid questions.
I want to root my device, but I'm not into flashing ROMs on it, I just want the root. So my Galaxy Note 2 is with Android 4.1.1 and my question is: Should I update to 4.1.2 and root after, or root first and then update to 4.1.2?
Other thing I want to know is: When rooted, will I get thru-the-air updates, like for example the 4.2?
I'm from Europe and I have the international Note 2.
You can do both ways but personaly I updated first and then rooted my international n7100.
If you root first than you will have to download the rom manually (no ota or kies) and then flash it via odin.

When I get to step 2 to boot into Recovery and Flash the SU and BusyBox, I keep getting a signature verification error.
I have download the SU & Busybox ZIP file from the location mentioned in the thread.
CAn anybody please help me / guide me where I can get a ZIP that works?

Use cf auto root. Easiest method available.. Method 2.

You can root and flash custom recovery using Mobile Odin which is available at the Playstore.
Here is the playstore link for Mobile Odin: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.chainfire.mobileodin.pro
(no need for any computer)
Good luck!
Misterjunky,
I lost root after the update. I am completely stock so mobile odin doesn't work... any other suggestions?

If you can go into download mode then you can
use cf-autoroot to re-root the phone.
Be sure to use the correct version of cf-autoroot for your
phone's model.
Here is the direct download link for cf-autoroot for the N900T Tmobile Note 3:
http://download.chainfire.eu/354/CF-Root1/CF-Auto-Root-hltetmo-hltetmo-smn900t.zip?retrieve_file=1
After rooting use "TWRP Coordinator" from the playstore to install TWRP
custom recovery.
Good luck!
I appreciate the help, but download mode would be in correlation with using a computer, correct? I don't have a computer...

I guess there is no solution without using odin and a computer...?

Use my EffortLess guide and just do the first part unless you want to root and install a custom recovery.
