I'm an Android noob in general and I just got my Galaxy Note 2. I've been using iOS devices for the past 3 years, so don't laugh if I ask stupid questions.
I want to root my device, but I'm not into flashing ROMs on it, I just want the root. So my Galaxy Note 2 is with Android 4.1.1 and my question is: Should I update to 4.1.2 and root after, or root first and then update to 4.1.2?
Other thing I want to know is: When rooted, will I get thru-the-air updates, like for example the 4.2?
I'm from Europe and I have the international Note 2.
You can do both ways but personaly I updated first and then rooted my international n7100.
If you root first than you will have to download the rom manually (no ota or kies) and then flash it via odin.

Absolutly the best and savest way is by Toolkit. Just follow the steps exactly.

Trying to figure out the best route. My goal is to root and install roms.
I'm on LJ1 and I'm being asked to update.
A) Install OTA update then Root/install recovery tool kit? (does toolkit work on LJC?)
OR
B) Root/installToolkit firt then manually update to LJC?
root after update

Agreed. I first updated my Note II to LJC, then rooted using the Toolkit.

^ This. Worked like a charm for me after updating stock OTA first.
I updated after rooting. No problems at all!

May I ask how? I try to install my update and it brings me to twrp recovery. Don't know where to go from there.

Galaxy phones are not like HTC or other phones they are not boot loader locked or encrypted . Odin can always flash on it ...

Just updated my brothers Sprint S3 with the new Jellybean update, is it not rootable yet??? I don't have an SIII myself and sometimes you can't tell whether a thread on rooting has been updated yet or not.
It's on official 4.1.1 and it says Qualcomm Secure boot is ENABLED.
Can I get it disabled? and Is there a root method yet without having to flash a rooted ROM in odin?
I simply want to obtain root. Not install cwm or twrp or anything else.
This is Q & A so I am asking a Q and hoping for an A! lol
Yes it's rootable, I just did mine. All the info you need is right here.

I don't know the technical answer to that, but my new phone that I got last week with the latest firmware, I was able to obtain root using that method.

Any version of the Sprint Galaxy S3 can be rooted easily. I used the Team Epic Root From Recovery method. Super easy.

I just got a note 2 and I would like to know what's the best way to root my device without any problems?
If you just got it then I'm going to assume you don't have any important data!
Flash a stock rom with root injected! It's literally a stock touchwiz 4.1.2 rom with superSU. It always doesn't mess up your counter and you can get official OTAs from T-mobile.
The link is here.
What ungraph said. I ran mrRobinson's injected rom for about 7 months before I ended up on tweaked. It works pretty well.
Hastily spouted for your befuddlement

Thanks, silly question. My service provider is Metro PCS even though this is a tmobile phone, will that have any interference with the root?
So no one used Galaxy Note2 TOOLKIT V4.1.0 to root their android? I used this to root my S3.

Be sure to read all step and choose the good option for your phone. I choose recommend options except for the recovery I choose the cwm instead of twrp.

KINGO Android Root
I just found an app that supposedly will ROOT any Android phone. It is called KINGO Android Root.
FYI - Just completed my Root and it took ~ 3 minutes. I know it is rooted since I can now use Titanium Backup Pro.
I have a note 2 I am running 4.4.2 Probam and love it. I just bought another note 2 for my wife and its 4.1.2. I plan on rooting but probably no custom ROMs. Just debloating on my own. Should I update to 4.3 or stay at where I am?
I have never updated my bootloader and use 4.3 touchwiz ROMs fine with devil kernel. What's my best move from some expertise experience. Not a nooby but not a developer. Thanks

It honestly depends on ur plans for that phone. If u never plan on rooting it I would definitely update to 4.3 using the ota. But that's just a personal opinion. If ur planning on rooting I wouldn't update to 4.3 using the ATT ota. If u update to ota 4.3 anytime u use odin it will trip the Knox counter. And then chance for a warranty replacement if u need it is slim to none. If ur planning on rooting there a a few really solid TW 4.3 roms out there with no worries about Knox.

4.1.2 is solid. Since it's your wife's phone, personal experience allows me to say leave it be. Lord help me if Candy Crush doesn't work.....
But you have an option.
A time saver to get to 4.3 and rooted on your current bootloader would be this.,,

AT&T UCUBMK6 i317 *Odexed* Stock ODIN Note 2
It's already rooted, all you have to do is debloat with Titanium BU or whatever.
From the thread -----> If you *are not* running Official 4.3 (MK6) or newer bootloader: After flashing one of the firmware packages above (the Stock ODIN) flash the bootloader package below in Odin to get wifi working (sorry, no option available for CWM/TWRP). I've included the Odin executable just after if needed.
Bootloader needs to be flashed only once. See post #2 for information on how to check what version of bootloader you have installed.
This is what you will flash:
AT&T i317 ODIN 4.3 UCUBMJ4 (Leak) Bootloader & TZ (AT&T Note 2 ONLY)
This bootloader will not trip Knox.
Thanks. Not worried about warranties. I rooted it at 4.1.2. I'd I update OTA to 4.3 am I still able to put a custom recovery on it? Kinda confused if the 4.3 update locks the bootloader and lastly wasn't the at&t s4 bootloader able to be unlocked when it first came out? Soon after a OTA broke the root. If so then why wouldn't a brand new one out of box be able to have bootloader unlocked just as the phones come with the same firmware version and not updated until bought. Just wondering.

Check this here, it should answer your questions.
I am not too sure about the S4.
I recently got a refurbished Note 2 that came with the 4.3 firmware (my original note 2 broke), MK6 booloader. According to this link, If your phone is running the MK6 bootloader, It is not possible AS OF NOW to revert to the previous bootloader MJ4. You can put CWM recovery and custom roms on your 4.3 build but I don't think they are too stable as of now. I have not tried it yet.
I have at&t note 2 and never updated to 4.3 like I said before but when I flashed a 4.3 tw ROM WiFi wouldnt work like you said. Instead of doing the Odin bootloader thing I just flashed the devel kernel and everything went good. WiFi works flawless. Devil kernel works on toichwiz and aosp. My question is would it be better to do that and leave the bootloader alone?

The note 2 I got last Friday is 4.1.2. The only reason I didn't get the note 3 is this whole bootloader crap. T-Mobile is really starting to look good from here

To not confuse. I have had my note 2. Just got my wife the other one. I don't think I am going to update it at all. Just to make sure I rooted hers with framaroot and stopped any ota 4.3 from slipping by.

One last question. Not sure if we already touched this or not. On your at&t 4.3 note 2 can you put a custom recovery cwm?

How did you flash the devils kernel ? ODIN ?
And the answer is yes you can.
Hi,
Can anyone help me recover phone and my data, Samsung note 4 verizon, struck while trying to root. It is now at boot screen saying "verizon software repair assistant".
Sry but can't save the data on it now. Did you read before you tried to root it. There is no permanent root for the retail verizon note 4. Was your sytem on KK ot LP? If it was updated through kies or OTA then you can NOT roll back or even try to flah or root thr phone.
