Thought my NFC chip failed on me, cm10/codename/stock rooted all wouldn't let me use NFC. Took my phone to Sprint local store, dropped it off and 2 hours later was told I need to go TEP route and was provided a tiny business card to contact asurion.
Called sprint later the same night, dude didn't even know what NFC was. Transferred me to a tech that night never answered.
Through xda, a member advised the NFC chip is in the battery. I switched my battery back to stock, and shocker, NFC was again fully functional. Really Sprint? Do you not know your product well enough to know this?

Thats pretty sad on sprints part.
Well also pretty sad you didn't see it on the battery.

And they wonder why their reps have reputation of being extremely incompetent.
The nfc chip is not in the battery. That would imply that every phone is capable of nfc with the correct battery. The nfc chip is in the phone, however, in order for it to work, it needs the antenna which is rather too large to put in the phone, takes up too much surface space. Thus, they use the battery as the location for this nfc antenna.

There are a lot of "techs" who know absolutely nothing about how the phones actually work. They were just taught how to repair them by the book and don't actually think outside of the box.
THEY SELL THE PHONE AND DON'T KNOW WHAT NFC IS?! WHAT A JOKE. Why do they hire these incompetent tech support people that know nothing of phones?

This wouldnt even be an asurion claim in the first place....did the phone have obvious signs of physical damage?
Where you at a corp store or authorized retailer?
My techs are frigging awesome....but there are limitations to what they are allowed to do, and only as good as the training they receive.

Techs do not sell phones...or anything for that matter. They make repairs.
More and more its my belief that carriers are going the route of phone swaps though...and sending the phones somewhere in bulk to be refurbed. In the long run I could see how that would be cheaper.
Hearing NFC is still in the battery is news to me as well. I was of the understanding that after the skyrocket samsung moved everything to the back cover...go figure.
And I spend hours with this stuff lol

Nope, only had it one week and is in perfect condition. And it was a corporate store, i dont go to retailers. I checked the stock battery and it does say near field communication enabled on it. So again, battery may not be where the chip resides but it does enable the feature if the battery allows it to.
The tech was one thing, all he did was wipe my phone and then reboot it. Worse was the phone rep that didn't even know what NFC was until I described it (he was still wary about it through the call saying 'try that option again, not even knowing how I was trying it out).

Ohhhhhh ok you CALLED tech support...my bad. I thought you took the phone in to a repair center. Sounds lume you did both? I know there isnt much out yet on the S3..pretty sure tear down info isnt even out there yet.
It still throws me off that someone would tell you to use insurance in a store. Within 14 days they typically swap out the phone with a new one. After 14 days they should have just ordered a new one.
1. From what I have heard call center stuff is farmed out. I hate that.
2. Seems kind of silly to me to expect resolution to a hardware issue over a phone call (just in general, not directed at you)
And yeah after reading a few articles It sucks to find that since my galaxy note on att I have been misinformed...the chip itself still resides in the battery and the antenna is on the back cover I guess

Its Sprint employees like that that make the good ones have a bad name. I have been a Sprint employee (Store manager @ Preferred Retailer ASC) for over 3 years. I have watched other locations in my region fall by the wayside and have been nearly shocked in every way imaginable from some of the "help" or "suggestions" i have heard. I can say from an employee whos store location has managed a 90% CSAT average for over two years that not all are as "smart" as the one you encountered. I am sure you are aware of that but it truly upsets me to hear of some wannabe, fake technician simply trying to pass the buck with the "good ol' hard reset will fix ANYTHING" option......k done with my rant....thanks for listening.

I did both, during the day at work I brought my phone into a retail store and left it there for 2 hours. Later that night, I called in and received the "huh" service. To sprints credit, they were very helpful an my epic touch phone issues. But I was also shocked that the guy at the store suggested asurion instead of ordering me a new phone, seeing as mine was only a week old with no damage signs.

More loveliness for this topic.
So I ordered a replacement phone as sprint suggested the night I posted this. After I found how to fix the issue, I called sprint and a rep told me "just send the new phone back and you will be ok, they will accept the phone and you wont be charged."
Received phone, returned it in the postage paid envelope.
Last friday (2 days ago), I dropped the same original phone and the screen shattered. I placed a claim with asurion and was advised due to having 3 claims in a year they are cutting me off (dropped my, epic touch aniut 2 months before getting this one). Now asurion has 300 from me, I am getting my replacement tomorrow, but they do not want to invalidate my prior claim. The guy on the phone said they have to honor all claims and sent me to a sups voicemail. I call sprint and tell them this was a result of bad advice from their store and call center and am advised to call Asurion again. Wow. Wtf.

Funny thing was I also reverted back to stock for the rep before I gave the phone (stock rooted). Regardless, if our a tech and should know about your phones, wouldn't step one be check the battery to see if it says NFC enabled? I could see if you can't get it to work after that, but...you're a tech. Doesn't help that the guy I talked to on the phone didn't even know what NFC was.

Probly true....and I know a thing or two about fixing things....but before u just use easy out to call insurance wouldn't a better customer service aspect be "i don't know, check around as I am not familiar with the issue" or "i called Samsung and the said..." as opposed to "dunno, get a new phone"?

I just had the best conversation ever with a sprint rep. This was an in-store tech person, mind you, so all of my facial expressions were more than obvious.
The conversation went like this:
Hi, my E4GT is having some wifi connectivity issues. When I try to connect, it says connected but then keeps scanning, and in fact, it's not connected at all because I can't get a webpage to...
(Interrupting me) WAIT RIGHT THERE...let me see the front of your phone, turn it around! (I do so.) Yup, that's the problem...you downloaded something to make your ANDROID phone look like a WINDOWS phone.
You mean a launcher?
Yes, it's an unapproved app, and you corrupted your whole system. You need to delete that and hard reset. Don't make it look like it's not an Android phone...otherwise you corrupt the system.
(My face has a wtf are you serious look on it at this point.) Oooooh-kay. Um, are you sure?
YES! ABSOLUTELY! Also, I bet you have checked off install apps from unknown sources, don't you?
Yes...so?
THERE YOU GO AGAIN --- COMPLETELY CORRUPTED YOUR ENTIRE SYSTEM. Now, anyone anywhere can just go into your phone and access everything. That's why you can't get online.
(Now my face has the wtf look on it as well as a little bit of anger from this rep having somehow survived this long in her life, and in doing so, disproved darwinism.) So, you're telling me installing the amazon appstore breaks our phones?
YES, it's an unapproved app, just like that one that made your phone look like a windows phone!
But, that app's from the google market...??
I BET YOU'RE TETHERING TOO, AREN'T YOU?
(Damn, she got me there.) No! What is tethering?
Someone will come up and tell you to tether...go right ahead and do it if you want, but you'll be corrupting your entire phone again and it won't work.
Ok, thanks, this has been a big help.
You bet! Thanks for coming in!

I once had a verizon droid incredible with a screen that literally moved when you touched it (this screen hardware itself physically moved, not anything on the screen). Took it into a Verizon store and the rep seriously asked me "did you try doing a battery pull?" I was just like wtf does a loose screen have to do with a battery pull.
I don't know where they find these people. When I apply for jobs there I never even get an interview, I think I fail their personality testing during the application.
I don't even understand how people like that can get hired. You would think they would require at least some basic knowledge of the industry and products. I am actually looking to change careers and would like to get a position managing a sprint store but I can't seem to find an opening in my area because they keep hiring people like this. I have been to four stores in my area and every single one has not one person who seems to know much of anything. Maybe its just the central florida area.

Normally, I would say this story seems too far out there, and that there is no way someone is that clueless as an employee at the Sprint store.
However, I have dealt with some of the Sprint store employees and I guess it is feasible.
Either way, thanks for posting as it was an entertaining post.
Thanks op that was classic, I seem to run into these people all the time. Awesome
I had a similar thing happen at Radio Shack. I had bought the Photon there and before my 30 days were up I wanted to trade it for our SII...on launch day they didn't have any so I told them I wanted to return it and go to Sprint to get the phone. The salesman said why...the Photon is dual core and a much better phone...I immediately told him it was none of his business and then proceeded to rattle off the specs of the SII..he went into the back room. These people are clueless!
Haha I purchased an app called HVAC Buddy for work and a sprint tech told me it broke the gps in my Moment. Wtf

All of FL, bro...I'm in the ft laud area myself, and it's harder to find a glimmer of intelligence in the general population than it is to find a guy who doesn't shave his chest here.
anyway, just fyi, it's an absolutely true story. the worst part, which I forgot to mention in the OP, is that a couple minutes before this dolt began "helping" me, I was talking with another customer who had an E4GT with some crazy problems (phone with a mind of it's own...would just randomly open up apps and close them and restart...) and I was telling her about this forum and how her problems were atypical and how she should just get a new E4GT...and then every time this stupid, stupid customer service rep talked, I had to just look over at this lady and hope she knew how completely retarded the rep was.

No need to apologize on their behalf...it's the same at every job and every profession. It's just a shame that people don't say, "sorry, I don't know," when they don't know. But, on the bright side, it does sometimes make for some funny ish when they talk out their ass
Walked into my local repair center and showed the Guy my OG Evo, told him that I was having some issues with the fact that my $400+ phone had a crack in the casing near the volume and power buttons. He immediately told me "you dropped your phone and it cracked. that's not covered sorry." and proceeded to the next customer. I walked up, showed him again my phone was in an otterbox defender case, had NO signs of damage... mind you I kept the case on since day 1 and I had never dropped the phone....
He looks at me with the straightest face and says "it is because you are using a Facebook IM application which causes the problem." at this point I laughed in his face, left the store and proceeded down the block to the next repair center.
This Guy still works there....

Well i went back to stock (at least tried to) for the preperation of ICS and the maintenance update. That was a disaster. I have had over 25 android phones but i guess i thought it would be a good idea to check re-partition in ODIN cause i thought it would be an *extra good* flash. Ya now i have a FULL brick. Before i tried to reboot download mode, it said PARTTABLE missing or something like that. And yes it was a full brick there was nothing i could do.
Whats even BETTER is that TMOBILE told me to shove it! "Oh this phone is not part of our replacement program." WTF. So they directed me to call Samsung which i did and it is now on it's way there. Since when does a phone i bought on the account less than six months ago not qualify for an exchange. Bastards. Well hopefully Samsung fixes it in a timely fashion and sends it back!
My wife recently broke her screen on her GS2 and they replaced it...
Geeze man, that's a major screw up. It's posted everywhere not to check repartition. and tmo has been replacing these phones for people.

For future reference you cannot and should not ever check re-partition with out a valid PIT file. It will always result in a brick otherwise.

That's funny, we've had the reverse experience.
The T-Mobile store people have frequently lied to us. When we signed up during their Valentine's Day deal they lied about the plan requirements, they lied about transferring our old phone numbers to T-Mobile that day, they told us we could downgrade from unlimited talk and 5GB data in two weeks, then two weeks later they said we couldn't.
In the end we just called T-Mobile CS the next day who transferred our numbers and changed our phone plans with no fuss at all. Now we never bother dealing with the T-Mobile store in person, my girlfriend gets pissed off just thinking about them.

Long story, but I switched to Sprint from Verizon back in March after ten years. I purchased the White Epic Touch and sure enough my problems began. I had the phone 28 days and my screen goes out. Bam 35.00 for a refurb. I have that phone for 3 months and take ICS update. Everytime I plugged it to the charger my phone would overheat. Bam 35.00 fee for the tech to do factory reset and have the same problems when I left. I woke up two weeks ago to a black screen. No response. Bam 35.00 and they sent me a new one. I woke up today with a dim screen and find out my screen is burning out so these idiots try to charge me another 35.00 and I said no way! So after arguing with Sprint for about 4 hours they finally replace it then kindly say the phone is on backorder and it could be up to 30 days to receive it. I ask if they have any black ones in stock and they basically tell me im screwed until my name pops up om the list and a phone becomes available. I dunno, but this old boys about to take his 4 lines back to Verizon. More expensive and less hassle. Sprint is so lacking I never imagined. I knew there network was bad, but figured they made up for it elsewhere. Guess not! I figured up that since march I have spent around 21 hours in the Sprint store. I also figure that all those fees had I known I could have sold this one added that amount to what I have gave Sprint for a Gs3. Sad

Yeah but what is your purpose? We all know how customer service experiences are. Some are bad some are good.
Are you looking for some help or using custom roms and see if some of your issues can be fixed that way? I just don't see the reason behind you ranting on a development forum. I can see this in sprint community forums. Thats all.
Edit: And I am a BIG believer in never switching providers when something is working just fine with original provider. I work in fios tech support and whenever someone tells me that everything was working fine before switching and I hate your service... I always think in my mind.. Why the hell did you switch? Save 10-15 bucks vs the peace of mind of working service? Not worth it.

I'm a tech at Sprint and I think its kinda funny that every phone that you received craps out. I would say get TEP then you don't have to pay $35 for these issues. Don't rant about how Sprint is crap when you do not take advantage of all of your options.
Verizon does not offer on-site technicians . They would simply tell you buy another phone full price or go to asurion and pay a &150 deductible

Well onley thing is I had one phone in 10 years mess up and they did replace it free of charge. I do have a question for you since you work for Sprint. Ive noticed everytime I go in there all the people in this store always have the latest phone. When I baught the Epic they had it. Evo LTE came out they had it. Now I noticed all three of the same people at this store carry an S3. Went by there today and two of them was showing off there Iphone 5 to customers. This is a contract store not corp. It just irritated me when the rep talked about Sprints cost going up because of exchanges on bad phones. There could be but I highly doupht these people are making enough money to buy the new phones every month. Just curious

Sprint does not manufacture the phones , Samsung does. However that's why we have good technicians who check for liquid damage, because if we don't we send them off to get refurbished and we endup giving a liquid damaged device to someone else.
That being said that's why its good to be honest if you liquid damaged a device. But people would rather lie and hope a tech just replaces it , and screw sprint and other customers just so they can get something for free.

I don't work for sprint but I used to work for cingular wireless and afaik the store always wanted us to carry the latest devices so we could 'demo' them to the customers... think of it as eyecandy.
In fact, I had my own phone from sprint and another device from CW, I was not allowed to use my sprint device for obvious reasons but had to have whichever device from CW visible and sometimes using a BT headset for demo purposes. If I can recall correctly, those devices were written off once another one came up.

I got 2 Epics last year in Oct, his and hers and had only one hicup in 11months, when the ICS update rolled out the wife wanted to try it, so she accepted the update and it did not go well, horrible battery life, apps not working weird charge cycles and a bunch of other fowleups, later I tried a couple of custom roms, but that was just a bandaid , phone was not a daily driver. Finally went back to gingerbread, the os that kept the phone reliable for 10+months with no issues what so ever. I had tried a couple of ICS releases myself and always wound up going back to gingerbread, needing a reliable phone on a daily basis I could not afford to leave home with a quirky phone that needs a charge every 6 hrs. I settled into a custom gb Rom that I have been running since April with no problems what so ever, wifeys Epic is on the same custom Rom. The only time we ever went back to sprint was to pickup a desk dock for the Epics.
Corporate sprint stores are usually more user freindly than privately owned stores, and I think if you go to a Corp store and plead your case in a nice manner you may get some satisfaction. The new phones the employees flash are just perks of the job, either huge discounts or free, don't let that get to you, besides it makes sprint look good. I have been with sprint since 2000 and have no complaints.
Give sprint another chance to make good. Good luck.

Just my 2 cents. I got the Original Epic on launch day and never had one problem with it. Got the Epic Touch on launch day and am still using it. I have not had one problem with it. With anything mechanical there is always going to be the possibility of failure. It is just a game of chance. I can guarantee you that there are people saying the exact same thing about Verizon, AT&T and TMobile. It just happens.

I know how technical support goes... I did both tier 1 and tier 2 for U-Verse. And it's actually 95% of customers are not tech savvy so they call in for every single issue including a Wi-Fi password. Tier 1 technical support is basically a power cycle then transfer to tier 2 if the issue is still happening. Tier 2 does ALL the REAL technical support. Tier 1 is just a filter, which can't even do that correctly most of the time.

FiOS is a fiber optic network similar to U-verse in the sense that you support IPTV, HSIA, and CVoIP.
I know how an ONT works, unless there is a major issue that requires a technician to physically repair the line... it is a simple toggle or reboot of the CPE.

Yes, sprint does suck, I've known more than any sprint tech or rep and they don't generally fix anything, water damage??? Seriously? Who cares if it's been water damaged, doesn't mean the phone won't work, that's why they have quality control refurb people... Yeah, I'm on sprint and I hate every day of it but ALL cell phone providers suck major ass and have you by the balls... I've been paying for 4g for over two years and have NEVER seen it and probably never will until my contract is up, again... Truth be told by the time I and the other 75% of America do see 4g from sprint, they'll put a cap on it and stop unlimited... If I were you and you don't like sprint, just keep going up through the chain and tell people strait up what's going on. If that's a no go, just change your prl and roam constantly until you get that "letter" in the mail... One rant to another, good luck...

Hey everyone.
Need personal opinions as I cannot decide for myself -.-
Recently got a warranty replacement device from T-Mobile.
It's a refurb.. -.-
My old one had a weird smudge in all camera apps as well as in the picture. Really annoying.
Well I got my refurb, it's got it's issues, 3 "ink" spots on the screen, my original had zero! I cannot undervolt by more than 25mA. My original could under volt by 150 across the board. The refurb gets very hot (approximately 100 degrees Fahrenheit with normal use) my original hardly ever broke 90. And my battery life is freaking **** with this new device. (I'm guessing heat is the issue here)
I'm really ****ing upset. Excuse my language..
The decision I cannot make is this.
Do I request T-Mobile to ship my original device back to me(it's still in transit just dropped it off today), and either 1 deal with the camera smudge, or 2 take apart both devices and swap the camera modules?
I looked all over YouTube, I cannot find anyone saying there is a warranty sticker covering any screws.
Does anyone know if they can tell if the device was disassembled? I have professional tools so I won't leave markings behind.
Simply put, I hate this "new" device.
I don't understand why companies give refurbished devices for warranty when I am paying full price for a brand new device that should last at least a year. It's not my fault something happened that was out of my control..
Thanks for putting up with my rant lol.

Wow, that's though. I send in my Device to samsung for a fix, and they fixed it with a "replaced PBA" comment, but I saw some people say they just send another one. Hopefully it's not a refurbished. I doubt they will be able to cancel the shipping, but if they an, most definitely swap the camera modules. Having those problems on the refurbished sucks. I could have fixed mine but I sent it in hoping Id get another one which didn't die after 2.5Hrs screen on time and 12 hours running time. Switch out the cameras if possible. I myself, if I get a bad one on saturday, I'll hate my descision but Im going to go for the 16GB nexus 4. Hate the limited storage and the on screen buttons that get in the way, but heck I'm not going to live 2 years with a faulty device

I can understand your frustration With my experience working foe Tmobile and having done countless warranty exchanges since the my touch, they will not return your original device. Unless you cannsomehowncontact ups and have them stop transit and send it back and return the one they sent you. You should contact tkobile again and tell them what happened. Afaik they will not return it back to you. When it gets to their processing center it'll get factory reset, processed and possibly put back up as a refurb if it passes all their tests. You do have the option of requesting another warranty exchange, possibly going to retention this time or a higher tier of tech support.

Thanks for the reply. I was wishing to talk to someone who works for them. I really hate the newer one they sent me. No matter what ROM, kernel, modem it lasts at most about 8 hours 2 hours screen on time. And the phone gets almost too hot to hold . If I didn't have an otter box, i prolly wouldn't be able to hold it. And the worst part is is the freaking screen spots. I get its a known issue with the super amoled but Christ the phones not been released even a year! Not to mention the o e I paid full price for was/is flawless despite the camera smudge.

I'd do that too. With the sgs2 I went through five warranty exchanges. They wouldn't offer me anything else because apparently it was the best phone they had even though they had the presale of the sgs3 going on when this happened. That's what drove me to sell it and buy a gnex. Long story short in back here.

I know it doesn't help your current situation, but for your next phone I suggest you check out Square Trade. They actually treat you right & are fair and honest. Only thing is they don't cover theft. I took my phone to an official samsung showcase booth (literally a huge one) at the mall today. I asked a guy if his note 2 creaks because mine does very much. He took off the back cover and put it face down on the table, reapplied the back cover by pressing it on the table and slid the phone around in the process, and gave me back a screen full of scratches. He said "Nah, that wasn't me. The phone has gorilla glass." and walked away.
I call AT&T to attempt a warranty replacement because of poor build quality. They tell me that it's a sign of physical damage and I no longer have any warranty at all because of it.
So now I have a scratched note 2 that was once spotless and a crappy carrier that won't replace it because of Samsung's poor quality control.

Seriously though, I'd be pissed. Id say 90 percent of the people that work in stores like that don't know anything about the products they are even selling. That's why I hate going there. They talk to you like your a child, meanwhile I know more about the stuff that they make a living selling. Blows my mind.

Did he have little tungsten shards on the table while he was doing that? I wasn't able to scratch my screen with a dinner fork.
Get your screen wet and scrub it real good, you might just have residue from whatever was on the table on there.
He had "brushed off" the table pretty roughly beforehand. I couldn't quite identify fine grains, but I know for a fact something was on the table. I'm a phone freak. I've never dropped or scratched a single phone because I intend on reselling them. The scratches he left are "twist" shaped or "ribbonlike" which directly relate to the sliding and twisting/panning motion he rotated the phone on while it was on the table.
Does anyone know who at samsung I should email? I don't think general support would read or bother working on a resolution to this issue..

And tell them the phone keeps turning off on you or something. And they should send it thru some trouble shooting and may just replace it for you. But make sure you tell them that you really need a new 1. That's how I get mine replaced if I run into a problem..
But noticing that someone told you that your warranty was void. Not sure if they told you that at a store? But you were referring to a rep & a Mgr, so I'm sure you were at a AT&T store! Anyway if they didn't enter nothing in the computer about your phone and you have insurance on it you can get it exchanged at the service center. I've even taken a phone there that was messed up from flashing a bad Rom!

seriously, I would file a police report. Sometimes you can do it online and it gives you more credibility.
I was told that my warranty was void by AT&Ts warranties department, as well as Samsung when I was connected to them by the rep.
I hung up and called again to repeat the process and the next rep said my warranty was void as well due to user damage.
I may just file a police report...

Wow that's crazy there. And you said that the Manager did this. Was it a corporate store? You know that makes the difference. When getting something taken care of. Personally I only deal with the Manager's when I'm doing anything in the AT&T store. I've even gotten a few rep fired for messing around with our account. Because we get a 50% discount on accessories. lol
I hope you get your problem fixed soon. Cause if it was me someone would be getting fired for carelessness. And me getting a new phone. Sometimes you have to go above& beyond. Meaning contacting corporate.. An e-mail goes a long way. To the right person.
Also you were mentioning, screen protectors. I use these and there absolutely Crystal clear!

If you hang around these forums often enough, you'll realize that there is a cult of users here that believe that using a screen protector is for the devil... Or some sheet.
Edit:
I also use the same as banjanman as well. I like them a lot, comparable to Real Look. And they have an offer going that if you leave a review on Amazon, then follow their instructions to tell them that you did so, you get another pack of 3 for free.
So, 6 sps for $10.. Not bad.
Not a store but done over the phone. The warranty rep spoke to a supervisor who gave him this answer, and he said that the store would do the same thing since it's been 2 months and not within 14 days. I got this repeated to me by two reps on two phone calls.
Thanks for the tip on those screen protectors, I'm about to order them myself to cover up the scratch and put one on the replacement if I ever end up getting one.

Well, my hope is that they didn't make a note on the account about the issue. So that maybe you can use the "my phone is messing up and I need a new one" story. But the probability is not in your favor.
Every time I call they ask me to hold so they can take notes for the account. So If I have to, I go to my local AT&T... Which is full of ex-walmart employees.
I don't advise it, but I've seen some intentionally brick their phones and blame it on the software update. High risk factor though.
Are you saying that this incident with the damage happened 2 months ago??
The incident happened today, a few hours ago. I meant that I've owned the phone for 2 months (and I had creaks since day 1), and I should have swapped it out for creaks within the 14 day 'buyer remorse period' according to the rep.
