[Off Topic] I trust this communities opinion on this.... - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

So I have went to the pages where this is more directed to but I want an unbiased opinion and who else should I ask.... YOU GUYS! I've had my epic 4g touch for a while now and am thinking of getting a tablet of some sort. I've watched damn near every review video on The asus TF700, samsung galaxy note 10.1, sony xphia s, yada yada yada.. I basically want to know which 9-10 inch tablet you would get and why. Anything to help me not go crazy... cause right now Im on the verge... The asus has a lot of quality issues, but has the best display, the note is just not what I need as far as stylus and productivity goes... I just want a good media consumption device that is good quality, fast, good picture and will last. future proof if you will. Any help is much appreciated.
So on that note... what do you guys think about the sony xperia tablet S?

From what I've heard, the best 9-10 inch tablet is the Asus TF Infinity which is the TF700.
I've heard that the note is plagued with issues but I've never heard of the TF700 having them. I know the TF201 has issues with Wifi and GPS but not the TF700 that I know of...

I got an acer iconia a500, yeah, its a bit older now but just about every port you could want is on it, its easy to root, and its a workhorse, got mine on craigslist in the box for $180

I would go with the tf700 infinity, even though I took mine back after wanting to upgrade from my Nexus 7. I don't understand how people use such a big tablet I have a laptop for everything my tablet won't do. Anyway its a great tablet though and it's getting Jelly Bean like right now, and it's pretty much stock Android no touchwiz or anything if you prefer straight up Android. I just researched this all and the infinity came out on top for me, or you could wait till the holidays and see what comes out. But that's you can always say that with tech.

I have the galaxy tab 2 and of i would buy another it would be the asus everyone else is talking about. Grant it i love my gt but it lags here and there and just little hiccups.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda app-developers app

I appreciate your input guys, I also was interested in the asus TF700 but have heard there are some quality issues... maybe you can confirm. I have heard there is a problem with some of the sceens becoming un-flush and squeaking in some spots, coming loose or something, light bleeding, dust getting under them, there is one review from mobiletech on youtube comparing the asus TF700 and the samsung galaxy note 10.1 and the asus all of a sudden got some lines through the middle of the screen right through the photo she was showing. And its was about 2-3 months old. So my worry is after time or after the warranty is up, something like that will happen and i'll be F'd.
So on that note... what do you guys think about the sony xperia tablet S?

Media consumption, fast reliable I only can think of Asus Nexus 7 its 7" but what the hell...

Crazy as it may sound, I'm waiting to see how windows 8 tablets turn out. If I can slap a keyboard on a tablet and run ms office, I'm sold.
Otherwise, the a500 due to the price and rom availability.

Dude. It's an amazing experience. Been fortunate enough to have a couple different windows 8 slates and a surface in my possession for a couple weeks now. Seriously freaking awesome. I've been an android guy for years but do not think I will buy another android tablet (phones are another story, will not switch for the foreseeable future) after rocking this windows setup.
My fav thing to do with the more powerful slates is to install steam on them, load up all my games, then plug in an xbox controller and play games on an airplane... Boredom = never now.

My thoughts on Android VS iOS

So i'll make this short and sweet:
the Galaxy nexus beats the heck out of the iPhone.
the iPad beats the heck out of the Galaxy tab 10.1 (by a mile)
I'm done
Having owned every iteration of the iPhone and iPad, currently owning a Galaxy Nexus and Galaxy Tab 10.1...I'd have to agree. I freaking love my Galaxy Tab 10.1, but the new iPad blows it out of the water. Then again, I'd say it's pretty on-par with the iPad 2.
My apple friend tried to blow me out saying the iPad 3 hd or what ever the hell its called is better than my transformer prime I disagree lol. The newest thing always has the best specs. But since there's rumors of Android phones with better specs then there tablet I'm not to worried

the ipad 1 blows it out of the water on simple things like scrolling...why can thte damn thing work in portrait mode it annoys the heck out of me!!! (for those who dont know it lags in portrait mode)
BTW: the GNEX does that too except in landscape mode
try swiping through the launcher in landscape mode...wayyyyy laggier.
Nexus and prime killing everything. Period!
Sent from my Transformer Prime TF201 using xda premium
I have to completely agree. iPhone is too simple and locked down to use as a phone. I love the customization, fluidity, and overall form-factor of my Gnex, but Apple blows everyone out of the water when it comes to laptops and tablets. I just bought my a new 15" Macbook Pro a few months ago, and I can't think about going back to any other manufacturer. iPad 2 and 3 are ideal tablets as well.
for the people saying the prime blows the ipad out of the water...it does....at 1 thing...gaming.
other than that the ipad is still smoother and just a better experience...there is a reason android tablets dont sell at all...if google can make jelly bean really great for tablets then i will go out and buy the first one. until then..the iPad is still better IMO
BTW: i'm talking about stock experiences here...overcome/task's rom on the galaxy tab 10.1 is as smooth as the ipad.

No, they sell good on great PR and profiling.
People quoting specs need to understand that it's not just about specs. Yes, it's important to have good hardware, but it's even more important to have good software running on top of it.
I'm not saying Android is bad on tablets, but I think iOS is still miles ahead when it comes to general user experience. Also a lot of the iOS apps designed for iPad are truly amazing, making it a pleasure to use the device.
I will never go back to iPhone unless something drastic happens to iOS, however I am planning on getting the new iPad rather than an Android tablet, as long as it can be jailbroken.
iOS is only so stable and smooth because not much has been changing under the cover. Its a stagnant OS being released one one type of hardware. If they were trying to release on all type of different chip sets and SOCs they'd have the instability and fragmentation that we see today in Android, but focusing on such feature (stability, making sure everything works on everything) causes stagnation, which is what is happening on iOS. They aren't bringing anything new to the table.

I don't see the fascination with apple laptops or desktops, no software works with them so you have to buy Mac editions at a hugely inflated price, they look nice but are twice the price of a PC with similar specs, but if you read t3 or stuff magazine everything apple make is number 1 in their top 10 list! And before anyone says it I know you can run a windows emulator on them but that's hardly an ideal solution!!

iOS is just so polished on a Macbook. Multitasking is amazing thanks to finger gestures. Mission control (best thing ever invented, 3 finger swipe up) and dashboard make life so much easier. I'm able to go from program to program with no hesitation. The apps made for iOS really integrate well (safari with gesutres) and the mail app and iCal rule... programs really aren't more expensive for a Mac and yes you pay a price but for good hardware. Apple started putting i7s in their line of laptops before most.

You guys need to understand if a device meets someone needs then its good for them period. For one I had played with my friends iPad 2 and the device feels like I can break it by touching it though I will say I like the keyboard better. I have a HP touchpad and after I put cm9 on it oh boy that thing is great love it and yes I played with the iPad for 2 hours got bored of it. But if people enjoy the iPad more power to them I just don't and customization is a must in a device like that.

Agreed 110%. Apple limits EVERYTHING. You can only run Apple/Mac software on Apple/Mac products and their are few iterations. Look at the Iphone. In the years they have been making them, how many different versions are out there? Iphone (2G), 3G, 3GS, 4, 4S. 5 different versions. Of those 5 versions, how many radically redefined handsets have we seen? NONE. The biggest shift was the 3GS to 4 and it was a downgrade in size.
Same for IPads. By keeping their offering across the board extremely limited, keeping their software proprietary to these limited number of devices, keeping the IOS limited to the bare essentials (no bells and whistles), they produce stable, easy to use devices.
If you only want to make calls, browse the web a little, check your E-mail, don't mind taking out a mortgage extension to buy the device and every single app you download (every free app I've downloaded turns out to be a trial that expires after the first level), then get an Iphone. Same for the Ipads. Want it to work with extremely limited customization, then its for you.
Android is open source. Its running on hundreds of different devices with varying specs. Windows operating system is built to run on just about any computer. I personally don't see myself choosing restrictions over freedom any time soon.
My neighbors are in their 60's. They just want it to work and don't get into anything technical. They own 2 Iphones, 2 Ipads, and about 3 Macs. They tell me how wonderful the Macs are because hardware works instantly (no driver downloads). Apple products really are perfect for them.
Just my 2 cent.

I'm with the OP. Love my Galaxy Nexus and no way I would trade it for an iPhone.
But I like the iPad 2 from work more than my Galaxy Tab 10.1.
That's mostly Samsungs fault for making less than stellar ROMs (performance wise) and Tegra 2s fault. I can't change the poor multimedia performance of the Tegra 2 driver but I have high hopes to ban Samsung software from my tablet with a stable CM9 ROM. The "snapshot" looks promising.

[Q] Tablet Opinions

I am curious what everyone thinks
I am looking for a tablet and have some price flexibility, but don't want to go crazy. Sadly, I don't even know if I will jump on any of these but wanted some opinions.
If you were buying today, and had three options, which of the following would you choose?
Acer Iconia A200 16GB refurb for $250
Toshiba Thrive 32GB refurb for $260
Motorola Xoom 32GB NEW for $320
Anyway, any thoughts at all will be greatly appreciated.
I got a Nook Tab for my son for Christmas, rooted it and put CM7 on it. Nice tablet for $250 and there has been some good progress at porting CM9 to it. Only complaint is most Gameloft games won't work on it unless you change the build.prop, otherwise you get "incompatible device" when trying to download the data files.
For myself personally, I'll probably be picking up a Nexus Tab once they are released.

love my 7" galaxy tab. Though I'll be thinking long and hard about the nexus tab when it comes out.. give me an excuse to pass my galaxy to the woman..
I picked up a Visio VTAB1008 for $150 off WOOT and have been loving it. It recently got an upgrade to HC, but I stayed on GB to retain root access
IMO, a lot depends on what you are going to use the tablet for
Reading books, playing games, development, a laptop replacement, etc..
This will largely determine how much power and space you need, as well as what other features are must have options
i have a nook color. runs cm7 and 9 magnificently. bought it refurb from the barnes and noble ebay store for 119 bucks.
I have a Kindle Fire running CM9 with daily development. Fun times in that forum.

I didn't bother to do it myself, but there are guides on the Nook Tab forum on how to use a Nexus S, Droid 3 and other build.prop that allow those games to work.

Asus Transformer Prime. Best one out there by far.
I have a touchpad 32 gigabyte with cm9 and my good old epic. but I'd rather replace them both with the galaxy note

None of those.
I'd get a Touchpad 16gb, they can be had for about $170 used and $200 Refurb on Ebay.. CM9/AOKP is working awesome on it (camera/mic is not working yet) and is quite quick, a bit faster than most Tegra 2 tablets.
The IPS LCD on the Touchpad reproduces color better than all of the tablets you listed even if it is lower resolution.. It is very similar to the iPad 2 screen.
If you want something in the $300-400 range, the Galaxy Tab 10.1 is very good and has a great screen (esp if calibrated), although I don't think CM9 is stable yet. But honestly, if you wait a few months you'll probably be able to get a tablet with a high density screen and a Tegra 3 for the same price.

Anyway, another question, has anyone ever heard of the website http://jortelshopping.com/?
They have pretty good prices but they scare the heck out of me. I can find no reviews on them, and everything I do find just makes me suspicious. Anybody ever use them?
As an Epic CM9 + Nook Color CM7 user, I've been following Android tablets to replace both. Don't get me wrong, I love both and use them daily.
In summer, I'll probably either
1. Get Galaxy note (if available) and consolidate the devices.
2. Get Android 4.3"+ phone & Google (Nexus?) tablet.
What about the Samsung note? Just watched some iTunes videos. Cool. Might be comming to Sprint as well.
I love my epic, but intrested in the new nexus. Wait and see if the note comes to Sprint?

Found one Nexus 10 (WalMart) tonight...just couldn't do it.

I love my Note 2. I have always been a fan of AOSP, however, and have owned the N1, NS, GNEX and N4 (sold it a few weeks ago). The battery life on the N4 was terrible. But there is something that always lures me back to stock Android...so much that I happened upon a Nexus 10 at WalMart this evening...just sitting there in the case.
I went back and forth on this idea. Sell my Note 2, get a Nexus 4 and buy the Nexus 10. I could sell my Note 2 for like $600, maybe more (have extra genuine battery, two flip covers, Allshare Hub and MHL cable). My thought is if I got the Nexus 10, I would be fine with the Nexus 4 for mobile use.
In short, I chickened out. The Note 2 just does everything so well. I am still tempted, but at the end of the day, this device is pretty darn hard to beat.
Anyone else foregoing tablet purchases because of this phone? I never thought the day would come that I'd pass on a Nexus 10 (have never seen one for sale). Today was that day. Feels good that I saved the cash but I do still wonder if a N4 + N10 is a better route...
I was going to do the same thing s you, but the damn battery life on the nex4 put me off. I'm a big fan of aosp too but nova launcher makes the touch wiz better. Lol

This is a good thing to keep in mind, if Google keeps with their annual update yearly on Nexus line, the N7 and N10 could be having updated versions rolling out. Or perhaps something completely different. Perhaps they don't plan on updating them at all.
That said, for a tablet you have to consider a few things you want. First what size do you want? Then what do you want to do with said tablet? What accessories do you want for your tablet? What is your budget? What OS do you want (perhaps you want a different OS, to experience different apps from a different ecosystem)? What sort of connectivity do you want (HDMI, 3G/4G...etc)? These all could point you to different options.

All valid points. Very much a nexus fan. Can't put a price limit on great tech. Android os obviously. Doesn't matter which one as root and custom ROM is a must. Size doesn't matter. Haha. WiFi connectivity is fine but 3 or 4g is an option too. Really just wanted to know what the census was out there.

Ask yourself, what you want that tablet for?
After buying mine, i find it kinda under used...
I don't need a tablet, but it would be good for the whole family, especially video call and acting as an HTPC. I've decided that it must be able to play HD videos smoothly and have physical HDMI output. This unfortunately rule out the Nexus 7 which I really like the form factor of. The Nexus 10 is overkill for my needs.
So I probably will pick up the Kindle Fire HD, but seem the rom development progress slowly and Amazon OS seems dreadful from an AOSP user. But the price point and HDMI output make it the main contender.
Maybe I'll just go for the Asus TF300T since it's only $50 more used, but I have Asia tablet in the past, good hardware but the proprietary charging port is a turn off.
I'm not ruling out Chinese tablets with rk3066 cpu as well.

so, spen was more important than screen res for me.
Well while looking for a suitable 7" tablet, I went ahead and picked up a Kindle Fire HD and is underwhelmed even after rooting it. Unfortunately the ones on display at WorseBuy are in demonstration mode which lock down everything.. But I didn't want to spend more than $200. Other choices I looked at were:
-Nexus 7 is out of the question due to no HDMI out. I knew this device would be perfect except for this one factor.
-I could order some pretty high performance RK3066 chip Chinese tablet for under $100, but skip them because they have poor built quality, lots of people with battery and charging issues, sketchy to no warranty and probably not much development.
-Other choices available are the Nook tablet which I'm impressed with the high res screen, but quick search shows CM10 currently perform poorly on it and having to fork out $40 for an HDMI adapter.
-Same with Samsung and Asus tablets which also use proprietary ports and needing adapters purchase that I dislike.
-The Acer A110 tablet almost match with what I want with the bonus of microSD slot, except the for horrid screen quality and low resolution. There were the Lenovo tablet which seems to have nice build, but $300.
Main reason to get the Kindle Fire HD was the stereo speaker and standard usb and hdmi ports. Interestingly, this device have the same CPU spec as the Galaxy Nexus, yet the XBMC hardware accelerated test build playback movies smoother on my Nexus than this tablet which stuttered even with 720p MKV videos. This might be a deal killer, but its due to the poor optimization done by Amazon. Probably the only hope of my keeping this tablet would be for a working CM10.1 version for it. My disappoint of the performance of this device is mainly due to the software itself, the hardware are good. Its my first experience with Amazon AppStore and I think its junk compared to the PlayStore(though I know I can side load the PlayStore to this). It seem to be a wall downed garden like Apple, except in this case the interface sucks too.
I am very happy with the quality when connected to the TV however, along with stereo speakers, screen quality and front camera and mic for video calling is nice.
I have a Xoom running cm10.1-nightly now, if I would need to buy a new tablet I would go for a Nexus 10.
Multiple users is probably the best thing that has happened for Android on tablets. The only way to be guaranteed to have this feature is to buy a Nexus.
7" might be too small, but you might get used to it over time.
Well I returned the Kindle Fire HD and got the Nexus 7, naturally. Just fed up with the 'Amazon OS', and even after making my own 'fastboot cable' to be able to boot the device into fastboot mode and install TWRP, installed PlayStore, the device is still very limited and looks like there aren't much developers interested. My chance of ever buying another Amazon device is zero because of their locked down OS design. Too bad because it have a better screen, speaker and seem more durable than the Nexus 7 with hdmi out.
I also saw an Asus Memo Pad Smart 10 for $299 at the store with Tegra3 also, it use standard microUSB port and standard micro-HDMI out and microSD slot, amazing combo, its very rare to find a device with all these standard ports without all the proprietary craps. But being 10" its just not as portable and comfortable for me. I'm just getting the Nexus 7 to be sure I'm happy with the software and developer community, but I'm definitely checking on the development of this device also.

[Q] How is your Nexus holding up?

I should be selling my iPhone tomorrow (coming back from the dark side) and I plan on buying a used Galaxy Nexus because it seems to have tons of support and decent specs for the money I'm willing to spend. And I went completely crazy without an Android device and grew to hate my iPhone after switching from an S2. I just miss flashing ROMs every half hour.
Anyway, I just wanna know how it's holding up for everyone else. Is it becoming outdated yet? Losing support? Does it wear out quickly (dead pixels, broken buttons, etc.)? Or do people still love it as their daily driver?
Just curious because it's pretty much this or the S2. So please, let me know.

Mine is second hand too. Mine is now amazingly fast. It still has a lot of development altough some developers left for the Nexus 4 but theyre being replaced by new ones . Some people have issues with their phones but I didnt have any problems. I think it is a good disicion.

Coming back from the dark side, haha lol
The GNex certainly is good, but I wouldn't say its the best decision to buy it now, since quad core phones are becoming quite ubiquitous you might wanna wait for the next Nexus or go for the Nexus 4 just to be future proof and have more muscle.
EDIT : Nexus over the ugly S2 any day. Just for its beautiful looks and great development support.

Haha. Thanks. And I get your point. But you have to keep in mind that I'm a 16 year old with no contract. Lol. I just cant afford the latest and greatest, so while I keep up with smartphones (technology in general), I have to settle for ports instead the phones themselves.
Although I was considering the EVO 4G LTE (more muscle), but I figured I'd settle for the support and looks of the Nexus just because i think I'd be more satisfied.
But thanks to everyone! Looks like I'm getting the Nexus. Lol.
It's a good phone. Go for it
