[Q] How is your Nexus holding up? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I should be selling my iPhone tomorrow (coming back from the dark side) and I plan on buying a used Galaxy Nexus because it seems to have tons of support and decent specs for the money I'm willing to spend. And I went completely crazy without an Android device and grew to hate my iPhone after switching from an S2. I just miss flashing ROMs every half hour.
Anyway, I just wanna know how it's holding up for everyone else. Is it becoming outdated yet? Losing support? Does it wear out quickly (dead pixels, broken buttons, etc.)? Or do people still love it as their daily driver?
Just curious because it's pretty much this or the S2. So please, let me know.

Mine is second hand too. Mine is now amazingly fast. It still has a lot of development altough some developers left for the Nexus 4 but theyre being replaced by new ones . Some people have issues with their phones but I didnt have any problems. I think it is a good disicion.

Coming back from the dark side, haha lol
The GNex certainly is good, but I wouldn't say its the best decision to buy it now, since quad core phones are becoming quite ubiquitous you might wanna wait for the next Nexus or go for the Nexus 4 just to be future proof and have more muscle.
EDIT : Nexus over the ugly S2 any day. Just for its beautiful looks and great development support.

Haha. Thanks. And I get your point. But you have to keep in mind that I'm a 16 year old with no contract. Lol. I just cant afford the latest and greatest, so while I keep up with smartphones (technology in general), I have to settle for ports instead the phones themselves.
Although I was considering the EVO 4G LTE (more muscle), but I figured I'd settle for the support and looks of the Nexus just because i think I'd be more satisfied.
But thanks to everyone! Looks like I'm getting the Nexus. Lol.

It's a good phone. Go for it

Glad I got GN over GS3

Title says it all... the gs3 is basically a GN with a few very slight upgrades but I am so glad I got the GSM GN from google @ 400 without a contract than waiting for a GS3
But it watches you when you sleep!
Same here
Mine will be here tomorrow and I can't wait!
S3 was an absolute waste of an opportunity to push the envelop and Samsung failed for their "flagship"
I'm happy I ended up going with the smarter option. $400 for a Nexus is an amazing deal compared to $600+ at the end of summer for a touchwiz plagued ugly designed phone...

While there are some technical advantages to the new SIII they are not enough, the Nexus looks better, Stock ICS is brilliant, and Jellybean to come...
I get it.. as i got my gnex last week and seeing as the sgs3 is a dualcore lte device it really is nothen but a slightly larger display but making a topic about it seems odd to me.
Looks like a decent phone. However, I think I'm sticking with the Nexus series. I absolutely love the design of this phone, and I also love AOSP roms.

I saw this coming, that's why i sold my SGS2 for a GNex.
I can't be happier
I wouldn't consider the SGS3 a failure, and I'm not sure why others would either. It is using what may be one of the best SoCs available in a phone, even though it isn't the most advanced chip out right now. It offers a large range of built in storage PLUS a microSD card slot that can double your storage available. The only thing that disappoints me with the phone is it has hardware buttons for home, menu, and back. I was hoping that with ICS, phones would stop having actual buttons for those items, but apparently not.
I can't get over how ugly the back is. It's like the first Galaxy S. I was never on the “lol Samsung is cheap!!!" bandwagon but the glossy finish kind of does make it look cheap.
Anyways, also happy I got a Nexus, feels a lot more solid than my i9100 did. I love the design of this phone.

I have to hand it to samsung for working hard on the software side. I really like a lot of the gestures and new software they put on the gs3. Here's hoping we get a port starting with the voice software!

^That. As simple as that is, it is one of the best things about the galaxy nexus.
For me personally, the only advantage the GS3 has on my Nexus is the wireless charging.

There is another advantage for games like Draw Something, since you can use a more accurate stylus (like with the Galaxy Note) with the GS3.

Fairly disappointed by the S3 at this point... I think the Gnex has spoiled me for some time. The S3 just doesn't look "sexy". At least the Nexus has a beautiful front, and no physical keys or capacitive buttons to ruin it. It's pure screen, and that's how it should be.
Even looking past the body, the specs don't blow me away... Nothing is really making use of quad core at this point. I really don't need to pay $800 to see better lighting in the mediocre Shadow Gun.
Oh well... We'll see what the next Nexus has in store.
firstly, i think these threads have merit in analysing the next supposed flagship phone from a manufacturer
having just woken up to read about the s3 and having a gnex i can say physical buttons dont bother me now.. sure i thought they were old hat but after having softkey buttons, what really is the difference. They also take up some of the screen always anyway... so the 4.8 inch screen on the s3 is actually that... screen..
the better camera in the s3 and the quad core also entice me, somewhat for the quad core 'wank' factor as no lie that is cool... but im always disappointed of the camera on the gnex (and i am no photo junkie but atleast on my sensation i could read writing from a little distance on the photo with gnex i cant no matter what i have tried)...
i was actually going to shell out for a one x but with the useless unlocking offered by htc i think ill be sticking away from them devices now (such a shame when i hate the way most sammy phones usually use odin... fastboot, easy recovery installation kicks butt) so it will be interesting to see how sammy will capitalize on ease of modification when they actually drop as i will probably wait until the first recoveries n root appear before i look to purchase mine...

Too late to buy this?

I'm considering buying the Nexus now that it is 400 dollars but I'm not sure if I should wait for the next best phone. Suggestions?
Edit: I'm concerned that I will get a phone that has banding issues/purple tint. I've read a ton of threads about this issue and it is concerning.

A lot of us here will tell you that the next best phone won't happen until the next nexus and none of us know when that'll be as there hasn't been any formal announcement.
I've got my galaxy nexus a little less than a month ago and I have no regrets.
You could pretty safely buy this for $399 and hold onto it for the next Nexus. The resale price won't be much lower. Or just hold onto the GNex why not.
Got my nexus 4 days ago, and I'm really glad i chose this phone. Haven't experienced any lag yet, and I have been running the most heavy 3D games available for android.. so you should definitely not be concerned about performance.
It's also easy to root, there's lots of development going on, it has a big super amoled hd display etc.. this phone will also be getting android jellybean when it's released.
Yes, there is several phones getting higher scores than the nexus in benchmarks, but performance-wise, there's actually not many areas where this phone could be improved. I don't really see the need of quad-core cpu's yet.
So, yea... I totally recommend you this phone!
edit: If camera is one of the most important things you're looking for in a smartphone, this phone's probably not for you... personally I take like 2-10 pictures a week .. so I really don't care about the cam..
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
It really depends on what you use the phone for. Do you watch movies more than you take pictures? Do you use the speaker to listen to music? That's just two of many factors you have to look at. Do you root and flash roms? Overall this phone is a good device should you over for some time. I for one get tired of phones and have to change every 5-6 months. I love the gnex but I think the camera and speaker volume could be better.

The speaker problem can be fixed with apps like Volume+, after installed it my speaker is quite loud. But the camera is really a concern.
I recommend this phone for almost everyone, the only exception is if you really need a good camera on the phone. This camera is average at best.
That said, I would buy this phone again today. The One X is really a temptation, but I know that being an Android geek that loves updated software I would regret to buy a not Nexus device. Did this 2 times and it was a pain in the ass, now I just buy phones from the Nexus line.
I am kind of in the same boat, lol. I just got the HTC One S, tho. I would like to switch to verizon for coverage reasons, but there seem to be issues with the 4G/3G connections. I played with one at the verizon store by my apartment, and it had a lot of issues. And I have read about the problems with data dropping, which it seemed to be doing at the store. I also love the loudness and clarity of the speaker on my one s. The one s camera has some fun things to it, tho. However I generally turn the pixel size down to under 5M anyway. Good luck with your decision. Maybe I will get the HSPA+ one and sell whichever one I don't like later.
I think I would miss having the MicroSD slot (even though I don't really use it). I don't have LTE in my area so that isn't really an issue for me. I'm slightly nervous about the display. I've read a lot about the banding issue that a lot of people have as well as the purple tint that others have. The prospect of fast updates sounds good (still waiting for ICS for my skyrocket...) but I'm not sure how much I really want the nexus.
The next best android phone comes out way too frequently. I personally wouldn't use this as a deciding factor. Do you like the gnex or not? Does it have features that will satisfy you? Does it have the community support that you want or need?

Just got my Sprint Nexus on Sunday and so far I'm psyched about it. I wanted a sexy looking device along with performance and the SG3/EVO LTE didn't have the look factor I wanted. I can sacrifice .2 ghz of a processor and don't find the camera all that bad on the Nexus. Plus Sprint was giving me 70 bucks for my Evo and 50 bucks through Google Wallet. So technically, after all is said and done, I'd pay $70 for the Nexus.

honastly you cannot go wrong with this phone, I love the freedom that it has provided to me with being a pentaband phone. You will always be waiting for the next best phone. Unless your looking forward to all the graphicly intense games in the pipline for tegra 3.

A nexus always has the latest OS and the Galaxy Nexus has few bugs... You really can't beat this device. The HTC One X is a bit better, but it will always be on par or behind on upgrades. So, if you upgrade every year, sure wait.... If you upgrade every 2, then go with Nexus, it'll take longer for it to feel like an old device due to quicker software updates.
I bought mine a week ago. No regrets. I spent a year on Windows Phone and couldn't have asked for a better way to cone back to Android.
I'd heard some complaints about they camera, but mine is very good. I do have the international version. No blurriness or off colors.
The phone is fast. Nothing else to say about it. No lagging or stuttering, fast app switching, beautiful screen. I noticed pixels on the Galaxy S Pentile display, but this one is beautiful.
Oh yea, I've left the phone stock. I'm sure I'll mod it in the future, but right now I haven't found a reason to. It runs exactly how I want it to.
I say buy the phone.

[Q] Worth Upgrading?

I currently own Nexus One and i was planning on upgrading because its a grandfather in android family My question is
1. Whether Galaxy Nexus is worth upgrading or should I look for some other phone?
2. What are the known issues with this phone? With nexus one, there were issues with the touch in lower part of the screen, initial 3g issues, touching capacitive buttons on the top half portion :crying:
3. Hows the build quality and battery life?

Wait for the new LG Nexus reveal and pricing at the end of the month before deciding. Who knows how it will turn out but it could be something like an 8GB LG Nexus for $400, 16GB LG Nexus for $450, and the Galaxy Nexus either stays at $350 or drops to $300, all available directly from the Play Store. Those would be excellent prices but might just be a little wishful thinking.

OP, if you can wait a few weeks, see what's up with the next Nexus. Worst case scenario if you don't like the new Nexus device, the Galaxy Nexus will drop in price a little bit and you can pick one up.
If you're going GSM, its a generally solid device. Nothing blatantly wrong with it you should be worried about.

[Q] waiting for 2013 nexus?

How many people are gonna wait for next years nexus phone instead of buying the nexus 4?
I only recently bought a Galaxy nexus and i'm definitely gonna wait because the only major differences are the camera, CPU and battery
Whats everyone's thoughts? whos gonna wait and whose gonna take the plunge?
If the N4 was the same price as the GNex was at launch, sure that'd be an easy decision, but it being so cheap makes it hard to resist.
Personally, I think I'm going to wait and see how 4.2 runs on the GNex and then make up my mind.

I'll be waiting for the 2013 nexus.
Nexus 4 is step 1.... I prefer to wait until they've got it stable
Having recently acquire a Galaxy Tab 2, in addition to my SGN which is only 9 months old, I think the remainder of this year's electronics budget is going towards the new ARM Chromebook. Quad core is nice and all but having just started writing Android apps, there's the danger of only testing on really fast hardware and discovering your app is a dud only when it's too late
I foresee my SGN lasting at least one battery replacement -- when updates stop coming out, I'll get whatever the current Nexus is and put CyanogenMod on the SGN. Plus resale values have probably tanked ever since the N4 annoucement came out.
I will wait. I don't want to give my money to LG again... (I had an O2x)
While the nexus 4 is a great improvement over the Galaxy Nexus. The non removable battery kinda killed it for me. I have a spare battery for my phone that i use allot and i can't go with a phone without a removable battery.
As long as my Galaxy Nexus does everything i need it to do I won't abandon it.

I'm going to wait and see, but currently I'm leaning towards "keep the GNex & upgrade next year". I don't need the extra horsepower, the screen is a minimal upgrade and the looks aren't really spectacular enough to make me want to switch for fashion.
The camera improvements are nice, but don't seem enough to make me want to bite.
And we get all the 4.2 goodness anyway.

Same here. I had the horrible LG Revolution, and they've lost my business forever.
Plus how on earth did Google make the decision to drop LTE. That is going got bite them in the butt. once you have real 4G LTE speeds, not that HPSA BS you'll never want to go back.
I see the Nexus 4 like an inferior Galaxy Nexus. The ONLY things it has going for it is an extra Gig of RAM, a "supposedly" better camera, and a better processor.
To me a nice dual core phone with a nice screen, excellent ROM support and freaking LTE makes much more sense.

I'm not a gamer so I don't need to shell out another $400 for the 16g device with tax right now. Most apps are not even going to be optimized for the quad processor right now anyway. Our genx will run 4.2 nice and smooth and easily get me thru till the next one is released next year. If I tried to keep up with every phone that comes out that's better, I'd go broke!

+1 ! Considering selling y S3 on eBay and paying the difference to get the S4.
I want to know what is the difference between the S3 and the S4. Its not that more different. The only reason I would get for being wireless charging and the core. My point is that I still have htc evo which is a great phone and the camera is still good. I cant really tell the difference except it is lighter. Also it makes a great back up phone for my S3. phone comes put every year how can ppl afford it and itsba waste of money I rather weight every 2 years after the s3.
No it isn't that different, and the s3 has wireless charging too.

I'm going to sell my s3 and get the S4 or HTC One and pay out of pocket pretty much what a upgrade would cost. You just have to time when to sell your old devices so you get a good amount of money to cover the next device if buying off contract. There is quite a difference in the S4 and S3 but the S3 is still a great device, just no longer the latest and greatest. Some worthy key upgrades of the S4 are a 1.9 GHz quad core processor compared to the S3 1.5 dualcore. 1080 screen with 441ppi S3 306ppi S4 13 mp camera S3 8 mp, S4 4.2.2 Android S3 4.1.2 etc. Plus software features updated apps etc. My brother has the S4 its nice.

My brother got his last Friday, so I've played with it. I was at his house today and I will be there tomorrow. He has kids so there is so much stuff on it its crazy. Mine will be much better. He has a really cheap case to. Its kind of wrong to me. I had to remove a task killer app off of today and explain those are no longer needed. But anyway when I was in Best Buy today the Samsung guy had a S4 in his pocket and he let me play with it for an hour. The camera is amazing I already know that. They had a TV set up so I was looking at pics on a big screen through whatever Samsung calls their mirrorcast. Its a great phone and definitely feels like a upgrade from the S3. And I will appreciate it even more when I get it because on Sunday when my eBay auction ends I will be shipping off my S3 and going back to my S2 until next week when I get the S4. Keeping it all in the family.

Oh ya and the screen is freaking amazing. I played with my brothers but unless you look at some pics you don't get the full feel of how many pixels there are. At best buy there was a bunch of preloaded pics taken by some ridiculous photographer supposedly with the S4. But those pictures looking absolutely amazing on the screen. I though my Samsung 8000 series TV had a good picture on it.

I will say so far the device is well worth it. A few minor bugs here and their but can be fixed with updates easily. A few features of the phone are amazing. However the scrolling webpages with your eyes is alright but its more like it reads your eyes and your tilt your head, hard to adjust to but fun to creap people out
So far Sprint is the only one with a unlocked bootloader and no real devolepment has struck. Got a couple of CM 10.1 ASOP and i believe Slim Bean. We have one guy who made a rom with all bloat crap removed which is night. Other than that not too much other than minor mods like hotspot, 4-1 reboot, and something else.

Its still really good and the quadrent scores are in the ballpark of 12000. so when its fully OC and UC it will be an awesome device. Battery life is incredible even with a lot of use. But the major bugs are to much bloatware running in background (my opinion on that part) causing a lot of lags but clears up easy but when it hits its noticeable. Other bug is or could be a defect is some devices have a red, blue, or purple tint on solid black screens which i haven't seen.

Quadrant scores mean zero/zilch/nada to me. It's all BS to me honestly lol.
Well I understand to some it is just BS. But to others it means a lot. You take something like the htc hero it cant even touch 600 in quadrent as the thing was slow as dirt and now with like the s4 its over 12000 which at that point it really doesn't matter because no game or anything is going to crack that down. It may have hiccups and lag once in a while (due to bug) but either way it is fast and thats thats counts
