Kernel/Recovery ????? - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

I've neglected my girlfriends E4GT since I got my S3, what's the best kernel/recovery to flash? Don't want to risk a brick and it seems like things have moved on since the old EL29 days. Looking to run AOSP JellyBean 4.1.1.
She's currently on CM9 Alpha 4 with no custom recovery installed.
Thanks for the read and the help.

Battery life on jb roms is still pretty bad but the roms are great. Why not run the latest cm9? Its on beta1 and pretty solid with good battery life.

Thanks for the heads up on JB roms and battery life. I thought I would just update her to the latest thing out there, but if it isn't good enough for a DD than I appreciate it.
As far as the best way to go CM9 Beta 1 is it best practice to ODIN the EL29 CWM or is there a more simple way?

Anyone with any recommendations?

Jelly bean is a daily driver for me I'm running paranoid JB..battery life is fine for me...I use the Pegasus scheduler and noop io
A good IcS Rom would be the blu kuban...I recommend that
A not about battery life since you said you neglected her phone..take the battery out and see if it spins on a flat surface if so the battery is bulging and bad..it would need to be replaced..
As far as the best way to flash cm9 beta one..Odin the el 26 kernel
-TeaM VeNuM Like A Boss

I flashed from el29 to cm10 5.3 alpha. I just wiped data and flashed with a safe recovery. Now on nightly 9/29 and everything is great but battery could be better. Jb too good to change though.

Most stable ICS ROM

Hi guys
I have been using Calk ROMs for a while now and tried to install the ICS one with no luck. The battery goes from 65 % to 15 just after restarting the phone. Anyone can tell me what is the most stable ICS ROM right now for the E4GT?
Thanks

they all suffer across the board from about the same issues... plus its either Miui, AOKP or CM9 and they are all having issues. Just wait it out
I have had really good luck with BLEND GOODNESS ROM. Battery life is ok on it, not as good as my old GB ROM. This ROM is good enough to be used as a daily driver.
Blend Goodness Rom is the best it had the best battery life. I use to use easy battery saver now I don't and it has some great features like beats audio and Sony bravia engine here is the link

Just for clarification the issue with the battery going from 65% to 15% wasn't because Calk's ROM was unstable it's an issue across all the leaks. The issue isn't so much that your battery is dying uber fast, it's an issue with the battery software (that tracks and reports your battery percentage) not being calibrated to the actual hardware/battery. Any time you install a new ROM you should allow for one to two full discharge and charging cycles before you get a real solid battery reporting. Unfortunately with the leaks coming out as fast as they are this hasn't been much of a reality...
As far as stable and awesome? I'm a big fan of the Miljzz's Goodness Blend. It's awesome! If you're going for more of a stock feel Calk's been cranking them out too.
EDIT: I heard that Venum's is pretty cool but I haven't tried it yet.
+1 to Blend! It's smooth and sexy.
I have been following "The ICS Goodness Blend" for a while now and it is MUCH more stable than when the first ICS leak came out. I have had no SOD on V1.9 yet.
I was say Venoms new ics rom bcuz its been running perfect...very good battery life for me and also Mijj rom as well...but im currently running Venoms and its excellent!!!
Mijjah Blend ICS ROM by far
Thanks guys. I will try your suggestions and see.
Best
Mario
I recommend u do a clean install of the BLEND GOODNESS FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS INN THE OP if u need any files our have any questions pm me

4.0.3 epic touch
running fc07 stock rooted rom fco6 repacked kernal fc07 modem all seems well batt life fine runs so smoothg everything working 3g 4g wifi signal bars all the ics goodies very very hot rom flashed all over rouge recovery first cauilks format all zip then flashed rom then modem last kernal do the normal factory data reset wipe dalvik and catch reboot did not get stuck on 4g screen so start up went smooth as pie lovin this so nice
There are only two ics roms for our phone, aosp (cm9, miui) and Samsung (fb and fc based roms). Any other ROM is just a themed or scripted version of the previously mentioned and will have all the same bugs.

[Q] Quick Question

Hello everyone,
I am new to the Epic 4G Touch and I have a question? There are quite a few roms for this devices and I was wondering witch rom is the latest? I was running AOKP, but the battery life for me was vary bad so I had to go back to stock for now.. Is there any ICS roms with great and or better battery life than AOKP?
Try cm9. Its fast, smooth and stable. Or you could give a touchwiz rom like Calks 1.6 rom + kobridge tweaks a go.

If you absolutely have to be on ICS, I tend to agree with Rick.
Calk 1.6: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1527041
Kobridge Tweaks for Battery Life: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1668853
In any case, for the BEST battery life & stability, you should go with a Gingerbread ROM. At least until ICS is fully released.

Been using CM9 since the start. After updating to Alpha 4 after a fresh install battery life has been pretty good.
Battery life after fresh install seems to last most of the day. However life depends on many different issues and what you have installed.
Calks seems to last pretty good. Battery tweaked version seemed to last all day for me.
Thanks everyone!
There is one thing I do not get is those battery tweaks? There are several zips in it and I'm not sure witch one to flash?

Kobridge's tweaks are pretty good. I wrote the flashable zips and Kobridge has been busy tweaking.
SF = Super Fast (least battery savings)
F = Fast
M = Medium
A = Agressive (most battery savings but you may notice a little lag here and there)
Edit: There is a set specifically designed for Calk's ICS rom too!

I don't know how new you are to these roms... just give them a chance to settle in. It takes a couple of days for any fresh install to settle down so don't expect to see real results for a little while.
i know blue kubans rom is pretty good on battery life as well. and has alot of choose your own customization built into the rom with rom updater. i recommend u check it out. its just screams awesomeness if ur tired of the old classic epic 4g touch theme

+1 to crappy JB batt life. Have tried different kernels but nothing matches batt life from when I was on ICS
I'm conflicted. part of me wants to go back to ICS, but then again I love what project butter has done

I guess every handset is diff. What rom/kernel are you on and what radios get used most often? I had ICS with stock kernel and now AOSP JB with Trinity and my usage pattern hasn't changed (wifi/2g always on, emails/calendar always on sync etc) but batt life is much better, almost 5 hrs screen on.Am able to get through a full workday without a charge.
(Loved cm10 nightly's but for some reason they keep getting bogged down after a few days of use and get back to good as a fresh install when I reboot....will wait for a stable release)

What ROM/Kernel do you use for best battery life?

Hey all,
Just wanted to see which ROM/Kernel everyone is using. I'm looking to get the best battery life I can. I'm currently using Sammy but I've heard that the stock kernel is good as well? I'd love to hear everyone's recommendations and suggestions.
I'm using the current AOKP (actually i haven't installed the update from today yet) as well as the latest Ktoonez's KT747 kernel and have nothing but great things to say about the battery life. The KT747 also comes with Ktweaker for overclocking and undervolting which when balanced properly can increase performance all the while actually improving battery life.

To upgrade or not to upgrade...

Hello everyone, Epic 4G Touch user here. I'm wondering if I should update to Jellybean from what I am currently running now *cues drumroll* Calkulin's E4GT GB ROM.
The reason I'm still on GB is because I have found the battery is miles better than stock ICS, the last ROM I flashed over a year ago. I am wondering if FK23 or GB27 have good battery life, because once again, very important. Also, is there an room for OC'ing in any JB ROM?
Gracias.
Battery life is dependent on usage.
We have users getting anywhere from 12 hours to 2 days if not more.
Until we have kernels built from the source that just dropped the other day, there is no room for OC. That is coming very soon though.

This is overrated. It's not a science. Gingerbread has fewer services running and many reviewers haver noted gb got better battery life on same phone than after ics upgrade.

I used Calkulin's rom for about six months before switching over to Jellybean. It was the FK23 Jellybean that finally made me permanently switch over because it was smooth, reliable, and offered good battery life. I tried several ICS builds but I didn't like them.
I'm currently on the latest, which is GB27, and it's great. Great battery life and everything works well. In fact, I'm gonna be flashing wifey's and mom's E4GT's to GB27 from the Calkulin's v3.0 soon.

I would upgrade. I agree with optimummind. I came from caulkins rom and loved them. I hesitated too coming over to jb but glad I did. I now run stock gb27 kobridge. Tested it for a week and loved it. I did get a new battery and can go a full day with good use. I did switch the wife's phone to same rom saying it was an upgrade. She likes better than gb and ics.

Ok guys, I'm going to make the jump. I just bought two new batteries so I can experience JB with virgin batteries.
Edit: How to do I go from GB to JB? I don't see any threads regarding this.
So far I have downloaded Kobridge's Deodexed GB27, GB27 Modem, and GB27 Kernel
Hah, I'm in the EXACT same boat as you, OP. Still on Calk's 3.0 GB Rom. I may try JB, but I fear I'll just end up coming back to Calk's. Even as it is I don't get enough battery as I'd like, tethering kills the battery. It is possible to revert back to GB Bootloader from JB, right?
PS Jahjah, I believe this is what we follow to upgrade to JB: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=35539014&postcount=4
Just an update, I have successfully updated to JB. The interface is kinda wonky though, I'm thinking about trying Super Nexus and seeing how that goes. I really like AOSP builds.
Concerning battery, I have 1.5 hours of screen on and my battery is currently at 80 percent. I think this is better than GB!
