To upgrade or not to upgrade... - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

Hello everyone, Epic 4G Touch user here. I'm wondering if I should update to Jellybean from what I am currently running now *cues drumroll* Calkulin's E4GT GB ROM.
The reason I'm still on GB is because I have found the battery is miles better than stock ICS, the last ROM I flashed over a year ago. I am wondering if FK23 or GB27 have good battery life, because once again, very important. Also, is there an room for OC'ing in any JB ROM?
Gracias.

Battery life is dependent on usage.
We have users getting anywhere from 12 hours to 2 days if not more.
Until we have kernels built from the source that just dropped the other day, there is no room for OC. That is coming very soon though.

This is overrated. It's not a science. Gingerbread has fewer services running and many reviewers haver noted gb got better battery life on same phone than after ics upgrade.

I used Calkulin's rom for about six months before switching over to Jellybean. It was the FK23 Jellybean that finally made me permanently switch over because it was smooth, reliable, and offered good battery life. I tried several ICS builds but I didn't like them.
I'm currently on the latest, which is GB27, and it's great. Great battery life and everything works well. In fact, I'm gonna be flashing wifey's and mom's E4GT's to GB27 from the Calkulin's v3.0 soon.

I would upgrade. I agree with optimummind. I came from caulkins rom and loved them. I hesitated too coming over to jb but glad I did. I now run stock gb27 kobridge. Tested it for a week and loved it. I did get a new battery and can go a full day with good use. I did switch the wife's phone to same rom saying it was an upgrade. She likes better than gb and ics.

Ok guys, I'm going to make the jump. I just bought two new batteries so I can experience JB with virgin batteries.
Edit: How to do I go from GB to JB? I don't see any threads regarding this.
So far I have downloaded Kobridge's Deodexed GB27, GB27 Modem, and GB27 Kernel

Hah, I'm in the EXACT same boat as you, OP. Still on Calk's 3.0 GB Rom. I may try JB, but I fear I'll just end up coming back to Calk's. Even as it is I don't get enough battery as I'd like, tethering kills the battery. It is possible to revert back to GB Bootloader from JB, right?
PS Jahjah, I believe this is what we follow to upgrade to JB: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=35539014&postcount=4

Just an update, I have successfully updated to JB. The interface is kinda wonky though, I'm thinking about trying Super Nexus and seeing how that goes. I really like AOSP builds.
Concerning battery, I have 1.5 hours of screen on and my battery is currently at 80 percent. I think this is better than GB!

Jelly Bean is great. I am running Shadow_God's Jellyverse 1.0 with the themed AIO by TD, garwynn's source built GB27 kernel with Agat recovery, and Comodose 1.3 tweaks. I couldn't be happier...

Most stable ICS ROM

Hi guys
I have been using Calk ROMs for a while now and tried to install the ICS one with no luck. The battery goes from 65 % to 15 just after restarting the phone. Anyone can tell me what is the most stable ICS ROM right now for the E4GT?
Thanks

they all suffer across the board from about the same issues... plus its either Miui, AOKP or CM9 and they are all having issues. Just wait it out
I have had really good luck with BLEND GOODNESS ROM. Battery life is ok on it, not as good as my old GB ROM. This ROM is good enough to be used as a daily driver.
Blend Goodness Rom is the best it had the best battery life. I use to use easy battery saver now I don't and it has some great features like beats audio and Sony bravia engine here is the link

Just for clarification the issue with the battery going from 65% to 15% wasn't because Calk's ROM was unstable it's an issue across all the leaks. The issue isn't so much that your battery is dying uber fast, it's an issue with the battery software (that tracks and reports your battery percentage) not being calibrated to the actual hardware/battery. Any time you install a new ROM you should allow for one to two full discharge and charging cycles before you get a real solid battery reporting. Unfortunately with the leaks coming out as fast as they are this hasn't been much of a reality...
As far as stable and awesome? I'm a big fan of the Miljzz's Goodness Blend. It's awesome! If you're going for more of a stock feel Calk's been cranking them out too.
EDIT: I heard that Venum's is pretty cool but I haven't tried it yet.
+1 to Blend! It's smooth and sexy.
I have been following "The ICS Goodness Blend" for a while now and it is MUCH more stable than when the first ICS leak came out. I have had no SOD on V1.9 yet.
I was say Venoms new ics rom bcuz its been running perfect...very good battery life for me and also Mijj rom as well...but im currently running Venoms and its excellent!!!
Mijjah Blend ICS ROM by far
Thanks guys. I will try your suggestions and see.
Best

There are only two ics roms for our phone, aosp (cm9, miui) and Samsung (fb and fc based roms). Any other ROM is just a themed or scripted version of the previously mentioned and will have all the same bugs.

Looking for a STABLE ROM for the Step Daughter

Was looking for some pointers on a STABLE ROM
Stability is the number one item of importance, rather than ICS or GB, but ICS is preferred for the camera options..
Currently the ET4G is at the stock OTA ICS build, but it is not even activated at this point.
My Step Daughter is using my EVO 4G, and as I upgraded my GF to the SGS3, I want to drop the EVO and move her to the ET4G.
No real rush, I told her it would be a week or two, I am just looking for a build that is super stable, as I wont get much chance to update and/or modify the build once I get it fully setup and give it to her.
Think I am best off using the rooted version of the Stock ICS FF18 ROM, with a modded kernel and just leaving it at that point?
Sadly, I have spent far to much time in the Epic section for my phone, and haven't had a chance to sort through all the builds here.
No need for extra themes, or fancy mods, just basic ICS will suffice, she couldn't tell the difference anyways.
I tried both Blazer and Calk's GB ROM, but both had stability issues here and there, and I was hoping for some tips to use with a new ICS build, now that the OTA is out.
Any advice for better stability than:
Stock ICS build
CWM recovery
Modded Kernel (AGAT's ?)
and just let it go at that?
Well for ICS I'm running M'ICS 1.1 its very stable. Also using agat 0.2.1 dirty kernel (safe) for extra speed and battery life. As for GB, calkulin or blazer roms are very stable as well. I got good battery life on both. Just make sure you read up and ask questions if you not sure. Happy flashing.

Me personally I'm using the deodexed stock rooted ROM with Agat's safe kernel & Phaker's placebo script, & it's been super smooth for me so far

I have been leaning towards rooted stock ICS with AGAT's kernel, but figured I would see what flash-a-holics would advise

I'm gonna stay away from themes and tweaks, unless I find I got no choice...
Been a big fan of Calk's for a long time, and tried both before my GF got her SGS3, just seemed to have a few more issues with Blazer, but most was with Facebook, and I feel it may have been a FB app issue, and I also think I am gonna stay with the EL29 modem, as the newer ones didnt seem to work as well.
I may just keep both on the internal SD, and create a nand backup of both one I get the the phone fully setup, and let her try both for a week or two and see what works best for her in the Baltimore area.
Yeah the EL29 modern works good for me in the dmv area.. I also been having success with ff18 in dc

Stable ics??

Since there was the official release of ics for the E4GT FF18 if I'm not mistaken, I'm asking does it mean that their is a fully stable ics rom bug free?
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA
Nothing is ever bug free but all of the current roms not in alpha are stable enough for daily use.
Stable ics roms have been out before the official ics update.. The hype for us rooted users is that we got source.. But yes there are plenty of stable ics roms out there.. Make sure to read the OP.. Should have the bugs listed

I've been running the Blu Kuban from RUJELUS for months now, even before the official ICS release, and I couldn't be happier. There is even a ROM Updater built into it so you can update straight from your phone and the ROM itself is completely customizable without having to hook it back up to your PC for flashing. I can go 2 days with light-moderate use without needing to charge, and a full day from 7am to midnight with heavy use.
It's the cleanest and smoothest running ICS ROM I've tried, and I've tried quite a few. Calkulin's is good as well.

Unfortunately Calk's is outdated and he's not supporting it anymore. I went with Blazer ICS and it's running great for me. I like that it's debloated with very little themeing or 3rd-party apps added. There are also a bunch of mods that you can add on for more features (like adding reboot options to the power menu or fixing the GPS drivers). Recommended for sure.

Hello there peeps I need some help figuring this out. I I don't own this device I am just updating it for a friend who is stuck on gb.. I flashed a ics rom but it seems to be a Lil buggy even tho its apparently stock.. One of the blazer roms. I'm running Kobridge's FI25 ROM. It's pretty stock-ish, fluid and overall great. Battery is nice as well. I'd give that a look and try.
Just go to settings and about phone and update firmware or android. The latest official ics build is fh13 so if he is on gb you will have to update to ff18 then fh13 or you can download a one click and use Odin to update. Depends if you want it rooted or not. If he is rooted now and has removed stock apps you will have to use a bone click option or revert back to stock first. You can look up qbking77 on YouTube and every custom rom he pretty much has a video for along with how to get the stock ota updates. To get the stock ics look after updating to the ics build go to Sprint id to change to the stock look or download a launcher like nova launcher or apex or whatever you prefer. If you want a stock ics rom with root you would want an aosp rom like cyanogenmod beta 1. Go to the original development thread.

I have had no issues at all with the ics ota updates but a lot of people have claimed issues. I did a factory reset and wiped cache after the updates and never had issues with battery or blue tooth or whatever else people complain about. I would say let her try ics for a week and see for herself. You can always go back to gb if she doesn't like it. I love cm9 beta 1 I just have some data issues sometimes but it's still being developed so I'm sure the minor issues the rom has are being worked on as we speak. There is also tons of leaks for ics the latest released leak is fi25. And I think it's supposed to be the last leak for ics until jelly bean is leaked.

Tappin' Typin'
FH13 the best so far.
Check this thread [Oficial OTA Repository] . I post all official OTA links. Download them all in order them copy paste them in SD card. Go to recovery and flash them in the right order.
Note: You must be pure stock and use stock recovery.
Instructions just in case:
1. You don't need to rename zip.
2. Copy to SD Card not Internal.
3. You most be full stock. (no root, no custom kernel etc.) these are official OTA zips directly from Google servers.

I put my woman on FF18 Stock rooted and changed build prop to say its Fi03 to avoid the update nag, added some lite placebo tweaks and she has zero complaints at all.

I'm guessing no love because this phone still doesn't have a proper running vanilla ICS or JB experience for it. I understand where he's coming from. With the Nexus S 4G I had, obviously a Google phone, they'd have various ICS and JB roms running smoothly. But for this device, Samsung/Sprint is holding it back from its potential.
I just can't say enough good things about Re-Calked ROM. Battery life and smoothness are top notch and there are tons of mods for theming purposes, including a transparent status bar mod.
Offically, FH13 is the way to go.
Leak-wise I think I'm going to try this combo next:
FI03 ROM
FI03 Repacked Kernel
FI25 Modem
...and see what happens. Love the signal on FI25 but hate that so many other features were either removed or changed. Also hate Connection Optimizer on FI03 but I can just leave it off.

Atrue we are a little bit behind and they treat us like step children, I'll give you that.... but have you not met the devs around here?
I think the dev and user support shown in E4gt's slice of paradise far outweighs official support at arms length
( and I've tried three jb builds, all of them daily-able)
I do see your point though.. a little official love couldn't hurt.
What I meant by no love is that ics is something I've been running so smooth since my HTC Sensation. The epic 4G touch has the same processor as the gti9100 yet I feel like sprint or Samsung is holding back. All the s2s I see are on gingerbread with people complaining about bugs and issues in official builds I find that unacceptable. But I don't have this device so idk how bad it is. I had a great ics experience both Sammy and aosp on international s2. The sprint variant seems like a killer device that just needs killer software to go with It.
Ps. thanks for everyone's input.. Putbuee on the latest ics leak odexed version with matching kernel and modem and the phone is flying!

What garwynn says is correct.
My g/f likes to stay on official releases, so she's on FH13. It was a HUGE improvement over the piece of crap that was FF18, so I would recommend that one.
Myself, I'm using stock rooted FI03 with stock FI03 kernel and FI03 modem. I'm pretty happy with this setup, and I probably won't be jumping to another ROM until JB is more stabilized.

Why do people make statements like that? " Huge piece of ..."etc blah..?
I used several ff18 builds with zero issues .. my woman's been on it for 2 months with zero issues as well.
So it was bad how exactly?
Not trying to be an ass . I've just never understood these blanket statements about an entire build being bad vs the possibility of one flash being bad...
Edit: for clarity, I'm not saying i dislike fh or fi builds either... I'm just saying I havent had a major issue with any build since fc27(I think)
I'm using stock rooted FI25 with the Agat 5.4 kernel and the Pegasusq governor. Works great for me! There are a lot of great custom ROMs out with CM9 being one of my favs but the bugs make me stick with stock.

So Ive been doing some comparing of A LOT of Roms. Trying to see which one would be the greatest for battery life. Im going to be working long lloonng hours here shortly and need the battery life. Ive been looking All the way back to EL26 GB. So far Calkulin's E4GT v3.0 [ EL29 has my eye. Right now Im on ParanoidAndroid 4.1.2. Im just looking for others opinions. Maybe there is a Rom I missed? Tell me what you think.
if you want just battery life and a little performance, just go with calkulins 3.0 it has by far the best battery
