Hey all,
I got a brand new Galaxy Nexus today, but after browsing the very white Play Store, I noticed a pixel that shows like the rainbow, a whole bunch of colors.
EDIT: I think it's a "hot spot"?
I'm thinking stuck pixel, but can anyone tell me more about it, I know there are existing threads, but I would appreciate refreshed opinions and information.
Just as well, is there anything I can do about it, other than send it in to Samsung and wait close to a month/ go to Verizon and get a CPO-POS replacement?
EDIT: As in, anyone have personal experience with RMA for their Galaxy Nexus?
that means you have dead pixel on your screen. if your within your 14 days I would recommend returning and swapping it with another brand new nexus. else get a certified handset from Verizon.

Dead, not stuck? Bleh, just my luck, happened to the last new electronic with a screen I bought too...is it normal?
I bought it NIB on eBay, I hear Google ships ya a replacement for free, but then isn't Samsung the one to go to? Wouldn't they want me to send it in and "repair" it for a week?

No it is stuck if lit. A dead pixel would be black and never able to emit light. There is some apps that will flash diff colors that may unstick it and sometimes even massaging it with a little pressure will get the out. Best bet is to get a replacment though...at least try a stuck pixel app first, free, fast and may work...

"massaging" it won't work as it has a glass digitizer over it. People only put pressure on it if it's a monitor or TV.
Thanks for the replies, guys. I had this with an HP laptop recently, but I wasn't sure it was a stuck pixel since it looks so weird-looks like someone stabbed that one particular spot with a pencil, only the spot looks like exactly one pixel, it has that same rainbow-y effect as water on the screen.
We're sure it's a stuck pixel?
And again, based on reading about other GalNexes, Samsung support likes to "repair" your phone while Google will ship out a new one ASAP.... Google Support sounds better to me, any reinforcement to that? Thanks again all!

I kind of want to bump this....
Can anyone confirm that it is a hot/stuck pixel, and not like impact damage?
It doesn't seem worth it to send it back and look for another one on eBay, but if it's damage....

I had a stuck pixel on my last Nexus that was just blue. Verizon swapped it out for another one. Your problem sounds a little different. If you have insurance I would see about getting a clnr from Verizon. I'm not sure if they will cover a phone purchased elsewhere but it's worth a shot at least to find out.

I'm exchanging it for another "new" one from the eBay seller, they've agreed to it but I;m not sure where this replacement Nexus is coming from.... Anyway, the more I look at it, the less it looks like a stuck pixel and the more it looks like impact damage, it's not like it's red, blue or green, it's like that rainbowy color you get when the screen is like...damaged, or there's lint on it, but it's not lint.

Check warranty before anything
Before anything I would high recommend going on to Samsung's website and see if you are still under warranty.
My phone was "broken" too and before I did anything I was lucky enough to still be under warranty.
Please check before making any purchases

I actually work for Samsung and set up warranty repairs for phones the phone is OOW by condition. there will be a charge to fix, which is right about $160 to repair. but it creates a 90 day warranty on the device.
you can call

Who's your carrier and did you buy insurance ? For 7 bucks a month T-mo will replace no matter what or how something happens to your phone, including loss, (or kids). Last I checked $130.00 deductible, but for a 500.00 phone I'd say worth it. Just be sure they don't try to palm off a refurbished phone to you.

LOL, my kids are the same way with my phones and tablet, but I let them play on carpet and in the car ONLY! If there's a chance, they already know the answer.
I'm in the same boat with a cracked screen, does anyone know if there is a resin of some kind. Also I just had this phone swaped out by tmobile and I might be able to play a warranty card. This would be a really good bussiness if someone could come up with a crack screen resin . I have serched and only found one you tube video, but they are not selling a product.
My carrier is Telus..But when I purchased the phone I didn't need insurance cause it was for me.

I just recently cracked my screen on my phone and I had it replaced. I had hd2 before that and I dropped on the ground and I had it replaced. T-mobile works with Asurion. I'm sure Asurion will ask you for the deductable which is about 130 dollars so go ahead and give them a call. They send you another phone by next business day. Make sure you explicitly request a new phone. 866-268-7221. This is Asurions number for tmobile clients.

Do you remember where you got the part? I am having a hell of a time finding one. I am looking for the lcd and a screen replacement for a decent price. The only one I found was $130 on ebay.
They go for about $65 used, grade B-C. New ones are $100+-, MAKE SURE U ORDER THE RIGHT ONE! These phones can be completely taken apart and reassembled in less than a half hour. Any questions, hit me up.

Yeah, u can buy NEW, but as soon as u turn it on....ITS NOT NEW ANYMORE! A "fully working" used one is just as good, believe me, I fix about 6-8 phones a week for fun and also so my friends dont take their phones in to get fixed just to get taken for hundreds and hundreds of dollars when IT DOESN'T REALLY COST THAT MUCH TO FIX PHONES.

Used display
Some S2 used displays have a dead pixels or gray lines. Which is getting worse with the time. Mine looks like "zebra" especially in the cold weather. So better to invest in a new one. Ebay has it for about $100 now.
Just FYI.
A new screen is roughly $90-100 on Flebay. I won't be fixing the t989 I found in my Pile 'O Junk, as it still works fine. Could probably buy a whole new one for that price.
However, the LG E970 with the broken glass and digitizer is going to get a new display... for only $75.
I got 2 t989's with serial numbers about 200 apart, both had cracked screens, I bought a new screen for (at the time) $145, then id swap motherboards once in a while for kicks, then my buddy wanted to buy one so I put one together all complete, damn near brand new condition, and noticed when people called they couldnt hear us (him), like as if the mute was on. Also, I shot some video with the camera and was saying TEST TEST 123 and played it back and couldn't hear anything. Any suggestions?

I'm on my 3rd GNex. The first 2 had a stuck pixel. I just got a brand new replacement and it has a dead pixel! The dead pixel shows up on 5 different colours. I am so frustrated. I called Samsung and they told me to return it because the dead pixel can make the screen worse. She told me to wait until the second batch comes out but couldn't give me a date as to when they will be out. I have read many threads on here regarding dead pixels and grainy screens. What happened to the quality of Samsung screens? They are known for their screens. I am very disappointed in the GNex. I don't know whether I should exchange it for yet another GN or just get a full refund and wait. What do you guys think?
I had a whole vertical line of red dead pixels on the far right side of my screen. It was actually the ideal place to have such a line, since it was out of the way of pretty much everything.
But still, when I pay $450 for something new I'm not going to put up with such a flaw, so I got a replacement which is pretty perfect. Third time was the charm for me. If I had needed a 4th phone I would've called it quits and gotten a refund.
Looks like I'm calling it quits since this will be my 4th GNex. Even Samsung told me to return it and wait for the second batch to come out. They have no clue when the second batch will be out. But all this going back and forth is too much in just 2 weeks!
Edit, if my posts showed up 3X, I'm sorry. I have no idea why it did.
Afaik dead pixels are black... if it is a colour then the pixel is stuck... just Google how to fix stuck pixels.
I just received my Google Play Nexus and as soon as I booted it up to the first screen I could tell the display was trash. It was stupidly purple and grainy. I know this isn't normal because I've owned 2 GSM Nexi previously. Even without owning them, it's pretty easy to see something is wrong with the display. How does this get released to the public?
I really don't feel like going through multiple replacements until I get a good screen. What are my options as far as guaranteeing a good screen? Thanks.

send it back and get a new one or flash a kernel and change the colors.
Pretty much nothing, going to have to stick with it or do a bunch of the advanced replacements or return it. I'm about to be on my fourth galaxy nexus. Even when I requested the most recent one they were bullshitting me telling me I was out of warranty when it had only been 1 week from the last replacement. I have wasted about 3hrs the past 2 days on the phone and got nothing but big fat NOs for any more returns and they told me id have to send in a repair and this was from a level 3 advanced return employee. This asshole level 3 god of samsung decided to make notes on my file saying I was out of warranty and not to advance replace my phone. He apparently was for sure that warranty was only for 14 days from date of purchase and would not listen to me. Thankfully I called a couple times more until I got connected with someone who sounded like they had the slightest amount of intelligence without redirecting me (i had to call very many times because mostmof the regular employees were seeing the notes the douche left on my account about not allowing me to advanced replace and telling me no)and ended talking to a standard employee who normally takes care of repairs/returns and she was like wtf u are still under warranty I'll fix everything in the records and send you a new one.
IMO if I were you I'd do anything to get rid of that phone without going thru Samsung. They'll bull**** you and run u around in circles and youll waste plenty of life on the phone with their garbage customer service. END RANT

I've owned two GSM Gnex's and never had a issue with the screen. I hope the one I get Thursday is ok.
I went through a single replacement with Google then returned the replacement because it was worse than the original. If purple bothers you, a custom kernel - like Trinity - will definitely fix it. However nothing can be done about grain and banding. My suggestion is return the phone and don't bother exchanging it if the latter two bother you.
I have seen a good gnex side by side with mine and I want to cry - the other has no grain or banding at all - however i just don't have the energy to fight Samsung on this and play endless exchange game, and wish I'd just returned the phone to Google and gotten something else. For the record I have two dark bands - one vertical and one horizontal - crossing in the middle of the screen, in addition to a heavy dose of grain. Trinity wiped out all purple though.

My screen only goes purple when set to the lowest brightness. Is that the normal "purple" behavior people are talking about? Otherwise there is a noticeable snap back into the greys around 5-10% brightness.

Even if I could fix the colors (Which I doubt, they are so far off) there is an extreme amount of graininess to the screen. It's visible even on max brightness.

Mine is purple even on max brightness. I've never seen a screen this bad in my entire life.
Usually not, but damn. Last week my original GNex had it's radio's take a dump. After 11 solid months, I rebooted one night and had data, but voice never came back. So I put everything back stock and walked into Verizon and paid $15 to have a replacement overnighted to me.
Now, a week later, I've come to the conclusion that my replacement is fubared. I've never seen a device experience sleep of death + turning into an oven so quickly and consistently before. It's good for 30, maybe 60 minutes tops before it craps out. This is awesome when your phone is your alarm clock.
So here I go again, getting ready to waltz back into the Verizon store and do the same song and dance again. Pay $15, get a phone on Tuesday, probably have something massively wrong, rinse and repeat. Hey, devices take a crap from time to time, and luckily mine did while still under warranty, but I'm taking picks on how many replacement units I have to go through before one finally sticks.
My guess is the 3rd replacement is a charm. Who wants the over?
Those of you who have gone through the replacement fiasco with Samsung, how many tries did it take you to get a good one?

Shipping to have it overnighted. It's also awesome that my local store doesn't toss out loaner phones while you wait (It'd make it easy to avoid that whole shipping thing). Maybe I'll call Verizon Tech Support just to bug them about.

I love Samsung personally
OOOh, free overnight shipping. Thanks Big Red!
Hopefully the next one is a charm because honestly, I don't know what I'd do without a Nexus device on Verizon's network. The alternatives make me cringe.
why is there no option for none
Read the last line of the OP.
I'm just curious to know if getting bum replacements is a "normal" thing because for a phone that went through a "100 point inspection", well, they dropped the ball on this one.

Getting my third in the mail tomorrow Last one had ridiculous sensitivity issues, we'll see what the next one brings.
And why don't you just call em up instead of going in to the store? I keep my phone and they send me a refurb in the mail. The first phone was USPS, but after that one was crap they began overnighting it via FedEx.

I went through 4 before I got my refurb, then I promptly sold it for a GSM model. That's one thing that I have to hand it to Verizon for, they were really good once I got the 1st defective one. I had 4 at one time, most overnighted at no cost and no fees or holds.
They did try everything they could to not send me one though... Unlike Google who were more then happy to send me multiple N7's.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk HD
I had to replace one because of dirt under the screen even though its new and heat issues, the replacement was perfect and never get hot under normal use. I also bought one recently and it has heat issue and poor screen as well, but I'll live with it for the price. Its sort of a luck thing with this device, especially a lottery with AMOLED screen. I was going to get the N4 but it seem to also have lots of little issues on its own, such as getting too hot, I really hate phones getting overheat.I'm still waiting on confirmation on the USB OTG too.
After reading this it makes me think I need to bug Asurion tomorrow, I had to get an insurance replacement so I have to go through them for warranty now, they are definitely more strict on some things but like 3 minutes of complaining about signal got me a new one once already. The current one gets EXTREMELY hot under even normal use, so hot that it is uncomfortable to hold and definitely would be uncomfortable up against your face.

The first time I went in, I was hoping that they'd have one in the back they could swap out for me, or a loaner phone (fat chance, I know). My job pretty much requires a working cell phone. I'm kind of surprised that Verizon was so willing to send a replacement out in just a few minutes. Granted, I don't know what alternative they'd have. There's no real way to troubleshoot SOD issues. My main concern is just not having to go through a massive fiasco running through multiple devices, especially with an 8 day vacation coming up.

Let's see... My first nexus has a seriously bad screen. I shipped it out the same day I got it. Got my replacement (#2) and the screen was worse than the first one. So I sent that bad and got another one (#3). This one had the same issue as OP. Radios wouldn't work....no voice or data and the phone got really hot. Enough to where I couldn't hold it to my face. So I sent that one in and they sent me a Samsung Stratosphere (#4 replacement). Sent that in and got the nexus I currently have making 5 replacements (4 with nexuses). I also went through Verizon...
Good luck
I had to replace one about ~8 months ago for screen ghosting. I was really satisfied with the replacement until now because the ghosting is back on the replacement. I'm contemplating switching to T-Mobile though, so I dunno if I'm going to attempt to replace this one.

I've tried to search around a bit for some help but I'm not really sure what to search for. I found one other thread that was maybe similar to my issue but I'm not sure.
I ordered the note 8 from Staples and it arrived last Tuesday 9/10. I was a really hot day and the packing box was roasting hot. The product packaging was hot and the device was hot. I let it cool but when I finally powered it up the screen was buggy (see pic band of "static/snow" it was worse than that). I did a little search to see if I should return it right then or if it was just a temporary thing. What I could find seemed to suggest it might be the heat, factory reset and see if it was better. I did that and it was better for a day or two. Then it just would flicker a bit late in the day on days when I used it a bit more. Today it's been acting up since I first turned it on.
It doesn't get really hot just maybe a little warm in the 80 degree range maybe where I can just barely feel it.
So, I am bummed out wondering if I need to take it back to Staples or contact Samsung now that I've got it all set up ect. Or exactly what's going on with it? I haven't tried a reset again but not sure at this point it's going to do anything...?
So just looking for some thoughts on what I should do next or if it's able to be saved or not?
(pictures: it's not always that bad sometimes it's just tiny speckles on pictures or text sort of like at the bottom of the bar in the second picture)
Well now the charger doesn't seem to want to work so...

Was in the process of returning it right when you posted that I bet. It was beyond buggy this morning so there was no denying it needed to go back. I think I was in denial because I've been so lucky until now that I've never had to return something that was brand new like this.
First they wanted me to go through the warranty but finally decided I could just exchange it (sadly none in stock) so shipping a new one should get here Fri, knock on wood!

I had the exact same issue with my first note 8 received, on the lower third of the screen, and it was getting worse as it was used.
Return is the best option, this is hardware related (maybe a simple connector, but it's better to have a good unit isn't it ?)

It seems that the failure rate of the Note 8 is pretty high. I saw refurbished Note 8 sold everywhere: eBay, bestbuy, Walmart etc...
