i cant seem to find a definite answer on here. maybe im searching the wrong terms or something.

also, i know im probably gonna have to wipe it and full flash a rom, recommendations for backing up??

Follow efrant's guide.

As for backing up, you may want to root first and backup using TitaniumBackup, look for it in the Play Store,

Basic's of Rooting

I was just wondering if anyone could just post the basic's of rooting, not how to do it, but everything I need to know and keep in mind, what everything means, if say something goes wrong, or need to re-flash a rom, just the basic's, I can follow directions just fine, so I don't think ill have any problems rooting.
I did the unrevoked method, just to get superuser and install a few apps, waiting to do the toast method once a good ROM comes out, and now that Fresh is out, I think it is time.
It is really pretty easy. I think setting up adb is the hardest part and it's not too bad either if you follow a guide here.
If searching xda isn't enough try youtube.
This is a bad idea.
Rooting isn't that hard, the instructions are clear. If it became any easier then everyone would do it and we would have people coming out of the woodwork asking for help for this that and the other.

Who cares if "everyone comes out of the woodwork"???? People take this far too seriously...it's a freakn' phone. If there are a ton of noob questions on here, so be it. The world will not end. If you don't like the questions, there is a button on your mouse that will help you skip past it. I thought that's what forums were designed for in the first place??

it's honestly REALLY EASY, you flash a zip, reboot, flash another zip then flash a rom and your done.
Installing the ROM on my phone wasn't what I was concerned about.... but whatever, flashing now.
How do you install unrevoked? I would like to try this method if is possible since I had my evo rooted then I unrooted and install the OTA and now I can't root it anymore.
http://unrevoked.com/m/
Go there, and then click the image, it will install itself. Make sure in the options you make it so it can download unautorized files.

[Q] Rooting, first time, questions

May have been asked before, but nothing especially new or in DZ forum that I could find, sorry if I'm being stupid and missing something, if I am just link it to me and I'll close this.
So yea, I'm finally considering rooting my phone and flashing maybe the new virtuous unity mod with sense 3.0 cause it looks stupidly nice.
My MAIN question is, can everything be undone? If I make a mistake, can I go back? If I decide I don't like it can I go back? What are risks and how big are the risks? Would you say they are worth it, and if so why? Especially if you are a user of the virtuous mod tell me about it please and thank you.
Also if you could give a link to the best guide to use especially ones that are easy to reverse that would be fantastic.
Sorry if this thread has already been done, if it has as I said link it and I'll delete this.
Thanks in advanced for any and all information you can provide!
Everything is reversible. All the partitions that get modified get backup up to your sdcard during the rooting process.
The recommended guide is from the wiki http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=HTC_Vision#Rooting_the_Vision_.28G2.2FDZ.29_and_DHD
It's the most up to date guide.
There are hardly any risks in the rooting process, as long as you read all the instructions first and make sure you understand them and execute them correctly.
and remember, if you ever need help, just pop over to the #G2ROOT irc channel on freenode.

I have rooted my phone using that wiki guide and have virtuous unity on my phone. If you follow the steps exactly, then you should be able to root you phone no problem. There is a chance that you may brick your phone and screw it up though but this is very unlikely. Remember, with great risk comes great reward

So like I could be able to restore my phone to exactly how it was immediately before the process? Like with all my contacts, apps, msgs, homescreens, etc? Also what exactly does getting "bricked" mean and what will it do?

you can restore everything if you are able to achive root with a backup application. brick is when basically the system data gets screwed up when your trying to flash something or changing things up and you cant boot your phone up. its basically stuck in the loading screen. sometimes you can recover from this but sometimes you cant

backing up before root s off

Firstly I've searched the FAQ's and browsed the associated threads n cant find a satisfactory answer, so I'm not just being lazy n opening a new thread, so now thats outta the way......
I'm trying to find a way of backing up my original rom/software to allow me to return to it after rooting and flashing a new rom if its not suitable.
I've found a few apps etc but most need rooted to use, I plan on titanium back up pro once rooted, but its the initial one before rooting i need help with.
Please dont say google, i have that, cocntacts etc all ok, I'm trying to save the rom/software to allow me to return to it if desired.
I'm S-off.
Anyone help please?

install a recovery, and make nandroid backup ?
OR run a root script, that can be found on index thread, then install app like titanium backup and make backup, BUT it will only backup your apps and its data, not the whole rom.... maybe a first option is better ...
Definitely just do the recovery and then nandroid backup. Then root

I agree with b02 on this...
The best thing to do is install ClockworkMod recovery and make nandroid backup.

How can i turn my Nexus 100% Stock?

I bought a used nexus its in great condition everything works but the buyer didnt tell me it was rooted already. Thats fine cause i was going to but i wanted to learn the ropes myself. So is there anyone to get back to 100% stock? He flashed a CWM too. I just want to do it myself. And is there anyway to wipe format the internal memory aswell? Thanks!
you can use this guide : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1626895
even if you don't want to convert and already have yakju or takju, this is the way you can go back to pure stock

Yup this guide is the way to go. Flash the "takju" images. There's full 4.1.1 images now too.
Thanks guys i have a usa gsm model and I guess i looked around and found out a way to wipe the internal data with those tools so i think im good and im kinda getting the hang of using the tool kit. But the phone has 4.1 i wanted to install rooted 4.1.1 is that possible? or how would i go about doing that? Thanks alot for your quick and helpful responses!

Don't use a toolkit. Follow that guide posted. That guide will wipe the device completely and put you on 100% stock 4.1.1. If you want root, you can follow the last part of the guide, which has a step-by-step routine to root also.

Why shouldnt i use the tools? they seem pretty straight foward is there something bad about them? But Im finally going to get a chance to follow that guide hopefully and go to 4.1.1 and then root it cause i just want root right now for back up purposes. But thans for the info!

The tools aren't inherently bad, but they're kind of a "black box" to new users, where they put their phone in and it comes out rooted/flashed. The issue occurs when something goes wrong, and the user doesn't know why because they don't understand the procedure, and they can't reverse engineer what happened to fix it. So what they end up doing is coming and posting threads, etc.
If they were doing it the "real" (manual) way, via Fastboot, they'd know what was going on and have a better understanding of what they're doing to their phone. Because we have a Nexus, there's really no reason not to just use Fastboot because it's the tool that Google gives us. You own a ~$650 (much cheaper now w/ the Play Store, but still) device, why not spend 15 minutes learning how to work with it properly?

I can understand that and i usually do want to learn the ropes but i was kind of thrust into the middle cause i bought a used nexus and it was rooted and had CWM 6 flashed to it so I am just trying to figure things out a bit or at least go back to Full stock and no recovory flashed so i can learn the ropes myself and flash recoverys myself if needed and i want to get 4.1.1 and root it myself. If possible can i use the tools to just go to stock and then learn the manual ways from there? I got adb and the fastboot.exe finally so i never had that or new i needed it and when i first used the toolkit to wipe my sd I think it installed some drivers that the tool kit told me to which im hoping are correct. I really hate to ask questions unless its needed and i apprecieate it.

The guide that was linked earlier is extremely simple to follow. It breaks everything down step by step, and you will be fully stock.

How to actually update DesireHD to 4.0

Sorry Folks, I'm new to this site/forum, I would like to upgrade my HTC Desire HD to the 4.0 update, which I read/watched is working well. My problem is I'm fairly handy with my phone and somewhat with computers. But I don't see/understand how to actually go about that. I thought I saw somewhere, that I am to factory reset my phone, I can handle that, but I guess what I don't understand, is how I actually get the update ONTO the phone. Do I just go this website and clink on a link from my phone and it will take over? If so, which one, I see links all over the place. Should I remove my memory card? I'm assuming this site is for really phone, computer savy people. I just want to try the update. Would be happy to donate to the site, once I get it going. Can someone please help me. Thanks for everyone's time of reading this. Sorry for my ignorance.
Cheers.

Before screwing your phone read this guide carefully Post #7 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1824379)
There are also lots of interesting stuff in there so read, read and read.
Hi, its a little more complicated than you suggest in your post.
First you will need to disable the security on your device (known as s-off) and flash a custom recovery.
You need to download the rom you wish to install and save it to your sd card. See here for a list of custom roms, there is a section for Android 4.0:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1610483
Boot the phone into recovery, wipe you phone data and factory reset then install the rom.
You can use this to unlock the phone and flash clockworkmod recovery:
http://tau.shadowchild.nl/attn1/?p=74
Do loads of searching this forum and googling so you fully understand the process as there is a chance of bricking your phone if it goes wrong. If you do your homework, are methodical and computer savy as you mentioned you should be fine.
Good luck!
Thanks, But...think I'm screwed.
Thanks Guys for your help, but I think this is way beyond me. Its not that I'm lazy, but I can't see myself reading tons of posts and researching for days to do this. I'm having a hard time even finding relevant info that pertains to what I'm trying to do, links and stuff everywhere. Doesn't seem like a lot to ask for to have a step by step guide. You know what I mean ie: Step 1, Factory Reset, Step 2, download this file Step 3. Run it etc... Oh well, I will just suffer with this phone, and probably get stung getting out of my contract early and get a Samsung G3 or something. I had thought this was as easy as factory resetting my phone, downloading a thing or two and then just running it. Too bad there wasn't a store or place I could take this to, to get it done properly by people in the know. Would gladly pay to have this done.
Thanks.
Everything you need is in the link and guide glevitan gave you. But you do need to read. If you don't want to, the rooting and flashing isn't for you.
